Question Using threadmarks in PMs

I don't quite fully understand how to properly use threadmarks and all, but I was told by someone very helpful that it would be a good option to build an index, as a alternative to being able search through PMs.

In PMs, when I create one... what does this mean - I can't tell difference between what happens when I tick the box vs do not tick it.

Backdate threadmark creation and assign ownership to the OP.

I did a search for 'backdate' - not much came up...

So when you create a threadmark of a message in PM's it's basically a sticky note so you can easily find that message again in the future. In a PM conversation that has threadmarks, you should be able to see a small dropdown box in the upper right that says "Threadmarks". It's to the left of the Conversation Info.

When you select that Threadmarks drop down it should reveal every threadmark in the current conversation and allow you to click on to jump directly to it. So, for example, if you made a character sheet of sorts and threadmarked it then you could jump to that threadmark to go back and reference that message at any point.

I'll be frank, it can be very useful but functionality is also limited as I'm fairly certain only the person who created the conversation can make threadmarks in it. I've not found much benefit for it personally, though I'm sure other people like it much more.

EDIT - I somehow missed that your question was specifically for the checkbox and not for general use of threadmarks, my apologies.

okay, so i had to look this up and test it, but it seems like IF you check that off, it will add the threadmark to your reader mode list in chronological order as to when that post was posted and not when the threadmark was added.

if you do NOT check it off, your threadmark will add itself to the bottom of the list (when you open it in reader mode), regardless of when the post was originally posted.

so, example:
post 1
post 2
post 3
post 4
post 5

let's say you threadmark post 5 first, because this is newest.

reader mode:
post 5

if you go back to threadmark post 2, and you check off that box - the post will appear BEFORE post 5 in reader mode (when you only see the threadmarks), because it backlogs when the post was created.

reader mode:
post 2
post 5

if you do NOT check it off, post 2 will appear AFTER post 5 in reader mode, so as the 'newest' added threadmark.

reader mode:
post 5
post 2

i hope this helps! so i guess it all boils down to whether you want the threadmarks to appear in chronological order as to when it was posted or if you want to add them based on content/relevancy. so you can play around with the setting, checking it off when you don't want it to appear as new, and don't check it off if you'd rather have it as the latest threadmark, despite it being an old post.
