Intrested to see what people prefer.

I guess for me it really depends on the type of roleplay and setting. I personally don't like anime images for my characters because I just can't picture them anime style. I usually will do realistic art from places like Pinterest or google or real life face claims though I draw the line at using a photo of someone I know that has passed on.
 
I'm with Citadelle... I general like to use realistic but the unknowns. If a person asks for a "famous/celeb", it's a possibility, but I don't generally enjoy using those. I'm not much into anime, (sorry l, please don't come at me), so realistic or descriptions for me. :)
 
i have to agree with citadelle ~ it really depends on the story and setting. i can't really picture drawn artwork for anything modern, but i struggle to picture real life fc for some of my fantasy settings. and then it sometimes depends on the character ~ some characters just aren't 'real', while others can't be drawn. ​

i will admit i prefer real life face claims (actors/actresses), because i can envision them taking on the role as my character and therefore it doesn't feel so 'personal'. i don't like using influencers as fc because they '"play themselves" and that doesn't really feel right to me, heh. ​
 
I'm most comfortable with anime or art for face claims. I'm someone who sometimes has a hard time picturing faces in my head, but at the same time, using pictures of real people makes me uncomfortable for some reason. Oddly enough, I don't have this inherent aversion to realistic face claims made with AI.
 
I definitely lean towards real fave claims. I always find it easier to get into a character in the stort when real pictures are used. I've never really been able to get into drawn or Anime
 
I lean to whatever works for an idea; personally I actually find real life face claims to be difficult to work with, or even mildly uncanny just because it feels strangely off for me to use real people. Everyone has their tastes, so just figure out yours and and let people know up front what you like.
 
I err towards anime style imagery heavily but drawn is OK too on the context. Of course, a lot of it is contextual too. I'm just not super duper keen on RL faceclaims.
 
It's personal preference, as you can see by the different flavored responses. For you? Just put what you prefer in your request thread. Ask potential partners if they're on the same page, but most importantly, be comfortable with the characters you're making.

Drawn, preferably anime, manga, manhwa etc. Styled one, since I suck all my inspirations to my RPs from animanga/adjacent mediums and prefer the style. I've never really vibed with real life faceclaims, or realistic drawings, realistic 3D renders etc. AI refs are also a no-go, but if my potential partner manages to fool me (or even themselves) with one then shame on me I guess.
 
I have no issues with AI. But I do have with real faceclaims. Sure, these people posted their photos and everyone knows the silent agreement that once you post something, you let people do what they want with it. But...I don't feel comfortable using the likeness of someone for any type if story, much less one that will more often than not have erotic bits. I mean. To think someone out there is using my likeness for an omegaverse rp (for example) is enough to make me feel anxious lol. AI? Not a problem, that person doesn't exist. That said, yes, I prefer drawn and anime style. Especially due to the type of rps I do.
 
That’s a no from me for real life flaceclaims, but as for the other two…

I prefer either real life face claims or descriptions. I always do modern, realistic roleplays so when I'm roleplaying, I tend to picture what is going on in my head. I have a hard time doing that when the setting is modern and realistic but the face claims are anime.
 
Photos or realistic-AI images for me, if images are needed. Otherwise descriptions are perfectly fine (even preferred).
Drawn can sometimes work if its drawn realistic-like.
Otherwise...no.
And I really can't at anime.
 
The definitions are hard for me. But long story short, anything but a photograph.

Some digital art is "realistic" but the girl has pink eyes, and blue hair, and generally perfect features - that's basically anime to me. So I play around in that middle area.

If I see another picture of Theo James, I'm going to lose it.
 
Drawn/anime and descriptions. It feels wrong to use a picture of a real person (living or dead) as a faceclaim because imagine having your face and your pictures being used for whatever fantasies someone on the internet has. That's why I never take selfies. I don't want some pervert to jerk off to my pictures or use them for a smut roleplay. Also, using a dead person is just fucked up. What if the person's family never gave you permission to use their loved one's face for whatever fantasies you have?

I agree with the realistic faceclaims part. The AI part? Not so much. I'm heavily against the use of AI because most AI just looks like slop. We could be using it for research, but most of us would rather use it to pump out soulless, manufactured slop that steals from actual artists, and it could get to the point where we can't distinguish AI from real art anymore. Why are we so willing to sacrifice the work of human minds and human hands for manufactured slop that can be spammed all over the internet, making it hard for roleplayers to find good faceclaims?
 
I think AI is the least problematic. Other images have at least the potential for being 'stolen' from models and/or artists who don't approve. In fairness, some uses surely should have been expected - like a porn star objecting to sexual objectification would be a little odd.

That being said, I'm not a stickler against anybody's face-claim, regardless of source. Other than underage, of course.
 
Definitely real life... I typically only write as canon characters from fandoms so they already have their faceclaim right there!
 
I don't typically use already established characters for my roleplays, and I'm relatively particular in my character design - some of which can be rather out there - so drawings, if used, are often just there to supplement the real description.
 
Here's a real unpopular opinion: face claims and image references are often a crutch used to mitigate a lack of creativity and descriptive writing ability. Forum based role playing is, at its core, a text-based activity where the theater of the mind serves as the stage where the action takes place. A character begins as a mental image the writer conjures from the ether of their imagination. In my experience it's damn near impossible to find art, or photographs, that match the characters in my head, so I don't go around collecting images. I'm a very detailed writer, and I have confidence in my ability to create living characters that can inhabit the reader's imagination. After all, most books lack face claims and reference images. Readers are expected to put their big boy pants on and put their minds to work to take what the author provides and create their own mental pictures. It's far more mentally engaging that way. Creating a character by finding art or face claims first seems backwards to me. Of course, there is no wrong way to role play, and the important thing is to have fun, so my opinions are worth as much as a fart in the wind.
