Mari Sonara was, to put it bluntly, a genius. More than once it had been commented that she was perhaps one of the greatest minds that had ever lived, all by the age of 16. Her whole life Mari had showed her intelect. By the age of 3 high school mathematics had been little problem for her. By the time she was 5 she was tackling Math and Physics problems that would have college students trying hard. When she had been 7 years old Mari had been detained and questioned by Homeland Security after turning up at her school science fair with a fully working miniature nuclear generator. That was when her father had really started to take a true interest in her. For most of his career Mari's father had been laughed at and mocked for his outlandish theories, nonsense about being able to pierce the barrier between this world and parallel ones bordering it. The existance of parellel worlds was considered barely theoretical in Quantum Physics, nobody was truly convinced it was true, just a theory. He however insisted that they existed. It wasn't until his daughter demonstrated her genius once again that he finally gained the respect he had so longed for.
Shortly before her ninth birthday Mari had been in her father's home study, apparently doodling on some of his papers. As usual he had chased her away, and had been about to simply throw the papers away as usual, but this time he actually took the time to look, and what he saw amazed him. Mari hadn't been 'doodling' by any means. She had been going through his equations, correcting them, making them workable! Within months he had a working prototype, demonstrating to the scientific community his new technology, able to open a microscopic portal to a parallel dimension. It had been for mere seconds, but it had been enough.
7 years later Mari was 16, two PhD's in advanced physics to her name, working closely with her father on what was officially a joint project, but everyone knew that Mari had become the real brains behind it. She had discovered that her fathers dimensional portals, during the brief time they were open, released a great deal of raw energy, far more than it took to open them in the first place. Now, Mari was stood infront of her greatest achievement yet, a completely new power generator. It was designed to open not just one or two, but 50,000 tiny dimensional portals all at once, absorb the energy from them, and then use the energy released in it's collapse to open up a new portal. Apart from the initial energy it took to start up the generator, it would become completely self sufficient, completely clean, a truly limitless source of energy.
"We're ready to start up" "All systems are showing stable Dr Sonara" "Alright..." Mari nodded, looking up at her generator. Everyone else was in the control room, but she wanted to be near her creation when it was started for the first time. She wanted to hear it him, wanted to feel it. "Alright.....start it up" Mari couldn't help but grin, the technicians in the control room running the activation sequence Mari had created, with some help from her father, and then moments later a low hum began to fill her ears. The girls heart skipped a beat. It worked...it was working! "Portals are opening....energy collection is initiated" "First portals collapsing in 5 seconds.........closed" "External power source disconnected, generator is now self sufficient" "D-Generator is now at 250% efficiency"
"This is amazing..." Mari moved closer, gently placing her hands against the generator, feeling the ever so slight vibrations. She was so distracted she didn't even notice the technicians beginning to panic in the control room. "E-efficiency continuing to climb! Now passing 300%!" "Dimensional portal numbers are increasing....th-they aren't closing!" "Impossible, they....they're stabalising! They aren't collapsing on themselves!" Mari blinked, taking a step back as the hum grew louder and louder, some kind of light beginning to emerge from within the generator. Moments later there was a sudden flash, energy surging from the generator and engulfing her. Then just as suddenly as it began, the light was gone, the generator completely shut down and showing no signs it had ever been on. The only sign that anything had happened was Mari....now nowhere to be found.
"Unnh......" Mari slowly sat up, rubbing her head, fumbling for her glasses for a few moments until she found them, pulling them on and blinking to clear her vision. "What the hell happened....?" She started to stand, her legs shaking as she did so. She was outside now, the sky above her, walls on either side of her. "How did I get out here? Damnit.....I need to get back to my lab..." The girl turned, then nearly fell over. Her legs were still shaking, her balance precarious at best, but the stubborn girl wasn't going to let a little thing like not being able to walk stop her from getting back. Slowly, step by step, she began to make her way towards what appeared to be a street. She could hear people, talking and moving. Good, she could ask someone where the hell she was and how she had got here. Unfortunately, her legs chose to disagree, buckling as she reached the sunlight, sending her falling out into the walkway.
