With the Avatar's death 4 years prior, the White Lotus searches all around the continent for next one born in the Earth Cycle. Suk-Chin was one of them, leaving to search for the next Avatar, but so far was unsuccessful. He was there for the birth of his grandchild, Kang-Son before his departure, and returns four years later since Sang-Ook has yet to be checked. Children four years of age were tested by placing various toys among them, only four of the objects are correct, but so far the test was unsuccessful. However, four of the toys were missing and the White Lotus members searched the town until they reached the Lion Head Shrine. It was occupied by the Yun family praying to the statue of the Lion Turtle's head. The young Kang-Son was holding the missing objects, the four toys that were most familiar to him. Then, in front of his family and members of the White Lotus, he touched the statue which caused its eyes to glow white and a pillar shot up into the sky. This confirms that Yun Kang-Son is the next Avatar.

For the next 12 years, Kang-Son has been taught by his grandfather not only his natural ability of Earthbending, but also Metalbending to prepare him for his duty. Finally, at 16, Suk-Chin reveals to him that he is the Avatar, and have to leave his life behind as a normal boy. He has to learn the other elements, starting with fire. Suk-Chin and his friend Kwan were the only ones who could come with him, so he said goodbye to his family and travels to the Fire Nation as the first step of his training.
