Katie rode slowly under the wooden frame entrance way and into the main yard in front of the Crenshaw house. She brought her mount to a stop and the water trough and looked around. The place seemed desolate. A couple of wagons had been overturned in the gun fight and they still lay on their sides. In multiple places the wood was splintered and holed from numerous bullets. Her gaze fell onto the small enclosure in the middle of the yard. Her memory drifted back to two days before. As she remembered the dogs, she looked around to the barn where she thought she remembered they had been brought from. In looking after the stock she needed to remember them too.
She climbed down from her horse and walked to the bottom of the steps which led to the house. She looked up and in her minds eye she could see Jack and Victor standing there, looking down at her. She took a step up towards the house and then stopped. Was there anything in there that she needed to see. Maybe she could ask the Mayor to get some of the professionals in town to come and out value everything then seek to liquidate it. They could check with the lawyer and see what they would have to do with the money realized from the assets. She didn't need to go in there now. Concentrate on checking the livestock.
She stepped back down and headed out to the stable. There were no horses there; she assumed maybe that they had all been used in the getaway after Calvera and his men arrived or maybe they had just broken free. If they were wild they would almost certainly find their own grass and water. Then she moved back outside and across to the barn. Stepping inside she suddenly realized she was a little nervous. She laughed to herself. But when she stepped inside she found the barn empty too. The dogs must have gotten out too. With nothing and no-one here, she could head out and look over the mine and the land
