Powers/Abilities: Chemistry: Jonathan Crane is a proficient chemist and has used this skill to develop his infamous "fear toxin".
Intimidation: Using a variety of toxins that cause his victims to hallucinate that their phobias have come to life, the SCARECROW instills fear in all who see him.
Violent Dancing: When forced to fight, Crane uses his own martial arts style he calls "violent dancing", which is based in part on the crane style of kung fu, and makes full use of his long arms and legs.
Psychology: Jonathan Crane is an expert in the field of psychology, specifically the study of anxiety disorders. He is a walking textbook on the study of fear, and can recite the name and description of nearly every known phobia. He often demonstrates his intellectual prowess by analyzing his fellow patients at Arkham Asylum.
Weapons: Fear Toxin
Weakness: Near Sighted: The glasses aren't to make him look like an intellectual, he has had the need of wearing glasses since his earliest years in school. This made the children call him four eyes, and worse.
Ornithophobia: The fear of birds, he has always held a fear of birds, since his earliest years when his grandmother locked him in with birds as a punishment. This isn't quiet crippling but birds make his heart pound faster and his palms to sweat.
Bio: Psychiatrist, Pscyhopharmacist, Biologist; Head of Arkham Asylum for the Criminally Insane
Growing up, Jonathan never knew exactly what was going on with his parents, his mother and father did not raise him. His grandmother was left custody of him, and what a grandmother that was. She rarely had a good word for the boy. When he was bad or didn't do things as she saw fit, he was locked in her aviary with the birds, which would terrify him. His grandmother was apathetic towards his plight at school, where he was often roughed up for being different, he was to tall to thin for his age, and the children teased him often calling him a scarecrow.
His genius didn't help, with his love of books and learning this only added to the image already there. Highschool life went little better for him, and he caused the death of the captain of the football team and the head cheerleader in his freshman year.
From here he decided to not be afraid anymore, that he'd been terrorized most of his life, starting with his grandmother, who died from being attacked by a large flock of birds.
It was at this point that it occurred to him that if he discovered the root of fear, perhaps he could stop it in himself. This sparked a lifelong obsession for the chemical compound necessary to induce fear in others-and therefor have the same powers his attackers had over him. He ceased caring about anything but his ambitions, and his fervent studies and snappish personality developed to defend himself from his abusers only pushed people further from him. He gained a Doctorate in Psychology and studied Psychopharmocology (the study of the effect of drugs on the brain) in his spare time. He was eventually appointed to head of Arkham, which allowed him to begin testing his 'fear toxin', which he was close to perfecting, on both unwitting patients and interfering doctors. The toxin usually drove them insane, and he would then use the so-called animalistic 'Gimps' as his own personal broken-minded watchdogs and bodyguards.
Scarecrow is in a sense everything that Crane was ever teased for, since the personality believes he actually is a scarecrow, made of straw. He wants to punish people for what happened to Crane and often encourages Crane to do things that he might usually shy away from. He is the more violent and aggressive side of him, sometimes taking over fully in order to 'punish' random people he finds if Crane hasn't been 'vigilant' enough.
