Cara Ó Nuallain sighs heavily as she lifts the heavy basket of laundry. Her black dress sticks to her as she carries it up the stairs. This house is too large. Ach, it's nearly a castle! 7 bedrooms, informal and formal dinning rooms...She shakes her head. Her home is two rooms. The living room with the stove and the bedroom she shares with her sister and parents.

She sighs as she sits the basket down in the master bedroom. The bloody Germans demand only the best and this one makes her change his bed daily. She doesn't even own sheets! Cara sighs again, resting her hand on her aching back before she begins to strip the large feather bed.

She's grumbling to herself, trying to pretend the sounds aren't coming from her empty stomach as she works. It doesn't take her long before she's remade his bed perfectly and is carrying the dirty linens down.

Luckily, thankfully, she's not the one who has to wash them. No, today is Saturday. Today she polishes the silver so it's shinning for Sunday dinner. Cara presses a hand against her aching belly as she sets the silver set out. “quiet. 5 more hours and I'll be home.”

To do a through and good job polishing the silver, Cara is allowed to sit. She settles at a unused corner table in the kitchen and begins to work the silver. Even one fork would feed her family for a week. No, Cara quickly pushes those thoughts away. She knows what they do to thieves.

She shudders and pushes her hair back before replacing the silver carefully. Next on her list is dusting. Cara hates this job. It puts her in close proximity to him. He's the Governor of this little province and he always gets his way. His way often includes women. They used to have some independence here but after the bread riots....Well, the Germans took notice and realized how valuable their ironworks was. Of course, the factory is closed, but their working on reopening it. Just another thing the Germans will take.

It's been 6 months now and this German already has a reputation for cruelty.
Any resistance, any word against the Fuhrer is punished terribly. Perhaps someday things will get better. Things are already better from last winter. The price of coal and wood is down, winter won't be as cold. Meat's almost affordable again...

Her thoughts are broken as a stern word sends her scurrying to the study. He's working there but this is the last room to dust before she goes home.

Cara ducks her head as she enters and moves to the far end of the room to focus on the books. Perhaps if she ignores him, he'll ignore her. He hasn't seemed to have noticed her yet, and she's been working here a week. She glances briefly at him, a terrified look before she turns back to the shelf. He seems busy, to be ignoring her. Thank god! She might actually be safe!
