She softened too when his tone changed. At least he could admit that at times he had little to no patience. It was easier for him to just admit that than for her to have to try to figure that out over time. Everyone had faults, she knew that. She knew her husband would have faults too. She expected him to, it was one of the reasons she'd used to convince herself that she would hate him no matter what he said or did.
