What do you overdo in your RP writing?

Thought it might be interesting to read what others are self-aware of in their own story writing.
  • Do you use way too many commas? Not enough?
  • Too many question marks? Not enough?
  • Is YC's dialogue with the other OCs often a list of endless questions - leaving your partner the weird task of answering them like a survey instead of like a conversation?
  • Do you overuse certain analogies, phrases or idioms?
  • What colorful adjectives do you keep using over and over?
Share some examples if you're willing and able to!

It's possible that's way others like ya. I enjoy the forced worldbuilding and "what's next" questions that are posed.

I use em dashes a lot— in both my RP and regular writing.

It's come to my attention that this is something that people say AI also does, and it's one of the giveaways of it, or something. Weird, but I'm not going to change my entire writing style to work around that.

Same here! Ahh it’s so frustrating cause I’m obsessed with using dashes all the time— like all the time.

I refuse to touch any AI stuff so people will just have to take my word for it >.>

Yes! I kept seeing people post on Reddit like "oh a dead giveaway of AI is —s!"

And I was just like: WHAT? SINCE WHEN? 🤷🏼‍♂️

Fr I hate it. I’ve been around a lot longer than AI so it can fuck right off with that, not changing my entire writing style for this fad they want to shove down everyone’s throat >.>

Imo there are other things that flag AI writing to me than just punctuation. If someone's accusing me of using AI for my posts then either they don't really know what AI writing is like beyond em dashes, or i have way bigger problems than punctuation 😂

World building, expensive words, a lot of detail beyond the point of being helpful. But then I love it. I love it though, and I'm grateful to my partners for putting up with me. :) I owe you one!
I can appreciate anyone who puts details in their posts. I love reading them.

EXACTLY. Like... No, I was here first. I'm not going to get bullied into changing my whole style because that's what computers do, lmao.

And apparently there are websites where one can plug writing in and see if it's AI generated now, which I've seen people in the RP community talk about using? And something is very funny to me about this, because at that point you're trusting one AI to tell you whether or not a different AI was involved.

In this club too. I use em dashes so much and I'm trying to cut down on it.

Harper regularly telling me my sentences have crossed the 40 word mark. They're not run-ons, I just have a bad habit of abusing semicolons, commas, and yes— the dreaded em dash. I love a good parenthetical statement slipped in no matter how I choose to structure it grammatically.

For certain RPs/characters I do sometimes get mentally 'stuck' on certain details. I have one character in play right now where I noticed I keep focusing on their eyes and need to remind myself to branch out into other body language. I also sometimes commit to a thematic bit too hard and run the risk of similar descriptions because I keep returning to the theme.

My trick is that I've never learnt to use em dashes correctly -- most sources don't put spaces around them --, and I always just write double hyphens even if they're not automatically turnt into the proper em dash character. Take that, robots.

I don't know if it's a habit I've developed recently or it's just something I've grown more aware of, but I've caught myself writing sentences where I just drone on and on in between dashes, colons, semicolons . . . The worst thing is that, when I pause and try to rewrite everything in smaller pieces, I find that that 200-word sentence from before was actually better.

Oh yeah, all of this I am guilty of... Except for the double dashes. I write most of the time on my phone, and on my keyboard there's a shortcut to just hold down the - key and it can become an em-dash (or some mysterious, even longer dash). Cool!

Ellipsis...

I don't even know why I love that so much, nor I can't remember when all of this started. Fact is, unless I'm writing a work related majl, I use those suspension mark. A lot.

Me too. Adds impact and tone, but I often feel I do it an unnecessary amount at times.
