Of course, this is entirely up to prettylyksin's whims.

So. 'kay. The software that runs these forums sucks. Hard. You can guess what I'm voting for.

I like to give things a genuine chance. I figured this would make me REALLY look into phpbb3 and see what it honestly had to offer.

Haha. Hahahaha...

*ahem*

Between modules and my own coding, almost everything phpbb3 has to offer, smf can do as well. Often better.

I find myself decidedly underwhelmed.

Some features don't have established modules in smf, currently.

Namely, post drafts, the outbox/sentbox split, and custom bbcode.

Bookmarks also only exists as a module, however I can probably update the converter (would need to in order to also convert avatars, etc) to handle them likewise.

Custom BBCode is of course entirely my issue. Post drafts, if seriously desired, I could probably hack together. A split outbox/sentbox is a bit hairy due to the way SMF handles private messages, unfortunately.

Anyway. Post open for discushion. Want to see what people think.

    • Phpbb:

      SMF:

Elliquiy is running on and old version of SMF, we are currently running phpbb3.

I really like what Elliquiy is running on personally, so I'm changing my vote. :)

Prettyness is a bit mutable...

I think we should stay with what we have, I'm sick of switching rps to new boards.

I don't see the point of fixing what isn't broken. It's working well for most people from what I can tell, and I don't relish the idea of moving again. It's a colossal pain in the ass to try to move everything to a new site or save all rps to redeem later.

Nothing would be moving.

But since it's so unpopular I'll drop it until the flaws become overwhelming.

Vek, the thing of it was was this. I just don't see how converting the format to the SMF style would be worth adding to what already works. Granted, Phpbb doesn't really have all of the best mods in the world and I can most certainly agree with that, but what would it do? That's all I wanna ask.

1: Direct download of uploaded avatars and attachments.
2: Better support for Wiki integration.
3: Vastly superior UI.
4: Maintained Sphinx search plugin. This will only matter when I'm forced to disable search due to server lag.
5: Better module handling.
6: Ignoring pms from a specific person, preventing them from even being sent in the first place.
7: Trash forum - recover deleted posts when needed (or to be used as evidence)
8: Quick Reply
9: Calendar (not like many care about it)
10: SSI functions are a godsend for integration in general, a la the dieroller on Elliquiy for a rather primitive example.
11: Built in spell checking to shove in the face of people who refuse to use a real browser.
12: Better query design. Phpbb is significantly slower than SMF on several levels.

I can go on.

----

I suppose, ultimately, we can just keep plugging along with phpbb's upgrades and cross our fingers hoping it catches up.

Personally, I'm quite used to the PHPBBS3, but I have no problem with adapting to a much better system, especially if it makes things easier for administrators and mods to do their jobs.

I like this.

Not only does it work fine enough but when people start coding things for a forum they start becoming selfish entitled twats.
