Pretty sure Gambit's first act would be to open a casino. Like a world-wide casino. And he'd totally have it rigged.

I'm a huge Terry Pratchett fan. If you haven't read his books yet, do it soon. Or I will find you. His earlier books are a little dull. I didn't bother reading some of them, but the nice thing about his Discworld series is that you don't HAVE to read them in order. Sometimes it helps, but it's not necessary. Absolutely delightful sense of humor. And yet, despite being primarily humorous, Pratchett touches on various issues, including the darker side of human nature. His characters, all hilarity aside, are humans first (except for the ones that aren't human) and characters second.

I also enjoy Christopher Fowler's Peculiar Crimes Unit books. Again, he's a very English writer. Lots of hilarious puns and quirky humor. It's difficult to read a page without laughing at something. Like Pratchett, he writes amazingly realistic characters who still manage to be entertaining.

If you're into horror books, I'd strongly recommend House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. I won't call it 'scary', exactly... but it is very... unsettling. Yes, that's the right word. It starts off really slow but, once the point hits, you realize exactly WHY it took so long to get to it.

EDIT: I'm going to start reading Dead Until Dark soon. Vampire book. I'm not expecting much, but I'll keep you updated.
