The minute that he closed the door to her room, Caleb collapsed against it, his breath coming hard and fast. Closing his eyes and curling his hands into fists at his side, he slowly brought his breathing under control and fought to still his mind, which whirled with a chaos of thoughts and feelings that threatened to drop him to the floor. He’d seen a look cross her face when he pulled away initially, and though he didn’t understand it at the time, he got it clear as day when he returned with her food. She’d been on her side, her back to him, and hadn’t even bothered to acknowledge his presence then. Caleb was a man but he wasn’t an idiot; he’d clearly hurt her feelings when he left the bed and he understood why. How could he explain to her what he was feeling though, why he had gotten scared? It made no sense to him so how could it ever make sense to her? Pulling away like that had taken all the strength he could muster and his soul felt like it was being ripped in half when he did it. Even then, leaning against her door, he still felt a hard throb deep in his chest, pulsing as if it was trying to tell him something. Confusion was his friend at that point, confusion about what was happening between the two of them and confusion about his own feelings and thoughts. He hadn’t wanted to hurt her but he hadn’t known what else to do and now he wondered if he’d even done the right thing in the first place, for him or for her.
With a grunt of frustration, he finally pushed away from the door and headed back towards the kitchen, hunger now adding its own echo to the throb that rested behind his ribs. Grabbing a plate, he quickly filled it with food and sat down, staring out the window at the new day that was dawning. He wondered what new mysteries it would bring. It was hard to believe that anything could top the previous night, which would forever be etched in his brain. As he ate the food, he thought about the curious behavior of the wolves and the way they had come to guard over her. There was no other way to look at it than that, he knew, for she had clearly communicated with them and them with her. That brought Caleb’s thoughts back around to Rue and a smile graced his face; she truly was a unique woman, possessing both beauty, inner strength and intelligence. The unusual skill she had was also something that had caught his eye and for the first time he really stopped to think about it. He’d never come across anyone that could do that where he was from but maybe it was normal in her homeland. That explanation didn’t feel right to him though and as he thought about it more, the throb in his chest got harder, deeper, as if it was trying to tell him something.
Grimacing for a second, he ignored the pain and stood, dropping the plate in the sink. Pushing through the front door, he moved out into the sun and began to do his morning chores. The next hour was spent chopping wood, gathering eggs, picking vegetables, and feeding the chickens then he moved on to the horses. They needed to be fed and brushed down but the minute he got to the corral he knew that wasn’t going to happen. Each horse was running around the corral, tossing their heads and tails, clearly agitated by something. It was then that he sensed the presence and turned, looking for it. He couldn’t see them but he knew they were there. The wolves were still keeping an eye on her. Shaking his head, he decided it was time for some answers and pushed back into the house, heading for Rue’s room. Slipping in, he grabbed the chair and pulled it towards the bed, making enough noise to wake her if she’d fallen back asleep. “Rue, we need to talk” he said into the silence, wondering if she would.
