I was 22 when my life got turned upside down. I had just graduated college and started my dream job at a fashion studio when The Shift happened - at least that’s what they’ve been calling it.
Life on Earth was normal up until that point, but the Shift brought magic into our world. We still don’t know how it works, but about 20% of the population can use some amount of magic, and about 2% of that group are powerful enough to overthrow countries on their own if they tried. And a couple of them did.
Those that could use magic become overnight celebrities, often hired by governments as protectors, diplomats, scientists, and the like, depending on their type of magical proficiency.
But as far as I know, I’m the only one who got The System.
The System, as it explained itself to me, works like an RPG system. I do my daily tasks, I get experience, and eventually level up, growing stronger and increasing my magical power. Every day I get a different quest, sometimes easy, sometimes hard, and occasionally I’ll get other quests too, often because of an event nearby. I think the most interesting one so far was to shake one of the Magical Enforcer’s hands… I chickened out after watching someone turn to stone after ogling her for too long. (I’m just glad it wasn’t me.)
So far I’m still on level 1, mostly because my job has been keeping me busy. I’m getting close to the next level though!
