Phoenix stood out on a balcony ledge of his tree top home deep in the Emerald Forest. Deep in thought over what had happened the past few days and caring for his visitor. It had happened all so suddenly that it was mostly a blur in his head. Closing his eyes he went back to that moment...

Phoenix was soaring high among the clouds passing through the puffy mist filled vapor pockets when he had heard the scream of distress. He knew that there was trouble as it used to be what he did...protecting his liege from harm. He hovered slightly above a cliff and saw the two figures...one of which fell off of the cliff or jumped. He did not know and did not wait to find out. He dove and caught up with the falling person quite quickly.

Holding the person close and not looking at them he just flew straight to his home deep in the Emerald Forest. His powerful wings made the journey seem effortless even while carrying a weight. He landed on the balcony and strode inside. He walked into the bedroom and laid the person on the bed.

He now had a chance to look at them. She was human about age 19 or so. She seemed exhausted like she had been on the run forever. He covered her gently and removed himself from the bedroom giving it up to the girl.

Over the next few days he cared for her and helped nurse her back to health. He heard the sound of his visitor beginning to stir from deep within his treetop sanctuary. He turned and leaned back against the railing.

Trance had thought so much over the past few days, never waking after she fell faint in his arms that night. She thought, perhaps, that she had indeed fallen to death that night, and that he was an angel. She did not believe in god though. Maybe it was just an allusion. However, she gasped, being ripped violently from her peaceful, thoughtful sleeping state to wake. She panted heavily, eyes dancing about the room. Where was this place? Was this death? But she could feel it, hear it. The pounding of her heart in her chest. The loud noise in her ears.

She remembered it, the feeling of his strong arms around her. His warmth against her deathly cold body. And how suddenly safe she felt in his embrace, high above the world below. Where was her angel?

Phoenix left the balcony and walked into the main room of his towering villa and made his way toward the bedroom.

He entered and framed the doorway. "I see you've finally awoken fully," he said softly, "How are you feeling now?" He asked.

Phoenix couldn't tell if she was frightened of him or not. He secretly hoped that he did not scare her, especially after caring for her over the past few days.

"I'm glad you are awake," he began, "Tell me...what is your name?"

Trance looked up towards him, getting a better look at her hero. She wasn't afraid of him. He saved her, after all. If, that is, she was alive. If she was dead, then perhaps he was her..guide?...

She sat up in the bed, legs criss crossed and hands linked together in her lap. "I feel okay..A little weak, maybe.." She cocked her head to the side, a little. She couldn't take her eyes off his wings. He was a very handsome man. But the beauty of his wings was powerful. "Thank you..." She mumbled, as she stood slowly from the bed, moving towards him. "What..may i ask, are you?.." She said, gaze glued to his feather wings still.

"My name..My name is Trance."

"I'm pleased to meet you Trance," Phoenix said, "my name is Phoenix." He paused a little bit while he thought about himself. "My race is known as Icarans." he told her. "We are guardians, we watch over people..well one person really."

He stretched out his wings and folded them neatly behind himself and continued.

"From the day we are created we are given charge over one person to protect them from and guide them from danger," He explained, "until one of us dies" His voice trailed off.

He slowly approached to where she was sitting

"That is why I'm living here amongst the trees alone, my protege died of old age and I was left not knowing what to do...so I left"

Phoenix turned and spread his wings once more displaying ornate markings on his back

"We are marked like this at creation and somewhere in the world a person also receives similar markings," he told her as he turned around again his wings folded as neatly as they were before, "These markings link us with whom we are to protect and will burn slightly if they are in danger alerting us to it so we can rescue them" He stopped for a moment and then continued, "My protected died of old age so there was no warning of danger and in my minds eye I saw him pass into the afterlife and could feel that he was at peace. I then came to live here in the Emerald Forest and have been here for nearly 120 years. I know I do not look like I'm 200 years old but in your terms I'd be about 30 human years old"

He knelt down beside her and smiled softly "tell me about yourself?"

Trance was silent as he spoke, listening carefully. She didn't want to believe the crazy things he said but she knew better than to believe the inhuman did not exist. "Well.. I am not..shy to the paranormal world. But you..what you are, I've never seen. I was born to a cult, one that believe they could feed off the power of the supernatural..but feeding on their blood. As children...we were bathed in it. ANd when he turned 15 we were to take our first drink of the bloods. First the black bloods of the vampires. Then the hot blood of the lycan's. I refused, I ran away. I've ran ever since, unable to fight against them. Last night it was death, or go back. And I refused to live like that.." She

Phoenix seemed a little disgusted by the act of drinking blood of another living creature. He knew that strange rituals did exist in the world however, his world being no different. "I can see why you ran away," he spoke calmly to her, "I don't imagine that I could ever do that...your people must be very strong willed."

Phoenix moved and to stand against the wall once more taking a moment to stretch out his wings to their full 20 foot span.

"My people, the Icarans, have exists for many aeons," he told her, "for as long as I can remember we have always watched over those with whom we are bonded."

There was something about this girl, something special that Phoenix could not quite put his finger on, but, he knew he had to keep her close to him as if she was the one to decide the outcome of some kind of trouble.

"Was there any particular reason why you did not want to drink the blood of the vampire and the lycan?" He asked

Trance was distracted by his wings as they stretched. An amazing feat in her mind. She wondered, for a moment, what his soft looking feathers felt like. But her eyes returned to him when he spoke again. She smiled a little bit and laughed faintly. "I don't want to sound weird or crazy or anything...but i almost as if..I was more like them..then my own people. The the world my parents despised, killed for power that didn't exist..was the world I belonged in. The world I belonged to.. My parents drank and bathed in blood. Believing they could gain their magic from this. They'll never know how close they were to actually doing something. But drinking it, bathing in it, will do nothing. Only by blood letting can humans gain magic. Bleeding to the point of almost death..and then having the blood of a paranormal creatures seeped into your wounds.. My knowledge could help them. But unlucky for them, I want nothing to do with that."

Phoenix caught Trances' gaze just a little. "I never really thought about that stuff before," he said, "being a super-natural creature and all."
He thought about what she had said about how to truly gain powers from creatures like himself.

His gaze turned sideways just a little. He had never been this close to a human before, never spoken with them before, never even had bodily contact with one before plucking her from her death drop. His mind began to race with various scenarios. His heart, he noticed, was beating very fast.

His displayed a sweet smile and slowly and carefully he unfolded a wing and brought it close to her cheek so she could feel the powerful softness it contained

Trance noted in her mind that his chest was rising up and down rather quickly, as if he were feeling some sort of nervousness set in. She was distracted, however, when his wing moved very close to her, just barely touching her cheek, she smiled softly at the light touch and finger her hands, fingers stroking gently over the feathers. The softness was unlike anything she had ever felt before. She was in owe of him. "So very soft.."

The feeling her fingers gave him as they stroked over his feathers was like none he had ever had. To say he felt nervous in the presence of a human, let alone a human female was an under statement.

Phoenix folded his wings back behind himself and fell to his knees in front of Trance. His heart thumping loudly in his ears now. Taking a deep breath in a vain attempt to calm himself he reached out and traced her cheek with the back of his fingers. Her face was soft to the touch and this made him smile even more.

*no you mustn't* his mind began arguing with his heart, *You must not get attached to this human*

Phoenix steeled his nerves and forgoing any warning that his brain was giving him, leaned in and pressed his lips to trances' in an uninvited and totally taboo kind of way. His lips only stayed but a moment. He pulled his head back and lowered his eyes "I'm sorry" was all he said

Trance was startled and slightly considered when he very suddenly settled to his knee's before her. Was something wrong? He looked..afraid in a way, as if something were wrong. His fingers touched her cheek and she blushed softly. "Phoenix..." He leaned closer and she felt him press his lips to her's. Her face turned a bright red and she quivered under the sign of affection, heart thumping loudly in her chest. "Phoenix.." She said again whe neh apologized. "It's..it's okay...I'm not mad.." She smiled softly. "Uhm..WHere are we now? I'll need to go home.."

Phoenix stood up from where he was kneeling just in front of her.

"yes...home you're right" he said, "you should go home so you can save your family"

Phoenix walked out of the room and out onto the balcony.

*What a stupid move you fool* His brain shouted at his heart. *Did you actually think that an Icaran and a human would make a couple?*

The thoughts pounded inside his head making it hurt.

It was true that in the history of his race an Icaran had never paired with a non Icaran.

He cursed himself more and more for crossing the line. *She probably thinks you're strange enough with your wings now you've gone and kissed her...you fool!!* His thoughts still echoed in his head.

Finally feeling calm enough to return to trances' side he brought back with him a rolled up map. Phoenix unrolled the parchment and pinned it up on the wall. he took a step to the side and pointed to a large group of trees.

"This here is The Emerald forest," he gestured, "where is your village?"

Trance was confused. He seemed to flustered about things. The thoughts in his head almost loud enough for her to hear. She stood. "I don't have a family to save. I live on my on on the edge of the forest. I go to the village rarely. They know the cult I came from and they don't believe me when I say I am not like them.."

She touched his arm softly. "Why are you acting so flustered? You appear as if something is deeply wrong. Did I offend you somehow? I apologize if I have done anything wrong.."

She cocked her head to the side, a thoughtful and concerned look in her eyes. She remembered something though. He spoke of markings on his back before. But..there was no marking there when he turned his back to her..

Phoenix was clearly befuddled. Mostly because of Trance, here with him. He had never been with a human let alone a female human for this length of time. Add to that the fact that he had been here by himself for just over a century.

"no," he said softly, "you did not offend me in anyway," Phoenix turned his face away. "If anything I'm the one who should be the offender."

Phoenix approached her once more

"I should have never kissed you and for that I am sorry," he apologized, "That is why I'm acting so strangely, I'm developing feelings for you and while my heart says it feels right, my brain tells me no that I should not mix species."

Phoenix turned and started to leave

"I need to rest in order to gain some strength to be able to take you to your home...perhaps you should rest too."

Phoenix left the room and wandered down to where his couch was. It was not the best place to rest but will have to do.

Trance seemed only more confused by his words and rash explanation. She thought for a moment, was it really that bad? The kiss? Was it that bad that he never wanted to do it again? She watched him leave in a bit of a rush. "Strange man..strange man indeed.." Feelings? He'd known her for what, two hours? Not counting the day or so that she was asleep. She moved to the bed, blowing out the candles that lit the room. But she didn't sleep. This was all so confusing for her and she found herself to...nervous to sleep.

Phoenix barely slept on the not so comfortable sofa. He tossed and turned and faded in and out of strange dreams that only served him pain. His visions took him back to long ago, back when he was still a guardian. In his village there had been another Icaran, a female Icaran that he was quite fond of and was almost going to mate with until that fateful day.

"AMBROSIA!" Phoenix yelled and sat bolt upright. He was covered in a cold sweat and shaking all over

Trance shot out of bed at the sound of yelling, heart thumping loud in her chest. She looked around frantically and heard nothing more, but she stood, moving quickly in the direction it came from. She found Phoenix sitting up right on the couch, shaking and body wet with sweat. She moved to him in concern, placing her hands on his shoulder's. "Phoenix? Whats wrong?"

Phoenix felt quite comforted by Trances' touch. Finally feeling calm he turned to her and explained his actions over the past few hours.

"Ambrosia was a friend, almost a mate, of mine," he began, "She was killed for a bounty. The assassin was the creature I protected and I did nothing to stop him." Phoenix lowered his head and started to softly weep. "That is why I have exiled myself to this place...I couldn't surround myself with my clan anymore."

Phoenix turned back to face Trance. "Once again I apologize for kissing you, I barely know you," Phoenix explained, "it is just that you remind me of Ambrosia so much my judgement was clouded."

Phoenix felt a little better now that he was able to open up to Trance, to be able to tell her a little about his past

Trance nodded her head slowly, fingers stroking his shoulder lightly. "It's alright, I understand. after being alone for so long, it must be hard to be around someone again." She smiled softly. "You don't need to apologize anymore, i told you, I'm not mad about it." She looked to the window and and saw the rising sun.

Phoenix felt as though a huge weight had been lifted off of his chest and was re-assured knowing that trance understood. His eyes followed her gaze and saw the sun coming up to greet a brand new day. Suddenly it dawned on him that he had nothing to eat in his home.

"I want to thank you for understanding," he began, "It has been so long since I've had company...so long in fact that I don't keep food on hand I just usually go out into the forest and gather a few things now and then."

Phoenix felt a little embarrassed by this. He held out an arm to Trance

"care to join me for some early morning munching?"

Trance stood and took his arm softly. "It's alright. I'm used to doing the same myself. Like I said..I don't go into the village a lot, and I live on my own." She moved out with him, but was shocked to find they were..so high up. She thought the house was on the ground. "Ohh.oh my.." She held a little tighter to his arm, for fear of heights.

Phoenix felt her grip tighten and realized that they were 35 feet in the air. He skillfully scoops her up into his powerful arms and spreading his wings jumps from the balcony and drifts softly to the ground below. Once on solid earth he drops her legs so she can stand fully.

"So, what are you hungry for?" he asked. "There are some sweet berries over there," he said pointing to the north. He spun around on his heels "on that side there we can find various wild vegetables"

A wry smile formed on his face. "of course as an Icaran, I can fly to wherever you like...if you know of something better?"

Trance thought for a moment, remebering the food she had gathered yesterday morning, before she even knew her cult was after her again. She smiled and looked up at him. "If you can take me back to my little, quite pitiful house near the edge of the forest..I can make you a proper breakfast. It is the least I can do after you saved my life." She still held his hand, even after her set her down. "Besides. A man needs a good, hardy meal. I have chickens, so I have eggs and homemade bread. And there is an orange tree not far from my house, I can make you orange juice."

It had been too long since Phoenix had a proper meal let alone breakfast, and she was offering to make it for him.

"That sounds absolutely delicious," he licked his lips.

Phoenix scooped Trance up into his arms once and with a few powerful wing beats was airborne once again. He soared high over the trees giving Trance a seemingly birds eye view of things. He mostly glided effortlessly using the air currents and updrafts to propel them along.

There on the edge of the forest was her humble home just as she had said.
He beats his wings to help slow their descent. Once on the ground Phoenix placed Trance down.

"Anything I can do to help?" he asked
