Rea walked through the barren lands of what used to be Maine. Since the nuclear war several years ago, everything had been destroyed. There were few people left, but she hadn't seen a single one in almost two years. She was nineteen now, and completely on her own. As she looked around, a wave of sadness hit her. Everything was destroyed. No buildings, barely any vegetation anywhere, and hardly any other wildlife.

The wind blew a hot, sticky breeze, even though it was December. It was like a desert, the sun beating down, and offering no shade to the depressing land. Rea's auburn hair blew around her, almost as if it were dancing along with the wind. She had green eyes, almost like emeralds, being of Irish decent, and was extremely small for her age. She was only about five foot, maybe a hundred pounds.

As Rea walked, she gripped the edge of a crow bar she carried with her. She had to find food somehow, and used the bar to kill off any animals she could find, food for herself. Most of the time it was a wolf, as their population had grown lately, and she began to find more and more of them. The wolves had evolved though, eating almost anything they could, and they were so much smarter now, making them extremely difficult to kill, especially with the lack of weaponry.

Daniel had lost his whole family in the holocaust, his mother, father, younger brother, his young wife and two darling little boys. The twins were 5 the day the bombs went off and mercifully were killed instantly. Daniel had been spared as he was in Alaska at the time. Working the oil fields. He had spent the last two years walking back to Maine in search of his family farm, only to find it purely scorched earth. Armed with his hunting bow, and an expert hunter, at least he ate well, and had been able to barter his surplus wild meat for other things he needed. In the disaster economy, he was a rich man. From the exercise of the long trek, and the fact he was well fed, he was an excellent physical specimen. He stood a powerful 6 foot 2 inches tall and was heavily muscled at 185 lbs. He 29 years old,and had coal black hair now down past his shoulders, and a full beard that set off his piercing blue eyes.

He had arrived in Maine to find his former farm simply scorched earth.

Rea continued to walk through the barren wasteland that was Maine. It was her hunting day, and she needed to find food, soon. She took turns, some days she hunted, some she looked for supplies, and some she adjusted her camp. She made camp about three miles where she was now, just a small fire pit and a tattered tent. As Rea walked, she heard a noise from behind her, and found a wolf, about a hundred yards away, rummaging through the garbage cans. It looked like it was rather young, and sickly, so maybe he would be an easy kill for her.

Daniel was surprised when he came upon the small camp. It was rare to find a tent especially left unguarded. Such valuable items were usually stolen if left unattended. The fact that it was still standing and vacant spoke to the small number of people who had survived. He looked inside the tent at the meager belongings stashed inside. Not so much to pilfer, as to determine what the nature of the inhabitant might be , and whether they were a serious threat. Though well armed. He had long since learned not to trust anyone.

He found a tattered shirt based on its size, the occupant was tiny, either a child or a small woman. He looked around the outskirts of the camp, and found a set of small foot prints leaving camp. He saw no sign of their return. he decided to investigate, and followed them across the dusty ground. He had gone about a mile when he heard the howl of wolves, clearly more than one. He hurried toward the sound.

The wolf had spotted Rea, and turned, snarling. She grabbed her crow bar, and held it, like a baseball player holds their bat. The wolf ran at her full speed, and when it came to her she smashed the bar into the side of it's head, causing the wolf to fall to the ground. Rea thought she had won, until she saw two more wolves running towards them. While she was distracted, she felt something sharp, almost like a knife, piercing her leg. She screamed, and looked down to see the wolf biting her leg. She smashed his head in again, before collapsing to the ground next to it. Her leg had a great deal of skin torn off of it, and was bleeding profoundly.

Daniel saw the wolves surrounding something. It was about to be a slaughter. He drew an arrow and aimed well the arrow pierced the heart of one animal and the head of the next killing both. The third took hold of the victim's ankle. He could now confirm that the person he had been following was indeed a small woman. As it started to jerk on her foot. Daniel drew the bow and fired again dropping the animal beside the young woman, he ran up and seeing the wolf she had wounded still attempting to bite, he picked up her crow bar and dispatched it immediately.

Since he wore only a loin cloth, in the heat, he had little to staunch the blood pouring from her wounds. she was soon going to die if something wasn't done. Wasting no precious time, he tore the skirt from her waist and tore it into strips and tightly wrapped her wounds. at least slowing the bleeding. He pulled a length of rope from his pack, and tied the four wolves in a line so he could carry the woman and drag them back to her camp. The meat was not only good food, but when dried was the closest thing they had to currency. The hides of the animals would make clothing and the bones and teeth weapons. He would waste nothing. Such was the economy of the holocaust.

He carefully lifted the near unconscious woman to his shoulders and then dragging the wolves behind him, returned to her camp. When he got back he gingerly laid her down on the makeshift bed in the tent, now naked from the waist down, and then gave her some water from a plastic bottle he had scrounged. Lay still and rest he said. I will cook you some meat.

He started a fire from the embers in her fire pit and cutting strips of loin from one of the animals, wrapped it around the crow bar and stuck it in the ground near the fire to broil the meat. The would have plenty of food that evening . He Butchered the rest and hung it up to sun dry. In all they had some 50 lbs of meat even after it dried.

Rea was amazed as she saw arrows flying, and turned to see a man standing there, shooting at the wolves to save her. She looked down at her shredded leg, that was bleeding heavily, and began to feel extremely dizzy. When the man walked over to her she examined him, and he seemed harmless to her, though she couldn't be sure. He was extremely muscular though, so it looked like he knew how to take care of himself.

Rea didn't try to stop him as her skirt was pulled from her, she just laid on the ground silently, wincing as he wrapped them around her severed leg. When she felt him lift her, Rea wrapped her arms around his neck. "Don't hurt me," she whispered to him, snuggling her head into his chest. Normally she wouldn't be so trusting of people, but at this point he was the only chance that she had to continue living. When they got back to camp, she happily drank the water that he had, and then did as he said, falling asleep almost immediately, curled into the blankets to hide her naked bottom.

Daniel hadded started to boil some meat and was making a rich broth. He added some wild onions, which seemed to be theonly vegitable which was yet growing in the scorched soil. He filled two old jars with the broth and climbed into the tent withher and handed her one, after helping her to sit up and lean against his bare chest. He tiny body felt weightless against him. "What is your name?" he asked "Mine is Daniel I lost my family on this very spot the day of the bombing." he said. He let her drink some broth and eat some of the cooked meat before he expected an answer. He could tell from her body, that she was very hungy, and had eaten very seldom. He finished his broth and then tended to her wounds. "I think you will heal if we can keep the infection down" . He said " I was in Alaska when it hit."

A tear escaped his eye, and rolled down his cheek and landed on her neck. " Do you have any family left alive? I'm all alone in the world."

Rea leaned in against him, and drank about half the jar of broth, before finally looking up at him. "My name's Rea. I'm alone as well," she told him, wiping the tear from his cheek. She knew that she must have looked extremely small to him, with her ribs visible and such. She wasn't malnourished skinny, just skinny. "Thank you for saving me." She looked at her leg than, and she could see where blood and soaked through the cloth. She was afraid to look underneath though, and see how bad the damage actually was.

Daniel looked through his pack and found a needle and a small spool of thread. he had become quite a scrounger in his travels, he had very little, but he had collected an amazing variety of things. He carefully unwrapped her ankle and looked at the gory wound the wolf had made. He poured a little of the hot broth on it using it as a makeshift disinfectant. "I'm going to stich you up," he said. "It will hurt a lot he said, but it needs to be done. He gave her a piece of dried meet to put between her teeth. "Bite on this" he said as he began the stitching. He didn't want to hurt her but if he didnt close the wound, he was afraid it would never heal properly.

Rea's eyes filled with tears as the broth flowed over her leg, but she put the meat in her mouth, and screamed as he began to stitch the wound. She knew that it had to be done, but it didn't stop it from hurting any less. Tears began to spill over her eyes, and with her free hand she reached down and grabbed his wrist, squeezing it tightly.

"I'm sorry i have to do this" he said. He took her heand and moved it to his upper thigh. "Squeeze as hard as you want." he said. I need my wrist free. He knew she wanted him to stop but he also knew he needed to finish. He kept on working and got her wound stitched. When he was through he pulled her into his lap and just held her hoping he could give her comfort until the pain subsided. He cuddled her hoping the warmth of his body might help her to sleep. She needed to rest to recuperate from her ordeal.

Tears streamed over her cheeks, and she squeezed tightly onto his thigh. She could feel the skin pulling together, and it was almost worse than the bite itself. When he pulled her into his lap, Rea gladly curled up against him, crying softly. "Thank you," she whispered, not only meaning for saving her, and stitching her, but for comforting her in this way as well. She needed to feel close to someone, even if that someone was a stranger.

Daniel hadn't thought about her state of dress when he pulled her into his lap, only that he wanted to comfort her. Wearing only a loin cloth, the skin of his thighs and the warm moist flesh between her thighs came in direct contact. He didn't notice at first but as the warmeth built between them he realized what had happened, and looked down to see her naked womanhood resting comfortably in his lap, only scant inches from his manhood. Though he struggled hard not to react, his body betrayed him and his manhood grew to its full hard length beneith her covered only by a thin piece of cotton cloth.

Rea felt him harden from beneath her and quickly skitted off his lap. She had forgotten that she was wearing no bottoms, and quickly covered herself with a blanket. A bright red color rose to her cheeks, and she tried her best not to look at his lap, so she just looked away. "I'm sorry," she mumbled, extremely embarrassed. Why did this have to happen now?

"Please come back", he said "I'm sorry, its my fault but then my body just reacted to you. You are pretty you know. He pulled a blanket in his lap, and held out his arms. Please he said, I didn't mean to offend you. I'm really sorry. We are so alone in this world it would be ashame to let a little thing spoil it."

Rea nodded, but kept the blanket wrapped around her. She climbed back into his lap, and laid her head on his chest, just listening to him breathe. "What is going to happen to the world?" she asked him, as if he knew the answers to everything. She hadn't seen a human in almost two years, as she was pretty much a loner, he was the first.

"I don't know", he said, " your the first human being i've seen in three months. I only saw two others and they were dying. We may be all that is left. One thing is sure this world wont support too many people. The wolves barely make a living. and they are resourceful. Lets get some rest. He layed back, and pulled her onto his chest, and wrapped a powerful an protective arm around her as they drifted off to sleep.

Rea laid on his chest, wrapped her arms around him so she wouldn't fall if she moved over. She was unsure of how she could trust him so easily. He didn't seem like the extremely friendly sort of guy, so why had he saved her, and why was he still here? She didn't ask him that though, just pushed the thoughts from her mind as she tried her best to follow him into a blissful slumber

Daniel woke more or less as he went to sleep, with the young woman he had just rescued still asleep on his chest. It took him a moment to remember where he was. He had grown acustomed to sleeping under the stars and waking up with canvas over head, startled him at first. he jumped at first and then layed still not wanting to upset her peaceful slumber. He ran his hands over her soft back, hoping to let her wake peacefully.

Rea was jostled awake as she felt the man jump, but continued laying on him as he ran his hands over her back. "Morning," she whispered, adjusting to look at him. He looked so peaceful right now, and she wondered how she looked. This was the first time in quiet a long time that she had awoken to another person, and it felt good. Rea hoped that he wouldn't leave her anytime soon, if even at all. Maybe he would stay, and they could help each other. It certainly sounded good to her at this point.

He sat up in the bed and cuddled her in his lap as they awoke fully. The sun warmed the air inside the tent and he knew it would not belong before they would need some fresh air. He turned his attention to her wound, gently pulling the blanket from her legs so he could check how it was healing.

"Don't touch it again," she said, as he peeled the blanket back from her leg. It didn't look very good, and the skin around the make shift stitches were rather swelled. Rea wasn't sure how well she would be able to walk on it, or if she even could at this point. She kissed his cheek as she snuggled into his neck, not wanting him to get up and leave her her. Rea felt an odd sense of need towards him, like she needed him to be here with her.

"I'm sorry!" he said not sure what he had done wrong but willing to simply cuddle her for the moment as it seemed what she wanted. He didnt want to leave her either. The world was a lonely place now, and he was happy for a companion, especially a pretty one. He held her close to him and tried to make her feel safe and comfortable.

"Don't be sorry, it's just sore," she said, realizing that her command had sounded rather harsh, but she continued nuzzling her face back into his chest. What an amazing thing this was, finding someone whom she actually cared about in a world such as this. Maybe that's why she cared about him though, because he was the only man she had seen in, well years. Her hair stuck to her face, as the warmth caused the tent to be like an oven inside, and she still wasn't wearing bottoms, so she didn't want to take the blanket off of each other. They might be extremely close for only knowing each other just a bit, but she wasn't that close with him, seeing her private area was just a little to intimate.
