When Thomas returned to the Union camp he was told of an officers meeting that he missed. The meeting had been called by General Sherman so Thomas knew that he was in trouble for staying away from camp so long. Thomas went to see General Sherman expecting to get chewed out by the commanding General...but it was overlooked since Thomas was a great leader of men and a commander who would fight which is what the Union needed.
Sherman told Thomas that his Cavalry regiment was to break camp then move southeast of where the Union lines were now. This would put Thomas & his men in a good spot in case the Confederates planned on sending their own cavalry to out flank the Union lines. Thomas looked at the map where General Sherman was pointing he noticed that where he was to make the new camp was only a few miles from the plantation where Anna Marie lived. This made Thomas very happy since this move would put him closer to Anna Marie...and it would be a great surprise to her as well.
For the rest of the day Thomas & his men broke down their camp then moved to their new site which was set up fully before nightfall. Once the morning came Thomas was again leading the morning patrol which made a stop out in front of Anna Marie's house.....but some of the men picked for this mornings patrol were picked for another reason other then they were soldiers.....they were picked because they could sing.
The men dismounted from their horses as did Thomas....then five men stood just out front of the house so Anna Marie could see them when she heard the singing. Thomas stood off to one side as the men began to sing the song Aura Lea
"When the blackbird in the spring, on the willow tree,
Sat and rocked, I heard him sing, singing Aura Lea
Aura Lea, Aura Lea, maid of golden hair,
Sunshine came along with thee, and swallows in the air.
(Chorus)
Aura Lea, Aura Lea, maid of golden hair,
Sunshine came along with thee, And swallows in the air.
In thy blush the rose was born, music when you spake,
Through thine azure eye the morn, sparkling seemed to break.
Aura Lea, Aura Lea, bird of crimson wing,
Never song have sung to me, in that sweet spring.
(Chorus)
Aura Lea! The bird may flee, the willows golden hair
Swing through winter fitfully, on the stormy air.
Yet if thy blue eyes I see, gloom will soon depart,
For to me, sweet Aura Lea is sunshine through the heart.
(Chorus)
When the mistletoe was green, midst the winter's snows,
Sunshine in thy face was seen, kissing lips of rose.
Aura Lea, Aura Lea, take my golden ring,
Love and light return with thee, and swallows with the spring. "
