Alright, thank you for clicking on this already!

If you finish reading this I would encourage you to answer, even if just giving a 'yay' or 'nay'. Your answer might just influence what you get to read soon...so make sure to drop a vote ;)

Anyway, I wondered about how to design my request thread.

Question;

Do you prefer reading/watching a request thread which is visual heavy?

Meaning; plots/pairings and whatever is portrayed by an image of said interest.

Would it make it more fun and understandible? Do you think it is a chore to watch and try and understand what they mean?

Also, if you vote pro visuals, do you prefer NSFW or more 'innocent' ones?

Already much thanks to you all!
Lady (my nickname ;))

I highly prefer ones that aren't visual heavy, actually. Too many pictures or bells and whistles distract me from what I'm really there for: the plot. If the plots/pairings are accompanied by images, I don't mind them (though I do prefer images be linked and not embedded, as I occasionally browse at work) but if everything is image-heavy, I tend to be a bit overwhelmed.
My favorite types of request threads have clear indications of what I can find in each section without being too abstract. For instance, headers to separate "Rules" from "Ideas" from "Kinks" are nice, because then I can easily skip to each section and see if I have compatibility with that person.

THANK YOU! I will take it into consideration and use your heading tip once I'm able to work out more on my actual thread!

I'm also on primarily at work. It's boring but in an open office *cringe*, so I even have images disabled on this and similar sites. I need a text-only hobby. In terms of sentiment, an image of a couple gives me the impression that a RT is looking for that exact kind of character, and they usually don't line up with the types I create. I know it's not logical, but it happens.

I like seeing pics of just others' characters as it gives me a good idea of what I might be playing off of.

In the end, I'd likely click off an image-dependant thread pretty quickly.

I like a RT without all the visuals. I just want to see whether or not it has something I find interesting not an explosion of pictures otherwise I'm inclined to pass it over.

Personally I'd say both is fine.

Kind of a generalization, but I do feel at a glance that a visual heavy description means that the person took their time to do some digging to convey what they really meant by their words, which in my books mean that they put more effort into it. Of course, I understand the nuance of words, which is why I said both is fine.

There's several things that I prefer to have images of, namely character's face, general atmosphere of a settings, and appearance/outfit, both from someone and me personally. Reason is, if you have a specific face that you want your character to have, and want to convey to your partner, it's preferable for me to have faceclaims and the sort, because there's so much that words can do for describing faces. For appearance/outfit, to be perfectly honest, it's quite easier to just show what you meant, than give detailed description of said outift. An image conveys a thousand words they say.

Lastly, general atmosphere of a settings is preferably given images as well, because for me at least, I want both of us (me and my partner) to have the same idea of the atmosphere. This is mainly because of definition of words, and the image it brings to people, carries different connotation. 'A bleak dystopian city' can either mean a grim Bladerunner style city, or an oppresive Equilibrium style city, and a picture immediately clears up the intention of the OP, because perhaps one person is interested in a bleak dystopian city, but more on the one side than the other.

By the end of the day, it's more onto the decision of whether or not you're too lazy to write or read something, because a picture immediately shows what you meant, while text description is inbetween your wall of text and can be misinterpreted.

Nothing you can't fix with a little conversation, but you know, I like to see what's inside someone's mind when they picture something.

As RP is about writing I want to know the person can actually express themselves in writing. Also visuals are very subjective. For example everyone has their own idea of what the Girl Next Door looks like, so if you were to post pictures of what you think she is looks like, you could just be alienating people. Descriptions of characters are far better as it allows more wiggle room for the reader. Links to porn also put me off.

Pics as a supplement would be nice, but by no means should the RT depend on them. Having the pics as concept food and scenario prompts is a decent idea and I'd dig being asked to make scenarios out of them, but again, shouldn't be a dependency. I don't mind NSFW visuals myself, although again, a thread where that is a significant part of the substance is going to give me the wrong impression pretty quickly.

I feel like I'm one of the very few actually in love with visuals in general hihi

There's a good number who are, and I do actually appreciate them if tactfully integrated and not splashed all over the page. Links for the most part would be nifty.

Visuals is fine, but it became a problem when you dictates that everything needs visuals.

RP is about imagining the scene, just like you would on a novel. It has different draws then say, comic books, so it is understandable that most people who RPs prefers less picture.

I love visuals for outfits, but then I really love fussing over outfit choices (and having others pick some or take advantage of said choices when they like). I can usually kind of describe them, or faces, but I do agree that if you want to share a particular one and work with it in detail or repeatedly, it can be hard to get that just so in words.

On the other hand, when it comes to things like speech or gestures I don't think I could ever find enough pictures to convey how people act. (Once in a while a very inspiring gif, but I don't usually want too many gifs in the same space - lots of movement is harder, I think to match with other images.) Sometimes one, or a few pictures in a set or a "profile" style inspire me about mannerisms and it runs on forever with that character. But even that's sort of rare.

I do like setting pictures, but I seem to have a terrible time finding ones that really satisfy me. I have been through sooo many apartment shots online, for example and only find a few rooms that are that "exciting" story-wise from them all. I want not only an emotionally interesting shot, but one with light or angles that have something of the mood I want in a story (which is often just a bit surreal, just slightly off-genre, or more dark)... Same with nature scenery or panoramas. So I do enjoy some setting imagery too, but I'm not very good at actually finding and grouping these.

Well these days usually the only responses I get to my RTs are "I really like your pictures!", so there's that.

With visuals (face claims and the likes), I always feel that there is little to nothing for me to be left to my imagination. If a face-claim is insisted on, I never reply to a request thread. And in the same breath, I never require a certain type of girl to be written. There is beauty in all and I love to be surprised with what a female comes up with.

don't even ask me about visual heavy threads. reminds me of another forum in which literally every thread was filled with 500 lines of bbcode and images which distracted from the writing. was the writing good? was it plain? i couldn't tell. the worst part was where people would use basically 1 pixel text and also due to the overuse of them, if yours didn't have any you were basically ignored. then again, that forum was pretty cliquey.

thankfully from what i seen, most folks don't seem to be going overboard in terms of making their threads fancy. i don't mind when people decorate their threads but i do prefer just simple text because the deep end of the latter option just gives me terrible memories.
