The Hollow Veil is a story-driven, character-focused Gothic fantasy adventure set in a wind swept and isolated corner of a Renaissance-inspired world. This is a place where the light of the Church flickers weakly against an older darkness—where faith may protect, but not always save.

The Premise
In the forgotten marches of the Calcrates, an urgent letter has arrived from a member of a reclusive order of militaristic nuns known as The Covenant of the Crimson Veil — a message, desperate in its tones, from an acquaintance from far more youthful days. It speaks of strange warmth beneath the sacred waters of The Oasis of Saint Casilda, of restless dreams that leave the flesh to fever, and of something buried that was thought to be all but forgotten but is now stirring.
Characters will either be part of a seasoned trio of adventurers: the Rykoff siblings, professional hunters of the natural and the unnatural, and Alice Erindark, a sharp-tongued negotiator with a talent for surviving dangerous conversations - Bound by a measure of shared history, duty, or the simple promise of pay - you ride into the hollow lands where saints of old no longer answer, silence is a lasting warning, and the sensation of sin lingers in the shadows.
An oasis steams with tantalizing warmth at midnight.
A convent of nuns has sealed its doors.
An old shrine to a long-lost faith lies in ruin.
A nun from the sisterhood of The Crimson Veil has vanished.
An order of knights and inquisitors are preying on heretics.
And all the while something watches.
And waits.
Setting & World
This is not a world of high fantasy or flamboyant magic. It is a world of crumbling churches, gun powder, whispered exorcisms, and relics that burn the hands of the unworthy. The sun is distant, the winds speak in tongues, and faith is an amor that can be worn—and just as easily pierced.
The region is sparsely populated and cut off from the world by hardened geography, dated superstitions, and old sin. With only the dust cloaked town of Calvenholt (renowned for its guild of glassblowers) serving as place to bed down, drink some pricey wine, and find a cot for the night. Other locations of note include—The Crimson Veil Convent, where the nuns are hesitant to greet strangers, let alone open their doors. The Oasis of Saint Casilda, a verdant gem, believed by some to be a curse, and others a blessing - where the ever-warm waters are reported to have mystical properties, while locals speak in secret of whispers that sing to those who sleep. The ruins of a defaced shrine sit alone, deep in the wasteland of sun blasted salt flats. All are spread several hours apart by treacherous roads, dead landscapes, and mirage inducing heat.
Style of Play
- Narrative-heavy: Player backstories and relationships should matter and will have an effect on how the story unfolds.
- Free Form: Currently leaning towards allowing collaborative writing to dictate outcomes.
- Exploration & Investigation: Uncover the history of the land, decipher forgotten symbols, and piece together clues left by those who disappeared.
- Occult Horror: Expect moments of psychological unease, unnatural phenomena, and themes of possession, temptation, and spiritual erosion.
- Player-Driven Choices: There is no fixed route—players decide which path to follow, who to trust, and how deep to dig.
Character Themes
The desire is to have everyone play people with stories that wind together, either from the past, or from encounters about to unfold. Roles to consider can be: hunters, survivors, skeptics, or believers. Each victory is to be savored because every wound will leave a lasting memory. Your decisions will leave a mark on the story and your history is not just for flavor—it is fuel for what waits in the shadows.
