Prosperity. It was not often a word one thought of when thinking of Merlot, the small farming village to the west of the Capital city. For years the farm lands had been burned, cindered leaving scarcely enough food for the people of the village let alone the neighboring towns they sold their crops to. It was in those years that the people had come up with the plan to appease their enemy. To placate the beast that burned their crops and ate their cattle. The mythical dragon lived in the far reaches of the hills just to the south of Merlot between the border of Merlot and Grtly. Yet the beast never attached the well-armed and populated Grtly, rather it focused its fury on Merlot and the people knew not why. Nor did they care. Not now, nearly six years later after the first sacrifice, the first offering. Every year Merlot offered one of it’s young women, it’s virgin women to the fire breathing dragon.
This year no woman wished to be given up to the beast. For not one of the six previous women had ever returned. Melanie wondered, as she was walked to the altar that had been crafted for this very purpose. It was nearly a miles hike to the beasts cavern and no man would go any nearer to it. So each woman was brought to the alter where the beast, every Summer solstice would arrive and usher them to it’s dwelling. Melanie had volunteered so that her sister would not be forced to do so. She had been ready to marry her promised. She was one of three girls and promised to the bakers son as the oldest. Their wedding was to be next week, except then it had been announced that it was her families turn to offer up one of their young women. Her older sister was already married with children. She would not qualify for the dragon’s terms. The dragon wanted a maiden, so that left her sister, Mia who was not even fifteen. Melanie could not allow that and had broken off her engagement with Rufus and told her father that she would be the sacrifice for the beast. That if there were to be a marriage between their two families it would be between Mai and Rufus.
Now, standing in her white ceremonial garb with a crown of daisies wrapped around her head she stepped up to the stone tablet alter. Her father stepped up to her, tears in his eyes as he bid her a fair farewell. When Mia moved to her Melanie whispered a simple request into her younger sister’s ear. “Live well…love often and be happy.”
The sun was setting and as it moved beyond the horizon the group of villages left her alone to await her fate and the arrival of the beast.
