"Listen, if you want her to be doing something other than hanging about, let me come by and pick her up." Christian said to his mother. "It's only two weeks until she starts school again and she's doing nothing if she's not allowed to go anywhere." He explained again as his arguements seemed to work. "Okay, yes." He said, nodding as he got up from his couch. "I'll pick her up this afternoon at four. Just let me suprise her though."

He hung up a moment later, smiling to himself. He hadn't seen his sister in a few months now, not since their father's birthday. She had looked absolutely gorgeous in those clothes and he had been trying to get her to stay at his place for some time. Now he might have pulled it off, she had been bored by staying at home, so he was offering her to come to his apartment in town. She could at least go out and look at shops here, maybe he'd even buy her something.

There was nothing to do at home but watch television, or read. Her computer had been moved from her bedroom to the living room after her mother watched a special news report about internet predators. So she rarely got online anymore, only when her parents were working or asleep. She just didn't like anyone looking over her shoulder.

Their mother kept her promise and didn't tell her that Christian was coming to pick her up. She'd made herself comfortable on the porch swing, reading a romance novel, not knowing that her mother was in her room packing her suitcase. Though still very warm, it was cooler than it had been in days. Instead of shorts and a halter top, Susan was wearing a yellow sundress. Her blond hair was swept up and pinned in place. Her mother didn't like her to wear makeup, but they came to a compromise, meaning her mother reluctantly let her wear lipstick.

But at their father's birthday party she wore more than just lipstick on her full plump lips. She'd worn a red dress that showed off her figure but without being too revealing. Her father said she looked lovely, her mother thought she looked too adult, and her older brother Christian.. well he just looked surprised, as if he'd never saw her before. When he arrives at four o'clock he would find her sound asleep on the front porch swing. One hand on top of the romance novel on her stomach, the other had draped above her head. "Hmmm?" she said hearing something that woke her up.

Christian arrived, his car pulling up on the sidewalk outside the house. He was wearing a pair of knee-length shorts and a white shirt as he got out, not bothering to lock the vehicle. He knew the neighbourhood well enough to know there weren't anyone who would dare steal it. He saw her sitting on the swing, sleeping and then suddenly reacting as he opened the gate in the fence. He went inside, his broad chest seeming to stretch the shirt a bit as looked up to the window that was into her room. He could see their mother finishing packing up her suitcase.

He went to the swing, kneeling down in front of her. "You shouldn't be sleeping out here, it's way too hot." He told her softly, one of his hands moving to her cheek. He had an instant flashback of the party, remembering her in that red dress and with full make-up. He made a secret promise to himself that night, he would find a way to be with her, and even if she was his sister, she was still beautiful.

He saw their mom at the front door. He stood up, heading up to her and kissing her on the cheek before giving her the usual ramble that he'd protect her and keep her safe, and keep an eye on her when they were out. He then took her suitcase, walking back to the swing. "Come sis, we're leaving." He told her softly, smiling as he held his hand down to her, offering it so they could get going.

It was the familiar voice of her older brother that had woken her. She opened her eyes as his fingers were softly stroking her cheek. She smiled up at him. "Christian! What are you doing here?" She moved her arms around his neck and gave him a hug. She found out what he was doing there when he stood and moved over to their mother who was holding her suitcase.

She sat up, and listened as her older brother promised their mother that he was going to take good care of her. It sank in then what Christian was doing there. When he came back to the swing, held out his hand to her and told her they were leaving, she didn't hesitate. Joann laid her hand in his and got to her feet. She was going stir crazy at home, and Christian lived in the city.

She walked beside him towards his car, glanced over her shoulder at their mother who was still standing in the doorway. Then looking back at him, asked, "Why didn't she tell me you were coming?"

Christian smiled to her, having hugged her back before he went to their mother. He felt her hand in his own as he made it back towards his car. He knew she was going towards the final bend just from having nothing to do so he was pleased to take her away for some time. He heard her question as he saw her looking back. He only laughed softly. "I told her not to tell you." He said softly. "I wanted to suprise you." He unlocked the car, putting her suitcase in there.

Heading around, they were soon on their way back to his apartment as an idea sprung into his head. "How do you feel about watching movies with me?" He asked her, looking over at her briefly. Damn, he couldn't believe he was this lucky to have a sister like her. If only they weren't family, he would hit on her and probably try to bring her home with him. He shock the thought out, not wanting to seem too creepy to her.

"It was a wonderful surprise," she told him, adding as he pulled away from the house, "My hero, come to rescue me from this boring place." Joann looked over at him and grinned. She was lucky to have an older brother like him. When he asked her how she would feel about watching movies with him, she quickly answered, "That depends, will there also be popcorn, and can I help pick them out?" They always got along well, enjoyed doing things together, but he'd never asked her to watch movies with him before. In fact, after he'd moved into the city she rarely saw him, or heard from him.

She always assumed that he was too busy, enjoying his freedom, dating. The last time she'd seen him was at their father's birthday party. He'd danced with her, and she instantly forgave him for abandoning her. Because that's what it had felt like when he moved to the city.

"So, how long am I staying with you?" With her luck it was just going to be for the weekend.

Christian laughed softly at her answer. He didn't mind it as he knew he wouldn't be focusing on the movie, he had a far more important idea in his head that he had to try out for the heck of it. "You can decide all about the movie if you want, I don't mind." He said, keeping his eyes on the road. It was true, he had never asked her if she wanted to watch movies. But that was because he had found movies rather silly, a waste of time when there could be done other stuff. Now he didn't mind, the time in the city had indeed changed him a lot.

Hearing her question, he snapped out of his focus as he looked at her quickly. "You'll be staying with me until the end of the summer break, or until you want to go home." He told her, smiling softly as he had to pull a lot of his charm on their mother just to get that part through. He wanted to spend time with her, and they hadn't seen each other for a long time. It had worked quite well for him actually.

Joann grinned at him, she hadn't looked forward to going back to her boring home, so she was very pleased to hear him say that she would be staying with him the entire summer break. She'd almost told him that having her stay so long would put a damper on his love life, but thought better of it. She didn't want him to have second thoughts, he might turn the car around and take her back home right now.

"Thank you, Christian. I was going crazy back there. Mom, won't even let me date. Can you imagine?"

Christian heard her words as he turned off the major road. He smiled at it as he made sure to look for the road his apartment building was on. "Guess once why I moved out in the first place." He replied with a laugh. "She's overprotective because you're the youngest and because you're a girl." He explained to her. "I didn't get off easy though, dad had to approve of every single girl I brought home if she was to return." He added with a soft sigh.

A moment later, he turned the car down his road. Now it was just a matter of minutes before they were at his apartment building.

She looked out the window and smiled, remembering, and now she knew why many of the girls he'd brought home never came back. "But you're free now. You have your own apartment, and can bring home any girl you want. You don't need anyone's permission anymore."

That wasn't quite true, he had to get permission from their mother before he could take Joann to his apartment, but she hadn't been talking about herself. She meant any girl that he was romantically interested in, of course she didn't include herself among them. She straightened when he turned off the major road and slowed down as if looking for something. Maybe the street he lived on? She'd never been to Christian's apartment before.

"You know, we'll probably end up doing the same thing to our kids," she told him. She knew their parents only wanted the best for them.

"Yea, I'm free." Christian laughed softly. "But the old man still taught me to be picky and not just bring any girl home." He added, admitting that he had learned something from their father. It might not seem possible, but it was true. The only girl he would ever have to ask permission about was indeed Joann, only because of their mother being overprotective. He saw his apartment building suddenly, turning into the parking lot and finding the spot that matched his license plate as he parked there. "I hope we won't be too hard on them." He told her as he stopped the car.

"Well, here we are." He added a moment after, opening the door before getting out. While she got out, he went to the trunk, opening it and getting her suitcase before locking the car. He then proceeded to go into the building, taking the two flights of stairs up to his floor. "Finally, home, sweet home." He said with a grin on his face as he unlocked the door to his apartment. "It's not much, but it's something." He told her as he stepped aside, having opened the door so she could enter first.

"I hope so too," she said as he parked the car. She got out, and looked up at the building while he got her suitcase from the trunk. After he locked the car, she followed him inside. She smiled to herself, glad that her brother was picky about the women he chooses to bring home. He should be picky, her brother deserves someone special.

Joann followed him up the two flights, she watched him unlock the door, and gave him a smile when he stood aside so she could enter first. It was something a gentleman would do, it was such a small thing to feel grateful for. She walked inside his apartment, bright blue eyes looking around. "It's very nice, Christian," she said, and she hadn't even been given the full tour yet.

Christian smiled at her words, entering after her. He didn't find it more than a place to sleep and eat as he didn't really seem bothered with that many decorations. "Depends on how tired you are." He laughed softly as he put her suitcase down by the couch. He wasn't bothered much by having her there with him as he moved ahead, going into the kitchen.

"It isn't big, but you're in the entrance, livingroom mixture. Out here is the kitchen, small but works." He told her, moving back to a closed door in the livingroom. "Small toilet, with a shower. There's hardly space for more than one person in there at any given time." He said with a soft chuckle as he then went to the last door. He moved inside, gesturing for her to come in with him. "This is the bedroom, I don't know if you want to sleep on the couch or in here with me." He told her, his bed being large enough for two persons.

Joann grinned, he definitely needed help decorating the place. But what she loved about it was it was, it was his own place. When it comes time for her to move out of their parents house, she wouldn't care what her apartment looked like, or how small or big it was. So long as it was affordable and not in a bad neighborhood.

The tour certainly didn't take very long. The last room she saw was the only bedroom. She stepped inside after he gestured to her. She looked at the bed, she didn't fancy the idea of sleeping on the couch, and she wouldn't feel right about kicking him out of his own bed.

"Looks like it's big enough for both of us," she said. He was her brother, she didn't have any qualms about sharing the bed with him, because all they would be doing in it is sleep. "You better not hog all the covers." Christian was a very handsome man, how many of her friends had she heard tell her that? But to her he was just her older brother. While she would agree he's very handsome, she didn't look at him the lustful way most of her friends did. She didn't know it now, but maybe someday she would..

"Depends on how much you pull." Christian laughed softly as he moved to sit down on the couch in the livingroom. He had a small TV and a DVD player, but that was about it as he looked up at her. "Wanna go get the movie now or should we enjoy each others company for a bit?" He asked her, wanting to let her know she could be at least partially in charge of what happened.

His neighbourhood wasn't like he had expected, but at least they didn't stir up any trouble. His only problems was whenever they threw a party because he could always hear the blasting of their loud and annoying music. He had his own music, but it wasn't as quiet as it had been back when he had lived with their parents.

He shot up, remembering the time. "Ohh yea, almost forgot." He said, rushing into the kitchen before coming back with a menu card from the local chinese. "What do you want from the take out? My treat." He told her, already knowing what he wanted exactly.

Joann sat down next to him on the couch, she turned slightly to face him. She hadn't seen him since their father's birthday party and as much as she loved watching movies, she wanted to know about everything new in his life.

"Let's talk first," she told him. "What are yo-"

She was about to ask him what his neighbors are like when he shot up and ran into the kitchen. Joann was standing when he came back with a menu from the local chinese restaurant. She grinned at him. This was great, they could talk while they ate take-out, then they could go pick out some movies.

She looked at the menu and pointed, "The number five," she told him. It was the mongolian beef, fried rice and egg rolls. "Which one are you going to order?"

Christian felt a bit bad for having interupted her question, but he had felt both hungry and noticed the time. If they ordered a bit earlier, they could avoid having to wait an hour for the food. He nodded at her order, quickly skimming through the list. "I'll have a seventeen." He said.

He had decided for an oyster sauce chicken with fried rice and eggs as he then put the menu on the small table by the couch. "Okay, lets walk there. It's not that far." He added, grabbing his old leather jacket from it's position on the wall, next to the door.

Joann followed him out, and waited patiently for Simon to lock the door before walking down the two flights of stairs with him. "It has been a long time since I had chinese food," she told him. He had one of their menu's so he must eat there all the time. She wasn't wearing a sweater or jacket over her sundress. Knowing their mother, there was probably one in her suitcase, but she was really hungry too and didn't feel like digging it out before they left.

"You must eat there all the time to have one of their take out menus."

"I don't mind chinese, it's good food." Christian replied, heading out and locking the door. He worked down the stairs quickly. The reason he had a menu was because he prefered chinese over pizza. Heading out with her, he noticed the change in weather to being colder and her still being in the sundress. He felt compelled to give her his jacket, but it didn't strike him as needed until they were halfways there.

"I don't eat there a lot, just when I feel like it." He told her by then, suddenly taking off his jacket. "You must be cold, here." He told her, putting his jacket around her shoulders. It might make her look like she belonged with him, but he didn't want her to be cold at all.

Joann nodded when he told her that he doesn't eat there often, by the time they were halfway there, she was rubbing her arms. She paused, when he suddenly took off his jacket. "Thanks," she said, smiling at him gratefully as he placed the jacket around her shoulders. There were a few others out walking, perhaps even heading towards the same chinese restaurant that saw them. No doubt, seeing him put his jacket around her shoulders did cause them to think that she was his girl, probably even more so when she moved closer to him, when she had to move past a guy who looked at her in a way that made her nervous.

Christian noticed the way the guy looked, shooting a glance back at him. He put his arm protectively around her waist, tugging her in a bit against him. He was protective of her, especially now that he was with her. But she would be allowed some liberty if she wanted it. Noticing the other people, he looked around nervously, being carful they didn't appear too much like wanting to assault them.

Arriving at the restaurant, he behaved like a gentleman. He opened the door, letting her inside first before entering. He let her keep his jacket, knowing she would probably want it on the walk back as he went to the counter and put up their orders before getting two glasses of soda, one for each. "Where do you want to sit while we wait?" He asked her gently.

Joann noticed how he looked back at the other man as he slipped his arm protectively around her waist and pulled her in against him. Christian made her feel so safe, but she didn't completely relax until he did.

Outside the restaurant he held open the door for her, she smiled at him before stepping inside. Her hands gripped his leather jacket around her shoulders as he went to the counter and gave their orders, then got their sodas. She couldn't help thinking that the woman that steals his heart is going to be very lucky. Her second thought was 'whoever she is she better not hurt him'.

"Where do you want to sit while we wait?" He asked her gently, and she shrugged, then replied, "Anywhere, as long as your sitting with me." She really missed him.

Christian grinned softly, as he moved to a free table for two and sat down there. He put one of the sodas by her, letting her sit down. He enjoyed her company, enjoyed having her around as she used to make him laugh with some silly small gestures.

Having noticed the gesture with his jacket, he felt pleased. She seemed to like it and it made him ponder if it was because of the fact it smelled of him. He knew it would be hard to find himself a girl, especially when he had his sister around now and she would put most of his female friends to shame with her beauty.

"So, has anything been different during the summer break? Apart from the usual ramble." He asked her, hoping to start some kind of conversation with him.

Joann shook her head, "Not really, Mom moved my computer out of my bedroom and into the living room after she watched a news special about internet predators. I can't get online without her occasionally looking over my shoulder now. At least she's not reading my email." She thought for a moment, before they left his apartment there was something that she wanted to ask him. She remembered. "What are your neighbors like? Do you have a steady girl?" She wrapped her lips around the straw and took a sip of her soda.

Christian heard her questions, shrugging a bit. "They're decent I guess. I only hear from them when I bump into them while getting my mail. Otherwise it's when they throw a loud party." He told her. The question about the girl seemed a bit off though, he shock his head, taking a sip on his soda. "I don't, they find out where I live and then they seem scared of my neighbours." He shrugged, like it wasn't a big deal that there were a bunch of crackheads living around the apartment complex he was in.
