Is Love Real?

Not trying to troll, also a good listen.

Now I shall go on a hardly solicited ramble of a genuine answer. Sorry if it wasn't what you signed up for, just read the next comment.

Love is real, though I would argue soulmates aren't real beyond the soulmates that are made when you make an oath before an altar. Sometimes it doesn't work out. People say the divorce statistic a lot, but the research behind it's more complex and frankly with some premarital counseling and filtering, the rate for success is a lot lot higher. Genuine knowledge of who you are making a commitment to (no secrets), shared identity and a true attempt to stick it out with each other with foreknowledge that there will be troubles.

I'd also emphasize that love is not just for romance. The greeks had many words for love in ancient tradition, though I remember three off the top of my head. Eros is the sort of intimate sensual love. Philos is the sort of familial love, that extends also to your friends, community, country. Agape is a sort of selfless, sacrificial love that ideally we should strive to hold in perfection for all people, but because we are flawed people it can only really be known in isolated actions, and we can try as hard as we might to foster a habit of selfless love for others.

I could ramble for a lot longer about it, but maybe I don't know very much. Hope it helped, if you were looking for an answer. If it was just a ramble on your part, well, woops, there's my actual thoughts.

Personally I'm skeptical about the existence of love since I've never experienced it myself, and have long since abandoned the expectation that I'll get to ever feel it. From the outside deeply intimate relationships seem almost like a narcotic addiction. Eventually you get conditioned to a person and their presence no longer has the impact it used to have. Or when you're suddenly shut off from your steady feed of dopamine you go into severe withdrawals and need time to recover. Sure, it gets you high, and it feels really great, but there's a whole lot of baggage associated with it, and in the end do you really need it?
