The city can be compared to a lot of things. Jungles and Mazes and Playgrounds... with the layout of the buildings and parks it was both frightening and fascinating. The streetlights in the neighborhood flicker on and off as a show of poorly being maintained. The moon was full in the sky but the towering metal heaps blocked most of the light... it was just past midnight and Lily was still a long way from home.

The autumn wind kicked up the few leaves that had fallen from small trees planted on the sidewalk. Lily picked up her pace walking, the soft sound of her flats against the sidewalk echoed in the air. She took hold of her jacket and clutched it closed around her. She was always nervous after leaving training. Listening to lessons about horrible creatures living in the city and knowing that if she was found out it would mean the end of her always had her on edge.

She wasn't a typical hunter of course. She was young and petite. Standing only 5'6 and with a skinny athletic build. She had pale skin from her Irish heritage, freckles and emerald eyes that her red hair sometimes hid from the world. She wasn't an only child so she grew up tough, but as tough as someone is... she still didn't fit Hunter material. Lily stumbled into it by accident, saw things she shouldn't have seen and was taken in by a mentor to protect her life.

But still, for all the training she had gotten it was nights like this, walking home alone in the dark... and the streets were uncomfortably empty. She tried to make sure she walked closer to the road with each alleyway she passed but... she didn't know how much good it would do.

It had been at least two years since he had returned home, things had become complicated in his life so he stayed away that is until now, his name was Drake and he was a vampire. Not by choice but he was one nonetheless, it had been during college he had been out with friends just having fun when he saw a beautiful woman, she was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen in his life and he could not look away. When she left the party of course he followed and the next thing he knew he was grabbed from behind and bitten on the neck, Drake was not a weak man but even as he struggled violently the arm around his neck was like steel there was never a chance of him getting away.

He passed out due to the amount of blood that he lost and the next thing he knew he was crawling out of a freshly dug grave with a thirst that could not be quenched by normal means. The woman stood over him but now he did not think her so beautiful, she was was pretty and some might call her beautiful but whatever trick she had pulled over his eyes was gone now and he did not find himself drawn to her as he had before. Not that it mattered as she was simply his maker now, she taught him the ways of the true vampire made him into the perfect killing and seducing machine, he wanted to be free of her though instead of constantly being around her, she had turned him into what she wanted not what he wanted.

And now he had that chance, there were hunters in his hometown that he had been sent to deal with and if he did as his maker asked she would release him from the bond that kept him close to her. His broad build easily noticed as he walked down the streets, he stood as five foot eleven almost six feet tall, his body may have been broad but he was not big like most out there in fact one could say he had more of a lean athletic build that hid his real muscle. His skin smooth as freshly made glass and only a bit paler than most people, contrary to belief vampires did not become pale after turning, they kept their natural skin color they just couldn't get a tan after that. His hazel eyes took in some of the old sights of his hometown.

His hair a stream of mid length fiery red hair that was unkempt as he did not bother to comb it tonight, he was heading down the street in a lazy walk as he listened for any strange sounds, maybe the sound of weapons colliding or someone yelling instructions to someone else. It was his first night back in town so he did not expect to find any of the hunters but it could not hurt to look for them before he arrived at his old home he thought to himself.

Somewhere in the distance the sound of a police siren wailed out. Lily was crossing through gangland, the worst part of the city... she tried to avoid it she missed the subway home and wasn't going to sit around another half hour to wait for it. Her hand inside her pocket clutched the small wooden stake she kept on her for protection. It was funny how a simple sharp piece of wood could protect you from a gangbanger or a vampire, depending on who comes knocking. It was thick with a fine point and had a metal brace at the bottom to stop it from splintering against bone.

She looked behind her every few minutes in a quick, almost paranoid turn. She let her thoughts drift to a warm bed and the quiet of her house for a moment, though she tried to stay alert... she was tired and sore, training to be a Hunter involved being hit and thrown, learning how to run and jump and land properly. She wasn't ready for a real hunt yet and her aching muscles reminded her of how far away she was. She was happy enough knowing that unless a Vampire actually attacked her, she wouldn't be known for being a Hunter... she was too new.

Lily huff'd then paused on the sidewalk. She took her hands from her jacket and pocket to take a moment to tie her hair up in a small ponytail, tired of having it fall in front of her eyes. She was dressed in a pair of Gray Yoga Pants and a black mesh shirt with a black undershirt beneath it. Anybody on the streets might have mistaken her for a party girl or a late night workout girl. Her mentor had always had a bit of disapproval in the way she dressed, but she always replied that she wanted to be comfortable to work out.

She noticed something ahead of her and slowed her steps, it was too dark and the figure was too far away to make out, but it looked like a single man. Her heartbeat increased as she shoved her hand back into her pocket to grip the stake... just in case.

Drake yawned lightly into the night air as he heard her heartbeat behind him, he could tell it was a female by the way she smelled and by the way she walked, the soft sound of her feet balanced rather than stomped into the ground as most men walked. Her heart was going very fast at the moment, he could sense the wariness from it he could feel her getting ready for anything which made him frown a bit, he was certain he found a hunter at the moment but the way she was reacting to him was as if he was human. Now maybe he had been over thinking things just seconds ago but he was certain she knew what he was, but at the same time now that he listened to her footsteps carefully she was not trying to sneak up on him.

She wasn't a hunter he thought to himself calmly, there was no way a trained hunter would come up behind a vampire in such an amateurish way, he smiled to himself now as he began to whistle. It was a soft gentle tune that only three people in this world would know, the first would be his mother who had taught him the soft tune and the second would be his little sister who he had taught the tune to as well. He always enjoyed the sound of the tune as it made him remember a time when he was still human, now though he could barely be considered human like, he had fed on people, killed them and so much more all because his maker wished it of him and a newborn could not go against their maker.

The night air was a bit chilly but it never affected him even when he was human, he could remember times when he went out in the snow in just a pair of shorts because his little sister said that he wouldn't do it, the simple memory of him running back into the house shivering fiercely and snot running down his nose made him smile more so now. He wondered what his family had been doing here while he was gone, he had sent letters back to them but no calls or visits in the past two years because his maker said it was too risky for him to be around his family as a newborn vampire as he might feed on them instead. His jacket was a simple thing black in color and under that a blood red tee shirt that clung nicely to his frame, a pair of black jeans covered his legs and then a pair of steel toed boots were what he was wearing making it seem like he was a mix of many different feelings at the moment.

Lily moved again... closing the distance between herself and the figure ahead of her. Every step raised her heartbeat a little more... her mind flashed to self defense classes and her Hunter training. In case she encountered some sort of sicko or freak ahead of her, she wanted to make sure she had the upper hand. She had gotten closer by now... but then she heard something, and her heartbeat flew into overdrive.

She was frozen for a moment... there was a sound... a melody she knew. It was very specific and the very sound of it caught her breath in her throat. She wanted to say something but the idea that someone from her family could be standing in front of her paralyzed her. Her hand came off her coat and fell to her side, she blinked a few times and the moments that took maybe several seconds felt like a lifetime to her.

"Drake?" She finally managed to squeak out. Her voice was soft like a small bell, it matched her well. The wind kicked up and her voice was almost swept away with it, she wasn't sure if the man in front of her had heard what she said... or if she was just imagining things. Her head felt heavy and confused, and she could feel her heartbeat in her throat.

Drake could hear the sound of her heart beating frantically almost like she had seen or something that shocked her, he was not sure what to make of it so he continued to walk forward as if nothing was wrong. He knew she had been getting close but he was not just simply walking he had been listening to every movement she made, he could tell she had a weapon in her coat and that she was gripping it defensively rather than offensively which signaled that she was not an attacker but someone who only attacked when first attacked meaning he would be safe from a surprise unless he tried to harm her.

It was not until he heard his name come out of the young woman's mouth that he stopped walking, the voice to him was crystal clear and one that he would never forget as it was his only sibling. She was younger than him not that it mattered now that he was stuck at his age forever, he turned to look back and it was indeed his little sister staring at him as if he were a ghost which did not surprise him seeing as she hadn't seen him for a while. The tension could have been scooped up by a spoon at this point, the awkwardness even getting to him now, but he smiled at her and looked into her eyes with his hazel eyes, "that is my name don't wear it out" he said in a playful tone as he used to do when they were younger.

Lily smiled, she was overwhelmed at the sound of her brother's voice. It had been a few years, but she loved her family very much. He looked the exact same as when he had left, which was amazing to her. She had grown a bit, become a more full young lady and all. She took her hand out of her pocket and gave him a hug. Something made a soft thud noise behind her as she hugged him. It was the weapon in her pocket hitting the ground. She didn't seem to care or notice though, she was just happy to see her big brother again.

She was all smiles, her emerald eyes looking up at him. She noticed that he hadn't changed much in his style of dress, it was cold but he didn't wear a thicker jacket, he was simple in dress just like always. Even his haircut wasn't different. It was as if she was seeing him for the first time one day later. She was amazed.

Drake continued to smile at his little sister as she came forward to hug him, his strong arms wrapped gently around her petite frame as she hugged him tightly now. At the sound of the weapon falling from her pocket he knew what it was right away and if this were any other woman he would have bitten them in an instant, but he did not let even the smallest trace of discomfort show on his features he just continued to smile down at his sister. "I see that you are growing but not up" he said with a laugh as he brought a hand to her head "are you sure you haven't been getting shorter instead?" he asked in a teasing tone while giving her a little grin now.

He then pointed to the wooden stake that had fallen out of her coat, "you seem to have dropped your chuck of wood sis" he said so casually as if this wasn't a reunion of two siblings who hadn't seen each other in years. "What are you gonna do with that stake some vampires?" he asked in that same teasing voice, he acted like he always did as if in the entire time he had been away he had not changed even a little.

Lily laughed, looking up at her brother. She was so relieved that he hadn't changed even in personality or humor. She took a half step and shrugged, "You're just always going to be taller, I can't help that I got the short jeans... and no, nobody gets shorter." She said teasingly. She fixed her ponytail, her face still lit up with a smile. It wasn't until Drake pointed out she dropped the small stake from her coat that her smile faded a little.

"Oh... that." She said with a nervous laugh, "I just found it and thought it looked neat..." She said as she went back to pick it up. "Vampires? Ha, that's funny. No, I figured that on top of it looking neat if someone tried to attack me I could hit them and run." She lied, her heartbeat fluxed as she spoke, and she placed the stake back in her pocket. "It's dangerous in this part of town, and I missed the last train home... wait, why are you here? I thought you were going to be gone for another year or so." She said as she moved back to his side, "Ah, nevermind... it's late, we should get home."

Drake laughed as she said that he was always going to be the taller one, "hey there are people who get shorter it's called getting old" he said playfully still as she was fixing her ponytail. He shrugged a bit when a moth landed on his shoulder the wings fluttered so quietly she would not hear them but to him it seemed to be filling the void of noise with fluttering sound so he shooed it away for now so he could actually hear his sister's response to his question about the stake.

She was still terrible at lying he thought to himself as he listened to the very weak excuse she gave him about just finding it and thinking it was cool, she was in training she had to be he thought calmly, if she wasn't in training then she must have decided to do this on her own like an idiot he told himself. He went with the lie though "oh come on if a guy attacks you then you just hit him where he breathes" he said jokingly while pointing between the legs, "as to why I am home well honestly I need a break from school it is just overwhelming sometimes".

"That's what you get for taking such a heavy work load..." Lily said as she took her hand from her pocket, leaving the stake buried within it. She shook her head, "Yeah right... I'll just kick every dirtbag on the street in the nuts." She said and giggled slightly. There was a few moments of silence before she sighed, "So... there's something I have to tell you." She said hesitantly. She hated keeping secrets from family, and if her mother or father weren't on business she would have probably mentioned something to them already.

"It's kinda crazy..." she started, looking up to him as if trying to gauge a response before she continued.

Drake nodded as she said that was what he got for taking on such a heavy workload, "well if I don't then I don't get a good job then I don't get enough money to pay for stuff so I have to work three different jobs and then eventually whore myself out to desperate women but then one tries to kill me and I have to flee the country, you know how college drop outs are" he said in a joking tone as he grossly exagerrated what might happen. "And hey I didn't say kick them all just the ones that mess with ya" he said with a grin forming on his face now, when she said that she had something to tell him he cocked his head to the side and then frowned as she said that it was kind of crazy.

Suddenly his hand shot up and he held it up in front of her face in the stop motion, "wait wait wait don't tell me, you found out that you were a lesbian so you are now going to get a sex change operation using money you saved up from your time as a tutor or something goody goody like that right?" he asked in a playful tone as he wanted to lighten the mood at least a little bit.

Lily blinked, taken back by the over exaggeration of her brother's words. She lost her train of thought entirely and then after realizing he was joking she laughed. "Yeah, I guess you're right." She managed, his attempts to lighten the mood worked well and she gave him a playful punch in the arm. "Gross! I haven't even found a guy I like yet... you can't have me throwing woman into the mix too." She laughed and turned around to continue to walk.

"Well it's nice your home. Mom and Dad are going to be gone on business for a few more weeks at least so... the house is pretty lonesome." She said, they lived in a pretty large house right on the outskirts of the city, their parents had made a fortune doing some sort of stock trade and often went on business trips to meet investors and the like.

As they walked, her hand instinctively went back to her pocket, a habit she had picked up and often she didn't realize she had gone back to holding the stake until she had to take her hand from her pocket for some reason or another.

Drake could see that his little play with words and jokes had made his sister loosen up for sure, he continued to grin at her as she laughed softly at his joke. When she punched his arm he grabbed it softly though very dramatically "oh the power of rage explodes! someone help she has broken my arm" he cried out in mock pain, when she said that she hadn't found a guy yet he cocked his head to the side questioningly. "How can you not have found a guy you like yet? I mean what are you seventeen now? you have filled out nicely and obviously workout, let me guess yoga?" he asked teasingly "I mean there has to be a guy somewhere in those thoughts of yours" he said calmly while walking with her.

He smiled as she said that she had been lonely without their parents home, "eh parents smarents you know as well as I do they are more like strangers to us" he said calmly, he had never really seen eye to eye with his parents. He wanted to get into sports when he was younger mainly during high school his father said no, so instead of sports Drake had gotten into boxing secretly and he was damn good at it. He kept it a secret until a national championship victory caused him to be in the newspaper which his father read, he and his father argued violently the next day and Drake had creamed him right across the cheek, he never did boxing again and he rarely spoke to each other after that.

"But hey now you have your big brother to hang out with and stuff what else could be cooler?" he asked in a cheerful tone as he put and arm around her shoulder gently pulling her close to him as they walked home.

"Yoga?" She said in a confused voice as they arrived at the house. She opened the unlocked door and walked inside. It was a large open house, and the only light was the moonlight filtering into through the large windows at the far end of the house. "No guy... sorry. I've been busy I guess." She said as she took her jacket off and discarded it on the nearby coat rack. She took off her sneakers next and sighed.

"Well... yeah, I don't see mom or dad much anyway even when they are home. So I guess it's not really much different. I'm usually out anyway." She let her hair down and sighed, taking the stake from her coat pocket she placed it on the nearby table and walked into the kitchen.

"You hungry?" She called back into the room as she opened the fridge and removed a bottle of water from it."

Drake shrugged "well it just seems like what most of the young women are into these days, yoga and pole dancing" he said with a laugh, "you might think I am joking but there are actually fitness teachers with classes about pole dancing, don't ask how I know these things I just do" he said with that grin on his face again. He slipped his boots off as he entered the house even though it was technically still his home it felt a little rude to be walking around in boots, "yea well you should be careful about not finding a guy as you know time flies" he said in a whispering tone to add a bit of drama to the old saying.

"Eh of course they are still out, dad probably still has the same job with the same salary and mom still supports his every move like he knows everything right?" he asks while following her into the kitchen now. "No thanks had some dinner on the way here, you know the old hot dog place they still serve the best chili cheese dogs" he said happily while rubbing at his belly slowly, in truth he had fed on a young woman and then erased her memories of it ever happening.

"Yeah, pretty much." She replied as she flicked the lights in the kitchen on and sat down on one of the bar stools. With the light on and her jacket off the few bruises on her arms were finally apparent from her training. She had forgotten about them in the excitement of her brother's return. She took another sip from her water before putting the cap back on it.

"So... pole dancing and yoga. Sounds like somebody has been pretty busy." She joked. "And don't worry about me finding a guy, where's your girlfriend huh?" She playfully snapped back to him. Yawning softly after her statement she cracked her neck. "It's no big deal though. Most guys around here are scumbags."

Drake always hated that his mother would follow whatever their dad said, it made him want to scream at her sometimes, when he had hit his father of course his mother put all the blame on Drake because he was engaging in such violent activities. His thoughts were pulled away as he saw bruises on his little sisters arms, he frowned as she was speaking and then reached over to grasp her arm gently with his hand. "My girlfriend? she is somewhere far far away or maybe just at the college not so sure anymore since we broke up a few months back" he said calmly and smoothly lying to her now.

"But more importantly what the hell happened to your arms? did someone do this to you on purpose?" he asked in a harsh tone, "if they did there is going to be hell to pay you better believe that" he said in a firm tone. No one touched his little sister without going through him first, she might be human and he a vampire but she was still his blood and that meant protecting her.

She looked down as he grasp her arm, and then up at the bruises. Her heartbeat increased heavily as she began to think of something to say. She looked up to her brother and sighed softly. "I... well... no it's not on purpose.... I mean... it is on purpose but..." She stumbled heavily over her words as she pulled her arm back and averted her eyes from her brother. "I've been... uh... training..." she said, her words trailing off. "It's uh... it's nothing really..."

She had no lie for this, she hadn't even thought of what she would say to her parents if they ever found out, or if people at school did. Lily figured she could maybe lie and say she was jumped or maybe got into a fight with a friend... but she didn't have any story prepared for her brother...

Drake knew exactly where the bruises where coming from with the way she was stumbling over her words, they were hunter training bruises from hand to hand combat practice most likely he thought to himself. When she said they were from training he looked a bit confused and then looked right into her eyes with a wicked grin on his lips, "you are doing a combat sport aren't you? what is it kickboxing? MMA? what did you decide to take that dad doesn't know about?". There he had made up an excuse for her while appearing to be completely oblivious to her hunter activities, "when did you start? why did you start? come on tell me everything because this is awesome the little sister following in the big brother's footsteps of defiance" he said with a laugh.

Lily got silent and then offered a shaky laugh. "Yeah, sorry uhm... it's Self Defense classes at the Y... they do a Kickboxing thing but they are pretty serious. Sorry I've just had a long day I uh... I should go lay down." She said and then finished the bottle of water she had. "Sorry..." Lily said again before sliding off the bar stool. "Uhm... everything is pretty much the same in the house... I don't think mom or dad even touched your door since you left. I should be better tomorrow, it's just late and I didn't sleep much last night." She started making up lies so she could just get to her room and fall asleep... she was tired, that much was true but she was attributing her lack of preparation to answer her brother as part of her exhaustion... in reality she was always just a bad liar.

"I'll see you in the morning though, yeah?" She said as she began to walk away, on her way past the breezeway she picked the stake up and rounded the corner up the stairs.

Drake would have known this was a lie even if he did not know that his sister was a hunter, she was terrible with lying as always which is why he always knew when she had gone into his room to borrow one of his things. "Yea no problem you go get some sleep and what not after all things have probably been a little overwhelming for you tonight as well, I mean the awe and excitement of seeing me again must be amazing I know this and I will try to control my awesomeness a little more". His tone playful as she walked away "yea you should see me in the morning but I am going out tonight with a couple of old friends, you know the whole shebang about catching up and what not" he said while walking towards the front door slowly, he figured he could just use the drunk and stayed at a friends house to explain why he didn't come home in the morning excuse.

Her room was large and mostly empty except for a large canopy bed and some dressers and a large walk in closet. She barely fell into her bed when suddenly the sound of a vibration went off on her nightstand. She sighed heavily and turned over to pick up the phone. It was her mentor... and all the message said was, "Another dead... docks now."

Lily was still sleepy and she wanted nothing more than to just throw her phone under her pillow and pass out but she managed to drag herself out of her bed. She redressed herself... cargo pants and a tight, longsleeve shirt. She walked over to her dresser and removed a second, larger stake from under her socks and slipped it into the cargo pocket of her pants and took a second to take a deep breath before she went out the door of her room, shutting it behind her.

She went down the stairs, her eyes heavy with sleep and grabbed her jacket from the rack, slipping it on. She opened the door of the house back into the cold night without a second look back.

Drake was not going out with old friends instead he was going back to his maker's home as he knew she would want a full update on what he had discovered, he had to keep his sister a secret from her though or else it would be used against him. With inhuman speed he took off running, the world a blur around him as he ran at full speed, no human would ever see him or hear him unless he wanted them to and right now he just wanted to get away.

He arrived outside of the town within moments to the large home of his maker, she was apparently in the oil business or something of that sort so like a lot of the older vampires she had a lot of money. As he entered the home he could feel her presence overpowering his as she was far stronger than he was, he grit his teeth and made his way up the stairs towards her study where she was probably sitting in that leather chair of hers.

He entered the room the feeling of her presence nearly brought him to his knee's she was impatient at the moment so she was letting him feel that through her presence, almost as soon as he felt it the feeling vanished and he walked towards her slowly dreading the words that might come from her lips.

The docks were a good twenty minute walk. The moon wasn't as visible as the clouds had overtaken it and the wind seemed to be biting at her a lot more. She frequently found herself second guessing her lifestyle choice but in that walk she realized how much she hated it. She was scared... honestly scared and she took the stake from her pant leg and grasp it tightly. The docks were big and have a lot of large moving containers that turned it into a large metal maze. Lily called out, "Hello...?" Her voice echoed softly in the wind, she saw no sign of her mentor, Alexander.

She moved further into the metal catacomb of containers, looking around and trying to listen. A figured moved between the metal behind her... she turned hearing something but saw nothing. Her heartbeat increased. She turned back around and called out again, "Alexander? A-are you there?" There was obvious fear in her voice... she was regretting leaving the house now. "This isn't funny..." Her voice trailed off as the scuffing of shoes past behind her again and she turned around.

"Whose there!" She called out, looking around frantically. "This isn't funny!" Her fingers curled around the stake tightly with panic. She heard another noise behind her and turned again... nothing. She wanted to go home. "Alexander, I'm leaving!" She finally said and began to walk back the way she came.
