What Is Smut to You

I've been wondering this alot recently, and I feel its a legitimate question.

Do you smut lovers out there do it for sexual thrill or simply for fun. Im being serious here and kind of want to know as I too ahve done my fair share of smutting.

I feel like I can't take this seriously when it says, "smut." I know that's what in general it's called, but it just sounds silly in this type of setting.

I like my sexually based RPs. Especially my very sexual ones. It's fun and I enjoy them.

Like Hahvoc, I just giggle when I hear the word "smut". With my personal opinion, I enjoy smutty writing and reading. I want it to have real story and plot, with characters that are worthwhile so that I can both get a thrill from the interaction and enjoyment from it. Smut in my real life? Never been a fan of letting people touch me except my husband so I guess that answers that.

As a smut enthusiast of relatively long standing, I appreciate characters and plotlines, but really, I read it for the hard action. Then again, I'm a guy, so it's pretty obvious what I'm looking for. If I wanted a regular story with some sex in it, I'd read a romance novel, or Robert Anton Wilson.

Smut is the term I use when trying to explain to my MMO RP partners that there can be sexual interactions in an RP without it being "ERP", which is looked down on on games like WoW (By that I mean we openly mock them on vent and in guild chat).
I prefer RPs with an interesting plot, intriguing characters, and hot sexi-tiems. But I don't get off on it, it's just fun-- like all RP is.

For me, when I hear people using the term smut with regards to writing, the first thing that comes to mind (and I mean no offense) is an IM-based RP where you literally just do a hot and heavy, very graphic sex scene and nothing more. No character development, no story/plot, nothing. Just the sex and it's over.

So, when people refer to stories as smut, I tend to quirk a brow. Sure, some stories have sex in them. Some have a lot. But, for me, if there's a plot and there's character development, it's far from smut in my eyes. Then, I'd either consider it romance or erotica depending on the level of graphic sex as well as what sorts of sexual encounters and the like were incorporated.

That said, to me, I see smut as something that's a mere quickie one shot of a particular scene. Or, to put it plain... text-based porn.

Also, let me add, nothing wrong with smut. It has it's place for sure. It's just, I don't think of it as something that's a true blue story or anything like that. :)

Text-based porn FTW.

I wouldn't consider my RPs to be smut. They are definitely sexual in nature but don't drive the story. That's when I think it is smut - when the RP is purely sex driven.

Indeed.

Even sex driven, depending, isn't necessarily smut in my mind. For me, it only becomes that when there's nothing to tell other than the sex. If there's plot involved (even a loose one, lol) and highly sexual, I tend to consider it erotica. XD

But again, this is just my own perception.

Smut can be any number of things, depending on how you use it.

A lot of people, like Sangu up there, says porn without plot. I see it as a way to expand into a plot that, with luck, is dynamic enough to survive with or without sex.

Though, personally, I like reading smut more than writing it. But then again, I joined BMRP to practice, so I don't know if my opinion is that valid or not.

I consider a roleplay smut when most of the plot/action is detailed sex. I don't do a lot of smut. I mean I want to, but it usually evolves into erotica (which I define as having just as much/more writing and action devoted to character development and non-sexual scenes) without me noticing.

The term "smut" actually formed itself from an old British, adult based comic back in the 1980's.
Erotica would be more the term i would use for role plays that are more then 80% sex based.
So smut to me, is a dirty comic book lol

Also, the same word, "smut" is also a fungus....

Well if you care about another guy's opinion:

For me it honestly all depends on mood. If I'm, frankly and bluntly just feeling really in the mood, I most likely won't be looking for an RP with plot and junk. I'll be looking for what you call smut because it gets to the point, as opposed to someone who wants to spend a couple days developing something before anything like that happens.

On the other hand, when I just feel like legitimately RPing, I love nothing more than plot development. In fact I'm a Nazi at it (No offence) because I like my good plots. When the hot and heavy scenes come along after, It's perfect for the days where I do feel really in the mood because I already have an established plot.

Sooo I suppose to me Smut just means the availability to get the sex you want whenever you want it.

So the way I understand it, erotica is a story with a plot that has graphic depictions of sex and smut is a story that is just a graphic depiction of sex?

I use that word all the time, but I hardly mean any of my RP sessions are nothing but sexual scenes. They tend to have a lot going other then sex and I enjoy the aspect of a story. I guess I use that word because I don't shy away from erotic writing either it tends to come into play when ever it is an appropriate time. Though I didn't join this site for sexual RP, I joined it because I don't like restrictions in RP. This includes violence, language, drugs, and sexual themes that other sites frown upon.

For me smut is fun but in doses, I have to have a story line with my smut I just can't jump in and well with small descriptions just have sex all willy nilly... ya gotta warm up the oven in a sense dear, give me something to look forward to, I want imagination and time... don't fuck me and leave, I've got enough of that...

Smut is only a symptom of a larger issue, and what some consider smut others consider literature.

Now that I gave at least one high brow comment, let me dip into the simpler truth. Far too many people think their standard of smut is what should rule the day, and I am not dissing anyone's rights here. I respect what Asia Carrera would consider inappropriate as much as a Southern Baptist (speaking from experience and where I live) would. I would let all vices be heard. But I would also make my point, and that is this.

Smut for the sake of smut is not always bad. Smut is many things. It can be a role-play with nothing but sex. It can be a magazine with nothing but stories about sex and pictures depicting it. It can be a dirty joke or a "work of art".

It also can be a book series geared to make BDSM all about getting a woman off and overly glorifying her side of things. It can also be daytime television preaching the virtues of bed-hopping with the frequency of a cheap ham radio without consequences. It can be "romance novels" that extoll the "virtues" of trivial fluff that really doesn't matter in a relationship.

For me, "SMUT" is a four letter list. "Stupidity Manipulative Unrealistic Tripe". If it fits that set of descriptive words, then yes, it is smut. Not that in role-play it is not okay... as it is role-play.

You just CANNOT use it as a standard for reality.

Just a visceral reaction: I've always associated the word, "smut" with old people. It seems to be a generic catch-all for everything sexually inappropriate. As far as I can tell, that seems to include everything that does not meet Victorian standards.

Old bitty: "You harlot! I saw your ankle when your blouse blew in the wind! How dare you pedal that cheeky smut in my town! A good thwack from a thick switch is what you need, you hussy!"

OMFG it's true lol I remember some movie doing the same thing

Smut is content created solely for instant gratification. It lacks any sense of deeper, emotional complexities; has no intellectually stimulating properties; lacks any sense of meaningful characterization; and/or has no inherent intent to enrich the culture is it produced for, or act as a non-exploitative commentary. It is the material that is produced only for immediate, mindless enjoyment.

I was about to post my own definition, but this parallels mine better than 90%.

I tend to want more from a story/RP than smut...but I do have my moments.:D
