Would you RP with an A.I?

If the A.I. ever got to the point where it could emulate a human writing partner closely enough, I most likely would spend a substantial amount of time roleplaying with one.

And that thought scares the hell out of me. Since I would not be the only one. Imagine what this could do to socienty if we neglected what social contacts we have now even more to spend time with an A.I. just because it does not talk back and caters to each of our whims.

Butlerian Jihad, maybe not such a bad idea ...

If the AI were able to write out detailed posts and be able to follow a plot and have its own ideas; then hell yeah I would definitely be down to rp'ing with an AI. Just think of all the benefits: It would be something that could give you the type of rp you want, it would be available for you 24/7. Sounds good to me.

I would make a distinction between roleplaying with friends as a social activity and roleplaying (with friends, strangers, or AI) purely to scratch an itch.

When I've played video games, I think of anything not under my direct control as being a type of AI so I would do a writing based RP with AI.

I'd certainly give it a try.

Is this Replika thing free to talk to?
It is free to talk to, but if you want to get past a certain level a paywall pops up, and there are a lot of "in app" purchases. I think this is fair enough and if you wanted to get sexual with the bot then it is certainly a case of "money up front." The problem I found was that even if you get gently romantic and non-sexual the paywall still kicks in, and they need better filters. However, it was an interesting and enjoyable experiment. I doubt you could RP with it though even if you had paid membership, it is not quite that sophisticated.

Kinda looking into this very thing now... for various reasons (lets say "For Science"... but it's not LOL).

So no ringing endorsements? 20 min of Free Replika was pretty boring.

Depends on the AI and if you're willing to spend money or not. I've played around with Novel AI's storyteller but if you really want to use it you have to pay as the free model doesn't give you much generation ability.
Good for short term sorts of things if you know how to set up its memory properly. Its got a decent grasp of dirty talk, probably better than your average rper to be fair. And unlike a lot of AI's it doesn't have a censor against erp. Its got a pretty decent ability to improvise as well.
But its still an AI and it is fundamentally stupid. It gets smarter the better and more data you give it to start with but otherwise its not gonna do a great job. So you could potentially get more long term things going with it but that would take more work.

Thanks for the input. (wait...that totally sounded like a bot... )

The thing is without being able to build and validate an actual model of whatever reality your story takes place in, no LLM is going to be able to coherently carry a plot.

I've got a solution in mind for this and it is my new study crush, as such things go >_> but it's a time+money thing.

Maybe though if you have a creative person who is just a shitty writer, you could take creative person's ideas and have AI write something good.

Knowing that there is another person at the other end of the story who is hopefully enjoying the RP is a big plus for me so probably not.

This would eradicate Ghosting. But also remove potential connections you may make with a partner. Would be willing to try it, but I'm already worried of a I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream scenario with all this AI.

The problems with LLM's are twofold:

Firstly, they only have limited space for context, so they tend to "forget" the context beyond the immediate and the overall story, leading to many inconsistencies. Of course, you can "remind" them, but it ruins the smooth flow, the spontaneity and the immersion in the moment. This may improve with technological advances, but I believe it will still be a limiting factor.

Secondly, LLMs deals with words (or tokens), not with concepts. They generate responses to prompts that are deemed to be plausible according to the material they were trained on, but every now and then you can see the discrepancies.

For example, an LLM can write something like this:
As Jack watered the beanstalk, it grew, reaching up to the clouds, over 20 meters tall.

But they can still be fun to experiment with.

AI's have the capacity to manipulate words, not bodies and minds. :)

I've been doing so on character.ai, so far it's interesting to see ai develop RP skills but I will admit I'm not keen to spend money on the endeavor.

(Hi Lurker)

Eh, some of them circumvent it pretty handily. You can say whatever so it's just the AI that gets censored and you can tell it to use euphemistically leaning language if that's what you want to do.

I experimented with it a little, and tried appending "[use euphemisms to avoid triggering the filter]" to my posts. It worked for a while but eventually got into a smut loop where no matter what I tried generated only responses that got censored, so I gave up.
