A "Choose Your Own Adventure" Story?

Alright, I've been thinking of writing a story on this site inspired by open-world video games like Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption, Fallout, and the earlier Elder Scrolls games.

It isn't exactly based on any of those games' specific settings, but it is very much inspired by the open-ended story and interactivity those games are famous for.

So, I'm thinking of having it as a "Choose Your Own Adventure" story where every chapter ends with a set of choices the protagonist must make. The readers can PM their preferred choice and whichever choice has the most votes is the one that the protagonist makes.

But to add that extra bit of random chance that open-world gaming is known for, some chapters may also have an element of randomness that can affect the outcome of the story. I'll probably use an online dice roller for that.

Been fleshing out a modern-day setting that at first seems to be a pastiche of Grand Theft Auto and the gangster movie genre, but actually has a lot of horror, occult, and supernatural elements lurking underneath the surface.

There would also be erotic and smutty elements as well, but those scenes are optional and entirely up to choice.

I also want to include a bit of a "survival horror" element to the story as well. One wrong choice can end up killing or injuring the protagonist, and if the protagonist dies, then a new story would begin in that setting with a new protagonist.

Wondering if I can post any "Choose Your Own Adventure" stories on here and where's the best place on here to put them, and is there any potential to this idea?

I'm actually currently doing something similar with a sci-fi setting, so I can answer at least one of your questions there.

Yes - you can post that kind of story. So long as you're not breaking any site rules, as far as I'm aware, any kind of writing style is welcome. As to where... if you're collaborating with a single partner, you can post it it in the normal roleplay section of the site. I confirmed that one with a member of staff before starting my own.

If you're asking anyone and everyone to provide feedback and input, that becomes a bit more tricky. In that case I would suggest the storytelling section of the site.

I think it is possible to do a choose your own adventure rp. It is tricky but it is possible. I did one once years and years ago and it was a lot of fun.

There are publishing companies for digital versions of the old D&D CYOA books. I used to beta test for one. You'll find varying degrees of adult content in them, from kiddish PG stories to "fade to black" to "romance novel" degree of erotica to a hardcore gay wrestling porn interactive fic I beta-tested and advised on.

There's also a place to post and link up interactive fics that caters to adult content. I don't keep track of which RP forums allow posting links to other sites and which ones done, but if you're interested, PM me. I've written 1.5 erotic interactive fictions. On here, I've also advertised for using partner RP as a way to write a CYOA fic, but I didn't get any quality partners. I'm still theoretically open to it.

I don't know if this is permitted or not, but you may be able to use the journal section to tally votes, you can even set up a poll in it. If not a journal, then storytelling has access to polls too I think and that way people can vote anonymously without having to PM you. Might be worth a look, but check with staff first to be safe. Hope this goes well because it's certainly an interesting concept.

I've done similar things in the past on different sites. I'd recommend presenting specific choices to be voted on in a poll right away, rather than asking for people to PM you suggestions. Leaving it open ended makes it too challenging to tally votes, and people are less likely to engage if they have to come up with their own suggestion and PM you. People are much more likely to participate in a poll.

This. If you put this in a poll, I'll vote almost every single time as soon as I see it, but I'm unlikely to PM anybody about it unless I'm the one writing the story with them. Just how it is, I think most are the same.

I wonder if you can post it to story telling. The polls can be used or you could encourage readers to put a small reply after the first post. A day and time can be set, depending on how many choices you have and what not ... also rate of storytelling and writing too!!! Don't burn yourself out, remember to take breaks!
