Evie had guessed right. Angelo had taken Gina to a spot not far from the fountain. He was holding her captive there waiting for Guido to arrive. Vito & Carlo were also on their way. They were slightly ahead of Evie & Tom, having left the bar just before they arrived. Gina felt betrayed and foolish for letting Angelo trick her into believing he loved her. She was currently standing beside Angelo with a pistol buried into her back. Guido arrived and found Angelo quickly. He demanded to know what this was all about. Angelo laughed while saying it was all about revenge. Revenge for what the Vendetti Family had done to Angelo's Family. Angelo said that since the Vendetti Family had taken away his family's power within the criminal underworld. The Moratti's would see that the Vendetti's paid by losing everything they had, including their lives. This infuriated Guido, he started taking steps towards Angelo. His forward movements were stopped when Angelo said Gina would die if Guido took another step. This brought Guido to a halt, but it didn't change the expression on his face. Guido was clearly pissed off. Soon Vito & Carlo appeared looking quite pleased with how things turned out. Vito believed his men had taken care of Tom and perhaps Evie as well.

Vito moved up and forced Guido down too his knees. He placed a gun at Guido's head. " This is going to be the sweetest kill of them all......And it's mine. " Vito's voice carried a tone of victory as he spoke. His brother stood a few feet behind and just to the right of Vito. Angelo forced Gina down on the ground. She was also on her knees and facing Guido. Angelo said how much he enjoyed using Gina, but not in a sexual way. His pleasure came from setting her and her family up for death. Angelo spoke of the rest of the family following Guido & Gina later on. It would be easy for Angelo and his family to get inside the restaurant and killing the remaining Vendetti family members. Evie & Tom were only moments away at this time. Their arrival would throw a monkey wrench into the plans of Vito and his murderous plans.

Evie was lucky with the traffic. They made it to Central Park with few hold ups. She took the car into the Park and then headed towards the Fountain. Tom saw Vito with Guido on his knees a few feet away before the car had come to a halt and he was half way out of the vehicle before Evie had bought the car to a stop about a 100yards away. Evie took the back up role as usual, following Tom's lead. Both of them had their weapons drawn but they kept them down and at their side. If Vito saw them when they were still some distance away, they didn't want any hasty reactions. Tom and Evie quickly marked out Vito and Carlo and then there was Angelo. Evie guessed Angelo wasn't carrying. Why have a dog and bark yourself. Vito and Carlo were different she guessed.

Fortunately in many ways, there was no-one close by and in truth they were some distance away. That meant the it was sooner rather than later that they were seen. They raised their weapons slowly and Tom told Angelo that he was done.

Tom & Evie came in from behind Angelo who was holding Gina and had a gun buried in her back. Vito & Carlo were busy watching Guido and gloating over their victory. It seemed assured that the Moratti would finally have it's revenge over the hated Vendetti's. This changed when Tom & Evie arrived and closed in. Angelo's face went pale when he heard Tom's voice coming from behind. Tom spoke loud enough for Angelo too hear, but Vito & Carlo hadn't caught on. Suddenly, Angelo felt a gun being placed just behind his left ear. Angelo heard Tom whisper that Gina could survive as gunshot wound to the back, but he couldn't survive one to his head. Tom motioned for Evie to step more left of where he was with Angelo & Gina. He wanted Evie to have a clear shot at Vito who was the only other one with a gun out. It was possible that Carlo was packing some heat, but if he was, he wasn't ready to pull it. Tom waited for Evie to position herself. He then called out to Vito. He told Vito that it was all over. Tom said the NYPD would be on their way, if they weren't ready. Vito looked over quickly at Tom standing there. He could see the gun pressed against his only son's head. " It's over when I say it is cop......Drop your gun now or Guido gets a bullet. " Vito felt pretty confident on how this would play out. He then realized Evie was standing off to the side and her weapons was pointed at him. Tom warned Carlo not to make any sudden moves. He added that a lot of shooting would happen if he did. Carlo looked over at a determined looking Evie.

Tom told Vito the same thing he just said too Angelo. That was, Angelo wouldn't survive a gunshot wound to the head, but Gina would survive. Vito remarked about this being a Mexican standoff. Tom agreed, but added that he & Evie were from Los Angeles and they were often involved with these. He also said that since they were still around, they always won. Tom then pulled back the hammer of his pistol. The click made Angelo jump slightly. He started to shake like a leaf in a wind storm. Angelo began pleading with his father not to let him die. Vito growled out for Angelo to grow a set of balls and act like a man. Tom then said he was going to count to three. He told Evie to shot Vito on the three count. " I......2......" Tom started to count, then everything seemed to play out in slow motion. Vito jerked his gun away from Guido's head. He turned towards Evie hoping to get off the first shot. Guido dropped to the ground and at the same moment, so did Gina. Tom kicked Angelo in the back of his leg, this took him down. He then aimed his pistol at Vito. Carlo held his hands up showing he had no gun. Then two shots rang out.

Evie stared at Vito, the Glock easy in her hand but trained directly on him. It took a few fractions of a second for her brain to register that he was moving; that he was swinging his arm up, changing the direction of his aim, selecting another target. Evie fractionally adjusted her aim and squeezed the trigger. Once. She heard a second shot and braced herself for the impact imagining that Vito had gotten a shot off either just before or immediately after her bullet hit his shoulder. But nothing happened. There was no impact. No pain. And Vito was down. She looked across at Tom. The second shot had come from him. Tom had taken Vito in the leg, shattering his thigh bone. Vito was on the floor in serious pain. Guido was up and was holding Gina whilst Angelo and Carlo were on their knees with their hands up.

It was a good job that the NYPD were not that far away. Neither Tom nor Evie had cuffs with them. They both took our their badges though and held them up in their left hands as a swarm of New York cops descended on them with guns drawn and all pointed at the two of them. There was some shouting but only when Angelo and Carlo were in custody did they both put their guns down. Evie stood quietly as they check out her ID and then eventually handed her back her badge and gun. When she had packed both away, she looked up and met the gaze of Detective Luca. He was clearly confused. Evie just smiled and said nothing to him. She turned to Tom.

"Can we go home now please."

Detective Luca was just a little upset with Tom. He wasn't keen on Tom's nosing around a case which Luca was working on. Luca asked if Tom thought he was "Dirty Harry?" Detective Luca then made threats of dragging Tom, Evie and Alyssa down to the station. Luca was sure Alyssa had snooped around his desk while Tom kept him busy. He also thought that Evie had the fact that she was a cop, just for spite. Luca believed she should have identified herself as a police officer when he questioned her. Despite Luca's rants, Tom was able to claim him down. He pointed that the NYPD had done their jobs. They were just steps behind Tom & Evie the whole day. Tom said Luca and those working under him were a credit too the NYPD. He laid it on pretty thick, but Tom felt this was needed. Luca heard Evie when she asked about leaving. He looked at her before turning his eyes towards Tom. " The quicker you two can get out of New York.....The better I'll feel. " Luca said before walking away.

Tom put his arm around Evie as they started walking towards their car. "We can catch a flight home in the morning. " Tom said while he & Evie joined up with Guido & Gina. The wedding was off, but the family returned to the restaurant. Tom announced that the killings were over with. He said Vito, Carlo, Angelo & Carmine would be spending a long time behind bars. Tom's news was broken when a figure appeared just behind him. The man looked around and waved to everyone. They all started to laugh because Tom had no idea what was happening. He slowly turned around too see his dad, Rick Reed standing there holding a wedding gift in his hand. Rick asked if he missed the wedding? Tom told his father that he missed a lot. Everyone sat down for dinner and a chance to relax after the last few days. The next morning, Tom, Evie & Alyssa were heading home. Rick decided to stay in New York a while longer. It had been ages since he last ran wild with Guido. Tom, Evie & Alyssa said their goodbyes then boarded a plane before heading for home.

Evie was glad to be going home. New York had not bee the relaxing break she had imagined... more of a busman's holiday. When they landed, it was late on Friday afternoon. They got a cab back to the boat and then called around to let people know they were home and to catch up on what they'd missed. Whilst Tom was talking to Jack and telling him the whole story, Evie went and took a long relaxing shower. She got out, dried off and slipped on one of Tom's t-shirts. By the time she got back upstairs, Tom had finished his called, opened a bottle wine and ordered a chinese take out to be delivered. He was sitting on the couch watching the news. She sat next to him and picked up her glass. She leaned into him.

"Shower's all yours. Don't be long." Tom look at her as they kissed.

"Hungry?"

"Definitely." Tom smiled and then eased himself off the couch to go and get cleaned up himself.

The Major Crimes Unit had been very busy chasing former Russian agents. Even during what should have been a happy time and a small vacation turned into another day on the job for Evie & Tom. They hadn't been the only ones working hard during this time. Damien Kane was working very hard to build his empire. Using one of his company's as a cover, Kane was buying, bullying, or down right stealing smaller companies from their owners. Kane was becoming a little too greedy for his own good and it hadn't gone unnoticed. One, trusted employee began working against Kane. This person felt the boss had lost sight of how things should be run. It was decided that Kane needed to be brought down, but it should be done by someone else inside the company. As fortune would have it, there was someone within Kane Corp who fit what was needed. She was a lawyer who just happened to be friends with Evie Taylor of the MCU. Her name is Rachel McFarlane, who went to college with Evie back in New Jersey before following her west to Los Angeles. The two women had reconnected once Rachel arrived in town. They had been staying in touch ever since. About once a week, the two women had lunch together. It was during one of these lunches when Rachel started hinting at some wrong doings by the company she worked for. Rachel never went into great detail, but said she would fill Evie in once the time was right.

Rachel had spoke of someone within the company feeding her inside information on the dirty dealings done by a company known as International Redevelopment Incorporated. This was the company which Damien Kane was using to take whatever other businesses he wanted. Rachel was saving all the information given too her by the insider as she ended up calling this person. The information included text on personal phone calls made by Damien Kane. These phone calls were listened in on by a computer which would copy down everything said by both parties. Kane was hanging himself and he didn't even know it. Rachel told Evie that very soon she'd have everything needed to bring down a very powerful businessman in LA. Once enough evidence was gathered, Rachel planned on handing over the file she made too Evie so the MCU could act on it and make arrests. Rachel never once spoke the name Damien Kane too Evie, but it wasn't hard for Evie to figure out who Rachel was talking about since her friend worked for the powerful Kane.

The wheels for Kane's downfall started when he decided to muscle out the competition in the local trucking business. Kane already owned Cal Tran, a large company which transported goods all over the Western United States by truck. His greed pushed him to steal another company called 5-Star Trucking which was one of Southern California major haulers. Controlling 75% of the transfer of goods around the LA area wasn't good enough for Kane. He wanted it all. Kane set his sights on a small family trucking operation run by Carl "Tucker" Pappas, an old high school friend of Tom Reed. Tucker started Pappas Trucking many years ago to support his family. In time, Tucker's son Tim and his daughter Mary joined the company. The Pappas family made a pretty good living at hauling goods around the LA and Southern California area. They even got runs which took them as far north as Portland, Oregon and as far east as Phoenix, Arizona. That was when times were good, times however had changed. Tucker was under pressure to sell his trucks to 5-Star and it's head man Alan Tanner. Every offer made by Tanner was turned down. This only brought trouble. Tucker soon found his trucks were having unexplained problems. Dirty & sugar was often found in the fuel tanks. Lug nuts were stripped to the point where tires would come off while the trucks were in motion. Loads of vegetables & fruits were being ruined when refrigerator units were sabotages. Tucker was on the verge bankruptcy, but he still refused to give in. At the urging of his children, Tucker finally decided to speak with the police. Tucker spoke with detectives in the Commercial Crimes Division, but he was told an investigation would be slow in starting. The CCD was swamped with other cases and their manpower was low. Tucker decided not to wait on them. He needed action and he needed it now, or everything would be lost. Tucker decided that he needed to speak with Tom Reed.

It was a Tuesday morning when Tucker paid a visit to the MCU Squad room. Tucker had met Evie a few times over the years since she & Tom got together. This was his first time meeting James & Kim though. Tom called everyone into his office for this meeting. Tucker sat there in front of Tom's desk as he told of his troubles and the pressure being laid on him by 5-Star & Alan Tanner. He spoke of having been to the CCD and told how he needed to wait on them. Tucker said he had little time left. His company was on the edge and it could be lost at anytime. Currently, the MCU wasn't working on anything big. Tom thought he and his team could take on this case. It sounded like it could have mob ties. The MO was certainly similar to past mob activities. The uses of muscle and pressure to get what was wanted. It was right out of the mob handbook. Tom asked Kim to run a check on 5-Star Trucking too see what she could find. He then asked James to run a background check on Alan Tanner. Tom wanted everything from the man's past. His life history, bank records, anything James could get his hands on. Tom told Tucker they would do their best to help him. After a handshake, Tucker left. Tom turned to Evie who was always deep in thought at times like this. " What's going through that pretty head of yours? " Tom asked while leaning back into his chair. He was sure Evie would have something to add.

Evie looked up at Tom. She had listened to what Tucker had said without saying anything. But it reminded her if a few things she had heard from her friend over the last few months.

"I don't know. It might be nothing." Tom stood looking back at her waiting for more. Evie hadn't been intending to say anything else and then she saw Tom looking at her.

"Like I say, it might be nothing." She stood up. "For the last few months Rachel has been talking about a company called International Redevelopment Incorporated. How it had taken over a trucking company called Cal-Tran and then another called 5-Star Trucking. If 5-star trucking are looking to take over Pappas Trucking, logic said that could link back to international redevelopment incorporated. She said.... Once she has enough evidence she is going to hand it over to us.... And take down some business giant. Not hard to guess who she might be talking about? Maybe I should call her. See if she's free for lunch today?"

Tom trusted Evie's gut feelings. She always raised interesting questions after these meetings. Food for thought as one may say. Evie's private input was more then just food on this day, it was like a buffet. She had linked 5-Star Trucking to Cal-Tran to a redevelopment business. Thanks to her lunches with Rachel. It was all linking together like a huge chain. The big questions were. How far back did this chain reach and who was the last link of the chain? " Damien Kane? " Tom said softly as he slowly sat down on his desk. This was the man Rachel worked for. Could LA's Mr. Clean businessman of the year be secretly stealing companies and forcing their rightful owners out of work? If this was true and Rachel was gathering evidence on her boss, she was playing a dangerous game. Powerful men like Kane don't take snoopers in their business affairs lightly. Tom agreed that Evie should see if Rachel was free for lunch. Perhaps she could shed some light on 5-Star Trucking and Alan Tanner who ran that company. Tanner would be just another pawn too Damien Kane. A figure head put into a position of power. Not unlike Frank Leeds whom was busted by the MCU along with Paul Butler a while back. Leeds & Butler had been involved with the arson case the MCU investigated. Tom asked Evie to run a background check on the International Redevelopment Incorporated. See who was currently running that group and who owned it. These days, one big operation was run by another. No matter how large most companies were, they were owned by someone even larger.

Tom decided to make a few phone calls of his own. He called the CHP and the LA County Sheriff's office for reports on accidents involving trucks owned by Tucker Pappas. Tom wanted too see what the investigators on those accidents had too say. He then placed a number of calls in the hopes of tracking down an old truck driving buddy. Someone who could just give an insider's view into what was going on with 5-Star and Cal-Tran. Tom left word for his friend to meet for dinner at a truck stop called County Comfort.

Evie nodded and returned to her desk. She started typing away on her computer searching various databases that were either law enforcement owned/created or which were easily accessible by law enforcement. She started as Tom had suggested with International Redevelopment Incorporated and the Registry of Companies. This gave her basic information around the registered office, its public accounts and its shareholders, the main one being Damien Kane.. or at least the Kane Corporation. But International Redevelopment Incorporated didn't seem to do anything. It didn't make anything. It didn't sell anything. It was a nothing more than a shell; a holding company. In the last twelve months, International Redevelopment Industries had bought Cal-Tran and 5-Star Trucking. There was a clear linking between Tom's friend and Damien Kane - on paper at least. The Kane Corporation owned shares in a lot of businesses; it didn't mean that he knew what they were doing. The Register also told Evie that the International Redevelopment Incorporated was run by a man named Daniel Knox. She ran Knox's name through the police data bases - state and federal. It didn't take long before her screen was giving her lots of information courtesy of the FBI database. Loan sharking, illegal gambling, drugs and prostitution. Suspicion. Speculation. Some evidence but a lot of it circumstantial. There were no convictions, not even any charges which suggested that the evidence simply wasn't strong enough even to start any criminal proceedings. So either the FBI were on the wrong track or Knox was good at covering his tracks... or having his tracks covered for him. Buried in the 'Known Associates' section of the electronic file was a name Evie recognised. Alan Tanner. So Evie could link - albeit in a way which was based on suspicion rather than evidence - Tanner to Knox to Kane. Things certainly didn't look too good for Tucker Pappas.

Evie looked across to Tom's office and saw that he was on the phone so before taking what she had found in to him, she made a call of her own to her friend Rachel. They passed a few pleasantries and then Evie asked if she was free to meet for lunch sometime soon. They agreed to meet at the end of the week - two days time. With the call finished, Evie took what she had found into Tom and laid out the links for him. Tom then filled her in on his calls and said that he was taking her for dinner.

The CHP & the LA County Sheriff's office said they'd send Tom the reports he wanted. He hoped there was something in there that could be a missed clue. Evie soon entered Tom's office and told him hat she found. What she uncovered maybe circumstantial, but it was a start and gave them an idea of what kind of people they were dealing with. It sure did seem like a mob type of operation going on. All they needed to do was link it all back to the top dog, which in this case could be LA's top businessman. It wasn't long before the accident reports arrived by email. Both the CHP & sheriff's department sent links to where their reports could be found. Tom & his team spent the bulk of their day combing over each and every report. All the reports pointed towards a mechanical failure as the cause. On the surface, and looked at each one individually. The accidents all seemed to be just that. But, when you looked at them as a whole and add in the fact that it was happening to the same family. It all seemed out of the ordinary. Tom & Evie ended their day, headed home for a quick shower and change of clothes, before they headed for the Country Comfort.

Tom hadn't told Evie where they were having dinner that night. He wanted to keep it a surprise for her. Plus, Tom wasn't sure how Evie would take eating at a truck stop. It wasn't a normal place for them to go, but the food was good. Using Evie's mustang, they headed west, acrossed the city. Just outside the city limits, on the highway heading for Victorville, stood the Country Comfort. A huge truck stop which featured not only a restaurant, but also a bar, showers, laundry mat, movie theater, gym and hot tubs. During the drive, Tom just told Evie where too go. It wasn't until he told her to turn into the County Comfort that it became clear they were eating at a truck stop. Tom said they were meeting an old friend of his named BJ McKay. Although the place catered to truck drivers, it was also a stop for travelers on the highways. After parking, Tom & Evie walked into the restaurant. They found a table and sat down. The waitress came over, dropped off a couple of menus and took an order for some coffee. Tom looked at his watch while saying BJ should be arriving soon. The waitress brought two cups of coffee over, placing them down. Moments later, a tall, handsome man walked into the restaurant carrying a chimpanzee dressed in clothing. He looked around before spotting where Tom was sitting. The man moved towards the table and was greeted by the waitress. She identified the man as BJ McKay. Tom looked up with a smile. He rose from his seat and shook BJ's hand. Tom then introduced BJ to Evie before BJ introduced her to the chimpanzee named Bear.

Evie was dressed in her blue jeans, black boots, a blue deep v-neck Yankees t-shirt and her black leather jacket. She didn't know where they were heading exactly but Tom had at least told her that she should dress casual. She drove through the City following Tom's instructions, dying to know where they were going but not giving Tom the satisfaction of begging. When she turned into the car part of the County Comfort and pulled into one of the parking spaces, she looked across to him as she pulled on the parking break.

"Wow. You really know how to show a girl a good time don't you? Really pushing the boat out." Tom smiled but said nothing as he climbed out of the car and closed the door. He met Evie at the front of the hood as she followed suit and locked up, slipping the keys into her pocket. The two of them walked into the restaurant and sat down at a booth next to the window which overlooked the carpark. Evie slipped off her jacket at put in on the seat next to her. She let Tom order coffee and then tell her that someone called BJ shouldn't be to long. When he did, she could't hide her surprise. It wasn't everyday that she came across someone who walked around with the dressed chimp. She nodded a hello to BJ and shook his offered hand and then was a little surprised when the chimp held its hand out also. She laughed and took it.

"Pleased to meet you... Bear."

BJ McKay was a long haul trucker by trade. He was original from Milwaukee, Wisconsin and went by the handle the Milwaukee Kid on the CB. His rig was a red with a white stripe Kenworth. BJ was the type who often ran afoul with crooked lawman. In all his years, BJ found only a few whom he called friend. Tom was one of those few. They met a few years ago, in between the time when Jack moved up to Narcotics and Evie became Tom's partner. BJ helped Tom on a case which involved the death of a fellow truck driver. BJ put Bear down on the seat. The waitress came over with another cup of coffee for BJ and a can of beer for bear. Everyone placed an order for dinner. Once the waitress left, BJ asked why Tom needed to speak with him. Tom started to tell BJ about the troubles Tucker Pappas was having. BJ knew Tucker and his family. They often crossed paths when BJ was in California. Like Tucker, BJ was an independent trucker. Choosing to work for himself instead of a company. Unlike Tucker, BJ hauled all over the country. One day he could be off to Dallas, New Orleans, Chicago, just about anywhere. BJ had seen more of America then most regular people do. It was a life style which he enjoyed. Free to roam from coast to coast without being tied down to any one area.

Tom continued to tell BJ of Tucker's troubles. He told BJ that Tucker had said 5 Star Trucking was behind it. BJ just smile while shaking his head. He spoke of having more then a few run ins with the goons from 5 Star and from Cal Tran. BJ didn't call them truckers, or drivers, he said goons. He spoke of them being paid thugs who harass independent drivers whenever and where ever they can. BJ spoke of one of the goons, a man known over the CB as Hammer. Tall, strong and mean as a snake is how BJ described Hammer. He's the type of guy who takes what he wants, BJ added. BJ said Hammer has worked for both 5 Star & Cal Tran in the past. Pretty much where ever muscle is needed, Hammer will be there. Tom then asked BJ what he knew about a man named Alan Tanner? " Word is that Tanner works for Damien Kane who owns Cal Tran. " BJ said in a hushed tone. He also added that Kane wasn't as squeaky clean as he appeared to be. BJ said Kane was behind an aggressive take over of 5 Star, but sadly, there was no proof. He spoke of Kane covering his tracks. The waitress returned with the food and everyone started to eat. The conversation continued over their meal.

The food was good. Nothing fancy. But it was good. A freshly made burger with good quality beef, cheese, coleslaw, onions, fries. It was really good. Followed by a piece of freshly made apple pie. It may have been a truck stop but it wasn't hard to see why it was successful. Tom related what they knew with Evie adding in some of the details she'd found out. Everything that BJ said backed up what Tucker had said and reinforced what Tom and Evie had found out already. Hammer was new though. They should definitely check out all of the Cal Tran employees in the morning Evie thought, but she was really hoping she could get to see Rachel in the next day or two. Rachel would be able to confirm the lines back to Damien Kane maybe. Hopefully.

During their dinner meeting with BJ, Tom's mind was already working on how they should continue with this case. BJ was very helpful with the information he had. It was adding credibility to everything that Tucker said before and shedding light on the things Evie was hearing from her college friend. A picture was beginning to take shape here. One which spoke of Kane being the real power behind the new criminal power structure within LA's underworld. All that was needed now was the evidence to tie Kane into everything. BJ had said Kane was good at covering his tracks, but it was clear that some knew of Kane's activities. Tom & Evie just needed to find proof that would lead too Kane's arrest. Once dinner was over, Tom thanked BJ and said they'd be in touch. He believed they'd need BJ's help as this played out. After good nights were exchanged, everyone left the Country Comfort. Tom & Evie headed back to the boat to relax and go over what they knew all ready. After a few hours of talking over the case, it was decided a break was needed. Tom & Evie ended up in the shower together. They spent about 30 minutes under the warm water getting very relax before ending up in bed fucking like a couple of horny rabbits. Tom took great pleasure in fucking Evie's ass and pussy with his cock. He had her moaning and begging for more. This is where Tom told Evie that he was planning one of their special party's. This meant Evie would get to spend some time with McWilliams and that Kim would be involved. Tom also said that a special guest would be invited, but he didn't say who that was. Evie would get used by someone else in front of her closest friends. Tom said the party was still a ways off, but he was sure Evie would enjoy herself.

The night ended with Tom & Evie in each others arms. They stayed that way until around 2:30 am. Tom's cell phone, which was laying on the nightstand beside the bed started going off. With a groan brought on by being woken from a deep sleep, Tom reached over and grabbed his phone. He answered it and found James on the other end. James was the member of the MCU on call this evening. He told Tom about a body being found after a report came in on a possible burglary. Tom didn't see why the MCU needed involved. He told James to just let robbery/homicide take the case. James said they were already on scene and it was they who called James. He said the victim had Evie's name and cell number in her phone. James then said the victim's name was Rachel McFarlane. " Alright.....We'll be right there. " Tom said before hanging up his phone. " We gotta go to work. " Tom said to Evie while laying his phone back down. He then added it seemed Rachel had been murdered during a burglary.

Tom drove on the way back and between them they talked out what they knew for sure and how they thought everything linked together. Motive was the biggest unknown but maybe it was the most common motive of all - money and power. Kane was maybe the kind of man who felt no amount of money was enough. When they got back to the boat, Tom opened a bottle of wine and the two of them sat on the couch and talked through various ways they could sort this out. First step though was for Evie to meet with Rachel and see if she could get her friend to give her any information about Damien Kane. Tom then decided that they had done enough work for one day. He took Evie's glass from her hand and put it on the table, then took her hand and led her down stairs. Evie said nothing. She just smiled and followed. Tom switched on the shower as Evie started to get undressed. He followed suit and then the pair of them stepped into the hot water spray. Tom wrapped his arms around her, pulled her close and the two kissed... and kept kissing as the water streamed over them. A long hot shower. Soaped hands moving over each other. Nothing was rushed. They weren't working to any kind of schedule here. When Tom finally switched the shower off, he picked Evie up and carried her to the bed. He sat down and put her in his lap, impaling her on his cock. She looked at him... straight in the eye as she slowly rocked back and forth, his cock buried deep inside her. His hands rested on her ass moving with her as she moved. Tom told her McWilliams had been on the phone to him just after they had got back from New York. Tom told her he thought it was about time her favourite training officer got a chance to give her a refresher and maybe this time, Kim wouldn't be the only other person putting Evie through her drills. Evie's mind flicked between images in the past - with McWilliams and with Kim. Tom could see her remembering and smiled. He remembered too and grinned. He stood up, with Evie still impaled on his cock. He turned around and bent forward, putting Evie on her back on the bed. He then hooked his hooked his arms under her legs, put his hands down level with her shoulders and started to fuck Evie hard. They fucked long and hard in various positions until both of them were spent. In the end, they fell asleep with Tom's cock still buried in her cunt.

When the phone went a few hours later, Evie just groaned as Tom reached over Evie and picked it up. She heard Tom's side of the conversation, heard him saying good morning to James then telling him to let Robbery Homicide take the case... then the pause... she felt Tom tense a little. She turned over a looked at him as he finished the call telling James they would be there soon.

"What is it? Is James okay?" Tom put the phone down and eased himself out of bed. He nodded then told her what James had said. Told her who the victim was. Evie was stunned by what he said. She stared straight ahead as her brain tried to process it. Then she looked back at Tom.

"Did we do this? Did we cause...."

"No... how could we? Nothing that we've done so far ... nothing we've got was from her."

"But I called her..."

"Like you have every couple of weeks for how many years?"

"I guess."

"My bet is your friend bit off more than she could chew. Maybe if she had let you in on it sooner, then she might...." Evie nodded.

They shared a shower again but it was very different from the night before. They headed out for the crime scene. James was still there. He took them round Rachel's apartment pointing out everything which made it an obvious burglary attempt. Obvious if you didn't know that there might be something else behind it.

"Any papers? A lap top? PDA? Anything that she might have saved information on."

"Nothing... but you would hardly expect to find a lap top or a PDA when there has been a burglary would you?" Evie shook her head and then after giving the place one more look, she turned and headed out the door. Tom watched her go deciding to give her a few minutes. He checked around with james in case there was anything like a CD or a memory stick around but they found nothing. Tom told James to make sure that Robbery Homicide knew this case was theirs - that the were sure it was linked to an active investigation and then he stepped outside. He found Evie standing out near the car. He said nothing - just looked at her.

"We have to find a way in. We're only gonna get Kane from the inside. And I want Damien Kane taken down." Tom nodded.

Tom & Evie left the boat in the unmarked police car which they often used. The drive from the boat to Rachel's apartment didn't take long at this time of night. Traffic was pretty light after 2 am. By the time Tom & Evie reached her friend's apartment building, the area was full of black n whites and other unmarked police cars. Tom pulled the car over and parked. He & Evie left their vehicle and walked quickly towards a group of uniformed officers. Evie went quickly passed this group and headed inside. Tom stopped just long enough to make sure the area was secure. He then followed behind Evie. James & Kim were waiting inside. Rachel's cell phone was already inside an evidence bag. The detectives from homicide had gone over it. That is where they found Evie's name and phone number. The lead homicide detective was Sergeant Bill Hume. He was a 19 year veteran of the force. A good cop and family man who;d seen a lot on the job.

James took Tom & Evie around the apartment, showing them signs of the break in. There were obvious signs, a little too obvious for Tom's liking. He'd seen enough burglary cases over the years to stop one which looked staged. As Tom looked around, he got the feeling the place had been trashed not by a burglar, but by someone looking for something. It wasn't surprising that no laptop, nor PDA was found. While it was true a burglar would take such items. So would someone who was looking for something that Rachel may have. Perhaps some information which could lead a certain businessman to a jail cell. The more Tom looked around, the more he thought this was a setup. Tom told James that this was now an MCU investigation. He believed it was linked to what was happening too Tucker Pappas. Tom asked James to take care of letting Hume knew the case was no longer his. James nodded then went over to talk with Sergeant Hume. Tom took another look around before going out to find Evie. She hadn't gone far. He found her just outside. Tom listened as Evie spoke of getting inside and taking Kane down. He understood her feelings on this. Her friend had been murdered before she could spill the beans on the powerful Damien Kane.

" We'll get him........He won't get away with this.......But we're gonna need a little special help. " Tom said as he placed his right hand onto Evie's shoulder. He was already forming a plan on how to get someone inside of Kane's operation. Tom said they would need to get in touch with BJ again. He'd be the special help they needed. Kim came walking out saying the crime scene techs were in their way and they should be here soon. Tom nodded while saying he wanted everything checked. Finger prints, fibers, DNA on the victim. It was a shot in the dark, but it was possible that the so called burglar may have slipped up. A wagon from the coroner's office arrived. A couple of men climbed from the car, grabbed their cart and headed inside. After picking up Rachel's body they headed back out. One man asked if there was anyone who could identify the body? They needed an official ID down at the office from someone who knew the victim. Tom nodded his head and said they'd be stop by later in the morning. He then told the men to make Rachel's autopsy a priority. Tom then turned his attention back too Evie. He knew she was hurting inside. This wasn't just some normal victim too Evie. It was her friend and college companion. " Why don't you and Kim go get some coffee........I'll meet you back at the station.......Then we'll get in touch with BJ again. " Tom said as he moved closer and wrapped an arm around Evie. Kim said she had her car just down the street a little ways.

Kim and Evie left James and Tom to finish up at the crime scene with Evie saying that Rachel didn't have any family except an aunt that was out in Tennessee. She agreed to do the formal identification before she and Kim walked down the street to where Kim had parked and then Kim drove to an all night diner she knew about a few blocks away. Evie was more angry that upset at that point; she was annoyed with Rachel for not telling her more or bringing in the cops.

"Why would she keep on digging into this shit on her own. She couldn't have talked to me. She could have talked to any cop. She wasn't an investigator; she was a damned accountant." Evie wasn't asking Kim specifically and wasn't expecting Kim to answer. Kim didn't. There was nothing she could say. Kim asked how long Evie and known her and they sat for about 20 minutes talking about Evie's college days. When they were finished their coffee, they headed back to the station. Dawn was justing starting to creep over the horizon. Evie took a quick detour into the bathroom and washed her face and then joined up with the rest of the team in the office. Steve and her Dad were there with James having called them. Evie assured them she was fine and promised that she wasn't doing to do anything stupid.

"Just remember. Justice is about making Kane and his friends pay for her pain. Revenge is making them pay for yours.” Evie looked at her brother, stunned for a moment and then she couldn't help but smile.

"And since when were you the wise sage and the voice of ultimate reason?"

They sat for a while and talked through what they had and Tom called BJ and asked if was free later for another conversation; there was an idea he wanted to run by him. After that Tom and Evie made the trip to the morgue to get the ME results. It wasn't pleasant. Rachel had been tied up at some point... wrists and ankles. She had been beaten pretty badly before she had been killed. Evie left not intent on revenge but intent on making sure that they took Damien Kane down.

Tom set up another meeting with BJ, but not at the Country Comfort. That could be dangerous for what Tom had in mind. He told BJ to meet them in an area of Malibu where they could have some privacy. It would be safer this way. Tom & Evie got into their car and drove north up the PCH north. By the time they reached the area for the meeting, BJ was already there. His big red & white Kenworth parted just off the road. BJ greeted Tom & Evie with hand shakes. Tom then started to tell BJ & Evie about his plan. He wanted to get someone on the inside of 5-Star Trucking. Someone who just may get close enough to link Damien Kane to everything that was going on. Tom then announced Evie would be their inside person. He knew that she couldn't drive a rig, but that's where BJ could help. Tom asked if BJ could train Evie to drive his truck? BJ said he could, but it would have to be a crash course. Evie wouldn't have the time to lean each and every little detail of truck driving. Tom said the basics would be fine. It wasn't like Evie would be taking any long hall jobs anyway.

Evie's job was to get inside and find some evidence to be used against Kane and those working for him. BJ said Evie would have to go through Hammer before getting inside. She'd have to impress him before getting any trucking job. BJ said Hammer wasn't keen on female truck drivers. There was no way of knowing what Evie would need to do in order to impress Hammer. Tom said Evie would do whatever she needed to do. This wasn't her first undercover operation. Tom said Evie could handle herself and anything that she came acrossed. BJ said okay and said they could start right now. He moved towards his truck motioning for Evie to follow. BJ went over the connection between the rig and the box trailer. He then opened the driver's side door and told Evie to climb inside and get behind the wheel. The area that Tom picked was great for training in a large truck. It had huge open & flat areas where Evie could learn how to drive the rig. Tom waited and watched as BJ worked with Evie over the next few hours. He taught her enough about truck driving that she was ready to make a run on her own. Which is just what they did. With BJ and the Bear at her side, Evie drove the Kenworth northward. They drove through a couple of towns and did a few other things. Tom followed just behind in the car. Evie was doing a great job. They went back to the area in Malibu where they met. Tom said Evie, under another name, had an interview to become a truck driver for 5-Star in the morning. BJ said she'd pass that with ease. He wasn't so sure about her interview with Hammer though. Despite what Tom said, BJ wondered if Evie could handle what Hammer had for her.

Evie didn't have a problem with getting someone on the inside of 5-Star Trucking and she didn't have any problem with the notion that it should be her. She could maybe see how she would be seen a no threat to their operations. She was a little taken aback though at the idea that she should go under cover as a driver. She had never even sat in a semi and before she really knew what was happening she sat in the driving seat of a mammoth vehicle. She practically had to take a running jump just to get into the thing and then the cabin around her felt huge. Before they moved anywhere, BJ took her through the gearbox. 18 complicated forward speeds and 4 reverse speeds. A shift knob with two switched which magically allowed the five forward ratios to become 18 different speeds. Before firing up the ignition, Evie suggested that maybe a 'crash course' hadn't been the best of phrases. Fortunately, Evie was a quick study and BJ was a good teacher.

After the test drive, they headed back to the boat. That night, with James and Kim, they carved out a history for her over pizza and beer. They made a call to Carl Tucker and he was more than happy to give Evie... or Charlotte 'Charlie' McKenna as Tom had christened her to get her the interview... an employment history. Charlotte had recently left Pappas Trucking worried about job security and seeing that 5-Star Trucking might be a good alternative. The made her an only child. And an orphan. No family. No ties. Happy to stay in motels when she wasn't driving. Evie memorised everything. Kim and James created computer files. A paper trail. A history. A life.

The following morning Evie stayed at the boat whilst Tom went into the office to get a set of papers created... drivers license and ID, social security number, bank account, the everyday things which supported someone's identity. He was back in time for Evie to leave for the interview. By 10.00am she was stood outside of 5-Star Trucking's main site. It was in Culver City within striking distances of the Santa Monica and the San Diego freeways as well as the PCH. She wore cowboy boots and tight jeans, a white shirt open an the neck with a hint of cleavage and a suede jacket. She walked across the open yard and into the single storey building which served as a central office. She pushed open the door and stepped into an entirely plain, functional outer office which was split in half by a reception counter. On her side of the counter was a range of oddly matched chairs against the walls around most of the three sides. There was a coffee machine and a small table with empty and half drunk cups on it. Evie guessed that this was where the drivers came each morning to pick up their job for the day. Right now there was no-one else on her side of the counter, but there was a middle aged woman on the other side. Evie introduced herself as Charlie and the woman looked genuinely surprised. They had assumed Charlie was a man... and that was probably why she had gotten in the door.

The woman known as Maxine was totally surprised by seeing Charlie wasn't a man. It was written down that way and just naturally assumed as such. Maxine couldn't understand how this mistake was made. There must have been some misunderstanding at some point. Maxine asked Charlie to sit. She picked up her desk phone, punched in a number and began whispering. It was clear she was talking about the woman called Charlie. After nodding her head, Maxine hung up the phone. " Mr. Tanner will be with you shortly. " Maxine said before returning too her desk work. A few minutes passed before a door off to the side of Maxine's desk opened. A man, standing roughly 5'8" come strolling out. He looked over at where Charlie sat. His eyes studying her body like she was some pinup girl. Certainly someone made one hell of a mistake with this one. But, as mistakes go, this one shaped up pretty damn nicely.

The man came over, his hand extended outwards. He introduced himself as Alan Tanner, general manager of 5-Star Trucking. Tanner was in his late 40's, slightly balding with some grey hairs mixed into the rest of his brown hair. He invited Charlie into his office for the interview. Tanner told Maxine to hold all of his calls. He didn't want to be disturbed while talk with a possible employee. Maxine nodded while she watched Charlie walk into the office. Tanner turned as she passed by. He loved the view of Charlie's ass while she moved. Tanner entered the office and closed the door. He told Charlie to sit as he moved towards his desk. Tanner slipped behind it, then slowly sat down. He picked up his reading glasses before opening a file which laid upon his desk. Tanner flipped through some papers with humming faintly. He then looked up at Charlie. His eyes were just above the glasses he wore. " So you worked for Pappas?........It says here you decided to leave.......Why did you pick 5-Star? " Tanner asked while his eyes found the hint of cleavage showing. He liked a woman who knew how to dress to impress. This one certainly was dressed to show off her assets.

Evie sat patiently, looking relaxed and in right, smiling when she made casual eye contact with the woman on the other side of the counter. She didn't have to wait long before Alan Tanner appeared. She Recognized him immediately from the picture in the police file. She stayed seated as he looked at her then stood up as he approached, giving him a full opportunity to see her head to toe as he walked through the office. She extended her own hand to meet his. She shook his...or really she let him shake hers. He held onto it a second or two longer than was normal but Evie just smiled and held his hand back. When he finally let go of her hand and invited her in, she said "thanks" and walked through the now open counter, through the outer office space, conscious of Maxine watching her, and into Tanner's own office. She heard him stepping in behind her and closing the door but she waited for the invitation to sit down before taking a chair set at a slight angle to the desk. The office decor was much the same in here as it had been outside. It was brown and beige and grey. Tired paint. An old but nonetheless solid wooden desk which had definitely been built to last. An much newer but still well used executive leather chair which she watched Tanner sit himself into. There were two equally old but still tidy armchairs on her side of the desk. She sat down and crossed her legs, letting her foot bounce a little in the air and she 'innocently' gave him a nice view of a firm long leg in nicely fitted jeans. She made sure that the jacket was naturally open. She smiled at the question.

"Word on the street is that 5 Star is going places. Expanding. And that its drivers are well treated. And well rewarded. I like the sound of all of that Mr Tanner. And I think I can do a good job for you in return. I'm a good worker Sir. No one usually has any complaints with my quality of service." She sat looking back at him, still smiling. Still bright eyed and relaxed.

The answer Charlie gave to Tanner's question, was what some would call a textbook answer. There was nothing wrong with it, nor was there anything odd about it. It was something that Tanner heard many times before. He would have been suspicious had Charlie given something totally off the wall. Something that just didn't fit what a new driver would say. Tanner smiled while nodding his head. He looked down at the file on Charlie. Everything was in order. He had a copy of her CDL ( commercial driver's license ) and her Hazmat. These were items each truck driver needed before hitting the open roads. The Governor helped to secure the proper requirements which allowed Eric to drive a semi truck anywhere in the Untied States. Tanner lifted his eyes up towards Charlie. A sly smile came over his face as his eyes moved over her leg. " I believe we have a position for someone with your qualifications Charlie. " Tanner slowly rose from his chair. He moved around to the front of his desk before sitting down on it.

Tanner was now facing Charlie, a few feet separating them. " We do have some tests for you to pass......I'm sure someone so willing to work for 5 star will pass the tests without any trouble. " Tanner's sly smile grew into a grin as he spoke. " We do treat our drivers who work hard and do what they're told very well........And we do reward those who show loyalty towards the company. " Tanner added while unzipping his pants. He reached into the fly and pulled his cock out. It was soft, not overly large, but not too bad. " Here's your first reward for getting the job........Now get down on your knees and give me a blow job. " Tanner said before adding that this was also his reward for hiring Charlie.

Evie watched as Tanner stood up and walked around the desk. She was relieved that the paperwork the guys had pulled together for her seemed to have done the job and at least for now she wasn't being shown the door. The relief was momentary as she saw Tanner sitting down on the edge of the desk closest to her... and then she sat up a little straighter as he unzipped his pants. She was a little surprised at how fast Tanner came on to her and she couldn't help wonder whether this was something that all female truckers needed to deal with to get a job in such a male dominated industry. She looked at his cock and then slowly lifted her gaze to him. She guessed that he would see any look of surprise on her face are completely normal... who wouldn't have been surprised? But she knew that she had to show him that she was exactly what he wanted. She let a slight smile appear on her face and she slowly pushed herself up out of her chair. She took a few steps and closed the gap between them; she stood close to him looking at him, her body against his slightly side-on. Her left hand reached down for his cock, feeling it soft at her fingers as they wrapped around it and began to stroke it slowly. She leaned in a kissed his cheek softly once... twice... a third time.

"I like this ... reward very much... thank you Mr. Tanner. I don't think you'll be disappointed." she whispered between the light kisses. And then she moved down onto her knees, looking at him as she did so. She took his cock into her mouth and pulled her head back slowly. She did it again ... and again... and with each slow move of her head she felt his cock growing. Taking his cock into her mouth became gradually more and more difficult as it thickened and hardened. She moaned softly as she used her mouth and her tongue. Behind her the door to Tanner's office opened. Maxine walked in with a folder in her hand.

"Here are the papers you wanted for you meeting this afternoon. Hammer has also called. Says you can get him on his usual number but he should be here in a couple of hours." She seemed to pay no notice to what Evie was doing. Tanner felt the woman at his feet tense a little, felt her starting to pull back. He put his hand onto her head, fingers in her hair and pulled her toward him.

"Don't worry Charlie... Maxine has been with me long enough to have seen it all before. You are not the first slut to work through the door wanting a job so you just keep doing what you're doing." Evie moaned and opened her mouth letting Tanner's cock slide deeper as he pulled her closer... and closer... and closer... and then held her there, her nose pressed against his groin. He groaned and chuckled as he moved his hips forward to push himself even deeper into her throat. He was definitely enjoying his reward.

It wasn't a common practice for all female truck drivers to do what Evie was doing now. This only happened for the hot ones. Charlie was certainly one of those hot ones. Tanner couldn't let her go without having some fun. Like he said, it was a reward for them both. Tanner was impressed with how Charlie started everything out. It showed she wasn't timid. Tanner didn't like women who were too timid and neither did Hammer. They didn't mind female truck drivers, as long as those women understood their place within the company. Women were given the same loads to haul like the men, but women had certain features which just couldn't be left alone. Any woman joining this company was expected not only to be a top driver, but also a willing whore. At the main part of the truck depot, it wasn't an uncommon sight too see some female driver giving hand jobs, or even blow jobs while waiting for an assignment. More private sexual encounters could also be seen once in a while. The odd gang bang of some woman by a dozen or so male truck drivers happened.

Tanner thanked Maxine while keeping a firm hold on Charlie. Maxine dropped off the papers before leaving the room. She didn't say a word, or even bat an eyelash. Tanner let out a long groan as his cock pushed deep into Charlie's throat. " You're the best cocksucker I've seen in a long time baby.........You take it deep then most women. " Tanner said as his cock easily slipped down the back of Evie's throat. He held her head close for a few seconds before pulling it backwards. " Hammer's gonna love you.....He enjoys a woman who knows what her true role is......You just remember who the boss is around here......And who you need to keep happy. " Tanner added before tell Charlie to keep work on his cock. He wanted to cum before giving Charlie a tour and showing her which truck she would be using.
