As Though There Were No Tomorrow (PoisonousIvee/Mr.Aznable)

"Alright, Cap." Aces gave a fake solemn look as he pulled himself from the rest area, "Where do you need me?"
"Actually, Captain, if I may?" Stepinac began, "I don't doubt the eyes of Sergeant Savelli out there, but I hear Corporal McKenna here is on par with 1st Recon. Maybe he should give the Sergeant an extra hand?" Aces tried not to seem too proud; he was a damn fine sniper and he knew it.

"Yes, sir~" Aces replied and strutted out like he was cock of the walk. Stepinac laughed under his breath.
"Quite the bunch you got, sir.." He said jovially.

Stepinac thought that was pretty noble and let him walk away.
Outside, he could hear Martin and Aces chatting as they kept watch; couldn't hear the words as they kept their voices down, but he recognized them well enough. Stein was on the other side of the station, and it was probably for the best.

It was quiet, peaceful; the hot mojave sun was starting its slow descent into the horizon leaving the sky a beautiful mix of orange, purple, and blue.
The colors reminded him of Saya a little.

Part of him regretted not really saying goodbye to her before he left, but work didn't always leave room for pleasantries like that.
It also got him thinking about the Hub finding her somewhere in California, and how if they did place her somewhere that he'd probably never see her again.
It was getting darker, and the night stars twinkled at him, like her eyes did whenever he came home.

He was starting to think that he loved her, in some way. And part of that scared him. Next thing, he’d be looking to get out of the rangers.

Would that really be so bad, though?
But something told him Saya wouldn't ask that of him.
She was always understanding when he was sent out; always wished him luck and safety. She never cried or showed fear, just smiled as she helped with his gear.

It wouldn't be any different than their situation now. She already shared a bed with him. And they've had sex plenty of times. What would change, aside from a soft exchange of words.
She already told him she loved him. And he had tried to convince himself it was just trauma; she had been used and abused for years, it was clearly some kind of trauma bond.
But she was so sincere; she meant every word, every syllable each time she said it. And she never bat an eye when he didn't return it.

But that made it sound like she just took from him, and that didn't feel right. He had been with the desert rangers for twenty odd years and hadn't seen or felt a kind gesture in the whole of it. And then here she comes, showing him that kindness was more than an obligation.

"Captain," Martin moved into his line of sight, "LT relieved me but Ranger Beaumont and his patrol are making their way down the road. Thought I'd tell ya since you were on the way."
