I have found myself in a bit of a book rut. Reading is one of my favorite past times and lately it's been my calm. I'm optimistic there are some readers on here that could recommend a good book.

I personally like books that give whiplash with cunning plot twists, dark romances, and thick plotlines ... but I'm open to new genres especially if they've changed your life in some way.

I have no limits or triggers, and I figured it'd be a fun idea to have a thread with everyone's book recommendations.
Bonus points if they're on Kindle Unlimited!

Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir, book one of the Locked Tomb series. The follow up book will turn the first completely on its head and makes it even better. Still haven't read the third one.

Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe, it's got a lot of things going on. Not sure how dark the romance is; but it hits all the other beats.

I have not even heard of either of these, and I'm so excited to have them added to my TBR list! :) I appreciate you!

A favourite of mine is The Belgariad series by David Eddings. 5 books, solid in plot, easy to read, good mix of drama and humour. I always go back to it.

Another good read is The Saga of the Exiles by Julian May. 4 books, interesting story and premise, a bit darker and heavier than the Belgariad.

How long have you got? This is quite literally what I do. Most of these are fantasy or urban fantasy:

Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey (is on KU I believe)
Godkiller by Hannah Kaner
Any book by Tamora Pierce
Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne (first is Hounded)
The Last Shield by Cameron Johnston
To Cage a God by Elizabeth May
Dresden Files by Jim Butcher
When the Moon Hatched by Sarah A. Parker

For KU specifically, I've been going through some recently:

Vengeful Gods by Elliott Rose (Modern, very dark romance)
The Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent
On Wings of Blood by Briar Boleyn
Assassin's Honor by Gail Z Martin

  • The Children of Hรบrin
Apart from the Silmarillion, I think this book is actually J.R.R. Tolkiens hidden magnum opus. I've never enjoyed reading a book more than this book.
  • Torak and Wolf
Not sure this counts; it's a YA novel sort of... but I really liked it, it was quite good.
  • Viking trilogy
Not quite a YA novel but sort of? It's a historical but fictional retelling of multiple vikingr saga's.
  • Healing from Hate
It's less of a fun book, more educational, but I really enjoyed it. It's about qualitative research into extremist groups.

I'm more of a science fiction and fantasy buff, so I know my tastes won't be for everyone.
  • Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton
  • Devolution by Max Brooks
  • The Hobbit & The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien
  • Fatalis by Jeff Ronin
  • Monster Hunter International by Larry Correia
  • Carnosaur by Harry Adam Knight
