Samantha jumped at the sudden loud booming voice which shattered the calm stillness of the barn. She turned around, first left and then right and then left again. She looked around, searching out the source of the voice and saw no-one, then looked up. Still nothing. Her eyes were wide and she held onto the blanket a little more tightly. She stood, rooted to the spot, her breathing a little quicker than it was only seconds before. She had no idea what to expect next; no idea what was coming.
And then she jumped again at the slam of the heavy door. She turned and faced perhaps the very thing she really didn't want to see at that moment. Her mind raced, trying to think through and excuse, something that would sound reasonable. Her eyes drifted to the handcuffs as they circled around his finger.
"No... Im sorry. This... this isn't what it looks like. I was... I was looking... looking for some water... for a wash... to get cleaned up. I swear." She shook her head a little to reinforce her point but her eyes stayed focused on Smythe's glare.
