This is a really stupid idea, Joshua thought for the tenth time, but that didn't stop him pulling the window open and slipping on through. There were a million questions running through his head that he had to have answered: why it looked like she didn't live in her own house, why she'd had places taped off from visitors she seldom had, and most importantly, why she had gotten so weird when he had asked her out for real. She'd said 'maybe,' yes, but if he didn't press the issue she would never answer him at all. Granted, climbing in through her second-story window after their Valentine's Day "not-date" was probably a terrible way to go about making a good impression, but he'd already made that dumb decision-- by now, there was no reason not to compound that foolishness with more foolishness.

Of the many possibilities he'd been expecting when he stepped into her house, though, this was not one of them. The room stretching out before him was massive, stretching out a great ways ahead and a long ways in either direction. The decor was nothing like the relatively spartan quarters he'd roamed around in her house-- the place was rich and sumptuous, something between a Victorian parlor and a feudal Japanese estate out of the movies, open to the February night sky, but the strangest part about the whole thing was that the floor... mostly wasn't. There was a small walkway on the edges, yes, but most of the floor space was taken up by a massive pool. What was weirder was that this looked more like an aquarium than any swimming pool he'd ever seen-- a thick mesh of aquatic plants obscured most of the bottom from view, and what he -could- see was an irregular, uneven rocky floor.

All in all, it was a gorgeous, if more than slightly bizarre arrangement. These must be the rooms she had locked and warned off, he realized-- there was one across the hall, and the one on the first floor must lead into the pool itself. Taking a deep breath, Joshua mustered his will and made himself go around the walkway, taking care to avoid the expensive-looking furniture and art hanging on the walls. Weird as it was, he needed an answer; maybe, he thought, he could get one about this, too...

...and the thought died in his head as he recognized the shirt and skirt she had worn earlier, laying almost casually discarded on the floor. She was in here-- she must be taking a late-night dip. He took a breath and turned back around, facing the pool, and moved closer to the edge. She was here, and he was going to get an answer out of her one way or another... but he wouldn't mind the chance to get a peek at her beforehand.

At the first sence of movement from above the water, Pheobe shifted around, freezing where she was. She coulden't immediately be spotted, but she could spot him. And when she did, she found the closest jut in one of the rocky cliff-like structures and shot in there, with a large puff of ink.
"What are you doing here, Josh?!"

She held up against the wall in the jut, a few of her green tentacles still poking out in sight. She was huffing tempered breaths, bubbles surfacing from her spot. She was trapped. What could she do? Her mind began to race, just wishing he'd leave... but he surely thought she was in here now...

This was why she had been so reserved at work, this was why she had only given him a 'maybe' at the request of them going out. She was on exile from the ocean. Why was yet to be seen, but she had to keep it a secret... and this... this could blow it, and if he got too curious...
"Oh please leave Josh... please leave... I don't want to have to..."
She shook her head, hoping it woulden't come to that... she'd be giving something up herself...

[Crappy first post. I'll make up for it.]

[woosh!]

There-- motion, underwater. Joshua squatted down, leaning on his heels and squinted, trying to get a sense of what had been down there. Some several seconds passed before it occurred to his conscious mind that she hadn't surfaced. How long can people hold their breath underwater? he wondered, distracted. Pheobe had never mentioned that she'd done any swimming in the past-- but then again, she'd never mentioned that she had an indoor aquarium/pool, either...

He stood and started to walk around the surface to get a better look, and the shifting light gave him a glimpse of something poking above the surface that wasn't seaweed. Joshua tilted his head to the side, puzzled, and then suddenly realized their nature: tentacles. Green tentacles, blending mostly but not completely with the greenery. Maybe she keeps pets?, he mused, frowning, then mentally chided himself for being dumb. This would be a great place for a smart aquatic animals-- he'd heard stories of octopi being kept as pets, and that they were way smarter than their keepers had initially imagined they could possibly be.

"Are you friendly?" he asked the pool quietly, smiling a little bit and beckoning to the pool with one hand. "I don't want to hurt you. Maybe you and I could get to know each other a little better, mmm?..."

She held her breath, but out of simple fear of being discovered, instead of needing to. Further movement, and fair reading of the motion she could tell from her hiding spot told her head had only gotten closer. She recoiled some, but she figured the more she tried to hide, the more he'd get suspicious... and it was already only a matter of time before he got worried, or just curious enough to figure his way in maybe... She slowly uncurled her clutched tentacles and wriggled them a little, just to bide time. She knew there was no way out, but she kept looking for one. As she thought, she worked at calming herself down, and in relaxing, she spread her arms out a bit more, leaving one in sight unknowingly, rested on the rock she sat on as she desperately thought of what to do...

"Cute," Joshua observed wryly-- either the pet could understand him and had a sense of humor, or it was wiggling for wiggles sake, and either way it was impossible to tell. Besides, a better question was 'do octopi and squids and that sort of critter have ears at -all-'?... and either way, ultimately, it didn't matter. He was here for Pheobe.

He clucked his tongue to himself, remembering his objective, and started to stand back up when another flicker of motion caught his eye. He almost dismissed it out of hand, figuring it to be more of the aquarium, but froze in his tracks when it occurred to him that that was no tentacle wafting into sight. That was a hand. That was -Pheobe-'s hand. It was her skin tone, her nails, her fingers-- and it had to have been attached to her... it had been a few minutes now, and she still hadn't come up for air.

"Pheobe?" Joshua said hesitantly, voice cracking with nervousness as he briefly glanced back to those tentacles. Suddenly, they did not seem nearly so benign.
