"Romantic?" said Lisa, with a giggle. "Oh, sweetheart. Your friend is the one who is here for a date. Perhaps she misrepresented the situation?" Lisa stood up, swaying her hips as she approached them and offer a hand. "Please, allow me to introduce myself. Lisa Rockford. You may have heard of my husband, Kenneth Rockford?"
It was hard not to, the oil tycoon was only a billionaire whose ancestors had laid claims on Texas oil a long time ago.
"Now I know how this looks, but trust me, I understand your situation completely! Claire brought me out here to meet the new person she was dating, didn't tell me it was Miley Cyrus of all people until I'd already agreed to double up with her. I'm afraid she likes to show off, and didn't want it to look like that's what she was doing. Am I right, Claire?"
Claire gave a girlish giggle that was very convincing but Miley knew to be a lie. "Sorry, but how could I resist? I mean, THE Miley Cyrus, interested in little old me? Didn't you feel like bragging just a little when you landed that Beiber kid, honey? Sorry I deceived you, but it's a once in a lifetime chance."
Lisa sighed and shook her head, smiling to Selena. "I'm sorry about this. Look, if it makes you uncomfortable I understand. But there's no reason you have to go just because of a little miscommunication. The food here is really good, and I WOULD enjoy someone here. I feel a bit awkward about it myself, but I don't want to run out on Claire. She's still my friend, and she still invited me here. Leaving would be rude."
It was subtle, the way she planted the idea that leaving would be rude to Miley. Though it was clearly lie after lie to Miley, they were great actresses. And besides that, Selena had already fallen into the trap. The perfume Lisa wore was much more subtle than Claire's had been at Club Sappho. But it was the same mix. It wouldn't force Selena to look at her or think of her. But it would make it hard not to. Give her just that tiniest of nudges that said this person was nice, this person looks good, this person is someone who I want to like me.
