The icy night winds of the desert blew harshly across your body, punctuating the sweat from the run. At your side is another man older perhaps in his late twenties, fit from long hours of restless workouts and limited outlet. Sweat makes his shaved scalp glisten slightly in the limited moonlight, sweat from the run, from the escape. Looking back the prison was a distant speck, only visible due to masses of floodlights illuminating the area around itself. Your partner slows to a stop, bending forward with hands on his knees as he catches his breath, panting, then laughing in triumph. "We did it kid." He looks back at the prison again, smiling in triumph. "They won't realize we're gone till it's way too late." His gaze turns to you as he straightens, the smile still there. "Come on, let's get you introduced to the boss…"

Present-day

The job they said was a simple one, though details were left a little scarce, need to know. Team Rocket tended to lack in the true young blood, trainers who could plausibly be just starting out. There were a few of course, but you came at just the right time for this new scheme. You were to be sent to Kanto, paperwork forged and filed to make things look legitimate. Pokemon, equipment, and even a Pokedex, though jailbroken for some unorthodox programs. It'd all ensure you look the part to work on your mission. This however is where it gets vague, you are to travel across the land like any other new trainer, take on the Pokemon League, and associated Gym Leaders, all as part of the cover. But the rest? Well, you were told that it would all come in good time.

From the docks in Vermilion City, a nondescript black car picked you up. From there you were driven to where your journey was to begin, where all trainer's journey in this region began, Pallet Town. Home to Professor Oak, this small out of the way settlement had little else going for it, unless quiet life in the country was what you were looking for. Being the primary researcher and most well-known league associate who dealt with trainer licenses, it left this town to draw in prospective trainers to be interviewed and given a start by Oak. In your case, you'd skip past that whole formality.

Arriving after sunset, the car pulls up to a small motel near the edge of town. The driver had been rather mute at this point, only giving non-committal grunts to any asked question, now he got out and handed you a small black backpack. "Good luck kid." Within you'll find everything you need to begin, eleven Pokeball's, one marked to indicate it had a Pokemon within. Five Potions and a compact little combination Pokegear Pokedex. Lastly a card key to one of the motel rooms for a night's stay. The start of your journey was here.

Yuki still remembered that night as if it was yesterday. Where he felt ran across the desert with another escaped convict and almost passed out from running. The prison’s alarms screaming out as the night sky lit up with spot lights. Guards and prisoners shouting mixed with in and fighting ensuing behind the young man. More than enough to distract anyone from seeing the two of them escaping. The night replayed in his dreams for the past two months, every night. Yuki struggled to sleep at night because of these dreams and found himself looking over his shoulder for two months. It’s only natural. One doesn’t simply forget escaping prison during a riot. Being sent to prison isn’t something to forget about either. His freedom was getting stripped from him and a holding cell became his new life. Until that man gave his a chance for freedom. A illusion of it, at least.

The car ride from Vermillion wasn’t a comfortable one. The car was great, but the atmosphere was less so. It was filled with an awkward silence between the driver and Yuki. Both strangers, forced to sit near each other for an extended period of time. He didn’t feel the need to initiate a conversation with him. Which is why he asked for him to turn on the radio. The car filled with trashy music for the rest of the ride, which distracted him from the driver.

The young man also kept focus outside the car, watching the scenery through the window. Nothing special crosses their path, but everything made Yuki become an wide eyed child. Orre wasn’t the best place to live. It was primarily a desert and had little in terms of wild Pokémon. He would have been lucky to see a Skarmory fly through the air. But Kanto was so much different. A bright shade of green filled his vision and all sorts of Pokémon came across the car. Some unrecognizable to him. It made him realize a unknown truth. Pokemon were a privilege for those in Orre. Everywhere else? An everyday thing that’s apart of life. One you can even ignore at times. Sad, but true. Yuki almost had a sensory overload from it all.

”Thank you.” Yuki took the bag, slinging it over his shoulder. He climbed out the car and pulled the card key for the motel room. It’s alright after sunset. The mission will need to start tomorrow morning. Unless they expect him to travel at night. Which was certainly not the case. If the driver had nothing else for him, he made his way to the room number matching his card and accommodate himself with his lodgings.

The driver gets back and his car and drives off then, leaving you in the rearview mirror. Now you are truly alone, left to your own devices for the time being. The room was easy to find and rather standard, a bed facing a tv cabinet and a small bathroom off in its own enclosed space. No luxury hotel but it certainly was a marked improvement over a prison cell. With some space to call your own it is simple enough to sort through the supplies he was given and more importantly see the partner Pokemon he had been paired with.

Tapping the release mechanism on the ball will release a red beam of energy that arched to the ground like lightning. This energy takes shape and within mere moments a brown and white furball of a Pokemon had been revealed. An Eevee blinked its eyes to adjust to the new light and looked up at you with a cocked head, though with a slightly wagging tail. It seems happy Pokemon and curious though not quite as energetic playful as the cute appearance might suggest.

Yuki wasn’t at ease with being all alone. A small part of him still feels as if he’s being watched. Like the police will come through the motel door at any second to take him away. This feeling stuck with him for the past two months. It wasn’t as strong as the night after his escape, however. Yuki turned on the room’s tv and flipped to a random channel of cartoons. The purpose being to fill the room with some background noise. Too put him at ease. Items from the bag spilled out onto the bed with his focus being on the pokeball. The one housing his starter, given to him by Team Rocket.

He held bad memories of Pokémon given to him by a gang. This wasn’t his first pokemon. The title went to a Arbok from his time in Orre, where he was still a member of a street gang. It originally belonged to the leader, but rumor had it he found it too weak. It wasn’t exactly a strong Pokémon, but served well enough as protection. Problems came from its attitude. The snake had to be the worst partner to have. Always biting at him and never listening to a word he said. Yuki only brought it out during a fight because of the bad blood between them. They parted ways at his arrest.

A single look to the Eevee told him a different story. That maybe their is hope for them. Some chance at a good relationship. ”Um....hi.” Yuki waved to the little brown Pokémon before getting on his knees in front of the bed. ”I’m not sure how this works, but I’m Yuki. Your new trainer. Let’s get along. Please?” For a criminal, he acted like a awkward teenager.

The Eevee gives you a considering look, studying. Perhaps you weren't what it was expecting either, perhaps it had expected more the selfish criminal that were common in Team Rocket. In any case it gives a small nod. "Vee." The Eevee then moves forward and rubs against your leg, head pushed against you as it moved. It seems for the moment it was willing to accept you.

Checking the Pokedex, you'll be able to find more details about the Eevee, moves and abilities known by the Eevee and a rough guage of its combat prowess. Probably more importantly right now it'd show the Eevee to be a female, allowing for a better idea on names should you desire it.

The rest of the night would pass peacefully, Eevee jumping up onto the bed and watching the screen before eventually curling up to nap. Though there were of course worries, nothing came to pass that night. The police did not come storming in to drag you back to Orre.

The next morning it was time to set out. The instructions- as they were- simply said to head up Route 1 like you were just starting and begin making your way to the gyms like normal. A simple cover for whatever they have planned.

What was not mentioned in the plan on what to do if as soon as you step out onto Route 1 there is a pretty girl right in your path. Dressed simply for the road with a black tank top, knee length skirt and white thigh high socks, the girl turns to you with some slight surprise. Looking at her belt it seems the girl has only a single Pokemon, someone starting out. "Oh, hello there. Didn't think anyone had gone to see Oak today. I'm Blue, what's your name?" She held put a hand, friendly as she smiled warmly.

The young man’s eyes went wide by Eevee’s greeting. He too didn’t expect this outcome, like Eevee did for him. In his mind, he expected it to ignore him or give a reluctant agreement. Just like criminals do for each other. A hand unconsciously reached for the evolution pokemon. Her fur felt nice and warm as his fingers ran through it. A good impression was already left on him more than Arbok. Is this how being a trainer was suppose to feel?

Complete trust wasn’t there, however. He can feel this from Eevee, but it was already obvious. His knowledge on the subject wasn’t good, but it’s easily comparable to people. Trust isn’t something that is easily built. It comes naturally and over time. Doesn’t mean he isn’t happy with her not going for his throat right away.

Yuki got himself ready for bed, climbing into the sheets with just underwear. Pajamas were never on his list of necessities and he can’t go nude. Not with Eevee out of her ball. The television was kept on throughout the night, providing good background noise for him to sleep. He didn’t feel comfortable in complete silence as of yet.

No new messages came to his Pokegear. This meant his instructions remained the same. Act as a gym trainer and challenge the gyms. What were their plans for him? He didn’t know, but it will come with it.

So where is he off too? The map app on his Pokegear gave him two options. The gym in Virdian City, which is the closest one, and Pewter City. Virdian seemed to be the best option, but it was soon pushed to the side. The ground gym was suppose to be the strongest gym in Kanto. Why challenge the strongest when your the weakest? It made no sense. Pewter became his new target. Just have to pass through Virdian Forest. Simple enough.

Eevee wasn’t placed back into her ball. Keeping Pokemon confide doesn’t build trust or friendship. For him, it’s like being in a prison cell. A glorified one at that.

”Huh?” His first instinct was to blush and give a confused mutter. Was someone really coming to talk to him right away? Did she want something from him? ”I’m Yuki. This is Eevee.” He spoke at a low tone and reached out for her hand, shaking it. ”Are you a gym challenger too?” He pointed to the single pokeball on her belt.

Blue noted the shyness and stepped back after the handshake with a small friendly chuckle. "Yeah, freshly starting today." She gave her ball a small tap, but didn't release her own Pokemon at this moment. Instead, her attention turned to Eevee who thus far had happily spent her time following alongside you with the occasional dash off to investigate something interesting, but otherwise came back quickly. Right now Eevee sat as you stopped and eyed the girl, though she didn't seem unfriendly to the newcomers. "Such a cute fluffball."

Looking back up at you her gaze turned a little competitive, along with a small smirk. "You know, they say when two trainer's eyes meet they have to fight, right? Not a hard rule, but how about it? Why don't we see what each other has got, put a friendly little wager on it?"

”Ya, she is.” Yuki wasn’t sure if Eevee was ok with being called that by him just yet. Might be a little creepy, considering they met several hours ago. Not even a full day to fully process one another. ”She’s my starter. Trying to get accustomed to one another. We’re going to be partners, after all.” It was the truth since Oak wasn’t mentioned anywhere in that statement. Did Rocket give him an excuse for skipping the whole interview process?

”They say that?” Yuki sounded legitimately confused by the unwritten rule. No one ever told him this before. Must be something only trainers understood. ”I don’t see why not. As long as Eevee is fine with it I have no objections.” He finally gave a smile for the girl.

It was the perfect chance for the duo to test themselves and see how they do in a fight. Better against another newbie than someone out to get them. ”What exactly do you have in mind for this wager?” He was sure it’s nothing serious. But he rather know now and not worry about it during the fight.

Blue tapped her ball again as she considered, seeming to be a bit of a habit of keeping her hands near where she could reach it. "Both wager up 500 yen sound fair? Not a bad amount and keeps things friendly."

Once an amount was agreed upon, Blue would take a few steps back to clear some space. Once the pair had a small bit of distance between them she'd give a nod and with a smile toss out her Pokeball. "Let's go River!" The ball would snap open mid-air and release a familiar beam of energy. This time the shape was more rounded and soon a pair of blue balls took shape as a Pokemon. The Azurill cried out in joy and got ready to fight. Though your Eevee would have a the speed advantage here by far.

500? Yuki was a little hesitant to accept the wager. His wallet only held 1000 in it, which is only twice as much. Half his money will be lost if he loses this battle. The bet was nearly called off, but some part of him held back reason and rationality. Was it the same competitiveness Blue held? ”Let’s go, Eevee.” Yuki nodded to the evolution Pokemon, watching as the two now faced each other off. So this is what a Pokémon battle looks like as a trainer? He saw them on tv, but always had a hard time imagining what they were like. Only experience can tell. Time to get some for himself. ”Um.....tail whip!” Yuki took a moment to remember what moves Eevee knew before ordering one.

Eevee dashed forward a little before turning and whipping her tail out against the Azurill. This did no damage, but it seemed to work for keeping the Pokemon off balance and not as able to defend itself. "Fight back, struggle!" Bouncing off her ball of a tail, River slammed herself forward into Eevee before jumping back, dealing a small amount of damage.

Struggle Attack AC 4: Roll 13, hit
Damage: 14 (Normal, Physical)

For damage go ahead and minus your Defence stat from the damage taken before applying the rest as HP damage. So in this case Eevee is taking 9 hp of damage

Yuki wasn’t knowledgeable about Pokémon and everything about them. Pathetic for living in a world that revolves around them. He wasn’t completely hopeless, however. The basics of Pokémon battling were not lost to him thanks to watching many battles in tv. Tail whip wasn’t a attack, but is known for weakening a pokemon’s defenses.
”That’s enough of that, Eevee. Tackle attack!” It was time to fight if Blue decided it was.

[1d20]=8

[2d6+14]=2+14=16

Eevee surged forward in retaliation, taking your command to heart as she surged forward. The strength of both Pokemon was about on par, with Eevee having the edge on the more focused attack. River was sent skidding back as she was struck, almost toppling over but managing to keep upright. "I believe in you River, keep focused!" River bounced forward again and struck at Eevee once again, hitting a little harder than the first time around.

Hit and deals damage

Blue uses Focused Orders

Struggle attack at AC4: 12+1, hit
Damage: 16 (Normal, Physical)

There was an odd feeling rising within him as Eevee’s attack landed. One that can be discribed as a mix of pride and satisfaction. Both aimed at Eevee. So this is what it was like to be a trainer, huh? ”Don’t let up! Tackle! He got more into it as Eevee took more damage. His mind focusing on the battle entirely now.

Eevee HP: 25/45

Yuki uses Focused Orders

Eevee uses Tackle: [1d20+1]=5+1=6

Damage: [2d6+14]=10+14=24

Blue was just as focused, giving a slight wince as River was knocked back again, this time showing more serious damage and getting close to being knocked out, but not quite yet. "Keep it up River!" River slammed forward once more, keeping the repatitve early battle going as the two Pokemon beat each other down.

Hit and River suffers 1 injury(will explain soon)

Focused Orders

Struggle: 13+1, hit
Damage 14

The battles Yuki watches were never as repetitive as this. They were much more destructive and engaging to watch. But those battles involved much more experienced trainers and Pokémon. Not two kids, who just got their Pokémon not a day ago. ”Don’t fall, Eevee!” The duel colored haired trainer started to grit his teeth.

Eevee: 16/45

Focused Orders

Tackle: [1d20+1]=9+1=10
Damage: [2d6+14]=8+14=22

Eevee, gritting her own teeth cried out and slammed River back once again. River didn't quite fall but certainly wouldn't take another hit, but potentially neither would Eevee. She tried for one last attack but the less refined strike was easily dodged by Eevee and instead of letting her Pokemon be knocked out she held out the Pokeball and returned the Azurill. "Close one but I think you take the win there."

Though she had clearly been out to win Blue was sportsman like enough to take her defeat in stride. Stepping forward she pulled out a purse and handed over the appropriate bit of money to you. "Good job, though next time I run into you I won't go so easy on ya'." Giving you a playful wink at that last comment.

Azurill returning to her pokeball snapped Yuki back to reality, where everyone lived in. Not in the mental state exclusive to trainers. His head shot up from the ground and his eyes landed on Blue’s slender figure. It was almost like a spell placed on him was broken. But there was still confusion in his face.

She was giving him the fight? The idea was strange to him, but it didn’t take long for his brain to process. Blue had the foresight to see possible defeat, just as he did. Why keep fighting if victory slipped from your grasp? He thought that for a moment. Just before Blue recalled her Pokémon.

”Thank you. I think I learned a good amount from the battle.” He gave a small smile as he walked over to Eevee. A potion was pulled from his bag and sprayed on his starter, who was held in the opposite arm. ”Hope our first battle wasn’t too hard on you.” After checking on his Pokémon, he walked over to Blue with another potion held out. Eevee still in his arm. ”Here. Your Pokémon needs it after the battle we just had.”

Blue was a little surprised by your offer, but smiled and took the offered potion. Bringing River back out, she knelt down to administer the spray carefully over the bruises from the battle. "I could have pushed it harder, but seemed like a good place to stop things. Was a close enough fight that I don't feel bad about myself."

Putting away the now empty potion bottle to be recycled later, she slowly stood up as her Azurill began bouncing more happily and energetically. She smiled at the little Pokemon and shook her head before turning to you. "Well, since you've saved me the trip of going back to heal this little guy up, how's about we walk together for a little while? Hardly anything dangerous on Route 1 but the company would be appreciated."

Giving away a potion brought him down to a total of three left. This counted the one he used on Eevee. Even so, he can tell that it didn’t heal all the damage she received in the battle. But enough too not be completely injured and allows her to fight against other Pokémon. Until they get to a Pokémon center, at least. ”It makes sense. I just didn’t expect it that’s all. You gave me a competitive feeling.” Doesn’t have to mean she will win by her pokemon’s Wellbeing. It just didn’t come to him right away.

Yuki allowed Eevee to stay outside her ball and maybe play around River. If just for a little bit. ”That sounds like a good idea.” Yuki smiled as he called for Eevee to follow along with them. He started their path out of Pallet Town and further into Route one. Both hands in his jacket’s pockets while his bag hanged from his shoulders. ”So......are you planning on challenging the league?” The clearly awkward guy was doing his best to start a conversation. ”I am, but mostly because everyone else does.”

Blue got moving, just a little ahead of you. This unintentionally, or at least seemingly, gives you a good look at her slender body as she walks, the sway of her hips as she moved. The cut of her skirt though was modest and besides the occasional suggestive outline there was little to see right now. “To start with? Yeah will take on the gyms. Really it’s more an excuse to travel, get out and really see the world. Taking on gyms and beating trainers should keep me funded. Certainly worse ways for a girl to make a living.”

Travelling down route 1 was fairly peaceful. The path not crowded and not often used outside of the first step of trainers in this region. Eventually though the small group would pull up short at the rustling of something in the bushes. Before their eyes a pair of small birds burst out. One black and white feathered, the other cream and brown. The Starly and Pidgey seemed busy fighting one another, oblivious to the trainers. Blue glanced aside at Yuki and slowly pulled out a spare pokeball. “What do ya say. We give a shot and catching these two?”

”Ya. There certainly is worst ways.” Yuki quickly picked up on what she was eluding too and didn’t go further into the topic. Not openly, at least. It didn’t take a genius to figure out what she meant. Women selling their bodies were a pretty common sight in Orre. The lack of great law enforcement allowed street workers to stand around without fear of arrest. Yuki even saw a few working in alleyways as a kid. As much as he wanted to deny it, some twisted part of him can see Blue being popular with the guys. Specially with the way she walks.

Averting his gave with a small blush, he tried to think of a way to avoid thinking about it. ”Does that mean you rarely left your hometown? If that’s your reason? Nothing wrong with that, but I just want to know. It’s kind of the same for me.” Considering the type of place Orre was that’s not a surprise. Anywhere is better than the desert.

”What is that bird?” Yuki didn’t recognize the brown one as opposed to Pidgey. His Pokedex revealed it to be a Starly of the Sinnoh Region. Looks like some migrated all the way out here, huh? ”Sounds like a plan. If you don’t mind, I would like that Pidgey.” Taking out a spare ball, he aimed for Pidgey and threw it.

Yuki threw a basic ball at Pidgey: [1d20]=18

"Yeah I left my home behind. Small town life was not for me you know? Seeing the same faces and same places day in, day out. Needed to get out there, needed to be free." Blue for her part clearly had no idea the sort of life you lead up till now, no idea the struggles. She seemingly just assumed what Rocket wanted everyone to assume, that you were just like everybody else.

Throwing out your ball at the Pidgey, the device strikes squarely momentarily digitizing the bird and locking it inside. The ball hit the ground then but did not stop moving, instead it began to shake, once, twice, three times... Instead of locking alas, the ball snapped open, hinge breaking from the violent force as the Pidgey was released, calling out in anger as it focused it's attention on you.

Blue attempted to capture the Starly the same way, throwing her own ball. She however failed to even make contact and the ball landed harmlessly upon the ground, short of the bird which now also turned aggressive.

Turn Order:
Yuki and Blue(Both went)
Eevee
Pidgey
Starly
River

Eevee's turn

Yuki watched the wild bird become red light and sucked into the empty ball. Eyes glued to the small device as he shakes on the grass. A light amount of anxiety grew within him as it shook. So this was another experience of a Pokémon trainer? Such a small thing that can easily be over looked was giving him some level of anxiety. What were the odds?

”Oh no...” Yuki muttered as the ball broke and Pidgey glared at him. ”I was really hoping that would work on the first go. Let’s make sure they don’t escape.” Yuki said to Blue before turning to Eevee. ”Use tackle on Pidgey. Make sure it doesn’t escape!”
Eevee uses tackle on Pidgey:

Attack Roll: [1d20]=19

Damage Roll: [2d6+14]=4+14=18

Eevee slammed into the Pidgey, knocking it back and down to the ground so it didn't just flee. The Pidgey retaliated with its own strike, being quite a strong little bird as it packed a punch against Eevee. The Starly meanwhile seemed a little more tactical, focused on unnerving River into uselessness. This however did not stop River from slamming her tail into the Starly and knocking the other bird down a notch, with the hopes of letting her trainer capture it
