BACKGROUND:

The year was 2031, If anyone cared anymore. In 2025 and 2026 the world as it was known had ended. No one living knew what started it, few even cared. For weeks the bombs and missiles had destroyed city after city, natural resources were made unusable. Oil fire burned sending black clouds around the globe. Radioactive dust fell like snow over the planet. A third of the planets population died during the wars. Another third died as a result of the residue. Radiation, poisoned food and water, sickness. People banded together to try to survive, settlements grew and the ones that survived learned how to make things grow in the ashes of the aftermath. At least some had survived by trying to rebuild.

Others with less skills and more anger raided those peaceful settlements, enslaved or killed the people. It was the same all over the world. The strong had inherited the Earth. The meek served them as peasants and or as slaves. There were some though who could fight but did not raid the weak. They formed an organization to fight back and stop the Road gangs ravaging the land. These Road Warriors were few and they were not really organized. The word of them spread by word of mouth and many decided to become one of that number. People, mostly those who had escaped or survived a raid by the oultaw gangs armed and learned to fight. Needless death had not ended with the wars, it had just changed who lived and who died.

The war did not start all at once. The US had bombed Iran to destroy their nuclear bomb building capabilities. Israel had been fighting with Lebanon, Palestine, and Syria for months. Iran was supporting the fight against Israel. Russia and the Ukraine had been at war for years by than. NATO was in full support of the Ukraine. Russia had friends though as well. North Korea and China were strong allies. Both of those countries had plans to expand their territory as well. China felt Taiwan belonged to them. North Korea wanted to add South Korea and become one nation again. Even the US was not above greed, the President threatening to annex Canada, the Sues Canal, and seize Greenland. The world had no idea where to turn to find sensible leaders!

Now the story here is about Ryder MacCloud a 6'2" 200pound, athletic, quick, and strong young man. He had studied martial arts through school and college, and had participated in a few tournaments while in the Marines. Before going to college in an ROTC program he had gone to Marine basic training. He had left upon graduation from high school before starting college. Each summer while in college he had been on active duty training. He had taken a sniper/scout AIT the one summer. A parachute training another summer. In college he took four scuba diving classes, one as a PE course and the other three were science. His degree was in aeronautical engineering. The next three years he took pilot training and his first assignment had been in an f-18E on the Rosevelt as part of VMF-119 the Gunslingers.

So in July 2025 Ryder MacCloud was a marine fighter pilot on CVN-71 the Rosevelt. They would be in the open sea between Okinawa and Japan for much of their cruise. Carrier take-offs and landings, navigation training over open seas. Many like Ryder were not long out of flight school but had made the grade to join active Units. That had made the decision to train these Squadrons to full readiness a priority. With all the trouble in the middle East it was felt the Marine Squadrons readiness was important so they could relieve naval air groups if needed. Since several Carrier TGs were in the middle East this was also a key area to protect Taiwan, So the Rosevelt was also placed in a strategic position.

Near the end of August The Chinese had all three of their carrier Task groups in open waters. The Liaoning was South/East of the Rosevelt. The Shandong was North/East, and the Fujian TG was South/West. That was where the war started for Ryder. The trade wars and other factors had pushed China into making their play for Taiwan. They had opened the hostilities when four J-15 Flying Dragon fighters from the Shandong had fired on four Marine F-18E, One of which was 2ndLT Ryder MacCloud. All four J-15's had been shot down none of the marines had been seriously damaged. The next five days were intense fighting that pulled in Japan and Australia and the USS Bush a newer Carrier and their Task Group from the South. China took an aerial beating. Their three Carriers and escorts all sunk, their time as a naval super power ended as their fighters and weapons had not proven as deadly as expected. Their missile offensive capabilities had been seriously depleted as well as their air power. The coastal invasion bases decimated, ending the threat of invasion to Taiwan for a few years at least.

A general in the AirForce had diverted a lone B-2 bomber to North Korea to bomb a nuclear facility and the Capital. The rift that geologist had warned would open if North Korea continued testing their nuclear warheads did indeed split open, most oft he Leadership was killed as well causing a civil disaster in the country. The situation made Chernobyl look like a walk in the park. The willingness of the USA to expand warfare scared the Russians and they responded with expanding their war efforts into Finland, Poland, Several African nations to secure needed raw materials. NATO in Europe responded with air and troops to support those invaded countries. The war between India and Pakistan erupted in fierce air battles and an Invasion by India into Pakistan. It was like the entire world had gone insane at the same time.

A nuclear device exploded in NewYork city. and the US launched a nuclear strike at Iran. Russia Launched a counter strike feeling they were being targeted. Several nations launched cyber attacks to disrupt power grids and civil communications, misinformation flooded the internet. Nuclear power plants began melting down if not already struck by war efforts. The word was reduced to anarchy, all four Horsemen were awakened and people died in the millions.

For Ryder that period of time he was still on the Rosevelt The ship had weathered the war and the first storms created by the nuclear fall out. They sailed North When they were in range of the North American continent They launched all their aircraft remaining for Alaska, the ship was dying, the captain was rescuing any resources he could. Ryder was one of those pilots that flew off the carrier. A storm knocked out most of the electronics in nearly all of the planes before they reached land. Ryder landed on a highway somewhere in Canada. Taken in by an Indian tribe he lived among them through the fallout years that followed. He learned to ride how to catch, break-in, and train horses. His marksmanship aided the tribe as well with his hunting skills. His military skills also helped defend the tribe from marauders. Four years later the storms had calmed down, the planet without so many humans was recovering from the man made catastrophe. Ryder decided to go find out if any of his family in western Maryland had survived. He had a horse he had trained for war, and two pack horses. He left in the spring of 2030. He had to squirt around dead zones that were still radioactive, and larger militant groups that now ruled several cities. He fought when he had to and collected supplies when he could.

Now it was June 2031 and he was in what used to be Maryland, near where Thurmont used to be. Now Ryder had survived mostly unchanged despite the hardships he had faced. Ryder was and had always been a non drinker, honest, loyal, trustworthy, a real boyscout type. In fact he had reached the Eagle scout level before graduating high school. He had hated bullys and most of the trouble he got into in school had been due to protecting someone from bullys. Now the times were more primal, small bands fought for survival. Several gangs formed to take from those who were skilled and smart enough to make what was needed. Ryder had taken on the task of defending those who didn't want to hurt anyone, they just wanted to make the world livable again.
----------------------------------
Now:

Ryder heard the roar of the dirt bikes and screams of the couple being chased. He road to just below the crest of a hill to see what was going on. He saw a typical scene these days. Two women running from four raiders on dirt bikes. He lifted his M-14 from the scabbard on his saddle. His horse was trained to deal with the noise of a gunshot so he didn't dismount. He adjusted the scope and aimed. He took the biker nearest the women even though that alerted the other three. It was his intention to draw the Raiders toward him anyway. They stopped and saw him one fired off a burst from his auto-pistol, likely a newly made MAC-10 type weapon. They were inaccurate but they could still be made if usable metal was available. Ryder shot him next. The other two raced up the hill toward Ryder. He shot both before they were within thirty yards of him. With the raiders dead he rode down to find the two women. They had taken shelter near a thicket to catch their breath. From them he learned they had been part of a group out gathering berrys and roots for a nearby settlement. The Raiders had jumped them at least four cars, they had been far enough away to run for home but had been turned away by the bikers. They had been running for a long while. Ryder asked if they could ride the dirt bikes. One woman nodded. "Take their weapons and anything you feel is usable take a bike and return home to warn your settlement."

Ryder back tracked the women and the bikes to where the raiders were still gathering the collected slaves. There were four cars, each had a weapon mounted on a ring on the roof. Two were m-60 machine guns likely from some reserve armoury. One was an old air cooled .30 caliber machine gun from like WWII. Likely a relic from someone's collection. The fourth vehicle had a linked pair of m249 SAW light machine guns, a more modern weapon but also likely from a reserve unit. The weapons were manned as about sixteen or so other Raiders herded the captured and were locking them in a double line, over twenty people, another dozen or so bodies littered the area. Ryder rode his horse over a hill to leave him out of harms way. He left his remaining pack horse there as well. He moved back to just below the hills crest and took a decent covered position. He adjusted his scope and shot one of the M60 gunners low in the chest. He rolled below his cover and cursed, if her had aimed for the head he might have missed. As the machine gunners sprayed the area in response he readjusted his scope. He shot the gunner of the old .30 caliber next as he was looking in Ryder's general direction. He hit him high in the chest and smiled. His next three shots all struck true as he picked off the other two gunners and some guy who looked like he was giving orders.

He was spotted though and men jumped into vehicles and drove in his direction using the two cars with the M60 machine guns. They laid down a torrent of cover fire as they came up the hill. Ryder knew he had made a mistake, staying in one spot too long might well have just gotten him killed. So close to home the fact stung. He was a trained sniper and evasion was part of that training. He used a crawl space to move but it would just buy him a little time. He could not outshoot so many and he was never going to outrun the SUV type cars.

As some of the captives scattered Samantha heard the gunfire and watched as bandit after bandit fell. She knew a good chance when she saw one and bolted for one of the fallen bandits to snatch his weapon. I rack the bolt on a mud covered AR and blast a few distracted bandits as they fire at a distant marksman. Samantha checked the magazine on the rifle, only a handful of bullets left. She knew her strength was in driving, not shooting. Two trucks with machine guns mounted on the roofs roared as they pursued the hidden marksman.

Samantha knew the marksman didn't stand a chance against two trucks with machine guns. She ran for the bandit car with a 30.calibre machine gun on it and connected the hotwire on the dash to start the car. She hit accelerator and roared towards the pursuing vehicles. Once she saw them shooting at the hillside where the marksman was she parked the car and crawled into the backseat to get into the turret ring of the machine gun.

As the bandits were firing she opened fire in turn. Mowing down the gunners and drivers in a few long bursts of heavy fire. By the time the 30.calibre machine gun was empty she'd cut down the pursuers.

Stepping out of the turret ring Samantha climbed out of the car and walked toward the fallen bandits to start scavenging, bandits tend to have good loot. She picked up Mini ruger, it was a cheap rifle but one that had ammo available. She took the rifle's sling and hung it off her shoulder.

She searched the bandits until she found what she was looking for, a car key, strangely pristine. It was to a car that bandits had taken along with her. The captives went to the slave market, the car went to the chop shop.

"Fuck," gasped Samantha as she looked around, curious if the marksman that saved her was going to take her out as well.

"Hey!" she shouted towards the hill, "you friendly?" she asked while waving.

Ryder realized someone had helped him? The machine guns stopped and the cars sort of crashed slowly into trees or rocks. When he came out of hiding he saw a women with a rifle and aimed at her. As she waved he realized she was not one of the raiders her clothes were like those of those taken away. He lifted his rifle when she called out. "Yes I am friendly, Can't be too cautious these days though. So are you the one who saved my ass?" He walked down toward her, he saw how cute she was with that red pixie cut hair style. He was not above noticing a pretty woman. He would be polite but he enjoyed the view. Name is Ryder. I used to live in this region before all hell broke loose. Just now getting back here, has been a long trip." He was standing close to her, not yet within arms reach. He still feared a knife to the gut as he had gear worth stealing. He offered her his hand to shake. He was ambidextrous but still left hand dominant, so his rifle pointed to the sky was in his left hand.

"I met a couple of women from a nearby settlement just a while ago. I sent them to warn the people there and came on here to see if I could help you folks. Seems you saved my ass though so I am grateful. So those people taken, friends of yours? Do you know where they might have taken them?" He smiled, and shrugged "I know a lot of questions. I am willing to help if I can, rescue your people or escort you back to your settlement. Ryder was under the assumption she was one of the settlers gathering food.

There were the three SUV's still here. The one she had driven and the two she had shot up. As Ryder took in the sight "We should scavenge what we can, is that vehicle still operational?" He pointed to the car she had driven.

Samantha looked at Ryder as he stepped down the hill and she lowered her rifle. "The car rode pretty good, as for them?" I ask as I motion to the wastelanders running from the bandit camp. "just had the bad luck of being out scavenging when Hellmouth's men showed up." I let the rifle hang from its sling and pat the bandits for loose goods.

I chuckle to myself as I do so, "fuck, you know I used to be a game designer?" I say as I take a lighter from a dead bandit's pocket.

I clear my throat as I examine you, it's clear you didn't spend you life idle. I allow myself to admire your physique briefly before standing up. "Name's Samantha by the way." I say as I offer my hand. "And if you're up for it a few more captives got taken to the chop shop. My ride got taken there as well. If we clear the chop shop I can get my ride back and do a good deed at the same time. I'll owe you a beer. There's a settlement I know of with a functioning brewery."

I pause for a moment, "that is if we don't get killed rescuing wastelanders but what the hell, can't let the asshole's win right?"

"Hellmouth you say, so he is the local Raider leader. Really, a game designer? Well you handled that machine gun like a trained trooper. I guess things change and you moved on to learn new skills." She was checking him out and that made him smile, she was easy on the eyes and if she liked him things might well develop into some fun. "Glad to meet you Samantha, do you go by that or do folks call you Sam?" Her hands were warm and he felt his cock lurch in his pants when they touched. He thought he had to behave himself as he listened to her speak of her own ride. She offered him a beer and he smiled, "we survive and I will have a drink with you, sound sonly fair to me."

Ryder waved at the vehicles, we should take the weapons and whatever gas is in the tanks before we head out. I have a couple of horses beyond the ridge, why don't you get started while I collect them. I will be right back," He started to walk away and looked back "Maybe you can think of some ideas to get your vehicle back and those captives that ensures we can spend sometime together after the deed." He waved as he walked on, cresting the hill and disappearing beyond.

A few minutes later he rode a blue/black roan over the hill leading a dusty tan pack horse behind him. He dismounted when he reached her. "Say have you eaten? I have some MRE's I found a short time ago. I am fine sharing with you, least I can do seeing you saved my life and all."

Samantha felt her stomach, "shit it's been a day since I ate, hadn't thought about it with everything going on." As she spoke she put the weapons in a pile along with turning a bandit's shirt into a bag for magazines and stray bullets. "Okay, we've got an AR, a mac 10, and a...is that a Five seven? Fancy fucker." She says as she instinctively pockets the pistol.

"Other than that we've got some loose ammo." she says as she puts the t shirt bag on the hood of a car.

Samantha looks at Ryder's M14, "impressive kit," she says as she lays out the weapons on the hood along with some slings and holsters found on the bodies.

Samantha opened the car door and looked inside, sure enough there was a map with camp locations scrawled on it. "The chop shop is here." I say as I point to a scrawled x on the map. "I've scouted it a few times but never thought of going in. But two people? If we get the drop on the guards we could take them out... assuming they don't know we're coming... thoughts?"

I was lucky, I brought the rifle and pistol with me when I left the Rosevelt. My crossbow I collected in Canada when I was living there. It comes in handy when I need to be quiet. As he answered he checked the loose ammo for 7.62 and 9mm for his rifle and pistol. If they looked good he would keep them, most ammo was reloads nowadays and you had to be careful when selecting bullets. Those reloaded too many times might explode and ruin your weapon, maybe even ruin your day. Since you know where the place is and where the sentries are, I think we can get in there okay. It is normally getting back out that proves a problem. I got nothing better to do lets go get back your ride."

Ryder looked a the Vehicle she had driven, this one is still drivable? Or do we cache everything in it and you ride with me on Tempest here?" As he spoke he went to the other nearer car to recover the M60, it had a few rounds left and two extra barrels. It would be a good addition for the settlement. The other car had only the one good barrel left, the one in use had been bent when the car hit the tree. He collected a extra box of 200 hundred belted rounds. That was a real fine, ammo was harder to come by than weapons now. He put both machine guns in the car with some of the other loot. Looking at the map and judging the distance, "we won't get there till after dark I think. Want to just stop and eat somewhere between here and there?"

Samantha feels her stomach, it's growling near constantly, the only thing she'd eaten was bone marrow off roadkill deer. "I'd rather attack in the early morning anyways." she says as she puts the gun in the back of the vehicle. "We could ambush them, show up in their car and come out shooting?"

She took another look at Ryder on his horse, he was like a pinup poster for a post apocalyptic themed calendar. "There's an abandoned suburb an hour from here, we can get a fire burning and cook something without giving our position away."

Samantha couldn't think of a better night than sharing an MRE with a handsome stranger in an abandoned house. "So you take your horse, I'll take the ride? It'll give us options when we attack."

"Sounds like a plan. I will follow you, just keep in mind the horse can't maintain much more than five miles an hour for any length of time. You leave me a trail though and I will find you if you get too far ahead." Ryder was used to riding slow and being cautious. Alertness in his view was what kept him alive and intact. He would follow Sam as best he could and locate her at the house she had picked out. He brought the horses inside and put them in another room. As he walked past Sam he tossed her a few of the MRE bags. "just add water and heat them up. They are rather tasty and enough calories in one bag for nearly two days. Eat two of them a day and you get fat!" He laughed as he walked on past, in that other room he fed the Horses honeyed grain and brushed them down. He walked back to where Sam was and sat down "Is there any drinkable water around here? I would like to wash up before we eat if possible?"

Ryder had been careful about water especially, much of it was contaminated still. he had not been one to worry about his health much before the war. After reaching the mainland though he had seen what toxins did to people. The evidence as he crossed the from West to East had only made him more aware of the dangers. He was 32 and planned on living to a nice old age if possible. He had drank honeyed mead many times, the alcohol helped with many natural toxins. The Europeans had learned that back long ago. Sitting beside Sam he glanced over "so you were a game designer. Did you go to college or did you just learn the skills on the fly." He had met a few hacker types who had been basically self taught just because they were interested in the skills.

Samantha held the MRE in her hands and looked back at the car. "I'll see if the bandits packed some water for their patrol. She says as she stands up and heads for the semi dilapidated garage of the house. Inside she opens the trunk of the car and there are an assortment of chemicals and rations. She takes two jugs of water out of the back and closes the trunk before returning.

"I figured correctly." she said as she searched through the kitchen for any metal cookware. Returning with a pasta pot. "We get a fire burning and boil some water, we can get the rations cooked that way, right?" she asks. Having only done research about MRE's when she interviewed a veteran infantryman for a game she'd been working on before the bombs dropped.

"And as for game design? I was self taught, started as minecraft mods but it grew until I was designing my own games in java..." she looks around at the abandoned house. "I was making my own post apocalyptic game if you can believe it... it all seemed so impossible back then."

Samantha burned some tax documents she found in the house's office to get a fire started and broke down an end table to make firewood. She set up the fire in the basement and cracked open the basement window to let the smoke out.

"Thanks again for sticking you neck out to save us, you didn't have to, but you did. Shit like that means a lot these days. Not a lot of good men left."

She finds herself cuddling up next to you as they wait for the water to boil, the excitement of survival taking its toll on her.
