All Bite and No Bark

He let out a relaxed sigh as he walked into the garden, looking up at the sky through the canopy of the tree. This had to be his favorite room of the castle. His mother had personally saw to the layout construction, and he had spent enough hours in the scented air, almost as if he was able to speak to his mother out here since she had passed. His eyes closed as he took a deep breath, smelling the flowers around him.

What happened next was a shock to his senses, feeling her grab his face and kiss him, then turn away, spitting and wiping her mouth. He wiped his own, unsure of what just came over her. But then he heard her words, and he didn’t know if he had gone insane or not.

“But… what… that… huh?” He tilted his head. “Did you just talk? And what do you mean, ‘this place disgusts you?’”

"Its controlled...theres no freedom in the trees...."

She walked around untill she reached the back where a stone grey wall stood inbetween her...and freedom. Growling low in her throat she slashed the wall with her nails and then looked down at the ground. Wiggling her toes in the grass, she was happy to feel the blades under her feet.

Looking back at him she asked.

"How can you live like this?"

Her eyes seemed saddend. Like she pitied him in some way, as if she thought that he just wasnt living. It was as if this was the worst sort of captivity she had ever been in.

“This, this is what I know.” He said, opening his arms to gesture all around him, before looking back into her sad eyes. “This is how I lived for a long time. Although, I do enjoy the time I spend outside.”

He moved to sit on a bench near the middle, around the tree, patting next to him for her to sit with him. “I suppose we could come up with something. Don’t you see my kindness for you? Surely you could learn to obey so as to make your own life easier. It’s much easier to give you small boons when you are good. Like the steaks.” He smiled softly, tilting his head up to the sky, looking at the passing clouds.

“I can take you outside, let you get some real air, nature, if that is what you want.” He lowered his gaze, looking over to her. “But, I ask that you show your loyalty to me. I am kind to you, but if you keep fighting me, it doesn’t let me stay so kind.”

"I ache for freedom."

She said in a quiet whisper as her throat closed. Sitting down, she placed her hand to her chest and closed her eyes, it was like captivity damaged her, pained her. Opening her eyes slowly she stared at the blades of grass beneath her feet and said.

"I know that now...I will never escape this...and even if I show you signs of submission and seeming loyalty...I desire nothing more then to be free of chains and demands. I have lived through too much to want to live the life of a pet. There is nothing more precious to me... then the gift of freedom."

Standing up slowly she walked toward the exit of the garden. The guards suddenly tensed as if they were preparing for her to run...but she didnt. She simply hung her head and followed the path back to her room, and shut the door behind her.

She didnt want kindness or luxury...she wasnt some mindless animal to be ordered...she just wanted peace and freedom. But she knew that would never happen. This guilded cage was all she would ever get. And so...she gave up. Like her soul had receeded inside itself...and she was done. Curling onto the floor with her blanket she stared off into nothingness as if she were mindless.

He frowned as he listened to her, eyes watching as her form slowly left the small garden. He sighed, his head falling a little bit as he let his mind get lost in thought. Was what he was doing right? She was far better off with him than with any other potential owner, considering what he had seen of her thus far. He stood, walking by the two guards, dismissing them for the day.

It was a slow walk to his room, opening the door quietly, seeing how she was already curled up on the floor, staring at the wall. He took a moment, peeling his cloak off and hanging it up, before he went to her, picking her up and ignoring how she struggled, moving to his bed and sitting down on the blanket, the workers already having cleaned the room up in the small time they were out of there.

“You don’t see why you have to stay here, do you?” He said in a soft voice, running fingers through her long hair after he shifted her to be comfortable in his lap. “If you leave, you would be hunted down by those that want you. And they will put you back in captivity. You would be a slave to a cruel master rather than enjoy some semblance of freedom here. Don’t you see? Your life would be far better here than out there. Because any moment of freedom that you would have? It would be gone before you knew it.”

He sighed, shaking his head. “That is a life that you would not want. Here you can be taken care of. I can bring you outside with me, so you can enjoy fresh air and nature, but this has to be your home for your own safety.” He let out a small chuckle. “And anyway, wouldn’t you enjoy torturing someone that did the harm to you? Someone who actually hurt you?” His hand slid up, lightly rubbing where she had been hit the previous night.

"Its that little taste of freedom that I live for. I could go my entire life being tortured... If I got one day of true freedom. But...this is all im worth now. Im a pet. A mindless...obedient...loyal pet. Ill never be more then the dog at your feet."

She said as if her heart had truely broken. Though she may grow to like this place and like the fact that she didnt have to fear being struck down on a daily basis and scrounge for food...it would be a long time before she would be able to truthfully stand at his side and be happy to be there. She didnt know how to be domesticated anymore. She was wild, and she had a long road ahead of her.

Laying there limp in his arms she looked up at him and said.

"I could kill you right now. The only reason im not...is because I would never leave this place alive. Dont misunderstand me...I may do things to make you think im giving into you and changing...but i am far from trusting you."

With that she held her silence. She looked him square in the eyes showing the fact that she had Alpha blood in her, and that she did not recognize him as an alpha male.

“But, you would never be free. The moment you would walk out those doors and be on your own, you would be hunted. Wanted as a slave or worse by another. You would spend your days running, not enjoying the wildlife like you think you would be. Do you call that a life?”

His fingers spoke much gentler than his words did, slowly running through her hair, the other running along her arm. She was limp in his arms, and her words were cold, but not an ounce of fear went into his face or voice.

“You could, hmm? Well, can and will are two different things. You willingly rest in my arms right now. You speak bitterly, but your sorrowful eyes speak another truth. If you wanted to kill me, you would have done so last night while I was sleeping.” His body shifted, moving to lay down, holding her to lay her down against him on the bed.

His eyes locked onto hers, holding their own cold yet soft look as if he dared her to challenge his words. “You will relax in due time. I do not care when, or how. But you will. I look after your survival. And perhaps happiness, if you earn it. But don’t you think that I don’t have a hard side if you cross me.”

"What is a life when my every action is controlled? Id rather spend my life running from you blasted humans, instead of living my life under your boot. I maybe willingly laying in your arms for the fact that im in pain...but ill have you know that I fantasize your death...constantly."

She lied. She didnt want to harm the human...or any human. She just desired the freedom that she used to have...before she had been tazered by that dog catcher and turned into a Kori. She wished every day that she could turn back into a dog and never be able to turn into a Kori again.

Averting her eyes from his, she felt a strange feeling in her chest. In animals that become Kori's, they experience what is called a 'quickening'. Which is the tall tale signs of when they meet their mate. But they dont feel the full force of it untill she had her next cycle of being in 'heat'.

But her heart seemed to pound when he stared her down. She had felt this even the moment he had first stepped into the room. But she couldnt...no....she wouldnt believe that this overbearing annoying human was to be her mate. She just wouldnt.

Another thing about Kori's, was that they could not have sex untill their first heat season. And this was something that she had not had yet. To take a Kori before their first heat season would, most of the time, kill them. And it would force the Kori to go into a fit of rage inwhich they themselves can not stop...and most likely kill their partner.

His fingers slowly went through her hair more, sliding a lock behind her ears to uncover her face more. “You are a terrible liar.” He said, with a soft chuckle as his thumb brushed over her forehead. “You don’t think of my death. Such a pull is much stronger than you would think. You would eventually go for my throat.” He relaxed his grip on her as he slid, rolling onto his back an looking at the top of the canopy bed.

His eyes closed as he forced his breathing to go under control. “I don’t like forcing you to this, you know. I want to kill that bastard for bringing you here. But, you are now under my care, for better or worse. Hopefully not for worse.” He let out a soft chuckle, shaking his head. “This will be a good home for you, and you know that. You resist now… but you’ll see. I’ll bring you outside tomorrow so you can stretch out those legs of yours. And then we’ll find something you like to eat. Sound good?”

She listend to him speak, but once his hold on her released, she moved away from him and stood. Walking toward the bathroom she looked back at him and then back at the contraption that was supposed to sprout water.

"How do you work this thing you call a shower...I smell and I wish not to."

She seemed self concious about her self. Like she wanted to seem more human then Kori. Like she didnt want him to see her like a mangy dog...rather then someone worth respect and dignity.

He tilted his head towards the door, eyes still closed, hearing her question. “There’s two nobs that you can turn, the closest to the door is for cold. Careful of how much you turn them, because they can be rather sensitive.”

He turned his head back to look with closed eyes to the canopy top once more, hands sliding up to rest behind his head, elbows out to the side. His foot slowly rocked up and down, as though he was listening to his own music, keeping his breathing easy. So she was human in her mind after all. Guess we’ll see how she comes out of that shower.

The nobs squeeked when the turned on, hurting her ears and making them fold back. Getting the temperature to where she wanted it, she didnt even think to the fact that the door was open and he was still in the room she let the shoulders of her dress fall off and slide down her body to pool onto the floor.

Stepping into the shower she hissed at first as she gritted her slightly sharpend teeth at the heat of the water sprayed on to her sore muscles. Letting the water spray all over her, she took the shampoo and cleaned her hair as well as her body to make her smell like lavender.

Stepping out, she grabbed the towel and started drying her hair, when she turned her head she realized the door was open and quickly kicked it closed. Exiting almost a half hour later when her hair was suprisingly all combed through as if a professional did it. Her hair touched the ground and dragged behind her so she pulled some of it over her sholder to keep it up. Wearing a black clean night gown, she walked on her tip toes as if she was still a dog and stopped in the middle of the room. Looking at the room she didnt know really what to do next. She didnt feel comfortable, willingly laying in bed with a human, let alone a man.

He simply let his ears do their work while she was not in the room, a soft smile as he let the washing sound of the spraying water go over his senses. His body was relaxed, and he didn’t even bother looking around. He did jump as the door slammed, and he looked around for a moment before seeing she closed the bathroom door. He shrugged before letting his head back down, eyes closing.

It was the sweet smell of lavender that pulled his eyes open, tilting his head slightly to see her, holding her hair partially as she came into the room, then stood still, looking around and not knowing what to do. He simply patted the bed next to him. She looked surprisingly good now, considering how much she fought against human things. “If you want to be treated like a human, you have to act like one. Come here.” He patted the bed again, sliding over somewhat for her to have some more room, rolling onto his side.

“You take care of yourself surprisingly well. Did you always, or were you forced to?”

Slowly she crawled onto the bed to lay facing him but keeping a clear space inbetween them in which none of her body was touching his. Pulling her hair over her shoulder, she gently layed it in front of her so that it didnt get tangled.

Looking up at him she listend to his question and then said softly as if the memory pained her.

"Its more of a forced habit than anything else. I hate having others groom me...its painful."

She said, lowering her eyes again. Her demeanor seemed to change not that the tension of the inital being captured and chained event. She was gradualy calming down and being more seceptable to being in captivity again.

She slowly moved over to him, laying down and being careful with her hair as she moved. He reached forward, fingers slowly brushing through the soft strands of her hair before sliding up, gently caressing her cheek with his fingers.

“Ah, I see. I think I’ll let you groom yourself, then. You do a good job of it.” He was gentle with her, and he allowed her to have her room on the bed without him invading it. For now.

He rolled back onto his back, letting his eyes close as he stretched, moving his hands back behind the back of his head. “Tomorrow, or the day after for a hunt? Hmm…”

Her ears suddenly perked up when he said 'hunt'. Licking her lips and her eyes dialating with interest and excitement she said.

"Hunt? What hunt?"

Now, one could think this was the human in her trying to scheme for an escape, but this was infact the dog side of her that was getting excited. The idea of a hunt and chase got her tale wagging and her mouth salivating with the idea. Sitting up half way she asked.

"You hunt?!"

The sound of her voice was inquisitive as he said the words, and he couldn’t help but chuckle a little bit at her sudden perkiness. He turned his head, seeing her sit up some, smiling to her.

“Yes, I hunt. Deer usually. Hell, there was one time I went with a group and we took down a bear. Fearsome things…” He said, then chuckled a little more.

“What, did that perk you up? Are you interested in going out on a hunt?”

Instantly folding her ears down and becoming cold again, she turned her nose away. She was mad at herself for showing him the excited part of her. She didnt want him to think that she was warming up to him...she just liked a good chase. It streached her legs out and made her adrenalin pump.

Pouting like a child and spiting out a bold faced lie she said.

"No. I dont like to hunt."

She quickly then turned over so that her back was facing him.

He frowned as she turned away. She was a very bad liar. But then again, he had plenty of practice picking out liars by their tone of voice, their facial expressions, their full body language. He stretched slightly himself, looking up at the top of the bed once more.

“Oh? That’s a shame. Then you probably wouldn’t enjoy heading out with me. We usually chase two or three down before bringing them in for dinner. But I’m sure you could find something around here to occupy yourself with. Since you don’t like the hunt.”

He smirked, but only for a moment, his eyes closing and his head slightly swaying, as though he was listening to his own music.

Her ears perked up to listen but then folded back down more in sadness then anything else. Thinking for a moment she then said.
"Well im not going to go unless you force me to..."

She said as if she didnt want to go...she just want him to think she didnt want to go and then force her to go with him so that he didnt think that she was looking forward to it. After a while, her body relaxed as she had fallen asleep, rolling over, her face was serene as she slept deeply and relaxed for the night.

He sighed, shaking his head as he heard her words. “Alright then.” He laid there still for a long few minutes, until he felt her body relaxing. He waited a few minutes longer before he rolled onto his side carefully, arms wrapping lightly around her small form, pulling the blanket over the two of them and slowly falling asleep.

He woke early morning, before she did, and slowly slipped out of bed so he didn’t wake her up. He went to his closet, getting changed into a better outfit to head out hunting. Brown leather greaves, leather chestplate, leather glothes, and grabbing his spear.

Waking up when he rattled around in his closet she rubbed her eyes and looked up to see him dressed.
"Your leaving me here? I may escape if you leave me unattended..."

She taunted, trying to make him rethink about leaving her there. Standing quickly she pulled her hair from her face as she looked to the door and then back to him.

"You wouldnt want me to destroy your precious room now would you?"

She taunted again hoping to change his mind.

He came out of the closet when he heard her words, not surprised that she woke up. He made quite a ruckus in the closet. He adjusted his clothing as he spoke.

“You didn’t want to come, so I’m not going to force you.” He adjusted his gloves, before pulling them down and gripping, doing the same to the other hand. He took his spear in an easy hand as he walked to a dresser, pulling out a quiver and bow, before turning to her.

“Unless you changed your mind.”

Growling, she turned away from him and layed back down on the bed. She was like a two year old pouting. Hearing him rustle around she remained tensed as he moved about the room Though she looked as if she had fallen asleep...she still had her ears perked up listening to everything he was doing.

Shifting as if becoming uneasy, she waited for him to leave, she was going to find a way out...and she would do it whilst he was gone.

He prolonged his leaving as much as he could, almost idly inspecting the room as if to make sure where everything was before he left and she inevitably threw a tantrum about it. When he finally decided that he wasted enough time, he headed to the door, opening it and seeing the guards that were outside the door. After a moment of standing there, he turned around to face her form on his bed.

“Are you coming or are you just going to mope there all day instead of enjoying nature?” He said, his voice teasing as he leaned on his spear, the flat end of it on the ground.
