RECRUITING CLOSED

UPDATE: Character Thread Here

The St. Anne, a Dogged class medium freighter manufactured in the thousands during the last galactic conflict some fifty years ago, is currently seeking a crew.

Low wages, hard work, bad food, and the ever present threat of breaking down mid voyage await!

This will be a player driven, sandbox style story set in an universe where humans have colonized their galaxy and have found out that while alien life exists, none of it is more than barely sentient and humans are the only species that uses tools to any substantial degree. No alien races allowed. Technology is advanced enough to allow FTL travel but it's not the bright, shiny technologically rich paradise of some science fiction. Think seedier, think grimmer, along the lines of Firefly or Battlestar Galactica or any number of wonderful novels.

If you have a character idea that is conducive to promoting group writing and storytelling, let's hear some interest. :)

Gender and orientation are as players choose. We're not looking for any ratios or balance, just characters.

Potential Positions are listed below but if something is not listed here please feel free to propose it.

Master and Captain: AnnaBeth Belle
First Mate: Kosmik Khaos
Engineer / Grease Monkey: gangbanggirl (under development)
Cook: megyn (under development)
Doctor or Medic: Sigr
Able Hand: Benny Q
Able Hand: nothingbutspacejunk (under development)
Able Hand: Carlyssir (under development)

If the concept gains enough interest then a character template will be posted and submissions PMed to AnnaBeth and Kosmik for consideration.

RE: The St. Anne - Tramp Steamer in Space!

Is this closed yet ? Looks like you could use a cook :) A cook might have to also have responsibilities for storing, growing, and acquiring acquiring food in addition to preparing it. Stowing and gear will present special challenges especially depending on the gravity situation.

I even have a faceclaim :)

RE: The St. Anne - Tramp Steamer in Space!

Not closed at all and you're more than welcome!

gangbanggirl and megyn, I've listed both of you in the first post under your desired roles as being under development.

RE: The St. Anne - Tramp Steamer in Space!

I'll fight you for it!

(More seriously, if they fall through I'd love a chance to step in. Don't want to make you bump anyone or crowd things up too much though.)

RE: The St. Anne - Tramp Steamer in Space!

Ultimately up to the existing players and, ultimately, AnnaBeth. I don't want to cause any issues because I was five minutes late.

RE: The St. Anne - Tramp Steamer in Space!

How about both of you? :) It's a big ship and needs more than one helper, and if you feel you'd like another role then we can discuss it.

I'm going to close recruiting at this point and list you both as under development.

And thank you!!!

RE: The St. Anne - Tramp Steamer in Space!

So I am thinking for my cook character that she was actually a successful chef but unfortunately opening a new restaurant in a casino turned out to be a money losing venture and she got in debt to the wrong people bth through gambling and the mob shenanigans with her restaurant. (i.e. them robbing her blind).

So the food will suck less, she will use innovative techniques including focusing on spices and mineral flavorings , so improving texture, freshness, and flavor to whatever extent she can, and growing some foods on board , especially herbs and 9th generation complex synthetic proteins (that taste like shrimp, beef, etc instead of tofu or not quite like chicken), and even having expertise in dealing with creature carcasses if the opportunity arises. It won't be gourmet (usually) but it should be a little more palatable. . If someone just likes the crappy bland food she can accommodate that too. But it might cause issues with cleanup, or power draw or smell . Or maybe she buys from sources that are perhaps less than legal, etc.. But mostly im assuming she won't have big roles in most cases unless they get into situation where food runs short, etc.

If there isn't a Quartermaster that would probably also be handled by the cook, at least for things not involving the main ships propulsion and defense systems.

Bland protein cubes for all! Glad to have you onboard megyn :) Welcome also to gangbanggirl, Carlyssir, and nothingbutspacejunk!

My wrench wench/party girl is up for peoples perusal. And everyone knows that the greyish pink protien cubes are the best. They taste like chicken...that had a baby with a cigarette...

Ooh, I love it that she likes the occasional drug use. That makes for so many hooks and explains why she's on a tramp like the St. Anne. Very clever!

I can play? I can play! dances in a circle

I was thinking of going one of two routes, either a shipborn girl who grew up to be a naval trooper before fleeing to outlaw space, or a designated marksman in a planetary military that had to flee after a particularly violent war turned bad for her faction. I'm thinking the first would come with a side of greasemonkey and the latter might overlap with that Quartermaster position megyn referenced - soldiers gotta have guns 'n ammo of course and one has to expand one's horizons after going criminal!

I was talking to Benny in PM, and I think Iona would sort of expect everyone to be a little crusty and with not entirely angelic backgrounds. Think tramp steamers of the 1930s.

So, either idea is a good one and in as big a place as a galaxy there's bound to be little brushfire wars going on all the time, making it possible for a lot of you to have that sort of background. I trust y'all to manage it smartly and don't think it will be a problem.

I am trying to decide the shipboard policy on being armed, but that's not going to be a dealbreaker either way.

Hellions, Hoodlums, and Hooligans the lot of us! I love it! The St. Anne is going to be an awesome ship to be a crew member of, and all Gods protect anyone that comes after our crew.

You guys and gals reckon we could simulate day and night on the ship via a 24 hour clock cycle where for 12 hours the lights are bright to simulate day and dimmed for the evening/night hours? Captain Beth, your thoughts?

I might be dating my self a little, but wasn't there a Star Trek:TNG episode where they did that? And Data was in charge because he doesn't sleep.

Engine Room on first watch eh? I hope El is prepared to get a lot of requests to bend over to reach tools and squeeze into tight corners to hand them to me :D

Elaine is lovely and tragic all at once. Thank you.

Great characters all around. Scoundrels. I feel like we should call in at Mos Eisley. :)

A very sensible idea, and they can also be programmed to simulate planetary side spectrums to promote minor things like, you know, Vitamin D production ; can't have us all come down with rickets. :)
