On the Hunt (BeauteousDeath/Me)

She couldn't help the grin at his complaint, placing a palm to the side of his head, but then his suggestion started to make her laugh, and even though it caused her pain, causing her to hold both of her hands to side, and gasping between chuckles, she had to force herself to quit and try to take deep breaths, "Ulrick.. don't make me laugh right now.. please?" she said, a little more calm, though it looked as though she might bust out laughing again. Then she shook her head, "I'm not sure sure if that's a good idea, I wasn't with them for very long, I didn't exactly make any outstanding attachments," she continued on, sobering up a little more. She wasn't sure why she had found that funny in the first place. There was her habit, peaking out again, in laughing at inappropriate times.

"Besides, I'm afraid they would try to harm you guys, and you and the guys here would have to retaliate, and we both know that humans don't stand a chance against any of you," she added. Pulling in short, shallow, but slow breaths as she closed her amber eyes in pain. Then she felt someone getting her attention, opening them she grabbed the vicodin and the makeshift cup of water and downed the horsepill. All she could do now, was wait for the medication to kick in.

Ulrick's head hung low as she explained the foolishness of his suggestion. Even he couldn't believe he had suggested it. Of course the humans would fight them, especially if they had a human captive. A human from their group, no less. If they were going to be able to integrate them, they would have to do it in a more subtle way. He watched her as she drank down the pain killers and sighed. Sure, this dulled the pain, but it didn't help her heal. There wasn't anything he could do. He had no idea how to heal broken bones besides resting for a day. Regeneration for a demon was a great deal faster than for a human. He nodded slightly at her words.

"I suppose you're right," he replied before looking to the opening of the cave. "It's about time for my wolves to go hunting. Do you want meat or fruit today for the first meal?"
---
As he engaged in pleasantries, the birds outside stopped chirping, alert to another threat in the area. Beetle demons had tracked the scent of their fallen comrades and followed the smell of the prey they had been tracking. There were at least five of them, skittering through the forest, their mandibles dripping with saliva. Not only did they intend to feast upon the human, but they desired revenge against the wolves. They were certain they would have a feast. They would crush and eat whatever crossed their paths. They lied in wait, staying downwind, knowing the wolves were about to start their hunt, only to be met with an ambush. Their presence was not known yet, and the wolves remained unaware.

Crystal settled down, ready to pass out once the med kicked in, "Uhm.. would both be too much trouble?" she asked him with a hopeful look. She then rolled to her side, facing him, and pulled the blanket up around her, covering, giving her a sense of modesty, "One of these days I think we'll need to go to one of the abdandoned towns and get me more clothing," she commented, "Especially since someone decided to just rip mine off of me, then keep me alive and only for himself," she said to him, a smile on her lips. Then she looked up at him, "Were you planning on going with them? or leaving any here to guard?" alarm and concern was evident on her face, quickly replacing the playfullness from earlier.

Ulrick smiled slightly as she asked for both.

"Yes, you're a complete burden," he teased, his tone dripping with sarcasm. When she shifted the blanket to cover her body, Ulrick let a whine slip from his throat. He liked looking at her completely bare body. Now she wanted to cover it up. Not just with the blanket, but with those pesky clothes that humans were always so desperate to wear. He laughed when she teased him about tearing off her clothing. "Well...the clothes...y'know, I couldn't help it. But if you must, we can pick you up some clothes...but there's a catch. You have to get those damned ribs healing faster so you can pick them out."

He paused as she mentioned the hunting. He was starting to miss it, but he didn't want to leave her behind. He was still kind of wishy-washy about his pack right now. He didn't want any more Sly-incidents.

"I think I'm going to stay for now. Once you feel better, I may go out more. Might even take you with me, if you're up for it. You won't have to fight, exactly, but you can wa--"

A horrible scream sounded from outside, accompanied by the sounds of combat and carnage. Ulrick could smell blood and he immediately jumped up.

"On second thought, stay here and cover up. We're being attacked," he growled before running out of the cave, his pack swarming over the beetles that had nearly managed to force their way into the den.

More horrifying sounds of battle rang through the den, echoing from the stone walls. One beetle managed to push its way into the den and immediately thundered in Crystal's direction. Its mandible stretched out, drooling as it neared her and prepared to take the first bite. That is, until Ulrick returned in time to pierce his massive claws into the side of the beetle's head, knocking it out of commission. Soon, the sounds of battle faded and victorious howls sounded in the now calm air. Ulrick panted, more from fear than physical exhaustion. He really thought he was about to lose Crystal to this beast. As his pack began to drag the corpse from the den, he sat down next to her.

"Are you alright? I'm sorry we let that one slip by..."

At the sounds, Crystal sat up, holding the blanket up to her, wincing from the movement. Then Ulrick was gone. All she could do was sit there, covering herself with a blasted blanket, and listen to the sounds of screaming, shouting, ripping and tearing.

Then whatever had been chasing her that night showed itself, managing to break through the pack, and raced for her. Crystal scooted herself back, trying to get to her feet, crying out against the burning pain in her rips. She thought for sure she was going to be dead, seeing the dripping mandible open, coming ever closer to her quickly, she screamed.

Then it was gone, head off and all she could do was sag in relief, wincing at the pain again, panting from her own fear.

When Ulrick sat down beside her, she turned into him, taking in deep breaths, one hand clutching to his fur, the other to her injured side and she nodded quickly in answer to his question of her well being.

"Are you? The rest of the pack?" she asked him softly.

No demon had ever managed to break his pack's defenses before. They were getting soft. The demons in this area would need to be dealt with, otherwise blunders like this attack would happen again. For now, however, his mate needed attending to. She grasped at his fur while clutching her side. His ears flattened upon seeing her in pain again. He wrapped his arms around her and gently laid her back down on the pelts. He eyed the broken ribs, wishing he could do something more to help her accelerate her healing process. He would need something...something to keep her torso from moving around too much.

"Try not to move," he muttered, temporarily ignoring her questions. "It'll just aggravate your ribs. As for me and my pack, we'll be okay. A few injuries, but we'll live. The beetles are dead, but there are still more out there, along with countless other demons." He knew this would make her uneasy, but he needed to be sure and remind her of the dangers. "We are all going to be on high alert, so I can't send too many out for food and such, but I will do what I can for what you need. For now, I don't know if I can leave you behind just yet. My wolves seem to be treating you appropriately, but I want to be sure they don't do anything stupid."

Ulrick didn't turn his back to her. He didn't want her to see the large bite mark one of the beetles managed to plant on him. It stung like hell, but he kept his composure. He leaned down and was about to give her lips a lick as his way of kissing her, when he paused. Instead, he tried to kiss Crystal the way she was more likely to be used to, by pressing his lips against hers. He definitely wasn't used to it, but he knew he'd have to make some adjustments. He then pulled away and turned to his wolf comrades. A few had shallow gashes in their sides and limbs but the others simply appeared slightly tousled. The meals for the day would be significantly less...

"Alright wolves. We have some injured, so they will have to stay behind. I want seven of you out hunting for meat, fruit, and water. Ursu, you alone will be going into the wasteland cities. I need you to find something that will hold Crystal's ribs in place. Also, if you can manage, find some of those...clothing things for her," And with that, his wolves dispersed, the injured few remaining behind along with several other guard wolves standing at the mouth of the den. Ulrick turned to Crystal, again eyeing her ribs. "Don't worry about them. By the time we go to sleep tonight, they'll be healed. Starting tomorrow, we're going to start clearing out the surrounding demons. They shouldn't be a problem after that."

---

A few hours later, the wolves finally returned, carrying a moderate amount of food for all of them and, in addition, a wide array of fruits and vegetables for Crystal to choose from: apples, berries, grapes, carrots, tomatoes, you name it. Ursu was the last to arrive, hauling a massive bag that was stuffed with clothing and carrying a large role of bandages and a large splint. This wolf was among the smartest int he pack, being able to read the human language.

"Here you go, Ulrick, Crystal," he grunted as he dragged his loot to their bedding. "I wasn't sure what you liked, so I pretty much took everything in the store. And I saw that these--" he held up the bandages and splint "--are supposed to help hold your ribs in place."

Ulrick dragged the bag onto their bed and opened it as Ursu began work on applying the splint and bandages to Crystal, being careful to not touch her breasts for fear of incurring Ulrick's wrath. Meanwhile, the alpha male pawed through the clothing choices. There were a lot of casual-looking outfits--jeans, t-shirts, sandals, etc.--and a few dresses. He had a hard time understanding the need for clothing. He turned to Crystal and held the bag open for her to look in. "I'm not good with this sort of thing, so...you'll probably need to do the picking."
