Samurai Slasher! The brand new arcade game set to take the world by storm produced by the one and only Ghostrock Games. At least, that was the plan anyways and things seldom truly go according to plan. Technical delays, coding bugs, even reports of mysterious things happening within the company were all rumored to bring about the closing of its doors after producing merely one, singular cabinet of their latest arcade game. With all the bad press and tales of the machine being cursed it was fated to fall into obscurity, being passed around from arcade to arcade and never really being the groundbreaking piece of technology it was intended to be.
Of course it was top of the line in quality with a specially raised platform that could fit two players side by side, each receiving four buttons they could press with their feet to control movement during the combat as well as a prop katana that was attached by a thick cord to the machine so it could read the inputs. The machine also had a standard joystick with a few sturdy buttons for movement around the areas of the world, allowing the player to experience tense action during fights but also to immerse themselves in the world for an experience that tried to meld the RPG genre with the bog-standard Beat-Em-Up types that otherwise dominated arcades all over. Those who played the game never had anything bad to say about it, by all accounts it was a wonderful game, but most people didn't feel much desire to return to it and dump endless quarters into the slot so it was considered a failure by industry standards.
The game was cursed people said, that was the reason the company collapsed so suddenly despite being at the top of their field. Surely spirits as dark as the ones in the game inhabited the wood paneling, at least that's what people whispered about. In reality no one had suffered any ill-will from the machine, at least none that could be proven. The sexy girls that filled the character selection screen were surely just the developers going above and beyond to offer variety right? And the cases of disappearances were just coincidence when many arcades were in high-crime areas to begin with. So when Callie Liddle, a student with some time to kill on her hands, stumbled upon Samurai Slasher! in the back corner of a sparsely occupied arcade surely there was nothing to be worried about?
The wonderfully bright and vivid depictions on the sides of the machine showed dark warriors clad in armor yet with glowing red eyes; They showed oni, demons, in their twisted forms looming in the distance through the mist; and they showed the mighty castle of the Dark Shogun himself come from the afterlife to claim all of Japan for his own. The flickering screen displayed scenes of battle, staring down enemies and maneuvering the sword to parry or strike at just the right moments, but also the thrill of seeing just what was in store around every corner through exploration. Who wouldn't want to give it a try? The words lingered on the screen for her to read: "Can you survive the wrath of the Dark Shogun and save all of Japan?"
