"Remember to hand in your papers next monday when we convene again, and don't forget that finals are in two weeks. So studying should have already begun and be in full swing. Though I'm certain some of you will ignore me and wait until the last minute. All I have to say regarding that, is be sure you get an A, with that it mind. We're adjourned for the day."

The professor had finished wrapping up, and the students quickly filed out of the lecture hall. Most had no more classes for the day, and were desperate to either get to their dorms, or to whatever social gathering would merit their appearance that evening. The fall term was wrapping up at Dartmouth, and there was a palpable amount of tension in the air. Between term papers, finals, and whatever all might cause stress, many of the students were living on two hours of sleep and red bull. From the door exited a darker skinned girl, who walked off from the room and made her way back to the door building for the night. She, unlike some of her peers, had every intention of studying and finishing her paper so she had minimal stress by the time the finals had wrapped up.

It was a twenty minute walk back to her dorm across the sprawling campus, and the fall air was chilly to her skin. Shivering and wrapping her leather clad around tight around herself, she mustered the strength to march across the historic campus and finally to the more modern dorm building where she lived. Unlocking the door, she stepped into the main living area and set down her bag and purse. going to the tiny kitchen, she went to the fridge and grabbed a soda, before going to sit on the couch and pull out her books and lap top. "I so hate this crap." she complained to herself as she began working on a study outline, her term paper already on the first draft stage.

The young woman's name was Sofia Daniella Yolanda Garcia. The daughter of the US ambassador to Colombia, she herself was descended from great grandparents who had hailed from that South American nation. Her father's connections as an ambassador had helped secure her entry to the university. Though her grades and test scores had by no means hindered her. Already her future was being planned. Sofia was being groomed by her family to enter the legal field. Her father had been an attorney in New York before having been elevated to his position. His dream was that she would follow along and enter the profession as he had decades earlier.

Not one to disobey her family's wishes, the young latina was pre law and just a year and a half away from law school. Already she was beginning to think of that future, considering schools and what subset of the legal field she might enjoy working in. With this future goal in mind, she worked hard to ensure that she would have her pick of law schools. Virtually all of her time outside of class was spent studying and planning for the future. What little time she had left was usually spent with her dorm-mate. Or in raw occasions, her boyfriend Ricardo would travel up from Harvard to stay for the weekend. Though he was a senior and set to graduate and enter the business field. So he too had been busy of late with his finals.

After her study outlines had been completed, Sofia decided to take a break and work on her term papers later that night. Turning on the Tv, she flipped though the channels and sipped at her soda. Wondering when her dorm-mate would be back for the evening.

“And now, I am going to have to stay up late to study, thanks to you. I have a whole bunch of assignments that are due, and that too, all at the same time!” Priyanka texted her boyfriend, Amir, as she sat in the back of a cab after receiving a good night text message from him. She had gone on a dinner date with her boyfriend because it was something they were planning for the longest time. Their timings mismatched for the past few weeks since either one of them were always busy. If she had some time to spare in some weekend, Amir was busy with work and vice versa. So, it was a decided by Amir and later proposed to her that he was wanting to treat her to a dinner in a city later in the day. He had some time to spare that day since it wasn’t a busy day at work and Priyanka only had to study, which she could easily do so after dinner date. She’d just have to stay up a little longer than usual in able to do so.

The time was in a crunch as the finals were approaching and yet another fine semester was coming to an end. She couldn’t believe how fast the time has moved as she was in her junior year now. It seemed like yesterday when she visited the campus with her parents for some charity works. She knew where she wanted to go right in that moment and a year later, she was a freshman at Dartmouth.

The street lights made bursts of light flow through the window and splash across her face in a rhythmic pattern. She looked out the window as she took in the sight of the campus at night as the cab hauled through the campus grounds and towards her fancy dorms. She was majoring in finance. She always had interest in the field because how much she was influenced by her parents, father the most. He was a shrewd businessman, still is, and she grew up watching him. The wealth and the name they’ve earned, she knew she’d have to live up to it. The time has come now as she was the only child and all eyes were on her. She could already feel the burden of it…though, she was glad that she still had some time before she has to join Gupta Industries.

Therefore, she wanted to make the rest of her college years as much funful and memorable as she could. Technically, she was already being a bad girl by actually dating a guy. Her parents wouldn’t approve of her dating and up until she finished her high school, she only had crushes and never a boyfriend. It certainly changed once she got to the college and had met a few great guys. She’s been in a relationship with Amir for almost 6 months now. Of recently, they haven’t had the chance to spend as much time together because of his job and she, her studies. He’s three years older than her and already working at a firm in the city. She met him through one of her good friend, Mira. Well, Amir is Mira’s older brother and they’d met at Mira’s birthday last year. Ever since then, they started talking at first and then it was hanging out, finally, they were dating. Who knows where this will go. One thing was certain, her parents had no idea of this and she was planning to keep it that way for now. Her studies were her priority and nothing could come before that.

While she was having a great time at Dartmouth, she really had very bad experiences with roommates in the past. Third year, this semester was the first time she actually felt that she had a decent roommate. The first year, her roommate was another Indian girl and she was so stuck up. The girl literally thought that she was the most beautiful girl in the world. A whole year with her seemed like a torture and that’s why, she spent most of her time in the library or hanging out with her other Indian and Asian friends. She only went back to get a good night’s sleep. Speaking of which, lot has changed this year. She’s gotten to enjoy studying at her dorms rather than library. Many times, her roommate and she had stayed up at night to study and if not that, to keep each other some company just for the heck of it.

She thought her father was some big shot, the sole owner of Gupta industries that was well known in the world of business and finance. She learned in second week with her new roommate, Sofia, that her father was the US ambassador to Colombia. One thing was obvious…they both came not only from solid families with strong structural background but a cultural background as well. Priyanka was very young when her parents had shifted from Europe to the States and established a business in NYC. He started small and now, it’s become an empire. Though, he’s a businessman, he has connections with almost everyone you can think of. Not only that, he’s the president of Indian Community that’s richly based in the Tri-state area and all over the States. They always held on to their cultural values and beliefs and that’s exactly what they passed on to their daughter. The whole reason why they were strict parents to begin with, no dating policy and pushing her to be her best by educating herself well. That’s why she wasn’t like many of those children who decides to wild out the moment they get some freedom at college. She knew her limits as she’d always been stuck in between two cultures which were two extremes on a spectrum. One allowed freedom and other, restraints. Though, growing up in the States, she’s learned to take a bit of both cultures to make it work for her.

She flipped through her text messages in her phone again, thinking she would call Sofia and see what she was up to. But, she didn’t as she was only two blocks away. Instead, she gathered her belongings and took out a few bills of twenties to pay the cab. Finally, her ride came to a stop right in front of a tall building. It was one of the new dorm buildings and she was glad that she gets to share it with a nice roommate like Sofia. Since the weather was turning colder, she paid the cabbie before exiting the cab and then made a quick run to enter the dorm lobby. The security guy at the desk would recognize her as one of the resident, smiling softly and nodding at her. She returned a nod of acknowledgment as she hopped into an elevator and once she arrived to her floor, she made her way to her dorm room, one hand in her purse to pick out the room key. She finally put it in and unlocked the door, entering a nice cozy place which made her feel at home.

Faint sound of television could be heard and even though she wasn’t trying, she was awfully quite as she entered. The entrance had a small 6 foot entrance hall which allowed a clear view of the living room corner where TV was mounted on the wall. Sofia was obviously in the dorm and so, Priyanka slowly shut the door without making too much noise. Any sounds that her heels made couldn’t be heard over the TV and so she slowly peeked from the hallway, into the living room and found her roommate watching TV while sipping on a can of soda. That’s when she plunged forward and shouted, “Boo!” It was in that moment, her roommate would spot the Indian girl jumping forward. She was in her casual black jeans and a thick sweater top with a top underneath. Despite being it all casual, she looked fancy as she completed her looks with a pair of black matching heels. She came plopping down onto the couch besides her roommate as she propped up her heels onto the table in front of her, a smile lingering on her face. She looked over to her friend, Sofia, finding her expressions pretty much lovely as she was in shock.

Once she had finally finished her studying and outlining, Sofia knew she needed to work some more on her term papers. Of yet, she had a perfect 4.0 GPA, and had every intention of keeping that number. She took a full course load, and her constant studying and lack of real social life outside of her roommate and boyfriend meant she had plenty of time to devote to her classes. As suck, Sofia had a reputation among some for being a boring bookworm. Though, that was an unmerited assumption. While she was indeed a driven bookworm, she was by no means boring. But her focus from school was always lifted at three points in the year. Winter break, spring break, and the summer. It was during those times that the more vibrant side of Sofia came out. The side that would drink a whole bottle of tequila and spend the night making empanadas. It was a side that Priyanka, her roommate, had yet to see.

But with winter break swiftly approaching, it was possible that side of the young latina may yet be revealed. Her parents were in Colombia, as her father was working out a issue between the US and that nation regarding the cocaine production and smuggling that had begun to manifest in America. As such, Sofia wouldn't be going home to her family's house in Maryland. Or flying down to Colombia, as her father wouldn't see much of her during that time anyways. So in just a short time, she would be one of the few that remained on campus during the almost month of vacation.

Taking a brief break, the young woman went to the fridge and began to make herself some dinner. Not feeling like cooking a large meal, she made a quick sandwich and heated up some soup on the small stove. Returning to the couch, she ate slowly, casually watching the TV and also reading news on her laptop at the same time. When finished with her meal, she did her dishes, grabbed a bottle of water, and attacked her term papers with renewed vigor.

Flipping back and forth between the research and the papers themselves, she powered through and was soon finishing with a second draft of the four papers that were due. Sighing in contentment, she closed her laptop, and sprawled out length ways across the couch. Sipping the soda she'd opened earlier, she gasped and jumped when she Priyanka snuck up on her. "GAH!!!" the dark haired woman shrieked, jumping from her seat and spinning around. Her heart thundered in her chest, and an irritated expression built upon her face. "Really Priyanka?" she growled. She had accidentally flung her soda, covering herself in it.

Rolling her eyes, Sofia went to her bedroom and then slipped off her soaked clothing and put on some loose silk pajamas. Coming back to the living room, she sat on the couch crossed legged and smiled. "So how was your date with Amir?" she asked politely. Even though she was a bit irritated with Priyanka's joke, she did still consider the woman her friend. They had become fast friends ever since meeting the first time, and Sofia was genuinely interested in the dark haired woman.

Priyanka was more of a laid back girl when it came to studying. She usually waited until the last minute to start studying for her exams or to work on a paper, let the pressure build up and that's when she's at her best. Every time, she'd come out acing her exams and that's why a few of her friends actually envied her for it. She knew that one day it's going to cost her something big. Her GPA was almost perfect, 3.97, and this semester also seemed promising. That's why she was a little worry-free at the moment. She was very much into socializing but only with people whom she gets along with really well. As for her roommate, she yet had to get there. They were close but not as close. They were still learning a thing or two about one another over the time. It's just that their third year was when they took their main curriculum classes and both had quite a load this semester and that's why, Priyanka, for one, was looking forward to their winter break!

Speaking of a break, she still wasn't fully sure as to what she might be doing during her winter break. It's either she stay here and get bored or go home to get bored even more since her parents weren't going to be around during the winter. If she stayed here, at least she may have company since Sofia was probably not going home either. Priyanka wasn’t convinced just yet. Though, if she stayed back, she would still want to go somewhere, for a weekend or a few days, just to get out of here. The real planning would come once she actually decides what she’s going to do for the break.

The dark haired beauty wasn’t expecting such a reaction from her roomie, watching the girl shriek and jump out of her seat. The room filled with laughter as Priyanka couldn’t contain it, finding this whole picture funny and even funnier was how Sofia had spilled some soda on her top. “Oops!” She said as she flopped down on the couch besides her friend and pulled her legs back, to let her friend pass so she can clean herself up. While Sofia disappeared into the room, Priyanka started cleaning up a few drops that had landed on her papers. Once she was done, she waited for her friend to return, “It’s not my fault that you spilled your soda. Guess you don’t know how to drink after all!” she shouted so her comment would reach Sofia.

“Don’t you look a little cute in your PJs.” She said as she watched the girl return to join her onto the same couch. “Ahh it was good. The usual. He talked about his work and all. I had to cut it short because I was getting bored and I also have a lot to study!” She said and frowned, “Are you planning to stay up late? Because if you are, I would stay here and study. If not, I’ll hit the library.” She asked her since the library hours are usually extended during the exam period. She nudged Sofia with her elbow, leaning into her to push her with shoulder to shoulder, “How about I make some coffee for you….you tell me when you want one. My treat…” she told Sofia, trying to make up for what had just happened. “You have to agree though, you were scared!” she tried to contain her laughter, though she’d smile wider if she’d succeed in making Sofia smile as well.

Priyanka stretched, throwing her arms over her head, taking a second to relax before she grabbed her bag that was near the couch. She pulled out a book and opened it to where she’d bookmarked. She leaned back after removing her heels, hearing them fall to the floor as she propped her bare feet onto the edge of the table and then placed her book on her thighs, “This is going to be a long night Sofia. Get comfortable…aren’t you glad that I am keeping you company? I came back early thinking you’d need it.” She teased and joked with her roomie.

Sitting down, Sofia rolled her eyes a bit and playfully nudged Priyanka back. "It's my fault for keeping my back turned. But your fault for trying to play poltergeist on me." she complained, her scowl morphing into an easy smile. Since the two had first met at the beginning of the semester, a fast friendship had sprung up. Coming from somewhat similar backgrounds of powerful families, Sofia had felt that Priyanka was a kindred spirit. Very early on, they had gotten to know each other and share details about each other's lives. They had even gone on a double date a couple of times. Though that was rare occurrence given their schedules and the even more crazy schedules of their respective boyfriends. Both of them were in a similar boat in that regard. Ricardo was so busy with his work and studies at Harvard. Already he was being courted by Goldman Sachs, and his aspirations to become a real life Gordon Gecko type meant that he rarely came to see Sofia. In many respects, their relationship was based more on a power connection than it was on love or feelings.

It wasn't as if Sofia didn't care for Ricardo, but she definitely didn't love him in a romantic way. But that wasn't something that was a major focus in the Garcia family. Her father had helped facilitate the introduction with Ricardo initially, and it was he who hoped the two would yet marry. In many ways, it was the only thing in her life that Sofia wished her father didn't attempt to emphasize his will into. The young latina had dreams and aspirations of her own, and one such dream was to find a romantic lover. Someone who wasn't just a good partner from a business standpoint as her father wished. But someone who she could confide in, trust, adore, and give her heart fully to. Ricardo just wasn't that person, though Sofia wished he was. He was a nice man, and would make a decent husband. But he just wasn't the person she longed to give her heart to.

Truthfully, she wasn't sure where her own feelings lay. There was really only one person she felt close to on a more intimate level. And that person sat but feet from her.

"I know where you're coming from." Sofia said with a sigh. "Every time I see Ricardo, he just wants to talk about Wall Street and how he hopes he'll make partner by thirty. I try not to roll my eyes, but every time he talks mergers and acquisitions, I struggle not to fall asleep. Don't even get me started about when I visited him in New York over the summer. I hardly saw him, and spent most of my time waiting around when he promised to entertain me." Sighing, Sofia raised her eyes at Priyanka's coffee challenge.

"Oh? are you going to make some super strong coffee?" Sofia giggled back. "You do remember that I'm almost pure Colombian? I might sounds like an American, but I can drink coffee with the best of them. So do your worst if you think you can best me in that regard! Hehe!!!!" It was true that Sofia had an almost unlimited caffeine resistance. Growing up, she had coffee with almost every meal, and as such had grown to become borderline addicted to the rich black liquid. Still drinking almost a full pot to this day. Though she much preferred espresso or coffee from a french press.

Nodding her head, she smiled to her friend. "Well it is the weekend," the dark haired Latina said with a smirk. "So I have no classes tomorrow. I was thinking of staying up for a while. I'm almost done with my papers and studying, so I'm probably going to be free all day tomorrow and Sunday. What about you?"

Closing down her computer, Sofia put the device away in her room and then came back to sit down and hang out with the closest friend she had. "A long night huh?" the Latina giggled, nodding to the book in her roommate's hand. "I suppose it could be in a way. Unless you aren't really planning on reading that?" Part of her hoped that the beauty would put the book down. She so enjoyed their late night talks. Priyanka was the only person Sofia told any secrets to. The only person she trusted enough.

The dusky beauty exaggerated her fall to the other side on the couch when her friend nudged her, “Ouch!” She said with a smile on her face, “I disagree Ms. Garcia. Your accusations are invalid.” She spoke in a language that she maybe fond of considering Sofia was going into a law school after her undergrad. “You’d agree I’d make a sexy ghost!” She teased back and smiled wider when her friend morphed her scowl into a smile. Priyanka loved how they were able to get along with so much ease. She still remembered her first year, she’d come home all in jolly mood only to be let down by her moody roommate. That wasn’t fun and it affected her mood more or less. Now that she was with Sofia, her mood turns even jollier when she come home. Such little things mattered, especially when you’re away from your family. She went from spending lot of time with her other friends and out of her dorm to spending less time with her friends and in her dorm. Out and in her dorm only meant that she spent and preferred spending time with her roommate, Sofia.

Sometimes you just want to tell your deepest and darkest secrets with someone you just met and that’s how it had happened between the two. They didn’t need to know each other for long time in able to bond of such secrets. It was only their first week in and she shared with Sofia how hectic her relationship had been with her boyfriend. It was something she hadn’t shared with her closer Indian friends and here, Sofia now knew it, early on in their friendship. It was true, something you just happen to bond with the person as if you just click. And they clicked.

As for Priyanka and her boyfriend, she didn’t know exactly why she was with him. He was the first and nicest guy she met after coming to college. He was also a brother of one of her friends and such convenience had played a factor more or less. Priyanka was more of a laid back girl and so, she let things between her and Amir take its course. Or anything in her life for that matter. Priyanka gazed at her friend, turning to look at her while she was saying something, hearing it, she broke into a light laughter, “Oh god, I forgot about your little trip with him to the city. You do know what I am talking about!” She sat up to look at her friend, turning in her seat a little, “It was a dilemma for me tonight. I did get away, making an excuse for my studies. Now, that I am here, I am feeling a bit lazy.” She grunted softly, clearly visible on her face that she didn’t want to study.

She knew that a comment was coming her way when she said something about making some coffee, “I can…” she said and looked at the paper bag she brought back from her date. “You are? A Colombian? I thought you were….never mind!” She teased her a little more and added, “That blows. How can you gain caffeine resistance? That only leaves me as your way of staying up at night. Don’t you just love it? Lucky you because I don’t mind keeping you some company. You better not become resistant to me!” She said and reached for Sofia’s throat as if threatening her with her motion but not follow through. Priyanka was already feeling lazy to settle down and start studying, but she did anyway. “What? Free for the whole weekend?”

Priyanka asked her roommate when she closed the lid of her computer and then walked away to put it away in her room. She flicked her dark flocks over her shoulders and looked at Sofia as she returned back to take a seat next to her, “I, for once, was trying to finish studying beforehand. I have an exam on Tuesday.” She pouted her lips, thinking something for a few seconds, “Some friend you are! You should be encouraging me to study…” She snapped the book shut. It wasn’t a big deal because she only needed some excuse and Sofia was that excuse. “What makes you think I am not planning to read that book…” she tossed it on the table in front of her, “But, I guess I can give you company while you stay up.” She passed of a wicked grin, “Just don’t make me regret putting away my book.”

She leaned over the hand rest and peeked into a paper bag. There was a half a bottle of wine that she’d brought back after having dinner with Amir. It was an expensive one and he had plenty alcohol back at his apartment. She, on the other hand, was still underage for legal drinking age, just like Sofia. She gave her a teasing gaze, leaning over the hand rest to shuffle it out of her bag, “Now, we have two options.” The options were obvious, settle for coffee or finish the rest of the bottle of fine wine. “So what’s up for the winter break? I, for one, have no idea what I am doing!” She exhaled forcefully as she placed the bottle on the table that was in front of them, letting Sofia decide if she wanted a warm cup of coffee or some wine. She leaned towards Sofia and placed her head on her shoulder as if settling in finally relax now it’s the end of the day and she was with someone she felt comfortable around.
