What he spoke of Petre was true, she made her way back to the bed, laying down she couldn’t handle the utensils. Seeing the stool she knew he meant to feed her. She’d watched his hands moment’s ago playing absently with the water, anger welled up in her small chest. As soon as he said it she found herself wanting to scream at him. I expected to fall for you… any man with a heartbeat would… Yet he didn’t, hadn’t, called them tremendous. She refused to let him see the hurt in her chocolate colored orbs, “Thank you Dmitry.” She didn’t expect him to feed her. She never really expected much from him. Her own smile faltered as she looked into the blue depths of his own eyes, Opening her mouth she took the bite he offered and chewed slowly, leaving her head resting on her arms.
“I knew the moment he kept going with the lashings he truly wanted me to bear the burden of them. For me to say I loved you, killed him. He had always tried to make me say it to him, but I refused.” She took the next offered bite and ate it as well. “For me to willingly allow you to bed me was the final straw. I knew he’d be forced to go easier on me. Victor would not have stopped him if it were you lying there. I fear that you would not only not be able to work, but you would not be able to stand or move for quite some time, and then he would force us out of the circus or to pay off board some other way.” Pavla visibly shook, “It’s the, what ifs and possibilities that are the scariest.”
Pavla didn’t understand love enough to know that this small act of feeding her was such. She felt lost, she hadn’t expected to fall for him and she had, while he had expected to fall for her and hadn’t. The knowledge that any female could walk into their lives and pull him away from her scared her. At least with the information being out that they had joined it would deter some. Worrying her the most was Petre, and now, Victor. The numerous torments they could send their way was enough to make even the strongest of people break. Dmitry had his weak points, alcohol and protecting her. He’d proved that when he laid harm to Victor. Pavla had only one, Dmitry. If Petre was after them, splitting them up was what he would aim to do, she could feel it.
After eating her fill of the food she watched Dmitry eat and then rise. The goodbye was short, but she knew he had to work to support them. Thankfully Elizabeth and Glorianna had not yet charged them for all the doctoring they had done so far. Glorianna stepped in soon after and helped her into the tub of now warm water. Stretching out she could feel the warmth seeping into her body, easing the tension in her sore limbs and tired mind. She had promised him time so that is what she would give. Perhaps he would know in a month or two. She knew they were set to pack at the end of this week. The new location was a ways away but when they got there the weather would be warm, at night the chill was already hanging in the air here so the move would bring in more business.
Silently she prayed that in a week she would be able to move more easily. That way she would be able to carry her own weight and not have to rely so much on Dmitry. Elizabeth’s voice invaded her thoughts and musings. “You’re turning into a shriveled plum, let’s get you out and put on more ointment before the skin dries out too much.” Pavla rose and Elizabeth dried her off gently, once she was laying down Elizabeth dimmed the lantern a bit and opened the front flaps to let the warmth from Dmitry’s fire in without showcasing her bare body. After the ointment was applied Elizabeth sat at the table and knitted until Dmitry came back. Pavla drifted off to sleep relaxed and eased due to her soak and think. She resolved to be happy and show her love to Dmitry, whether he ever returned it or not.
