Be Careful What You Wish For (MadilynShay & Lord Credo)

Raven was deep in the woods, tracking their would be killers. They'd gained a lot more ground than he'd expected and since she'd broken his computer, he couldn't check his cameras. These men were well trained. They'd come in a group of four which meant they'd done their homework. Three expected to die. Luckily for him, they hadn't found his cabin. Jayde was safe for the moment.

Raven screwed the silencer into place on his rifle and readjusted himself in the tree. Looking down the scope, he scouted the house out for the fifth time that night and felt his gut fall into his stomach. She was standing on the porch, looking for him most likely. Dammit. He'd hoped to have this done before she woke up. He quickly scanned the surrounding area and saw that he wasn't the only one to notice her. Neither was he the only one with a rifle. Taking but s second to aim, he fired two rounds in quick succession. One caught the sniper and the second caught his spotter.

Jumping from the tree, he began running back toward the cabin in a roundabout fashion, being careful to weave back and forth between the tree trunks to throw off an enemy shot. He was getting close to the house. Raven dropped to the ground and set up his rifle again. Taking a few precious seconds to listen, he got it trained on one other assailant and pulled the trigger. Where was that last fucker? Looking up, he saw the man running toward Jayde, a vicious looking knife in his hand.

"Dammit!" He got up and ran toward the house as quickly as he could. "JAYDE!! RUN!!" He wasn't s very religious man but he prayed harder than he ever had that he got there in time.

She shivered slightly as she stood out on the porch, the cool breeze sending shivers down her body. She scanned the area around her, but all she saw was the forest surrounding the cabin. After a moment, she heard a sound, almost like footsteps off in the distance. It was a stupid move, and she should've known not to go towards them, but she did, hoping it would be Raven. As she got closer, she heard the sound again. "Raven?" she called out once more, feeling a little uneasy as he didn't respond. If she could hear his footsteps, he had to have heard her voice.

It wasn't until she heard Raven screaming at her that she realized whoever she was moving towards her wasn't him. She stood, frozen with fear as the source of the footsteps made himself present, his large figure moving uncomfortably close to her. Snapping back to reality, she turned and ran, trying to make her way back to the cabin.

She ran as fast as she could, trying to see her way around in the dark. As she tried to escape him, she kept turning back, trying to see how far the man was from her. Each time she looked back, he seemed to be closer. Finally, the cabin was insight. Running even harder, she turned back again, tripping over a tree root as she did. She cried out in pain as she fell to the ground, her heart sinking as she realized there was no way possible she would be able to get away now.

Raven urged speed to come from somewhere deep inside him. He was no longer a trained killer, his actions were fueled by adrenalin. He was afraid she'd die on his watch just hours after he'd promised her safety. He couldn't allow that. He saw the tree root. He saw her fall and knew that if he didn't get there soon, she'd die. He was so close, the man was plunging the blade down at her chest. That was it. She was dead and there was nothing he could do about it.

Not really knowing where it came from, the assassin found himself in front of the assailant's knife as it plunged into one of his forearms. He was careful not to step on Jayde. Raven kicked up at the man and he sprang back.

"You really are Raven. I wasn't expecting you to actually show up for the girl. I'm going to kill her. But first, I'm going to kill you." Raven pulled the knife out of his arm and stepped in front of Jayde, dropping into a defensive stance. This one was going to pay. He'd see to that. The man rushed Raven, throwing a combination of punches and kicks, looking to finish him with a single blow. Ducking, he swept his foot around and knocked the man off his feet.

Raven rolled onto him and punched him a few times in the face, getting blood all over his hands. "You see, the thing about you lesser assassins is that you think you can take me out with just a few hits." He continued pummeling the man's face in, growing angrier as he spoke. "You're wrong! You're all fucking wrong!" He kept hitting the dead assassin, his anger blazing bright before he finally remembered himself and backed away. He turned and his eyes fell on the fallen girl.

"Jayde? Are you okay?"

Jayde screamed for Raven, praying that he could somehow get to her, but the odds didn't appear to be in her favor. As she saw the man standing above her, knife in hand, she buried her face in her arm, unable to face what was about to happen. After her father had put so much effort into 'protecting' her throughout her life, one of his own men was going to kill her under his request.

When the knife didn't come like she had expected, she peered up, jumping slightly as Raven seemed to move over top of her, protecting her from the blade. Slowly, she began to scoot away from the two men, her eyes never once leaving the scene in front of her. If the man killed Raven, he would kill her too. She flinched each time one of the men hit the other, silently wishing to herself that this would just be over, scared for both her life and Raven's.

As he moved over her attacker, she felt a small sense of relief. He had an advantage now. As he began to beat the man, she had to look away, unable to take anymore. She felt sick. At the sound of his voice, she looked up at him, her body trembling with fear. She didn't respond, but instead, slowly moved over to him, holding onto him tightly. She buried her face in his chest, refusing to let go. Physically, she was ok, but mentally, she was scarred.

Raven said nothing as Jayde clung to him, scared beyond belief. He remembered his first kill and shuddered. The man's face still haunted his dreams from time to time. And that was after all his training and conditioning for the kill. Jayde though, she was but a girl. A girl thrusted into something that was larger than she was and more than anything she was prepared to deal with. He knew psychological scarring when he saw it.

Slowly, so as not to scare her worse, he moved them toward the cabin. Once inside, he lit the lantern and sat her on the bed. He stood there a moment and let her cling longer. He didn't want to rush her but they had to get going soon. After while, he finally pulled her away and knelt before her. "I need to go get my weapons and we need to get moving. Are you coming with me? I don't want to leave you alone. I didn't know they'd be so close on our trail. I miscalculated and you almost died. I'm sorry."

Life didn't just prepare people for situations like the one she was going through. She didn't know what to do, or how to react. She had been taken away from her home, her own father was trying to kill her, and now the only person she could trust and depend on was the man who had kidnapped her. In a way, it was almost to bizarre for her to believe. How could this be real?

As they moved to the cabin, she held onto his arm, too scared to let go. Though she was obviously frightened, his touch seemed to comfort her. When the finally got inside, all she wanted was for him to hold her, but she knew that he was right, and no part of her wanted to stick around for round two. She needed to get away from there. Looking in his eyes as he moved in front of her, she nodded. Of course she wanted to go with him. After everything that had just happened, there was no way in hell she was going to let him leave her alone, even just for a few minutes.

"Its okay." she said quietly. In a way, she felt like she should be mad at him. After all, if he hadn't taken her in the first place, she would be safe in her home. But at the same time, she was so grateful for what he had done. He didn't even know her. To him, she had just been a part of his business plan, but now he had risked his own life to save her, and for that, she couldn't be angry.

Raven was gentle and walked at her speed as he led her into the woods. His arm was wrapped around her so that she felt safe. He needed her to know that there wasn't a person alive that could get to her. Brown eyes were constantly on the lookout for any motion that was out of the ordinary. Finally making it to his discarded guns, the assassin took a glance back in the direction of the cabin. He had no idea how he'd closed that much distance in such a short time.

Stooping down, Raven collected his rifle and reloaded it. He slung it over his back and picked up his handgun. Flicking the safety into place, he slid it into the back of his pants. This had been a long night and his vision was getting blurry. He had to persevere though, they were definitely not safe here. "Come on. Let's get you to safety and into a bit of civilization, eh? Bet you'd like a hot shower now."

The assassin led the frightened girl back to his van and opened the passenger door for her. "We'll be long gone from here in a few hours. I'll have you safe. I don't plan on leaving you anywhere alone for a long while. You're stuck with me for the time being." Raven felt responsible for the girl. He'd heaped a lot of bullshit on her plate in just a few short hours. He had a small flashback to his own childhood, and wondered recognized some similarities between the two of them. Damn. The poor girl.

Jayde tried to keep her eyes forward as they walked through the woods. If she let them wander, she knew she would imagine things that weren't really there. All she wanted to do was get the guns and leave. Leaning into Raven as they walked, she felt a sense of security having his arm around her. It was still a mystery to her as to why he was being so kind. She had just been a part of a plan to help him get to her father, so why was he helping her after she had caused so much trouble? Part of her felt weary, scared that this was still just a part of the plan, but at that point, she needed him.

She felt a sense of relief as they got into the van, feeling safer now that they were no longer out in the open. Civilization did sound nice, better than the middle of the woods. There it would be harder for people to go after her, or so she hoped. "I'm not stuck if its where I want to be." she said after a moment, blushing as soon as the words left her mouth. Did she really just say that? "It's not that I want to be here.. I just.." her voice trailed off, unsure of how to correct herself. Hopefully he knew what she meant.

Tossing her a sidelong glance, the corner of his mouth lifted just a bit before disappearing. He walked back to the cabin door and planted charges on the inside before heading back to the van. Cranking it up, he pulled out of the clearing and maneuvered back to the main road. The changes would keep whomever else was tracking them busy for a while. Or kill them if he were lucky. He glanced over to the girl in his passenger seat and sighed. He'd made a mess of this job.

"I know it must seem weird for me to be protecting you now after all I've put you through." He fell silent for a moment, thinking, before he continued. "I've good reason for doing what I do. I've got good reason for uprooting your life. I do apologize for it though." He paused again as he made a turn onto the main highway, checking his mirrors for followers before returning his attention to the frightened girl.

"Any questions you may have, any problems you have, anything you need, you tell me. I'm your guy now. And until you can stand on your own, you can lean on me."

Leaning back against the seat, she closed her eyes as she waited for Raven to return. She wished there was a way to completely just clear her mind. So many thoughts were spinning through her head. What lengths would her father go through to get to her? How long would she have to rely on Raven before she could live safely on her own? Despite all the different thoughts flowing through her mind, the main question was still why he was protecting her.

She opened her eyes at the sound of his voice. It was almost as if he had read her mind. She looked over at him curiously as he began to drive. Uprooting her life certainly wasn't his original intention, so why did he go through with it? "What the reason?" she asked after a moment.

Raven looked at her out of the corner of his eyes and thought about his answer. That was a very loaded question and he wasn't sure if she could handle the answer. But giving the amount of crap he'd put her through, perhaps he owed her at least that. Hopefully, it wouldn't bring her too far down. She'd been sad enough for one lifetime.

"I'm going to be honest with you. And my honesty will be hard for you to listen to. I really hope that I don't cause you anymore pain than I already have but I understand that I owe you the truth at least." He took a deep breath and spilled everything to the young woman.

"I'm an assassin. I was hired by federal law enforcement to take out your father. I was also hired to take out his biggest competitor, Mark Johnson. And to achieve that goal, I went undercover and was hired by Johnson to kill your father. I've been watching you and him for weeks. I made an attempt on his life and it failed; his security was just too damn good and I was sloppy in my performance. As an alternative plan, I thought to just kill everyone in the house but as I've watched you, it became clear that you really didn't know the extent of your father's pull." He took another breath and wetted his lips before continuing.

"And so I contrived to kidnap you and use you as the incentive to get him out of hiding. That's failed though. Now, I need to keep you safe from my fuck up and still get the job done to open up my chance at Johnson." Raven pulled off of the highway into a town, deciding they'd driven far enough away to stop for the night. "My job is still to kill both men. I wanted you to know that."

Her eyes seemed to widen as he spoke. An assassin? Before, she had just thought he had taken her as an attempt to get her father to change his business tactics, but that certainly wasn't that case. She knew that at that point she should be furious with Raven, especially since he still planned on killing him, but all her anger seemed to be directed at her father. She never thought that she would be able to hate the only family she had, but after what her own dad had planned to have done to her, she resented him.

Staring out the window, she remained quiet. What could she say? There was already so much for her to take in, and with each moment, it seemed like something else came up. After a minute, she glanced over at Raven. It was strange to her, and there was no way she would admit it to him, but she wanted to feel his touch again. Despite everything, even what he had just told her, she wanted to be closer to him. She didn't understand it, and it scared her, but for some odd reason she was comforted by him. Perhaps it was because of the fact that in just a matter of hours, he had shown more concern for her than anyone else ever had.

Unable to resist the urge to feel his touch any longer, Jayde laid down across the seats, resting her head in his lap. She sighed, closing her eyes. He must've thought she was crazy. In a way, she even thought she was crazy. He had just told her that he was planning on killing her father, and that in the beginning he had even considered killing her after his first plan to kill him failed, yet here she was trying to find comfort from him. "Are we almost there?" she asked, trying not to dwell on the thought.

Raven had expected her react in a completely different way than she had. He'd expected her to explode with anger, hatred, something. She hadn't though. Jayde had processed it, was probably still processing it, and decided that her anger was either not worth it or she'd decided to save it for later. Either way, his regard for her went up. She was a tough girl.

The assassin was extremely surprised when she laid her head down in his lap. Why had she done that? It wasn't unpleasant though. She'd brought out all of his protective instincts in such a short time. It had been as maddening an experience for him as it had to be for her. But he wasn't complaining.

"We're almost there. Just a few more minutes." Raven stroked her hair without even thinking about it. It felt like the natural thing to do as he drove. After a couple more minutes, he pulled into a motel parking lot. It wasn't the best place he'd stayed at but it wasn't a dump either. She'd be comfortable, clean, safe, and most importantly, she could sleep. He needed some himself. "Here we are. I'll get us adjoining rooms and then we can get you settled in for the rest of the night."

Jayde kept her eyes closed as he stroked her hair, the gesture soothing. If there wasn't so much on her mind, she probably would've fallen asleep considering how tired she was, but her brain just wouldn't seem to allow it. As she laid there, she wondered what was going through his mind. This obviously wasn't a situation that he had been put through before, and she couldn't help but wonder what he thought of it all.

As they pulled into the parking lot, she sat up, stretching a bit as she looked out the window to see where they were. Though it didn't look like the best place she had ever seen, she was just glad that it was a stretch from the cabin they had been in not long before. Her hand on the door, she was just about to get out when his words seemed to make her hesitate a bit. There was no way she would be able to stay in a room by herself without being a nervous wreck the entire time, even if he was right in the room next to her. "Um.. Do you think, maybe we could stay in the same room?" she asked, a slight bit of timidness in her voice.
