Prologue:

Anji's hand shook. Something didn't feel right to her...something was off. Seriously off. It was the night of her 18th birthday and she had plans to celebrate it with her friends. Instead, she was here, standing in front of a door she'd never wanted to see again. It was the door to the basement of her family's house; she'd been told all her life that she was forbidden from entering there.

She had only dared to break the rule once and had paid the consequences.
Her grandmother had found her and she received such a brutal beating,
she'd been bed ridden for a week. So...why had mother asked her to come
to the basement tonight? Just the idea of the entering this place made
her blood run cold.

She didn't understand why she was here, but she was frightened, so very
frightened. Sucking in a breath, Anji reached out a shaking hand to
grasp the cold doorknob. She turned it slowly and pushed. The door
opened on a wailing creak, sending a shiver down the girl's spine. Anji
gulped.

The moment of truth seemed to have arrived as she stared into the
darkness. "M-mother?" her voice shook. "Mother? Where are you?" Blindly,
she stepped onto the top platform of the stairs and began to make her
way down, a hand sliding on the railing to help keep her balance in the
darkness.

She stumbed her way all the way down, eyes blinking rapidly as they
tried to adjust to the blackness before her. As she hit the cement of
the basement floor, she gave another shout, "Mother! Are you here?"

No reponse. She could make out the flicker of candles from the room she
knew to be at the end of the long hall. So, she made her way down the
hall despite the grinding feeling of dread that was sitting low in her
gut.

When she reached the end, she gulped and entered the small room she knew
to be there. The door slammed behind her and she jumped with a small
shout of surprise.

"Welcome, my daughter. It is about time you arrived." The candles in the
room began to dance and Anji stared at her family as they gathered
around her, dressed in all black robes. "Mother...what's going on?" she
asked, backing herself up against the door.

"The day of your destiny has arrived." A male voice said; it sounded
like her father.

They all began to chant, some unknown language she couldn't understand
echoed in her ears. A searing pain began in her gut and she screamed as
it soared throughout her body; she didn't understand what was happening.
The pain began to intensify to the point where she almost wished she
were dead. "Stop!! Stop it!!" she screamed.

Then, she collapsed. Smacked her head on the cement of the floor. Blood
pooled from the gash that formed as her family closed ranks around her
unconscious form.

"That's it, my daughter. Rest now, let the curse seep into your very
being." The hooded figure placed a hand on the girl's soft red locks.
"When you awake, you will be ours and serve without question. That is
your curse."
