A midnight black streak rushed through the wood easily dodging through the thick undergrowth. Four black paw dug into the dirt as he rushed along the path he had taken every year, but normally he was another week out in the woods to let his blood cool more from the heat of the mating season. He had never taken a mate merely because there was only one female that he had ever wanted but she was out of his reach. He raced faster crossing a large stream in one bound pleased with the growth he had put on during this summer. His chest had filled out more giving his front legs much greater power then they had before and he looked a great deal larger then when he had left.

Always in the summer he left so that he never pounced on the female he wanted in a fit of heat from the mating season. Ever since they had both turned fourteen he had done this just to allow the cooling of his blood. However this year he returned a week early so that he could travel with her when she left on her journey. He just hoped that he wasnâ??t still too hot and could control himself. Midnight, for that was the name she gave, him rounded the last bend in the path he had made and pulled to a halt in the middle of the glade where they always met after he came back after the summer.

Audrey's dark chestnut hair blew in the wind as she set down her last duffle bag on the grass, where she usually met her companion and pet, Midnight. She was murmuring quietly to herself, checking to see if she had everything. Toothbrush, clothes, underwear, toothpaste, emergency money, she mused in her head. Finally, she turned the knob, checking to see if it was locked, it was. She was ready to go. Since she was a ranger, she didn't stay in one place for too long. And the one place she called home was up north in her cabin, where they were going right now. She ruffled Midnight's soft fur for a moment, and blushed, feeling heat radiate from his body. He would never tell her why he would leave for a week, and then come back, and she just assumed he wanted his freedom. To be with other wolves. She slide her backpack over her arms, wearing a white t-shirt and a pair of army shorts, placing a bottle of water in her duffle bag.

They were preparing the gruelsome walk there. Ugh, she hated this part. They started up the hill, walking north to her cabin. Everytime she brought up driving a car, he had muttered something about how it would be inappropriate for him to a] catch up because he couldn't possibly be in the car and b] it would be inappropriate because it would be suspicious if she kept him as a pet, and he rode with her in the car when he had four perfectly fine legs. So, she had always lost the fight. She sighed, and felt him walk along side her. She didn't know why, but she was kind of more attracted to her pet than she should be. She was surprised how big he had gotten physically over the summer, but he always did. She didn't know why. Sometimes, she imagined that he would do more than curl up at the foot of her bed. She imagined that he would take her as his mate. Did he have a mate? She didn't know, she didn't ask.
