In your basement. o.o
It was winter in the big city. The coldest winter the city had seen in years, according to the radio broadcaster on the radio of some car as it drove by. It had already snowed four times in the past week, and it wasn't planning on getting any warmer. It was December, and it was to be a nice one if you had a family to go home too. If someone was there waiting with a mug of coco, with the little marshmellows on it.

Crystal, did not have anywhere to go. She had no mug of coco, all she had was a backpack of clothes, and a blanket that had once been new, but now was stained a dirty brown. Her hair was a lightish brown, almost orange. Her ears were the same color, and resembled that of a pointed dog ear. They flicked as cars drove by. Her fluffy dog tail wrapped around her as it tried to keep her warm. Her eyes were the colors of crystals.

Crystal was cold, it was a dark night. It had rained all morning and now the streets were frozen over with a thin ice. She was tucked on the side of a building. The only thing to keep her warm was the soggy and starting to solidify blanket that she had wrapped around her to keep her body heat in. She shivered with cold. She hoped the sun would come up soon... It was going to be a long cold night....

Karl walked slowly down the sidewalk, taking car not to slip on the heavy build up of ice under his feet. He liked the Christmas season, with lights aglow and people in a someone nicer mood, but Christmas was still a ways off, thus leaving him to deal with the thing he hated about Christmas:
The cold and snow.

'You'd think, given the way the weather had been, there would be more salt than ice underfoot. But noooo, can waste tax payers money on anything that they might need!'

A sharp breeze made him crinkle his nose and let out a sneeze, stopping him for a minute in his tracks. Despite his warm dress, approved arctic survival coat, hat and gloves bought from Marks', he still felt like an icy hand of death was on his back. His body mass was thin, despite the amount of fast food joints he helped stay alive. Good for sandy beaches, not snow dunes.

Stretching and cracking his back, he felt the bags in his hands dig a little deeper into the gloves from the weight. Getting ones shopping done early was nice but carrying them back home in this weather wasn't. A yawn escaped from his mouth as he proceeded to continue on, when he saw the bundled lump tucked in the ally way. Slightly curious, he stepped closer for a better look.

(Hope you like:heart:)

Crystal was shivering even more by now. Her teeth were chattering as she pulled the blanket up over her head. She felt like she was going to die, but she knew that as soon as the sun came out she would be fine. Just a good 6 hours or so, and she would be in the clearing.

She wouldn't have heard Karl had he hadn't sneezed. Her ears perked up as she pulled the blanket a little over her head. Peeking out from behind her blanket she stared towards the man who was walking towards her. She stiffened as she pulled the blanket back over her head.

If she looked like a pile of trash, then the man would probably just walk away from her... right? That was her hopes.

Her movements brought Karls' attention bearing down on to her. His boots cruching loudly as he neared. Stopping in front of her, his shadow falling and covering her shivering form, he started to address her.

"You know that you're not doing yourself any favours sitting on the cold cement right? Especially with only that slip of cloth for a blanket to keep warm with. Why head to a shelter or a church for the night?"

"AH-CHOO!" A much louder sneeze left Karls' lungs before he continued.

"'Night's to fucking cold to be out in at all."

She jumped the sound of his sneeze. She remained under the blanket for a long time, before she realized it was hopeless. He's spotted her, and he was bound to talk to her. She pulled the blanket from her face as she gritted her teeth in hopes that it would stop them from chattering.

"T-they d-d-don't l-l-let animals in-into the church." She managed to say between huffs as she looked at him.

"Why d-don't you be on your way?" She added.

He paused for a minute after she spoke, letting a few strands of light from lampposts to illuminate her crouched form.

'Even with the grime, she kinda cute. I wonder if I could...' Karls thought trailed off as his mind registered her question for the first time. Slowly he kneeled down in front of her, and blessing silently for the weight in his hands dropping away as the bags settled softly in the snow.

"I'll take off if that's what you want; I just thought you might rather have a real bed under you for the night. But if you want to sleep with your back to a cold brick wall and your tail in the snow, I'll go." He said, absent-mindidly rubbing his gloves together for extra warmth.

Crystal watched him for a long moment. He seemed like a nice enough man. He really seemed like he cared weather or not she was safe or not. She looked around as if she make sure that he was not talking to anyone else.

"You'll really house me for that night?" She asked with a raised eyebrow. "W-what's the catch?" She asked as she him as she pulled the blanket more over her face as the wind blew.

"Well, for starters, I'd like to to carry one of these bags while we walk. It's killing my arms having to drag both of them." He replied as he held up a large plastic bag stuffed with boxes, a small smile on his face as he spoke.

"Look, it's the Christmas month, cold as the center of hell and in all likely hood you;ll be dead by morning. I'd rather go to sleep tonight knowing I stopped that from happening. So are you interested or not?"

She hesitated. Her eyes flickered from his face to the bag in his hand as her ears flattened. She stared with curiosity, and wondered if food was in those boxes in the bag. She gave him a small nod, what harm could one night be? And he was right, it was cold enough to kill penguins out here.

She began to stand slowly. Her blanket remained wrapped around her, she didn't want to leave it behind, and her clothes were shredded and ripped in varies places underneath. She reached out and grabbed the bag with an cold and pale hand. She looked at him.

"How far do you live? Where do you live?" She asked these questions, wanting to know where she would be staying for the night, and curious as to how far it would be until she was nice and warm.

"I'm about a block and a half up the road. Small little apartment. Nothing fancy but the rents a steal." He replied as he stood as well, catching quick glimpses at the bare skin that came into view as she moved.

"Put these on. You need them more right now than me." He added, removing his gloves and hat, his brown hair clinging to the wool and turning into a complete mess.

She set the bag down as she put the hat on, it was warm, and it covered her cold ears. She then put on the even warmer gloves. Her shivering body clung to the little bit of warmth the gloves had. She began to warm a little as she picked up the bag again.

"Thank you." She said with a smile as she began to follow him to his apartment.

Karl watched her as she slipped the hat and gloves on. It was almost comical, he thought, seeing this little slip of a girl wearing something too large for her hands. The thought was erased as another gust of wind started to stir. Pulling the hood up on the coat, he began walking up the street.

"So......what's your name?" He asked casually, trying not to slip on a thick patch of black ice and attempting at some light conversation for the short walk.

"Karl. I'd shake your hand, but it's too cold to take them out my pockets right now." He said as they neared a slightly run down looking building standing all of six stories high.

Stopping, he pointed forwards as he spoke. "That's it. I'm in the center, towards the back a bit. Windows open away from the sun all day long. Could be nicer, but what can your do eh?"

"Its not so bad, you could live on the streets." She pointed out as she headed towards the building. Her hands wrapped around the bag as she wondered how warm it was inside. She wondered if he had hot coco, and if he was willing to share. She shivered again as the wind blew.

"Well let's get inside then before our toes fall off!" She exclaimed excitedly as he tail wagged.

The second the front door opened, the hot air blasted down hard enough that Karl began unzipping his coat before the door behind them closed. Pulling a keyring from his front jean pocket, he stepped towards the security door. Passing a small, black piece of plastic in front of a near by reader, a loud conforming buzz sounded.

"Go ahead. I'm right behind." He said, seeing another opportunity to watch her tail move again.

She took in a deep breath as the heat comforted her. She stepped into the apartment as her tail wagged. She dropped the bag in her hand as she pulled off the hat abd gloves. "Oh, it feels so nice in here." She said as she rubbed her arms. She looked around at the stuff in the building.

The building itself looked like a set piece for an action flick: there to hold a conversation and maybe get shot or blow to hell depending on the mood of the director. Karl let the door softly close behind him as he care up behind her.

"Warmer than outside, that's for sure. Cool in the summer too. A short ride to the third and we can get rid of this extra weight." He replied, motioning towards the elevator at the back of the reception room.

Crystal turned as she looked at him and nodded, picking up the bag once again as she followed him. She could have slept in the main entrance, it was so warm, bit she figured someone would have probably kicked her out by morning. So she followed him onto the elevator.

She was nervous trusting Karl, but he didn't seem like a creep. She held onto the bag tightly as she rocked on her heels, eager to see what the apartment room looked like. She wondered if Karl would try to get her to shower. Even though she knew she smells terrible, she was part dog. she was the type of dog who wasn't fond of baths.

Karl ignored the smell for the moment. Dropping off the bag and stripping the heavy winter gear from his body were is immediate concerns. The elevator ride was short, thankfully, allowing them a chance to get in sooner rather than later.

As the door opened at the third floor, he lead Crystal down a soft lit corridor. Stopping at the second last door on the left, he fished his keys out of his pocket once more.

The apartment was small, clean but not spotless, and held few windows. Karl wasted no time in removing the excess clothing, tossing his coat onto a near by chair. A large black couch sat at one end of what was the living room, across from a decent size t.v. and stereo. A small kitchen table stood near the living room, four chairs spaced neatly apart, while the kitchen itself was left open to plain view.

"I'm going to make a pot of tea. You want anything?" He asked back over his shoulder as he walked to the kitchen after removing his boots.

Crystal was in awe at the small warm apartment. She shivered with warmth as she looked at him. Her body hadn't felt so much warmth in a long time. Her ears perked as she looked towards him with an almost excited smile. Her tail twitched.

"Do you have... hot coco?" She asked as she tilted her head to the side.

She noticed she still had the bag in her hand.

"Where did you want me to put this?" She asked him as she followed him into the kitchen.

Karl looked at the bag in her hand and said "Either the couch or table is fine. The boxes have bubble wrap to prevent breakage."

Rummaging through the nearest cupboard, he produced a box who's label read: Cobblestone Kitchens Chocolate Raspberry with Rim Trim Hot Chocolate mix.

"That do?" He asked, passing her the parallelogram shaped container.

(I've actually got this stuff on my counter. lol)

(Lol!)

Her ears twitched as she nodded. "That sounds tasty." She admitted as she set the bag on the counter. She began to look around the room curiously, picking things up as she looked at it all.

Her stomach growled as she saw the different things of food, and she blushed. Her tail twitching from side to side as she looked at him.

Her tail twitching distracted Karl for a few seconds, until he heard the rumble coming from her stomach.

"Guess you haven't eating anything in a while, huh?" He reached above her head and started pulling out a few plates and cups. "There's some left over Chinese in the fridge to can have. Just take it out of the containers. Metal in microwaves and all that. Do you what this made with water or milk?" He asked as he opened the door of the refrigerator,

She turned as she looked at him thoughtfully. "Hmm milk." She said after a moment. Her eyes turned towards the fridge as she blinked. She was really hungry, but was already imposing enough as it was.

"That's okay." She said. "I've already raided your home as it is, I'm not going to raid your food also. You shouldn't toss your left overs to anyone whose hungry, I mean, what will you eat?" She asked, use to having to fight or pick through the trash cans for food. If she had leftovers, no way would she share them, except for maybe with a dtarving dog or two.
