Logic is panic's Prey...

It had been some time since their last date. Since Yusuke's return to the human world they had spent many a day and night together, but that time had been spent at one another's home, or the occasional motel. So when a picnic was brought up, Kurama was happy and eager to accept. He loved the former detective, and not just physically as their most recent activities might suggest. He was looking forward to simply talking for a time. Their bodies could intertwine later.

Kurama had initially planned on wearing the outfit he had on their first date, but after careful consideration, decided it would be uncomfortable and unwise to wear such a thing in the middle of a forest. Instead, he'd pulled out his old tournament clothing. The white shirt and pants were airy and loose, and the yellow gi over top was thin and light. It had a nostalgic feel in and of itself. The hem of it fluttered gently in the cool breeze that drifted over him as he climbed the stairs to Genkai's temple, his hands placed in his pockets. The fox made in about three quarters of the way up before the wind under his nose began to carry a very distinctive scent. Blood. It wasn't a particularly odd thing to come across here, as the forest was wrought with the laws of nature. It simply meant a predator had caught it's prey. What was odd, was the mingle of Yusuke's energy with the smell. He picked up the pace.

He diverged from the stairs to head toward their meeting spot; a lovely clearing surrounded by the sweetest smelling flowers, and trees choked by beautiful vines, but what he found was not what he was expecting. A blanket had been torn asunder and strewn across the grass, basket that was once filled with carefully made food was ripped open as if a wild beast had come looking for a snack and that food crushed into the soil as if trampled upon. "Yusuke?" He called out curiously, cautiously as he looked from side to side, both taking in the destruction and trying to pinpoint his lover's location. At least he could tell from the smell that it wasn't Yusuke's blood.

Across the clearing, in the shade of the trees, the high pitched scream of a rabbit started, but was abruptly stopped with a suckening crunch. Yusuke had heard his name, but he'd been very focused on the creature that had run from him, giving him the slip a few times as he reached out for it before now. A low chuckle filled his lungs as he stood up from behind the bush that had shielded him.

He'd had such an all consuming need to capture the fleeing beast.

He took the short side-step out through the bush needed to get closer to his boyfriend. A manic smile had touched his lips for the delicious satisfaction he'd received from catching the now third creature he'd gone after that had run from him in the last twenty minutes. The other two had been low level demons. They weren't around here, as he'd come across the rabbit on his way back to his picnic spread. We'll, most of them weren't there. A good deal of their blood had come along clinging to his body.

With that smile spread as an odd but cheery feeling rolled through him as he saw his lover. His head tilted as he tossed the rabbit aside and looked over the redhead with pinpricked pupils within slightly bloodied irises. "Hey Shuichi," he greeted cheerily. Though he didnt notice the heavy shake to his tune as he did so.

The wounded shriek caught his attention, and Kurama's sharp eyes locked onto the bush it came from. He expected to see a wolf or a human world fox dart from the leaves with a rabbit in its maw, but what came almost stumbling out caused a hot chill to rush over his spine. His breath caught in his throat and his posture straightened in an unseen jolt when his lover came into view. "Yus..." His words dried up on his tongue.

Yusuke was covered in blood that was clearly not his own. It was dripping from his fingers, and flung off of the tips when he tossed aside the rabbit carcass. Kurama felt his throat tighten at the cheery, warbled greeting. Yusuke's eyes were piercing into him, pupils tiny and focused. They may have even been shaking. This was not his Yusuke. This was... this was some feral beast. A rabid creature thirsting for something.

But Yusuke was in there, somewhere. He'd called his human name. Something that should have been relieving, but was instead concerning, because the former detective was a mazuko. A demon that feasted on human flesh. Kurama's left foot shifted back an inch before he caught himself. Don't run. His instincts told him to, but he knew better. He was standing before a predator that had just shed it's most recent prey. Don't run. If he did, it would only trigger a chase. One he couldn't win.

"Yusuke," he said again, this time with a forced calm that was betrayed by the scent of fear that no doubt exhumed from his body. "Tell me. What is going through your mind?"

Yusuke's attention shifted to Kurama's feet,a slight widening of his eyes as he saw the movment. The grin on his face stretched out a bit further as he studied the redhead for a moment after as he steadeied himself. When brown eyes met green however, that smile drew back to what it had been when he'd first seen him, his pupils even dilating slightly as Kurama spoke up. Through his response though, he was still far too manic to be in the right state of mind. He could taste the fear in the air.

It tasted good.

He took a step forward and faced the other teen, thrusting his blood soaked hands in front of him at waist level. "What do you mean?" It was laughed out exhuberantly. "I'm just happy to see you."

After saying as much the grin on his face grew once again as he lost focus on those eyes and went back to studying his body language. It was easier for him to read today, for some reason. "Aren't you happy to see me too, Shuichi?" He took another slow step forward, his head tilting slightly.

He tensed harshly as Yusuke's pupils gradually blew out. The crazed predator before him had caught the slight movement of his feet, the shift backwards and away that must have triggered a hungry need. He desperate tried not to, but the beast took a step forward, and the fox took a step back, keeping their distance. Kurama screamed at himself in his mind. Every movement of retreat was bound to egg Yusuke on in this moment, but his survival instinct was too strong for his body to ignore.

Another step forward, and Kurama took another step back.

His nostrils flared at the strong sent of blood being splattered across the devastated picnic scene that was supposed to be a lovely human getaway. The smell had it's own intoxicating effect of the fox, and under other circumstances Kurama may have gotten excited at it, but right now, it only fueled his fears. "Stop this, Yusuke," he commanded in a slightly shaky tone. "This isn't you."

He was very focused on Kurama's body, keen on the movements. One step back to his single step forward, and an excitement was growing in him beyond anything he'd ever felt for it. The words however, cause his smile to wane. A soft pout replaced it as he stood there a moment attempting to contemplate them.

But that wasn't fun, so after that moment of at least a good attempt, he smiled far too cheerily in his fox's direction, another step taken forward. "Of course it's me," he told him in a tone that was a bit less shaky than his greeting.

The cheery look was wiped away as he opened his eyes back up however, so sharply focused on his fox that he felt like he was trembling. "Hey Shuichi," he added with a growl in his voice. "Wanna play?"

With a manic cackle that only barely resembled a better tone for the voice it was in, he launched himself toward the fox sharply.

A hit of relief touched his features as Yusuke paused to think over his words. Perhaps he could reach his lover buried within the crazed animal. It was a hope that was cruelly dashed the moment Yusuke looked at him again. Those beautiful doe eyes were wide and wild, ferocious and hungry. "No, it's not," he tried weakly once more, his breath becoming ragged in his chest, making him force it steady through his throat.

The growl of his name forced a shake in his limbs, and his own eyes widened, green eyes quivering as he met that terrifying stare. words that had been used so playfully in the past were coming back to haunt him, and for a brief moment he wondered just what, exactly, Yusuke was hungering for. He opened his mouth to pose the question, only to leap back with a start as Yusuke lunged for him. He just barely managed to dodge to the side, and he vehemently told himself to stand his ground. To face the creature before him. To keep pressing and goad his lover free from this instinctual hold he was in.

He ran.

With his breath hot and his heart thudding so hard in his cheat he could feel his tongue pounding in his mouth, Kurama ran. His feet barely touched the ground as he bound his way through the forest, keeping to the thicker areas. The trees he passed lifted their roots in a desperate attempt to trip Yusuke up and buy their master some time. The irony was not lost on him, even in his fog of fear, he knew this was a bastardization of their usual games. An innocent chase down, Kurama tripping Yusuke as he fled with a jovial chuckle. Wanting to be captured. To be devoured. And that is what he now feared most.

If he was caught now it would not be a blissful bought of passion that met him. He would be devoured. Teeth would sink into his flesh, fingers gouging into his belly and organs. His blood and viscera would spray across the grass as the mazuko had its fill. And then Yusuke would awaken, and devastation wouldn't even come close to what the kindhearted teen would experience.

Kurama's breath came in ragged gasps. He was running, but where to? Where could he go? His mind was hazing, but his feet were already leading him to his answer. The gate to the Demon World that resided in Genkai's forest. He could make it there. He had to. His thoughts drifted to his youko form. In it, he may have a chance of subduing Yusuke... He couldn't risk it. Not yet. He had to lead Yusuke as deep into the world of demons as he possibly could before changing. In his demon form, he might make Yusuke lose interest, and that wasn't a chance he could take either. If Yusuke wasn't following him, then he might... He wouldn't allow himself to think along those lines any further.

He would lead Yusuke as far away from the human populous as he possibly could before fighting, because if he lost then... Then the least he could do for his crazed lover, was be sure that Shuichi was the only human Yusuke ate that day.

Kurama might not be feeling it, but Yusuke was giddy as Hell. The laugh he let off when his reach was dodged was nothing short of pleased. And them the fox took off. He paused himself for a moment to let off a jovial cackle before taking off himself. "I'm gonna get you Shuichiiii," he called shortly before catching sight of him again, his playful tune was calmer, but no less horrible considering how oddly it echoed through the trees.

Everything was sharper right now. He could see every twist in preparation of movement that ran through Kurama's form. He could taste the panic an desperation ha ging in the air in his wake. And he had no trouble at all noticing the vines that reared up toward him as he skipped over them nimbly and closed in on his prey.

Within moments of catching up, Yusuke took to the trees around them to avoid the lash of the plants on the ground. He was practically in flight as he danced his way up into a branch well in front of the redhead, and circled him in the trees, tightening the space between them with each pass.

"Run, run run, as fast as you caaan," he taunted mercilessly as he did so, only stopping in the trees for the moment it took him to land and kick off again. That is, until he landed on the branch directly above the teen and dropped his face down over it to be seen, swiping down as he passed to just barely run his fingertips through the very tip of the length of bright red hair. "No one can catch you here."

They both would know it was a lie now, and Yusuke so wanted to feel and taste his reaction to that too.

Yusuke's words echoed around him. It took no time at all for the mazuko to catch up and circle him like a shark in the water. The vines that coiled had been too slow, the roots arching too obvious, the branches reaching unable to grasp at anything. The forest, his safe haven, his hunting grounds, had become Yusuke's playground. Sweat dribbled down the back of his neck and clung to his cheeks, strands of hair sticking to the dampened areas. Each breath ached as panic blurred his vision.

Yusuke's sing song voice only deepened his sense of terror. The predator was toying with his prey.

But the predator made a mistake. Two, in fact. The first was stopping. A strangled gasp left his lips as Yusuke's face came into view, and the fox's feet scrambled across the forest floor to turn and dodge the hand reaching out to him. The second, was touching his hair. The light graze was enough to numb his lips and round his eyes, but Yusuke wasn't able, or chose not to grab a handful.

The branch Yusuke had paused on curled around the beast in a cruel squeeze, rapidly wrapping around his legs and torso; and the moment Yusuke's fingers touched his hair, a small seed shot free and tiny tendrils coiled around the digits. The little vines grew quickly, pointed tips digging into skin as if to take root in his blood stream, and they showed no mercy. For Yusuke, it would only take a burst of energy to to free himself, but if he took too long the plant would remove his arm in a bloody mess.

Kurama knew the distractions wouldn't last long, but they would give him a few precious seconds. Seconds he needed to reach the gate he was so close to. He felt his muscles burn as he forced himself to run faster than he was capable, the rampage of adrenaline making it possible.

There!

The gateway was in sight, and he forced himself through with a leap that lead him onto a decline. His feet skittered, and in his panic the graceful fox fumbled and fell, tumbling down the rest of the dusty hill. Pain radiated from his right ankle, but he ignored it, forcing himself back up onto his feet to try and run just a little further. He'd become the Youko and turn to fight when the gate was out of eyesight.

A surprised noise left his lips as he was captured up. It shouldn't have surprised him co sideline all of the dodging and weaving he'd just been doing, but his mind was on a single track while he simply reacted to everything else. This slowed him down for a moment, however. Frustration was what burst out next as he was captured up further and he shook his hand shortly as if that would rid himself of the vine. It didnt, of course, and that was when he noticed his fox speeding away.

It all gave way to pure rage as he yelled out angrily, his energy spiking so heavily around him that it utterly destroyed and disconnected the vine, and smashed the tree accosting him to pieces around him. "Come back!" The growled hollar wasn't nearly as hot on Kurama's trail, as it did take him a moment to process and react to the sudden change in his game.

He was not pleased, and it showed in form as he took to barreling after the fox just as he disappeared through the gate to to other world.

Kurama had just enough time to right himself and start his run again before Yusuke came leaping and prone through the gate himself. His landing was precise. He tackled the fox into a harsh roll right along with him, stopping them after a few turns with his feet sliding across the ground. He'd partially lost his grip in the scuffle of the roll and instead of stopping him from behind where he'd tackled, they were now facing each other.

He slammed his prey's back into the ground with a sharp snarl, grabbing him at the lower bicep and dove his head down and bit as hard as he could into the skin of the upper, obviously no longer playing by the harsh edge of his features as he did so. The bite was so hard his teeth hit bone, that really being the only thing that stopped him from biting clean through.

The air was knocked out of him when his pursuer barrelled into him from behind. His mouth opened in a scream that was strangled into a pitiful squeak. They rolled across the ground, dust kicking up around them, and Kurama scrabbled at the dirt in a desperate attempt to get away from the predator who'd just caught his prey.

Kurama found himself on his back, head bouncing off of stones and dirt, his eyes wide as he took in the sight of the feral beast that was once his lover. He kicked out with his left leg, digging his heel into the ground in a failed attempt to dislodge himself. Fear clouded his senses. He was going to die here...

A loud scream left his lips as teeth sunk deeply into his arm. He could feel sharp canines scraping and digging into bone. He heard his humerus cracking under the pressure and felt his blood spewing from the wound. It filled Yusuke's mouth and soaked into his clothing. He threw his head back, smacking it against the ground as he reflexively tried to pull his arm away from the pain, only to make it worse. Spittle left his mouth as it pulled back into a snarl of his own, and the word that left him wasn't terrified, it was furious. "YUSUKE!" Anger radiated through his frightened form, molding the name into an infuriated, almost disappointed scold. "Stop this NOW!"

The taste of blood filled his every sense, leaving him shivering in ecstasy as he felt the need to bite down even harder when his prey attempted to pull away from his grasp. The struggle unknitted the flesh further, and they both became soaked in the repricussion. A deeper, far more feral sound ripped it's way through his throat as he began floating on a high he wouldn't have been able to describe even if he did have the ability to process in that moment. He was losing his mind entirely now, and somewhere far away, the barely felt frightened feeling he'd been experiencing on some level he couldn't reach was finally being pushed to the side entirely. He had his prey fully ensnared, and he was once again trembling with the disgusting pleasure that was ringing through him over it.

The euphoric feeling came to a screeching halt however, as Shuichi's furious call of his name sliced into it like a hot knife through butter. The tone in the elder teen's voice as he reprimanded him angrily made him flinch harshly, loosening his jaw and pulling away rapidly like a struck dog.

His breath was beating through his lungs and bloodwas pounding through his veins heavily enough that he could actually feel the beats of his own heart for the first time in what felt like ages as he looked down at his wounded lover upon raising his head. Focus shocked him just as much as the scene beneath him, the feral look in his eyes calming considerably and the hue of his irises darkening back to their proper color as his face fell entirely from confused to utterly devistated. In an instant he was off the redhead and on his feet, taking several steps back. He opened his mouth and took the shakey breath he needed to respond, though he had no idea what words were about to fall from his blood stained lips.

He didn't get the chance. Just as he found his voice a shadow loomed over him and a fierce shriek was wailed into the air behind him. He barely had the time to whip his head around in surprise before the giant blue phoenix bore down on him from over head. Puu landed inches from Yusuke, making him flinch back, and not allowing any further reaction before raising its large wing and swiping the back of it with all its might across his form. The spirit beast was then just as quick to roost itself beside Kurama and cover him protectively with its wings while simultaniously erecting a barrier around the two of them, shrieking once more and glaring its own near feral glower towards the body it had sent flying across the clearing they'd all found themselves in.

The backhand itself knocked every bit of wind out of Yusuke's body. The subsequent landing that had him sliding so hard across the ground it left a long skidding divot in the ground had him absolutely reeling. Dizziness and nausea caught up to him instantly and it took him a long, long moment to even begin to recover from the rollercoaster he'd just experienced in what felt like the blink of an eye.

Kurama clenched his teeth and pinched his eyes shut to hold back another scream as teeth left his arm. Without the sharp bones holding it back, his blood gushed from the open wound, soaking his sleeve and leaving a muddy puddle on the ground. His stifled screech came out in an agonized "Guh!" and he slowly opened his eyes to Yusuke sitting above him, looking down on him with confusion and fear. And Yusuke's eyes were coming back. That puppy dog brown he adored was gradually clearing of the crimson that had over taken them. Kurama couldn't stop himself from smiling. "There you are," he puffed, reaching out his right arm in a need to touch the former detective's face, only for the younger teen to jump away from him.

With Yusuke off of him, Kurama held his wound closed with his right hand, his left arm dangling uselessly as he forced himself up into a sit. Yusuke was trying to speak, and he opened his mouth to start the conversation that might bring him back completely, but he wasn't given the chance. Puu came just a little too late to stop the damage done to his arm, but the giant phoenix slapped away it's creator before Yusuke could either come to or revert back into a hungry beast. "Puu!" His call was an odd mixture of relief and irritation. He was so close to getting his Yusuke to come through... Maybe.

He was quickly surrounded in large wings, and soaked in a protective barrier of the energy he adored so much. Kurama couldn't help but shift closer to his savior and rest against soft feathers to revel in the safety being provided. The loud screeching from the protective being pierced his ears, but it was an insignificant price to pay.

Kurama used Puu as stability to stand himself up. His right ankle throbbed, and he could feel it swelling. How pathetic he must look... "Yusuke!" He called out from behind his feathered cloak. "Yusuke please. Come back to me," he pleaded, gently pushing his way out from the cone of wings to be able to see his frazzled lover, but remained within the barrier. Just in case.

Puu turned its head back around to offer a careful, loving nuzzle to Kurama's cheek as it was leaned into with a soft coo of affection that was likely laden with as much worry as what had crossed Yusuke's face in the moment of clarity he'd had. There was a good deal of remorse mixed into the action as well. The large creature kept its wings in a loose hold surrounding Kurama as he moved forward, carefully tugging him back slightly bodily as he pushed past them, but lowered them enough that he could see past them.

It took far too long of a moment for Yuskem to catch up with everything that had just happened. He lie on the ground taking in sharp panicked breaths that were used in order to calm himself somehow. When he sat up, he couldn't point his face directly at the redhead, instead peeking from a hunkered position. Puu had lowered his wings just enough for the reeling teen to see his blood soaked lover and the grasp he had on his arm. Regret and worry hit him in the face like a ton of bricks. His whole body twitched for the force it took for him to be able to begin to reach out toward his boyfriend "Shu--" the unsure start of his name was cut off by the sharp screech of his spirit beast as it pulled its wings back further and pressed Kurama into its body far more possessively than it meant to.

It made him jump from the start it gave him, his eyes widening for a moment before the devistated look that had marred his features before returned full force and he jumped to his feet, turning and fleeing from the whole scene in a not-so-sudden panic he had little control over, a quiet curse bleeding past his lips as he took off.

Yusuke reached for him, and Kurama released his arm to do the same. His expression softened into relieved delight, but it was shattered by another shrill cry from the phoenix. He was pulled back into a feathered hold, making him slightly stumble as he was pushed against his lover's spirit beast protectively. "Puu, no!" he scolded, pushing away his wings and making several long strides after Yusuke's fleeing form, but there was no chance. He stopped short and placed his weight on his left foot, his right hand once more craddling his arm.

Kurama turned a hard look at Puu. One that softened quickly as he looked over that beautiful blue bird. He couldn't stay angry. The fox slowly limped his way back and reached out his bloody right hand to touch Puu's cheek gently, graciously. "Thank you Puu," he started before menuvering around the beast and carefully pulling himself up onto its back. "But we must go after him. I will not leave him alone out here like this. Please, lend me your wings again. I cannot follow him in my condition."
