The nurse handed the phone back to Charles with a grim expression on her face. "she hung up on me." Charles face turned Ashen as he went to consol Gino. Gino's wails could be heard up and down the hall as Charles told him that Aria was not their and wouldn't come. With what strength he had left Gino asked for a pencil and paper. He scrawled a note out with a shaky hand.
Dearest Aria,
I know that you must think me awful, and a selfish child. For that I am terribly sorry. I wish you all the best in the world, and want you to know that everything I owned, including the opera, has been left to you. Please take care of it and enjoy it. I wish that I could say goodbye, that I could just once more touch your face and and know that you really meant what you said when you told me I am not a monster. I am afraid I have proved you wrong, and that I am not only a monster on the outside, but on the inside as well. Take what I have left you and brighten your life with it, and know that for however long I live, I will be grateful for the brief time I had with you.
I will always be your friend, and I will always love you.
Gino.
He called his lawyer to the bedside, and gave instruction for the lawyer to deliver the note and he signed a paper giving all that he owned to her that moment, while he still lived. If he could not have her, he wanted nothing.
The next morning the lawyer knocked at her door to deliver the note and make arrangements to transfer the property to her.
