Eliseabella, though, better known as Elise, followed the waiter to her seat. It was a nice, quaint little coffee shop, but what pleased her the most, it was very, very, public. She was led to the open-air porch, where an assortment of tables and chairs were placed under a fancy umbrella for comfort. Several of the tables around her were already occupied by other customers who casually spoke to their companions as they sipped at their beverages. Good, the more people around her, the less likely it would be this little meet-up of hers would go wrong. At least, that’s what she was hoping. Who knew how many Alphas surrounded her now, and not many Alphas had the ability to compose themselves from an Omega’s heat. Though, her last heat had passed not long ago. So, the likelihood of another coming so soon was very low. Still, she couldn’t risk anything to chance.

Not today of all days.

Once seated, Elise ordered her coffee ahead of time, not caring to wait for her companion to get here first. Her gaze drifted to the table, falling upon the manila folder that had started it all, examining the picture pinned to the front for the hundredth time. Seth. Her pair designated by the Government and her soon to be husband. It was how things worked these days, the Government would pair two people up, based on their DNA compatibility, and arrange them to be married. Once someone had their pair, that was it, any other relationship they may currently be in didn’t matter, they were now expected to devote themselves to their paired partner. And now, after years of avoiding it, here she was, paired to another and not only anyone, but an Alpha at that.

An Omega being paired to an Alpha was an honor. Alphas were at the top, while Omegas were primarily at the bottom, looked down upon by both Alphas and Betas. If an Omega could pair with an Alpha, the Omega would never have to worry about discrimination, work, or anything really. Most would kill to be in her position. Still, Elise didn’t feel this way. Alphas were cruel. Betas weren’t much better. She knew once she got married, others would leave her alone and she would be alright financially, however, expected nothing more than the Alpha she was marrying to try to control everything about her. It wasn’t ideal.

Just being an Omega wasn’t Ideal…

It was odd. Judging by the information provided about Seth. The two didn’t seem all that compatible. He was successful, wealthy, and a powerful man in society. While, Elise lived a relatively normal life, per say. She was the youngest daughter of three, having two older Beta brothers. Her mother an Omega while her father, Beta. They weren’t all that well off financially, but her father worked hard to feed his children. When Elise’s first heat hit, she was sixteen. Her mother died from illness a year later, so Elise never really got the chance to learn how to deal with her heat from her Omega mother, had to learn as things went on. She tried dating, mostly Betas, but even they had a hard time when her heat hit. After a while, she just stopped, knowing it was futile to get attracted to anyone anyways since she would be paired soon.

Still, it was the hand she was dealt and just because she was an Omega, Elise had no intentions of bending over backward for anyone, Betas or Alphas alike. She didn’t know much about her husband other than his face, name, and the information provided in this folder. Which wasn’t much other than his work background and family history. That told her nothing about the person he was. Well, today was their first greeting, she will soon get a taste of his personality when he gets here.

The waiter coming into view distracted her from her thoughts. She thanked him as he placed her iced latte before her. Sighing, Elise grabbed her bag, popping one of her suppressants in her mouth before she sipped on the brew, leaning back in her chair, taking one last glance at the picture before shoving the folder forward.

The more time that passed, the more anxious Elise grew. It couldn’t have been but less than ten minutes since she had arrived—and she had arrived early—and her nerves were already buzzing. It took all she had to stop the constant dance of her foot under the table, having to distract her mind to keep her foot from tapping away. The worst part of it all was she had no idea what to expect from this, other than a picture and a few vague details, she had no idea who would be coming to meet her today, no idea who she would be spending the rest of her life with. This was terrifying in a way, but most of all, it just pissed her off. Couldn’t the damn government have given her something more to go off of? At least given them a few options to choose from after meeting the person at least once. This whole chosen based on genetic compatibility was just bull shit in her opinion. How can someone really be compatible based on their DNA? Who knows, perhaps it was a good thing, and this was just the nerves talking.

Soon, a subtle, but distinct smell of pine and musk caught the wind, instantly catching her attention. It was pleasantly relaxing yet brought thrilling chills through her body and she was instantly drawn to it. Just as Elise shifted in her seat to glance over her shoulder to try to find the object of the scent, a man came into view, seating himself across her, her eyes hitting his chest as the gentle smell of pine and musk filled the air.

Hi…

Finally, her eyes caught his. The moment their eyes locked Elise felt an overwhelming heat rush through her veins. The mixture of lavender and fresh rain began to subtly flow from her. If she hadn’t taken that suppressant not long ago, she might have been in a lot of trouble right now. She had heard of something like this before. True mates. But, that couldn’t be right. Not to someone like him, not to an alpha. Still, this feeling within her was undeniable. It was instantaneous. It was irresistible. It was as if she knew she had to be with him, she needed Seth Talbott. When he spoke, it finally allowed her to gather her thoughts, distracting her from the sensations running through her body.

So, uh, I’m pretty sure you already know, but I’m Seth. Seth Talbott. And—I guess you’re stuck with me.

Clearing her throat, she chuckled awkwardly. “Ah, yeah. So it seems.” Though she tried not to sound displeased about it, it wasn’t much of a success. “Well, as I’m sure you know, I’m Elise. Uh… Eliseabella Delione if you want to get technical.” Gesturing to her latte, she spoke again. “I apologize for not waiting for you to order. But, their coffee here is actually pretty good, you should get a drink while we uh…” She paused, not really sure what they were doing exactly. “Talk?”

Taking a brief moment, her eyes scanned him as she sipped her coffee. He was just as handsome as the picture had shown—if not more—as most alphas seemed to be, if it wasn’t for their bad personalities, she might had felt really lucky right now. Alpha radiated from his pores. From his posture to the jewelry and nice clothes he wore, his very stare spoke alpha to her. Part of her was relieved she decided to actually dress nice today, one of the few articles of clothing that could actually be worn in a nice place. Honestly, Elise preferred the more comfortable style. Biting her bottom lip—a nervous little tick of hers—Elise leaned back in her seat, crossing her leg over the other. Her body still felt like it was caught in flames, maybe something was just wrong with her? They couldn’t be true mates. It was so rare that it was almost impossible. Then, why was it so hard to be around him?

Finally, she forced herself to avert her gaze, needing some sort of release from the sensations running through her body, scanning the bodies that passed by. “So, now that we have met, what now?” Her gaze returned to his, just briefly before dropping to the manila folder on the table before chuckling. “I can’t say I’ve ever done this before.”
