Katie got the cans opened while he was in the woods hunting for something to go with the beans, and was just setting them near the flames so they could get hot when he returned with a bird that he'd killed. "I'm Katie Campbell. How long have you been a lawman, JP?" After the death of her husband, she'd been so sure she wouldn't fall in love again, but there was something about this man that seemed very appealing to her. She wasn't sure if it was because they had common goals, but she could see herself falling for this man.

JP smiled when Katie told him what her name was....but that bright smile quickly slipped away when she asked how long he had been a lawman. Thinking about the past was something that JP hated to do....for years he had been keeping his past locked away but now with Katie asking her questions it all came rushing back. His beautiful wife & their unborn baby dying alone while he was away fighting in the war. " Since......after the war. " JP said but his voice had become a bit choked up and wasn't the once strong voice he normally had then a single tear rolled down his cheek.

Feeling bad for bringing up bad memories, Katie moved so she was sitting next to JP. It seemed they had more in common than just their hunt for the Crenshaws. "I'm sorry if I brought up bad memories, JP." She fell silent, staring into the fire. She wanted to ask more questions, but she didn't want to upset him even further by asking about how his family had died.

JP nodded his head when Katie said that she was sorry for bring up any bad memories that he had. JP had spent a lot of time running from his past...maybe now it was time to put it all behind him. JP then began to speak about his wife Ellie who was almost 7 months along when she caught scarlet fever. Then died a short time later taking their unborn baby with her when she passed away. JP told Katie how he was away from them fighting in the war when the news finally reached him...then he told her after the war ended he left for the west and never looked back. While JP was speaking his large powerful hands were shaking...but he felt as if he needed to tell Katie about his past. JP pulled a small flask from his coat then took a quick drink after he finished talking. " I've spent the rest of my life running to escape my past.......afraid of to face the death of my wife & child. "

Katie gently patted his arm as he told the story of what happened to his wife and unborn child, feeling somewhat relieved that she hadn't had to push him for answers. Their tales might have differed, but the end result was still the same. They had both lost people dear to them but through different ends. "I'm sorry about your loss, JP. I am sure though that you would have been there for her final days if you had been able to." She gave him a weak smile before looking back toward the flames. "It wasn't your fault, so why run from it?"

JP thanked Katie for her kindness then explained that leaving his past behind...or as he said running from his passed made him who he was today. JP had no one to call his own after moving out west....he was always alone. JP said that because of what he was doing for a living he felt that it was easier not to remember the past....for if he did the first time he faced down a gunman looking for fame JP most likely would have let that man win and kill him..but that didn't happen. JP was alone in the world now and he had to act that way...never allowing himself the simple pleasures of a woman's touch.

Yes.....JP admitted to Katie that in all the years that had passed he never once was with another woman. " Everyone ends up running from something.....or even someone Katie. " JP added then as he looked at the bird he noticed that it was done. He took one of the two plates that were in his saddle bags placing some meat & beans on it then handed it to Katie. He then took the second plate placed the food on it then started eating.
