Hello! If you're viewing this thread I assume that you're drawn in by one of three things; D&D, Pathfinder or the lovely setting known as the Forgotten Realms. The purpose of this thread is to gather like minded people who are lovers of at least one of the aforementioned things, if not two, or better yet all three! I am interested in getting a group together to run a game based in the Forgotten Realms setting. We would use either D&D 3.5 or Pathfinder classes and rules, which we go with is up for discussion.

As for the game itself I am more than willing to act as the DM, but I'm also open to having a co-DM or someone else running it if they so desire. Honestly I'd love to have someone else as a co-DM, since that would make moving the plot along a bit easier and it wouldn't be entirely dependent on me.

There are a few pertinent details about the setting that I'd like everyone to know. First, our RP will be set before any of the events that take place according to 4th and 5th edition D&D timelines. Therefore we will be sticking to the 3rd edition geography. Some of the plots may even take place before the Time of Troubles.

For the plot I have a few different ideas right now.
  • Our characters have been hired to investigate odd happenings in the small city of Loudwater. But when they reach the outskirts of the town they discover that a pale mist has fallen over the place. Motes of “dust” float through the air and horrors out of nightmares haunt the streets. The party find themselves thrown into the midst of this and must figure out what is going on.
  • Thousands Away From Home : The Thousand Spears (a mercenary band of which are character are members or hire ons) find themselves far away from their normal territory the Dragon Coast hired by a prince of Mulhorand to help him overthrow the pharaoh. But in their first battle against the pharaoh's armies their patron is slain and his army disintegrated, save for the Thousand Spears. Stranded now many leagues from home, surrounded by enemies, the Thousand Spears (and our characters) must find a way to return home.
  • By Fire or Ice : A caravan moves slowly up the steep slopes of a pass, moving deeper into the mountain range known as the Spine of the World. Our characters are guards who have hired on to protect the merchants, clerics and settlers who are attempting to reach the Ten Towns. But disaster strikes and an avalanche sweeps most of the caravan away. The survivors are faced with a choice; it is impossible to return from whence they came, so they must either brave the cold frozen glaciers of the valleys or the caverns warmed by the fiery heart of the mountains.
  • The Temple of Sharess : Our characters are adventuring companions who are investigating some ruins (location to be determined). Little did they know that a temple dedicated to the goddess of hedonism, Sharess, was located within. Upon stepping into the blessed halls they feel a pull toward one another. Will this deity induced lust change how they view each other forever or create a schism that cannot be mended?
  • More to come!

RE: Forgotten Realms (3.5 D&D or Pathfinder)

Sounds interesting, I think I would prefer Pathfinder to DnD 3.5 (or if going with DnD 3.5 to stick to the SRD), but not a major issue.

I have never co-DMed before (have DM rarely) so not sure I could properly assist with that.

The plots seems decent also could see plenty of sub plots that might split from them which would allow for roleplaying and plotting rather than just dice rolling.

RE: Forgotten Realms (3.5 D&D or Pathfinder)

I would like to play possibly the arcane mage of the group or maybe healer

RE: Forgotten Realms (3.5 D&D or Pathfinder)

I would have to say that the Loudwater idea seems the most interesting, but all have potential. I would prefer Pathfinder and would be willing to co-GM. I love brainstorming ideas and helping manage things, though I admit I have never played Forgotten Realms. My DMs in the past always had their own worlds.

RE: Forgotten Realms (3.5 D&D or Pathfinder)

I am glad to see that this thread is garnering so much interest!

So it seems that so far most people prefer Pathfinder, which is my preference as well.

What kind of characters are you all thinking of playing as?

RE: Forgotten Realms (3.5 D&D or Pathfinder)

I'm fairly flexible, but can't play overly good or evil chars. I also tend to play hybrid classes and/or multiclass. I generally go human male as well, since the extra skill and feat help with versatility.

RE: Forgotten Realms (3.5 D&D or Pathfinder)

It sortof depends on how characters are generated (point buy and amount or rolling) as some different rolls might make some characters more interesting.

But ignoring that I am stuck between a few ideas at the moment:
The first idea is likely an Aasimar Paladin‎ (Oath of Chastity) - I would imagine her falling eventually (corruption, curses, mind control magic etc) so if I did go this route I would like to retrain the character at some point (maybe into a fighter of some kind - but that would depend on how the story developed) - as this would likely only end up being a hassle I probably will let logic scrap this idea but it sounds interesting and am happy to take the penalties for it (at the moment).
Other than that some kind of Rogue would be likely.

RE: Forgotten Realms (3.5 D&D or Pathfinder)

Very interesting indeed!

As far as stats are concerned, I'm a fan of rolling myself. Generally I do 4d6, dropping the lowest die, and have people roll 7 times, dropping their lowest score. You can place the ability score values into any of your stats that you want as well.

It sounds like we'll have an interesting mix. I'm a fan of multiclass characters myself, as I think it shows how life experiences can change a character's direction. I'm also rather intrigued by the idea of a paladin falling! I do allow paladins to exchange levels for antipalidin (I don't require them to be chaotic evil either).

RE: Forgotten Realms (3.5 D&D or Pathfinder)

If you consider that a paladin is basically a fighter/cleric hybrid, retraining that way kind of makes sense (3 levels fighter/1 cleric for every 4 of paladin). Additionally, the warpriest is pretty close in theme and abilities as well. Of course, cleric and warpriest have their code of conduct issues. Personally, I'm a big fan of transformed characters. Generally when I play brute types I write their history as magical dabblers who had transmutation experiments gone wrong (Sorcerers turned Bloodragers, for example).

I think the first two plot ideas strike me as having the most variety. Also, all seem to indicate non-green adventurers. What are your thoughts on level?

RE: Forgotten Realms (3.5 D&D or Pathfinder)

Ok think I will try with the Paladin and will see about getting a story written up - yea falling can be something to explore (could even stay good and fall, or might be able to break the Oath and recommit to general goodness and stay a paladin with an atonment spell or whatever, depending on how the story goes :), or could be possessed and turn horribly corrupt and hedonistic or anything in between).

Did the rolls here: https://rolz.org/dr?room=pathfinderrolls which seems to give me an 8, 10, 12 ,12, 16, 17

Not sure how I will allocate yet (that will depend on how the background goes when I am writting it - assuming that I can write one I am happy with).

Not sure that we would need to be higher level all adventurers need to start somewhere after all.
The first plot could be just on the face of it a simple fact finding exercise that turns into more - so could be hired by someone who just hasn't heard anything from a relative recently (or heard something odd). The second could have us as recent recruits etc.

Not opposed to higher levels (or even some people having different levels if it suits the backgrounds/DM needs) - but for myself I normally like to start at a lower level and work up depending on how the story goes.
But I don't think that a 1st level character needs to be too much of a strain with 3rd level characters for example (subject to stats etc).

RE: Forgotten Realms (3.5 D&D or Pathfinder)

Male witch from pathfinder okay? True nutral would be best for me I think. I am good with starting out at any level. Are their any house rules we should be aware of?

RE: Forgotten Realms (3.5 D&D or Pathfinder)

Dancrilis,
Those aren't bad stats, but they aren't well-suited for a class that uses every attribute. If interested, there are two paladin archetypes from Rogue Genius Games that give up spellcasting, detect evil, and aura of courage for improved combat abilities. If you did that, then you could put your 8 in Wis, making it a 10, which would leave your will save low enough for corruption without giving up a key class feature.

Regarding level, I just felt that the way some were worded implied a bit of established reputation. I may have misread, but I was thinking that our chars would need 1 or 2 levels under their belts to justify being hired to investigate a city, or allowed to join a prosperous merc company, or to be hired to guide and/or protect a large caravan traveling through difficult territory.

Lilithsboy,
I very rarely see witches played in pathfinder, so I would be all for it. Lots of utility and sneaky spells.

Rivine,
Were you wanting to play a char as well? Also, part of the reason I am throwing my two cents in a bit more than normal (I tend to do it regardless) is so you can see how my mind works and my views on things in case you were still considering my offer to co-GM.

As for my char, my rolls were 12, 14, 11, 15, 15, 12, which is great for a well-rounded support char.

I have a lot of different ideas mechanically, but they are all moderate to high skill types with decent combat and possibly moderate magic. Which one kinda depends on which plot idea we go with (as I want him to fit the setting) and whether or not you play a char as well. I mentioned the Rogue Genius Games packages, which remove a key class ability for minor, themeless ones. I love them because they remove the whole "this class is designed to fill this role and have this feel" aspect.

RE: Forgotten Realms (3.5 D&D or Pathfinder)

Well we have a fair bit to cover here!

Dancrills,
Those stats look good to me! With your racial bonus(es) some of those can get bumped up nicely I think.

Lilithsboy,
A neutral witch sounds interesting indeed! Go for it! It has been awhile since I've had someone want to play a witch.

Kckolbe,
I do plan on playing a character in the group (technically and NPC I suppose). Your stats look good as well.

A second post will be coming with some house rules and such as well!

RE: Forgotten Realms (3.5 D&D or Pathfinder)

Alright, here are some things you all need to know about how I like to run things.
  • For classes lets keep things to the core, base and hybrid classes found here, and antipaladin.
  • I would like to keep alternative class features to ones that are not from third party publishers, for simplicity sake.
  • Every character will have at least one drawback (up to 3) and at least three traits (up to 5 if you take all 3 flaws).
  • Each person will get a regional feat depending on where their character is from. Contact me to get the list of regional feats (which is limited) that is appropriate for the region your character hails from.
Well that's it for now. If I think of anything else I'll let you all know.

RE: Forgotten Realms (3.5 D&D or Pathfinder)

EDITED:

I am currently torn between 5 different set-ups (all different classes). Any would have decent knowledge skills (4 or 6+good Int bonus) and adequate combat ability, likely ranged, but depends on class. Really comes down to how the rest of the group looks. Thus far we are looking pretty versatile as well as non-standard, which is always nice to see. Rivine, if you any preferences for what you want to play, let me know.

RE: Forgotten Realms (3.5 D&D or Pathfinder)

Ah, pathfinder, a viable alternative to that holy of hollies that is 3.5, and have to say, interested in joining up, if you have room? Elf Wizard, as pathfinder also has rules for spell creation, along with the pathfinder lust rules.... could be a lot of magical fun :D

RE: Forgotten Realms (3.5 D&D or Pathfinder)

What Tenshi said. FR was a setting I always loved. Waterdeep bard / rogue reporting.

Only found out recently (as I was thinking about how to make the character with the stats rolled) that Wisdom isn't needed - pathfinder used Charisma for spellcasting for Paladins apparently.
I also like to mess with stats a bit so normally don't follow normal allotments :)

And on that ... here is Sune'lel (goes by Lel).
paladin1.jpg

Background Posted for ease (also on the sheet):
Born in the dalelands to a innkeeper and his wife, Sune'lel is named for the goddess Sune as her parents were overjoyed to have a child and noted her striking red hair as a sign of favour from the goddess. Her early life was spend playing and working within her families inn, a bright and bubbly child she took to singing and dancing at an early age.

Her parents however began to worry about her nature - noting oddities in her such as having no concerns regardless of how cold it got in winter, and no issues with darkness. They grew concerned that there child might be affected by something they know nothing about and consulted one of the adventurers that occassionally passed through the inn.

Examining the child and speaking to her parents the bard Elana determined that it was likely that her mother was decended from some celestial being and that some of the power was manifesting within the young girl - this revelation shocked the family and they began to imagine how she might be able to use her blessings to help others in the gods names.

Choosing to apprentice the child to Elana who was happy to take on a hireling to assist with performances, Lel learned her talants well and spend two years serving Elana - though she never adopted a level of cautious cynicism that her mentor thought appropriate for dealing with new people, where the bard believed in trust being earned the girl seemed to trust all she met - which caused her issues on occassion when people might ask for her help on things she should not help with.

If everything had played out normally the girl would likely have become a bard and dedicated herself to Sune as her parents imagined however her trusting nature lead her into a trap for her mentor.

Years before Elana had earned the ire of a being from the lower planes when she had distrupted its plan for a village within the Dales, seeing a method of striking back via targeting her protege the creature masked itself as an traveling merchant and befriended the young girl as she approached her teenage years, after speaking for a time and getting to know one another and the girls love of life the 'merchant' presented her with a ring to remember they were friends.

The ring sat on her finger as ornamentation for some time before but as she came of age a hidden power within it activated and bequeath some power onto the teenage. Elana having not taken note of the girls fashion before was shocked to note her student had now seemingly lost control of her hand which while not obviously malicious was certainly distracting to her occassionally seemingly engaged in harmless pranks against its owner, Elana sought out help from a friend of hers who she had adventured with years before a paladin of the Harmonious Order - Andras.

Whatever was occuring with the girl they were not able to undo - but her good nature did not seem compromised, and so after much discussion it was felt that given the nature of the enemy the carefree life of a bard might be detrimental to her development and so with a heavy heart Elana passed her training over to Andras while she sought to track down her old foe. The young woman who had only just came to puberty adopted something of a crush on the various people she met including her new mentor but these were warded them off as it was explaining that until they knew more about her affliction exploring her changing feelings might be problematic - this annoyed the young woman somewhat but she found solace in song and dance, occassionally using either as minor rebellions. But the Order was dedicated to a god of song after all so as outlets went it was an acceptable one.

Lel took to the training with difficulty - but she was also not as strong or tough as others and somewhat lacking in focus, she made up for these with raw force of personality and oddly enough her affected hand proved to be clear in protecting her guiding her training somewhat, it also helped that she could learn to notice powerful forces of evil when she was shown trials and the observation of justice. While she could still be manipulated she at least now could have some method of defending from the truely malicious. On the other hand her connection with whatever force was in her hand grew somewhat stronger as she did eventually offering advise on topic she knew little about.

Years past as she trained and before she took her oaths but shortly before she did so she had a visit from her old friend Elana who somewhat confirmed Andras warning her against relationships and sexual contact - something she had indicated that Lel may suffer if she gave into base needs. With Andras and Elana preaching to her for this she choose to include it in her paladin oaths to be sure she would stand by the warning.

Since than she has been traveling sometimes with a group and sometimes on her own to experience the world, enjoying music and dance where she can and always somewhat cautious about where she came from and what force might be within her - but without sensing poor intent from it she believes it may be able to be able to be a force for good.

Looks human (rather then a normal Aasimar) due to Scion of Humanity Aasimar alternative trait - thinking the possessed hand with the possessed trait is kindof interesting and allows for options down the line for hijinks :)

Hopefully I have removed most spelling mistakes etc, can rewrite some if you want me to include Dale town names etc.

RE: Forgotten Realms (3.5 D&D or Pathfinder)

We are still open! So all of those interested you are free to join up :)

Having problems with rolz.org, more accurately, nothing shows up. Will be trying to make a character, but....

Also, have to ask. Pathfinder Lust rules allowed?

Found a roller with some links. Also... I made me some awesome rolls ^-^

Wow! Definitely no shortage of interested folks. Not sure if Rivine has a limit in mind or not, but here's what we are potentially looking at so far.

Updated List:
Lilithsboy: Witch, male, neutral alignment
Dancrilis: Paladin, aasimar female, LG (I like that 16 in INT, wasn't expected at all)
Hyborian Gamergirl: Wizard (Exploiter), elven female, NE or CN
Tenshi: Unknown
Mystictiger: Rogue/bard, human male
Rivine: Unknown
Kckolbe: Unknown
Khan: Front line type (fighter/barbarian)

Dancrilis,
Good catch on the Charisma vs Wisdom. My knowledge was a bit obsolete it seems.

Horatio Hawkwinter is a charming, polite young man. At least that's what his parents think. As the child of a cadet branch of one of Waterdeep's noble families, there were certain expectations placed on him. Certain expectations that he could never meet. Where his family expected diligence, honesty, and hard work, he... was none of these. Given to games of chance, duels, and music, he was always the black sheep amongst a very very white flock. Much to the chagrin of his family he _earns_ his money through teaching swordplay, rhetoric, and music to the various families of Waterdeep. However, a recent misunderstanding has meant that he has had to flee the City of Splendours. Rapidly.

Using this site, mine are:

repeat 7 4D6H3 => 11 ; 18 ; 13 ; 16 ; 17 ; 13 ; 13

Species: Human
Class: Bard - Celebrity / Geisha : if we need a face
OR
Class: Swashbuckler : if you don't mind me being a wee bit silly and flashy
OR
Class: Rogue - Rake : somehwere between Face and Silly
OR
Class: Rogue : if you need me to Find And Remove Traps (FART)

And no, I'm not particularly good at optimising characters for in-game effects. I just go with ideas / concepts that I enjoy.

EDIT: I see that Lel has got diplomacy covered. I'll go for something a wee bit different.

Neutral Evil or Chaotic Neutral, Exploiter Archetype by the way. Hedonistic, Vain and Power-Hungry Drackbacks, combined with the Domineering and Rich Parents traits? She's going to be a bit of a bitch, who KNOWS she is smarter then the rest, and would have no issues corrupting that lovely little paladin herself.

Her alignment is mostly to reflect that she is selfish and considers only what she wants, and has no shame or modesty, more then willing to force others into doing what she wants.... though she would hardly kill someone over things, unless her own life was in danger.

Edit; Lyre Gilrel still some things to do, but she is almost ready.... and she hails from Evermeet, which she left to pursue her... hobbies.

I'd like to join as well if still recruiting :)
will come up with a concept shortly
