RE: Goldilocks And The Three 'Bears' - Quix and Cyanide

The sun peeked in through the window, illuminating the small bedroom in it's soft golden glow. Inside it a girl lay, already with her bright blue eyes open, her delicate hands working nervously through thick golden hair that was fanned out upon her pillow. Other than her cotton undies and wrap around her breasts she was bare, with porcelain like skin, with only a few light freckles marring it across her nose. She lay there in silence and waited as the sun brightened her room, all the while dread grew in the pit of her stomach.

Goldilocks rose as the first rooster cawed outside her window, maybe twenty minutes later; the cock was up, which meant the farm was up. She was quick to dress-- soft leather breeches and a simple linen tunic, with dark riding boots pulled up to her thighs. With a leather band she heaved her mass of locks into a tail that trailed gold down her back. 'Perhaps', she mused mentally, 'If I'm fast enough, I won't have to deal with him--'

Her thoughts were cut short as her bedroom door creaked open without her bidding and even before she turned she knew who it was: Step-Father. The man was obviously much older than she, with a round face covered in wrinkles and beady black eyes. What little dark hair he had was limply hanging off his nearly bald head. He was thickset as well, and waddled when he walked. As soon as he saw she heard him he threw the door open with a huge grin plastered on his face. "Goldi!" He cried joyously, moving to try and take her into his arms-- she quick stepped back. That grin faltered a moment and his beady eyes narrowed at her. "Now that's no way to treat me, you know." Instantly that grin was back, and the dread in her stomach began to write and twist. "You do know what day it is, right?" He continued, not seeing, or not caring about the evident horror on her face.

"Yes," she spoke softly, her voice as sweet as honey.

"Yes father," he stressed with a twitch of his lips. "Well, I suppose we can change that now. Hmm? Yes husband is much more pleasing to the ear," he purred, closing the gap she created in one stride and trapping her between the bed and the wall.

Bright blue eyes darted from side to side as she looked for an escape-- this was the man who stole her mothers heart, married it, then let it die from "disease". "I need to care for the chickens, father," she spoke softly still, before pushing past him faster than he could react. Once out of the house she felt hot tears running down her face. Now she was truly doomed. It was bad enough being his 'daughter' and having to ward off his advances, but as his wife? She'd have no right. That dread exploded into panic as she stepped into the chicken coop, quickly gathering the eggs from the night.

'But what can I do?' Goldie asked herself silently. And when the thought hit her, it hit so fast and hard she dropped the egg she was gathering and it splattered on her boots. There she stood, stunned for nearly ten minutes, just processing what her brain told her. 'Run.' It said, a horse whisper in her ear that made goosebumps cross her skin. 'Could it.. could it work?' She doubted, for just a moment, before she dropped her basket of eggs and took off at a sprint.

She ran until her breathing was so hard that tears were leaking from her eyes. Her sprint had to have taken her at least a few miles away, she told herself as she began to slow, palms going to her knees so she could catch her breath. "Where will I go?" Goldie asked aloud to the woods she had ended up in.. she had to admit she was sort of lost. None of it looked familiar, though she was certain this was as far as she'd ever been. Suddenly she was doubting her decision, but just as suddenly she noticed something between the trees. She squinted a moment before a grin spread across her face; a cabin lay just beyonf the treeline. It was mere moment before she was there, creeping up the front steps carefully-- even a young girl like her knew to be at least a little cautious. Delicately she rapped her knuckles on the door, but was greeted by silence. Again she knocked..with no response.

With a quick glance in each direction the girl straightened and tugged on the front door, and was surprised to hear the latch click and the door open. "Hello?" She called out into the dark cabin...

Behind her the sun was coming over the trees, basking their plot of land in warmth and life. One last time she glanced around, checking that no one was watching, before stepping through the threshold into the unlocked home.

What a way to spend her birthday.

RE: Goldilocks And The Three 'Bears' - Quix and Cyanide

The sun beat down from the noon sky as the three men, hot and tired from the morning spent tilling their neighbour's fields, made their final purchase from the market stall, and began the journey home. The three strode leisurely along the dirt path - a freshly slaughtered pig slung over one's shoulders as a treat for dinner - beneath the thick canopy of leaves. It was cooler here, and the relaxing sounds of birds chirping in the trees, and small forest animals foraging for food, along with the knowledge that work was done for the day, had them in a jovial mood.

At first glance they could be taken for siblings. It wasn't until approached more closely that you'd notice, despite his youthful appearance, that the barrel-chested male who walked a step ahead was of considerably greater age. A Father and his two sons. The Patriach was Rupert Bear, more commonly known as Papa, who stood at 6'2, with a thick mass of curly brown hair atop his head. His forearms were the size of hams, his hands rough and calloused, and his skin weathered by the sun. He carried not an ounce of fat. A large man, Rupert could intimidate by size alone. However, not those who had spent time with him, and heard the laugh which emanated deep in his belly before it erupted from his mouth, nor those who weren't too taken by his breadth and width to be able to notice the way his deep brown eyes crinkled with warmth and good humour. Bear by name, bear by size, but not by nature. Unless provoked.

His two sons, Edmund and Walter, had inherited his bulk, though neither had yet reached his height. They were men, but still young, and had growing to do. Attired, as he was, in linen breeches and shirts of varying hues, with woollen vests, the boys facial features were alike enough to Rupert's for there to be no doubt the three were related, but there were also noticeable differences. Walt, the youngest, was smaller, his shoulders not quite as broad, and he had inherited his Father's chocolate brown eyes, and curled, dark-chestnut hair. Edmund was destined to be larger than even Papa, and, in contrast to Rupert and Walt, his eyes were green, and hair a raven black. Like his mother, Genevieve.

Genevieve. The conversation and laughter died down as they entered a clearing, and their dwelling came into view. As always, Papa felt a mixture of sadness and contentment as he looked upon it. This was the house he'd slept in every night of his life since he was a boy, and where he'd enjoyed many happy times. When he was but six years of age, he'd helped his own Pater, Humphrey, build it. The child had cut down the trees, sawed the branches into pieces, and hammered in the nails, with his very own hands. Or at least that's how he remembered it. The cottage hadn't changed in all that time, apart from the regular application of fresh coats of paint. It was two-stories tall, with a thatched roof, and constructed entirely of forest wood. The exterior was painted a bright yellow, except for the door, which was a 'just as bright' red.

Inside, a small foyer opened onto a spacious living area, where the family spent most of their time. They'd rest on the two wooden benches covered in sheep-skin, which faced the open hearth, and sit up all night, reading, talking, laughing, eating, and occasionally drinking. Off to one side lay a kitchen where Mrs Bear used to cook - duties now shared by the three men -, and hidden away in the opposite corner, behind more doors, were separate area for ablutions, and laundering. To the back sat the Master bedroom, the highlight of which was the four-poster bed Papa had fashioned himself. A narrow flight of curved stairs led from the kitchen to the second floor, where both boys had their own rooms. From there they could view the thick forest on one side, and the green valleys - where the Bear's allowed their goats and cows to roam free - on the other.

It was beautiful, and a place of great joy, but also one of sorrow, for it was where his wife had died. For a brief period, after Genevieve had succumbed to a bout of pneumonia, just on three years ago, and Papa was in the worst of his grief, he'd thought of leaving. To avoid the constant reminder of what would he'd miss so terribly. However, he knew he never would, it held too many good memories as well. Though, if that had been the decision he'd taken, he could have afforded it. In the back garden, untouched for thirty years, was buried a trove of gold coins.

The coins had been a gift to his Father, from the Queen of a Faraway Land. A modest man was Humphrey, and it wasn't until Rupert's teen years, only a week before his parents were taken by the plague, that he'd regaled his son with the story. Rupert had learned how his Father had risked death, dismemberment, torture, and worse. Of how he'd defeated a legendary troll, and rescued a princess from a tower protected by a vicious ogre. His Father had defeated the ogre, too, after a battle which lasted for days, and returned the young lady to her rightful place, as heir to her Country's throne. Humphrey had rejected all honours and accolades - after all, it had been an adventure, what more reward was required? - and accepted the gift of gold coins only reluctantly.

The treasure had been be-quested to Rupert, as had the Cottage, with the stipulation that he'd know the right time to make use of it. Papa secretly yearned for the same opportunity to adventure that his Father had taken, and a chance to replicate his heroic deeds. However, times had changed, and there no longer existed Princesses to save, ogres to defeat, dragons to slay, or giant beanstalks to climb. Though it made the world a safer place, a better place, it didn't stop Rupert from sometimes wishing there were. Little did he know wrong his assumption was, and what the future would hold.

"Papa, did you forget to shut the door?"

Rupert was brought of his reverie by his youngest son's voice. His head whipped around, then his eyes followed the direction of a pointed finger, and he saw what Walter had seen. The front door was ajar, and Papa felt a deep anger begin to build in his massive chest. The three men dropped the produce they carried, onto the grass, and the same thought passed through each of their minds. Papa never forgot to close the door, and it was too sturdy and secure to have unlatched itself. That could mean only one thing. It had been done by someone else. Who would be so stupid, or desperate, as to enter their home uninvited, and attempt to steal their possessions?

"Edmund, around the back. If whoever it is, is still there, we don't want them to escape". Papa's booming voice shook with fury as he directed his elder son. The boy followed the order without hesitation.

"Let us see who it is, who dares disrespect the privacy of our home". Rupert grabbed his youngest son by the collar, and began to drag him towards the partially opened door.

The Bear had been poked. This was not going to be pretty.

RE: Goldilocks And The Three 'Bears' - Quix and Cyanide

That day she gorged herself on stolen food-- as much as a girl who weighed a whole 110 pounds could, at least. Originally when she had crept in the idea was to ruse whomever was there and beg their help in getting away from her vile step-father, but when she checked every room and found them to be empty of life.. she felt like celebrating.

So, with a little cheer in her step, she bounded around the kitchen and stole tiny bites of food from it. The hearth had been recently lit, she noted as she sliced a healthy portion of cheese for herself, nibbling on the creamy goodness as she continued her search of the house. Now that she was certain she was alone she felt a little braver checking out each room. Goldie lay across the benches and rolled herself in the sheepskin cover, imagining the huge fire that the open-faced hearth could hold, then she bounded from room to room and jumped on each bed individually-- though she was polite enough to take her shoes off and tuck them off behind the front door.

Lost in gleeful bliss, Goldie nearly missed the sound of approaching voices, but when she did she tumbled gracelessly from the bed. Panic filled her in a moment. Was it her step-father? Had he tracked her? Did he start a search party? Had she been seen? For a moment, as the voices crept closer she didn't know what to do. again her instincts told her to flee, but her body was frozen to the spot, on the far side of the huge four poster bed.

The front door creaked open and she threw herself under the bed, the first thing her mind could think of at that time. Tiny hands clamped over her own mouth as she wiggled under, hoping to hide in the very centre. 'Now what?' She asked herself, now that the hiding spot was taken care of, her brain was free to think of the next move. 'Wait for them to sleep and sneak out?' She shrugged mentally and stored the idea, it might be the only one.

Now that she was curled under the huge bed, she finally remembered she forgot one little thing: her boots behind the front door.

Goldie swallowed hard. She was doomed now.

Papa released his grip on Walt's lapel as they approached the door, and lifted one to finger to his lip in a gesture that told his son remain silent. Stealthily, they approached the entrance, and Papa warily pushed the door the rest of the way open, and stepped over the threshold. The foyer was empty, as was the living room, but from the far side came a noise.

The two men tensed, then hurried further in, to see the Laundry door opening. Their held their breath, then both exhaled loudly at the same time as Edmund stepped into view. He'd entered through the back door. "No-one outside, Papa". His eyes darted around the room, then widened as they came to rest upon the sheep-skin covered benches. The tone of his voice evidenced his surprise. "But it appears someone has been sitting on our sofa".

Papa had noted that himself, and though angry at the invasion of privacy, he displayed no sign of the nerves that were in Edmund's tone. Men of his age and size didn't frighten easily. "Indeed it does. Boys, go check upstairs"

"Okay, Papa". Walt, the more impulsive of the two quickly joined his brother and grabbed his arm. Within seconds they had bounded up the steps.

Alone, Papa took in the rest of the living area, then entered the kitchen. 'Who's been eating our food?" He muttered to himself as his gaze fell upon the crumbs of cheese scattered on the kitchen counter-top and floor. Crumbs which hadn't been there when they'd left. He looked around for a few more seconds, then satisfied the kitchen held no more surprises, nor the bathroom or laundry - as Walt had come through them on his way in - Papa began to make his way to the only room unchecked. As he approached the Master bedroom, he paused to listen to his son's call down from the second floor, first Walt, then Edmund, and absently scanned the living room again.

"Someone has been sleeping in my bed, but there's no-one here now".

"And mine. Nor here"

It was then that Papa noticed the boots against the front door, and his heart jumped. Not his, nor his son's. From their size, they could belong only to a woman or child. This was becoming curiouser and curiouser. What sort of villain broke into a persons house, only to eat their food, and sleep on their beds? Papa shook his head in confusion, but was no longer tense. Any semblance of danger had passed, and he just wanted to get to the bottom of things.

Papa pointed the boots out to his son's as they returned downstairs, then motioned for them to join him. The Master Bedroom was sparsely furnished, and at first glance appeared empty. Rupert smiled as his eyes landed on the four-poster bed, and the gap between mattress and floor. Unless the intruder had escaped bare-footed, with the rest of the cottage confirmed empty, it was the only possible hiding place left.

Papa bear dropped to his knees, and reached in to the space. His voice echoed off the walls as he wiggled his arm, and his fingertips brushed against something soft and warm. Skin. "Well, well, what do we have here". In a flash, his fingers snapped closed, around what felt to be a slim ankle, and he began to drag the intruder out. "Who is it that's been sleeping on my bed?" The two boys stood watching, breath held in anticipation.

RE: Goldilocks And The Three 'Bears' - Quix and Cyanide

Get out! Get out! Get out!

Her silent screams in her head, hands clasped over her mouth, eyes wide at the shadows that stalked the house looking for her, wincing any time a voice carried too well. She knew it was happening too, listening to them through the places she'd frolicked through their house, leaving nothing but crumbs and wrinkles behind. 'What a terrible house guest, I am,' She thought suddenly, mildly horrified. That second passed as the floor creaked below their weight, finally shutting her eyes tightly, refusing to watch his approach.

""Someone has been sleeping in my bed, but there's no-one here now".

"And mine. Nor here"

Her heart skipped in terror. The floor groaned as they came together in front of the room she was hiding in. Instantly Goldie's mouth was dry like dust. One set of footsteps came through the threshold.

Nonononononononono..!

Goldie's thoughts only got louder and quicker as he approached, her pulse throbbing in her ear drums just as deafening. She never even heard him kneel next to the bed. But his words made everything stop.

Fingers brushed her calf and suddenly she was trying to wriggle away silently, but was not nearly quick or stealthy enough to escape his grasp. She slid out fighting until her dress rode up her pale legs so fast, catching on the frame of his bed. exposing up to her hips. Her feeble blows halting to quickly cover herself, so when the rest of her finally came out, her face was a bright hue of pink.

"I'm so sorry!" She whimpered after a pause. Goldielocks was all of five foot three, and she made herself look smaller there on the floor by curling in to herself. Brilliantly golden hair a mess behind her, the leather band barely keeping it together. She had absolutely no idea of what she had caused now-- what sort of men were these? Were they going to hurt her? Bring her back to her father? Far in the back of her mind a small hopeful voiced asked: 'Help you?'

Turning her round face up, she forced herself to look into his eyes, willing no tears to show. She sniffled and her eyes darted toward the younger men in the back and swallowed. "Goldielo--" She started, biting her tongue quickly. "Pressila," she answered quickly. She prayed he didn't catch the slip-- she was much better known as Goldielocks than her real name.

RE: Goldilocks And The Three 'Bears' - Quix and Cyanide

Walt and Edmund stood with their arms folded across their chests against, a look of anticipation on their faces. Like their Father, both young men were now calm. Any intruder would have heard their stomps on the wooden floors above, and the conversations between them. If there were danger to be had, or someone intended to cause them harm, they would already have acted, and not run away, or hidden. 'Probably some mischievous child, Papa, and well gone by now. Maybe he'll attempt to return and claim his boots". Edmund chimed in as Papa knelt to reach in under the bed.

That was Papa's thought as well, that there would be no-one to find. At least until his fingers brushed skin. He glanced up at his son's with his eyebrows raised, and they stepped forward as they realised he'd discovered the interloper. "Let's see who's been sleeping under my bed". Papa tightened his grip, and felt the figure squirm and fight as he used his superior strength to drag her all the way out. And it was a she. A young woman with brilliant golden hair, and bright blue eyes. Papa definitely wasn't expecting that, and his jaw dropped as he released his grip, and stepped back to his feet. His expression of surprise and shock almost matched that of the girl's herself.

"Who is she, Papa?" The three men's eyes met as Walt spoke, then their gazes moved in unison to appraise the girl on the floor as she stammered an apology. Rupert's attention remained on her face, however the boys, after quickly taking in her features, moved lower. To the glimpse of creamy skin that had been revealed as her dress caught on the frame of the bed. Walt nudged Edmund's shoulder, and whispered something in his ear. It was too low for Papa to catch, but he could guess its substance.

Walt paused their conversation to shoot her a grin as she looked to them, then deliberately whispered to his brother again. Whatever was said made them both laugh. At the same time, Rupert leaned to place a hand on her shoulder. He paused to listen to her speak, and his eyes flared with amusement, and a touch of anger, at her obvious slip. "Pray tell me if Goldielopresilla be your first name, or your last? It's one I've not heard before." Behind her, the two boys giggled at the sarcasm evident in their Father's tone as, with ease, Papa lifted the girl to her feet, so that she stood directly in front of him. His 6"2 inch frame towered over her.

"Then, you can tell me what gives you the right to break into our peaceful home, steal our food, and sleep on our beds." He lowered his voice, and inched even closer. "This time do not lie, or I'll have my boys take you upstairs, and, shall we say." Papa's eyes, which had been locked on the intruders, flicked down to appraise her body, then moved back to her face. He smiled wickedly. "Interrogate you." The words were intended as a scare tactic, meant to obtain information, and nothing more. However, such tactics appeared to be beyond the comprehension of the two younger men.

As soon as the implied threat had been issued, from both son's came a sharp intake of breath, and two sets of eyes drank in her petite, young, female form, without guile or hesitation. "Can we, Papa?" Walt's voice shook with excitement.

"Please?" Edmund's tone was more plaintive.

Papa Bear furrowed his brows, then mentally shrugged. It wasn't as if pretty young women were in abundance around here. He'd keep playing along. 'That's up to the young lady. What do you have to say for yourself, Ms Goldiepressilla?"

All three Bear's were too immersed in their own thoughts to note that the wind outside had picked up, and the curtain now flapped against the open bedroom window that lay in a direct path between Goldielocks and freedom.

RE: Goldilocks And The Three 'Bears' - Quix and Cyanide

Goldie tried her best not to look flustered, but failed, horribly. The boys' eyes crawled over her skin and she felt slightly sick to her stomach. Were these the kind of men her mother had warned her about? She swallowed hard around the fear and forced her chin up, a moment before she was pulled onto her feet and felt his form emanating over her. She stammered as she tried to think of something to say, but her mind was giving her blanks.

A cool breeze fluttered some of the loose hair at her neck, snapping the curtains noisily behind her. Could she run? She wondered if it was worth it, running might end up worse for her. Another breath in and she moved to answer. "I'm.. I'm awfully sorry Mister," she began, in her best pouting voice. "I didn't sleep in them--" She began, trying to defend herself, before she bit down on her bottom lip, the plump flesh going a darker shade of red at the contact. "I just.. I.. I panicked.."

And it was happening again.

With surprising grace (even to herself) she leapt up and onto the master bed, then in two small bounds she was at the window, diving head-first through it. Somehow, part of her skirt got caught and tore, a long blue strip now dangling from the ledge as she rolled in the grass. With a panicked look, much like a doe realizing she was caught, she spared a glance back. Then she was on her feet again-- bare feet-- she realzied a second too late as her little pale toes connected with a heavy root and she went sprawling into the dirt. Goldie didn't wait there, though, she scurried onto her knees and then up to her feet. Her bee-line through the clearing behind them home gave her only a slight head-start into the forest behind.

Without shoes Goldie had to be careful, but being careful meant she was slow. It wasn't long until another long blue piece of fabric was missing from her skirt and the knees were filthy like her hands and cheeks. Golden hair was matted down on one side with mud that dripped down between hidden breasts.

Finally she had to stop to breathe, holding herself snug against a tree. She could hear them somewhere behind her and she shut her eyes, trying to ignore the echoes of "Can we, Papa?" and "Please?" that were going to give her nightmares.

RE: Goldilocks And The Three 'Bears' - Quix and Cyanide

Thwack. "Owwww. What was that for, Papa?"

Thwack. "And one for you, too".

The siblings stood with their hands rubbing the back of their heads, faces scrunched up, not in pain, but in confusion, as all three stared at the piece of the young woman's skirt which hung from the window sill, under the flapping curtain.

"Look at what you've gone and done". Papa glared at his two son's, as he stalked to the window and ripped the curtain aside, so all could watch as Golidlocks scampered across the fields towards the trees. "You've frightened her almost to death".

"But Papa it was your idea, you said we could take her".

Rupert Bear rolled his eyes, and let the curtain drop, so that he could approach Walt, and give him another smack upside the head. "It was a tactic, boys. I was trying to get her to talk. How many times have I told you about GrandPapa, and the man he was? Do you think he'd take young women against their will? No, he was a hero. If he could hear you right now, he'd be spinning in his grave." Papa's voice grew louder and his face turned red with anger. "What are you waiting for? Go find the poor little thing. She's obviously in trouble."

"Yes, Papa."

"Yes, Papa."

The boys needed no further encouragement. It wasn't their father's fury they were afraid of, but the knowledge that if they delayed another moment, it might be too late to find her. Then, they'd most likely be forced to endure the night listening to Papa regale them with tales of their Grandfather's heroics. Tales they'd heard a million times before. A split second later, Walt dived through the open window, curled up into a ball, somersaulted onto the grass, and sprung to his feet. Edmund was right behind him. Papa used the door.

By the time Rupert had stepped outside, his son's were racing into the forest and closing in on the young, bare-footed girl. Papa could hear branches snap, twigs creak, and small forest animals squeak and bark in fear, at the noise the three humans were making. He raised his hands to his mouth, and used them as a microphone as he slowly began to jog. In a different direction. "Don't hurt her".

The boys panted and puffed, as the forest became denser. Edmund stopped to pull the piece of skirt from the tree, and both of them went silent. His eyebrow cocked and he held a finger to his lips as the sound of Goldilocks footsteps grew fainter, then ceased all together. "She's stopped", whispered Walt, as he glanced at the point where he'd last caught a glimpse of her. "Let's split up". Their own hair matted with sweat from their exertions, and chests heaving, the two young men began to move in different directions, bent at the knees, and walking on tip-toes, doing their best to remain silent as they circled their prey.

In the meantime, Papa Bear had gauged her speed and direction, and cut a diagonal path through the trees. It was he who first saw her. Bare-footed, her dress torn, and half covered in mud. He moved in as far as he could without drawing attention, and looked up to see the boys approaching. His voice was low and soft as he stepped into view, and he held his hands up in a gesture of conciliation. "I'm sorry, don't be scared. I promise we won't hurt you. Tell us what trouble you're in, and maybe we can help."

RE: Goldilocks And The Three 'Bears' - Quix and Cyanide

She didn't see him at first, her cheek pressed against the bark as she listened for the two who were obviously following behind her, the two she could still hear breathing in the trees at her back. When her eyes did flicker of him-- for the second time actually, her first brief glance didn't show any recognition-- she yelped and braced herself on the tree. Goldie felt her knees wobble in her skirts, before she curled her fists into the ruined cotton.

Any words she had dried up on her tongue when the father started to creep up to her, his hands out wide and friendly like she was a started doe. It worked too, she felt her shoulders slack a few inches. He said the one thing no-one had ever said to her: maybe we can help.

Tears were welling in her eyes by the time she could force out words."My step-father wants... he wants me to be his wife-- I-I," She took a raspy breath in, suppressing the tears that wanted to overflow. "Today I'm an adult," She finally whispered, her pale eyes cast down by his feet. That was it. Her worst fears had been spoken aloud. She was an adult who was fit for marriage, and as her only legal guardian he got to pick her husband. "No-one believes me but he.. he killed my mother for our farm. I saw what he did to her. He'll--" Panic rose and she gulped for air again, "Do the same to me. Or worse. I know it!"

After getting a hold of herself she straightened against the tree a little, sniffling softly at Papa Bear. "I'm Pressilla-- Everyone knows me as Goldielocks though." She added softly, her gaze finally lifting to meet his.

RE: Goldilocks And The Three 'Bears' - Quix and Cyanide

he boys crept closer, and approached the spot where Goldielocks stood, from either side. Their gazes wandered from her long golden hair to take in the pale skin exposed by the torn skirt. Then they noticed their Father, and the warning look he shot them was enough for their eyes to move back to her face.

Papa walked slowly, with his hands held out, to appear the least intimidating that he could. As he stopped a couple of feet away, and motioned for the boys to come closer, he noticed the tears welling in her eyes. Any annoyance he'd retained from her break-in of their property turned to sympathy. He'd been right, the girl was in trouble. The boys gasped in shock, and stood with their mouths hanging open as she told of her situation, however none of the three interrupted. When she was done, Papa's eyes burned with fury, and one hand had clenched into a fist by his side.

"We need to help her, Father. Edmund nodded in agreement with Walt.

"Goldielocks...that's a nice name". Rupert ignored his son's outburst as he his voice softened even more, and he reached out to pat the girls shoulder in an attempt to provide comfort. "I'm Rupert, and the boys are Walter and Edmund". He inclined his head at each in turn, and they both lifted a hand to wave, and shot her their most dazzling smiles.

Rupert attention returned to Goldielock's, and he took a moment to appraise her. He had no doubts she told the truth, and his voice shook with anger, and his head with shocked disbelief at her predicament. "I believe you. What sort of animal he must be. Your very own step-father. And on your birthday too"

"Can she stay with us?"

Papa's lips pursed, and his hand dropped from her shoulder as he pondered Edmund's question. "We can't very well just kidnap her, can we. Her Step-Father would come looking, and imagine what trouble we'd be in then?" His gaze flicked to and fro, and his forehead furrowed as he lost himself in thought. Then, his lips curled into a smile, his head shot up, and his eyes twinkled. "Do you want to stay with us, Goldilocks? I think we can persuade your Step-Father to give you permission". One meaty fist slammed into the palm of his other hand, the slap of flesh against flesh making it obvious how Papa intended to obtain it. Or at least threaten. "It would be nice to have a woman around the house again, and there's more than enough duties for you to earn you keep. You wouldn't be a burden."

From his peripheral vision, Rupert noticed the boys smile. He knew what they were thinking, and that was okay. His own intentions weren't entirely honourable. There was a shortage of young women around, and Goldilocks presence could be what kept his son's at home, rather than journeying off in search of a wife. He'd ensure neither caused her harm, but as both could be quite charming, they might be able to persuade her into allowing them to have their way. Possibly, it was time for her as well.

'What do you say? Should we speak to your Step-Father, will you take us to him?"

"Hold on, Papa. She can't go like that?" Walt was already moving towards the trees, and glanced back over his shoulder. "I'll fetch her boots, and a shawl. It can become cold when the sun goes down".

He shot his sibling a smirk, and the two boys glared at each other. Then Edmund shrugged, and turned to Goldilocks as Walt sprinted into the forest. The eldest boy dropped down to one knee, and linked his hands together behind his back. "It's getting late, we should be moving. Why don't you let me carry you, at least until my brother returns. If the idiot doesn't get lost."

Papa rolled his eyes. The girl still hadn't even said yes.

RE: Goldilocks And The Three 'Bears' - Quix and Cyanide

The unrelenting fury in Papa's eyes nearly made her curl back in on herself, had she said something wrong? Insinuated the wrong thing? Were they the same as her step-father-- Her mental tirade was cut short when the younger of the boys spoke out, and a spark of hope fluttered in her chest. They were willing to help.

Slowly, with shy grace, she waved at them in turn. "My mother always called me that," she admitted softly. Goldie watched the boys carefully, the predatory feeling she'd gotten from them earlier was gone, and they too were approaching as if she was ready to turn and run again. Though Goldie wasn't certain she'd have the strength, her toes were bruised and cold, her arms felt heavy and she was filthy.

When she was about to make a suggestion Papa spoke up about kidnapping and her lips slapped shut, he was right. It would only make it worse, and then he could marry her and lock her away in an asylum for the insane-- because she'd have to be to stay with her "kidnappers". She began to chew on her bottom lip, before Rupert began laying his plan out before her.

Goldie missed any looks between the brothers now, so lost in her excitement that they were going to get her out of there. For a moment, she forgot what had happened, that she broke into their home and stole their food and ruined their beds, and threw herself at Rupert. Thin pale arms locking around his middle and her face burying in his chest. "Yes! Yes please!" she cried, unable to hide the pure joy in her voice. "I promise I'll earn my keep. I promise. I can wash, and cook, and clean, and garden..." Her voice trailed off as she hugged Rupert tightly again, then took a step back, a flush rising on her cheeks at the outburst.

"I can take you to him, he.. he wouldn't believe you if I'm not there-- that I was okay, I mean. He's.. like that."

She meant to tell Walter not to worry, that she had more boots, but he was already off running. The shawl though, that would be nice, she realized as gooseprickles rose on her exposed flesh. The sun was going to be going down before they got to the farm, even.

"Edmund, right?" She asked softly, her lips pulled into a warm smile. Goldie was awkward about getting onto a strangers back, but her feet were already protesting from her merely standing. Her fingers were light on his shoulders as she gracefully got onto his back.

"The farm is just outside of Riverview, two hours east on foot," Goldie started, "We've got everything from chickens to stallions. And a few acres of land. When I... ran this morning, I went directly west. So we need to go east." Riverview was a small settlement, it had a singular blacksmith and tanner, only a few market stalls, but nice people. Many worked as loggers or on the nearby farms-- Goldie's farm employed a dozen residents itself.

Her pale eyes fell, then she looked up at Papa through her thick lashes, "Thank you.. really. You're saving my life," she all but whispered.

RE: Goldilocks And The Three 'Bears' - Quix and Cyanide

Papa smiled at the small wave, and grace with which Goldielocks returns his son's greeting. She appeared a nice young woman, and that only reinforced the anger he felt. She must have been extremely frightened to have been forced to run away and break into a strangers house. Her Step-father needed a stern talking to.

When her arms wrapped around him, Papa returned the hug. A flash of guilt passed through him as the feel of her soft, young body against his caused him to tighten his grip. It had been too long since Papa had held a woman - longer even than his boys. He was aware that they occasionally frolicked with one of the village girls who, to put it mildly, was not exactly of marriage material, but had held his tongue. Young men had their urges. "Just what we need, and it will be a pleasure to have you around the house". Rupert patted her on the back, and pushed impure thoughts from his mind as her arms encircled him for a second time.

"That's right. Edmund, I'm the eldest". His son's toothy grin lit up his face as moved to his knees after finishing his exchange with Walt, and took in her features. "I love your hair, it's beautiful, I've never seen anything quite like it". He spoke as she clambered onto his back, and she felt as light as a feather. Edmund stepped to his feet, and enjoyed the sensation of her smooth skin as his fingers wrapped around her calves. His palms also brushed against the smears of dirt by her arduous run though the trees. "When we get home, I'll draw you a bath or, if it's not too late, we can stop on the way, and bathe in the river?"

Papa drew in a deep breath, and glared at his boy. "This is serious business son, we're not here for games". Though his voice was harsh, he had to struggle to keep a smile off his face. He was well aware that Edmund was looking for an excuse to remove his shirt, and impress her with his physique. "There'll be plenty of time for that, later".

The Patriach's eyes moved to Goldielocks, and he nodded. "Riverview. I haven't been there in a long while, but I know the way. I'm glad we can help, you'll be safe with us. Don't worry, I don't plan to hurt your Step-Father, just give him a fright. Rupert's voice had dropped to match the softness of hers, and he squeezed her shoulder for reassurance.

"Not unless you want us to". Edmund hitched her higher onto his back. Then, he began to move in the direction she had indicated. The walk turned into a jog, which became close to a sprint, and soon he was almost out of sight.

With Goldielocks bouncing up and down on his back, her golden hair flying, and dirt splattered skirt lifting with the movement to reveal more of her body than she probably realised, Papa laughed as he watched. He allowed them to go a little further before he lifted his hands to his mouth, and called out in his booming voice, in a tone which brooked no disagreement. "Edmund. Stop. NOW"

The elder boys feet hit a patch of dead leaves as he came to a halt, and he stumbled almost to his knees, with Goldielocks on his shoulder. "What, Papa?" He recovered his balance, and called out to his approaching Father.

"Slow down, or Walt will never catch up to us, he doesn't know which path we're taking, answered Papa as he held his son's eyes for a moment. Both of them knew that's exactly what he intended. "Plus, poor Goldielocks here has already had enough scares for one day". His eyes crinkled with amusement as he winked at her.

"I'm sorry if I scared you, I didn't mean to" Edmund's worriedly glanced over his shoulder, hoping that he hadn't done anything wrong. "I'll go slower."

Papa walked beside them as they made their way through the forest, ensuring he left a trail that his younger son would be able to follow. He asked Goldielocks about her family, but didn't pry too much. He was sure he'd find out everything in time. After thirty minutes or so, they heard a rustling noise in the bushes, and the sound of footsteps.

The men halted their conversation, and turned to see Walt appear, a cloth sack and Goldielocks boots slung over one shoulder. The boy glanced at his Father and sibling, then his attention turned to the girl. "I've brought your boots, and some biscuits and water. I thought you might be hungry or thirsty". The sack landed on the ground, and Walt bent excitedly to open it, his eyes darting up to the young woman on his brother's back.

RE: Goldilocks And The Three 'Bears' - Quix and Cyanide

Goldie loosely wrapped her arms around his shoulders, doing everything not to choke him or fall off. An unfamiliar thrill ran through her body as his rougher hands held her calves, lightly, so not to hurt her, but tight enough so she wouldn't topple. She shivered slightly at the contact. It was the first time she'd ever been touched by a boy like that, even if it was just below the knee. "Thank you," she felt herself blushing, the pink crawling up her throat. One that only deepened at the idea of bathing in front of the three men-- she didn't know them too well but she sensed she didn't have to worry about anything like that happening.

Her mind was formulating a response when Papa spoke up, and she silently thanked him... until he mentioned later and she blinked back at him with wide pale eyes. Did they do that? Bathe communally? Her heart thumped, would she have to too?

Thankfully, the conversation turned away from getting naked and toward the situation at hand. Goldie giggled softly at Edmund, she didn't want them to hurt her step-father, but his words were somehow reassuring anyway. She yelped-- an indignant noise-- as he adjusted her, and then again when he started jogging.

Suddenly she was laughing. Edmund was strong, she could feel the muscles of his back working through their respective clothes and his speed was incredible. Her long locks danced behind them like a stream of gold and her pale fingers clung to him tighter. Too soon he was being told to stop and they nearly tumbled. The strong young man caught himself quickly, only managing to crush her breasts to the back of his neck as she too, was off balance. She brushed a mass of hair off over her eyes and smiled up at the patriarch. "I'm fine, really." In the best comforting way she knew how she gave Edmund's shoulder a soft squeeze. "Was actually really exciting." She admitted with another faint blush. "And please, call me Goldie."

The information she gave was rather standard. Her mother's name, how her family had owned the farm for generations, how her father died in a war shortly after she was born, how it was growing up with just her mother, when her step-father had joined the family.. but she didn't go any farther than that. Her mother's death was still a sore subject for her, even though she'd been dead for nearly 5 years. Frankly, Goldie didn't want to remember her that way, sick and frail and struggling for every breath. Her best memories of her she was always laughing and smiling.

She was brought out of her memories when Walt joined them, Edmund had slowed enough that with a wiggle, she could free her legs and hop down. Her toes were still cold and her feet were going to ache for days, but she couldn't let his good deed go unrewarded. "Thank you kindly," she said as she approached, kneeling in front of him to take her returned boots. She tried to brush the dirt off the bottoms of her feet but only managed to make her hands filthy too. So, after a sigh, she pulled them on and got to her feet. "Though I did sort of already raid your pantry..." she admitted softly, unable to meet any of their eyes. "I'm sorry about that, again. But.. maybe later?" Goldie's smile to Walt was bright and warm. Then a moment later shed reverted back to being slightly awkward, hoping they all missed the reappearance of the goosebumps on her skin.

"But if you brought that shawl.." She began slowly, working up the nerve. Her fingers knitted together as she let the unasked question hang.

RE: Goldilocks And The Three 'Bears' - Quix and Cyanide

Edmund let out a sigh of relief as Goldie touched his shoulder, and gave it a squeeze. "It was fun, wasn't it....Goldie. We'll do it again, and lots more. You're going to love living with us." His eyes brightened, and he shot her a grin.

Papa hadn't seen his son so happy in ages, and it was obvious he had a crush on the young woman. That caused his own smile to widen, and he momentarily forgot about the reasons for her presence, and what they were on their way to do. As Walt returned, the elder son reluctantly bent down so that she could slip from his back. His hand briefly slid higher up her calves, and he bit his lip as he felt the soft press of her breasts against his back. He couldn't resisting taking a peek as she dropped to the forest floor, before he hurriedly jerked his head up, hopefully before she had noticed, and glared at his sibling.

Walt bent at the backpack and pulled out a flask of water, and biscuits. He threw one each to Papa and Walt, then held another out gingerly towards Goldilocks.

"That's true, but you've had a hard day, and from what I saw in the cottage, you left more crumbs on the floor, than appeared to make it into your mouth. Let's hope you become better at cleaning up after yourself". Papa winked, to let her know he was teasing.

Walt pulled back the biscuit with a slight look of disappointment at her refusal, and popped it between his own teeth. The smile she'd given, however, had made Walt all gooey inside, and he almost swallowed the biscuit down whole in his rush to grab out the shawl when she shyly requested it. His eyes darted to Papa - the shawl was made of gray wool, and had belonged to Geneveive - who inclined his head in a nod of approval. Then Walt returned her smile, and pushed himself to his feet. "This should keep you warm. Let me help".

The younger boy moved behind Goldie to drape the garment across her shoulders. His eyes drifted of their own accord to take in the soft swell of her breasts visible from his vantage point. Something his elder sibling must have noted. 'Come on, let's go. We don't have all day". Edmund's harsh tone sounded just like his Father's, and he'd begun to pace back and forth impatiently.

"He's right, we really should get moving. The sooner we arrive, the sooner we leave. Then we can enjoy the journey home, without a care" Papa lightly touched Goldie's arm."Are you ready?"

"Carry this, it's your turn". Walt hurriedly threw all of the contents back into the sack and, before his brother could offer Goldie another ride, tossed it to Edmund, and positioned himself beside their new friend. If looks could kill, the younger boy would have dropped to the ground on the spot, however no further words were exchanged between them.

Soon they were marching through the forest, and Edmund had joined Walt at Goldie's side. One sibling told a tale, intended to impress, and as soon it was finished, the second regaled her with another, even more preposterous than the last. Papa walked behind and allowed himself to enjoy the happiness of the boys, as well as the figure of the girl who caused it. She certainly was a pretty sight and any guilt he'd felt at his previous impure thoughts soon subsided. Why should his son's be the only ones to enjoy her company? It was when Rupert noticed some lights a short distance away - Riverview - that he increased his pace to close in on them. "Halt, we're almost there". The boys obeyed immediately, and each placed a hand on Goldie's elbow, to bring her to a stop.

The mirth and good humour left the Patriach's expression as he approached the trio, and focused his attention on the young woman. This was now serious business. "What do you say Goldie, do you want to lead, and be with us when we confront your Step-Father? Or would you rather stay here, where you're sure to be safe? We'd just need directions."

"I'll stay with her, Papa."
Walt.

"No, I will."
Edmund.

Papa's eyes didn't waver, but they did roll, as he awaited her answer.

RE: Goldilocks And The Three 'Bears' - Quix and Cyanide

Goldie was flushing more often than not, the gentle teasing not bothering her in the least, but it did mildly embarrass the girl. "Promise," she squeaked at Papa, offering a weak smile.

Walt was quick to change the pace though, coming up behind her to drape the warm grey shawl over her thin shoulders. She tilted her head to the side and up slightly to try and regard him as he moved gently around her. He was visibly the younger sibling-- still carrying around some baby weight in his cheeks and neck, but not too much younger than a now-pacing Edmund. She mouthed a warm 'thank you' before the moment was over.

Nodding her head enthusiastically as Papa approached. His fingers were hot on her warm, a blazing heat that made goosebumps rise on her neck. Somewhere, in the dark recesses of her mind she realized this might not have been the greatest idea, agreeing to live with three men whom seemed to be starved for attention. But then Walt tossed the bag to his brother and she laughed at the display. They had some sort of rivalry going, she noted, but didn't think much of it.These men were unlike most she'd met; kind, gentle and willing to help a girl in need.

The golden-haired woman spent the whole walk gasping and laughing at their stories, her cheeks burning from the great grin that was spread across her face. Her cheeks were pink as another laugh whooshed out of her with force, strained happy tears burning the edges of her eyes. She was about to ask a question pertaining the last story when Papa spoke behind them and she suddenly had a hand on each elbow to stop her.. though she did stumble forward slightly, looking back with bright eyes.

The questions were asked and her lower lip was dragged in between her teeth, fingers weaving together in an obviously nervous gesture. "He won't believe you without me but.." she looked between the two boys. "He might get.. mad if you all show up and confront him." Goldie tried hard not to flinch. He had gotten mad before, and when he got mad, he got mean. "Might be best if they stay back and you and I continue alone," she admitted, her voice betraying how much she disliked that option. "Not up here, back," she backpedalded quickly, "But on the farm, just not when we talk to him. He'll feel.." She waved her hands loosely in the air as she fought for the words. "Attacked? Threatened?"

Quickly she covered her failing will with a powerful smile. "Once he's been talked to though we ought to be fine. He might even leave us alone long enough to pack some clothes," she forced a little laugh, hoping they'd miss the honesty in her voice.

"Riverview is just over that way. If we keep going straight the way we're going we can skip the town and head right for the farm. Maybe only another twenty minutes? Can't be far now." She started forward again, waving with her right hand toward an unseen town.

"Oh. His name is Jacob Slint, by the way." Goldielocks kept her eyes trained forward at that, voice calm while her guts twisted in anxiety.

RE: Goldilocks And The Three 'Bears' - Quix and Cyanide

The atmosphere changed as Papa awaited Goldie's answer. Although his son's could be mischievous and playful, and at times, disobey their Father, they also knew when was the time to be respectful, and listen to their elders. This was one of those times. No longer were there jokes, or the teasing and competitiveness with each other, or excuses to 'stumble' on an non-existent rock and fall against Goldie, and briefly place a hand on her waist to steady themselves. Don't think Papa hadn't noticed that.

Not that he could blame them. The memory of her slim young body , and the feel of her soft, warm skin, was still fresh in his own mind. He could only imagine what Goldie must be thinking at the idea of coming to live with the three men she had barely just met - and how desperate she must have been to agree. Whilst he loved his boys, and shared their urges, whatever happened with Goldie was to be done with care. Not every man was the same as her Step-Father.

Walt and Edmund maintained their grips on her elbow, and stared at Papa Bear. They could tell by his tone, and stillness of body, that he was taking in and calculating every word she spoke, and coming to a decision. When she finished, and stepped forward, they lost their touch on her arm, and looked to Rupert for direction. However, before he could provide it, the silence was broken.

'We're not scared, if he tries anything, I'll take care of him". Walt punched the meaty palm of one hand with the fist of his other, the sound of it echoing around them, and making small forest animals scatter. Edmund's mouth, which had opened to most likely attempt to out-do his sibling with words of bravado, immediately clamped shut at the glare Papa trained on them. That Goldie was anxious and had enough on her plate already was evident from the way in which she spoken, and in her demeanour, though Papa didn't let on to the young woman that it had been noted.

'That sounds like a good plan". Rupert moved beside her, and followed Goldie's gaze in the direction her Step-Father's home must lay. "Jacob Slint. A mean name for a mean man". He comfortingly draped an over the young woman's shoulders, and caught her eye. "Don't worry about Walter and Edmund. This is an adventure for them, and boys will be boys, but when the time comes, they'll do the right thing". Papa couldn't help but be distracted momentarily by the thought of exactly how much Goldie did know about boys being boys, but quickly put it aside. He could worry about that later, for now they had a task to perform.

"Follow, and don't make any noise". Papa looked up and waited for his sons to incline their heads in acknowledgement, before his attention returned to Goldie.

The Patriarch ran his large, calloused, hand lightly up and down her arm, The touch, and softness of his voice - completely at odds with his size - was intended to help allay her fears. "It'll be okay, Goldie, I promise. I only plan to talk some sense into your Step-Father, and not threaten or be rude. However, if it comes to it, I can take care of myself, and we'll ensure my sons hide close enough to watch, and help if required. You have all of us to protect you. Once we gather your possessions, Walt and Edmund can carry them back, so grab as much as you like.

"You don't mind, do you boys?"
The last question was rhetorical and asked by Papa without even a glance over his shoulder.

Instead he winked at Goldie and lowered his voice to a whisper. "About time they were put to some useful work."

The sun was setting, and the fading light silhouetted the figure of the man, whose bulk almost obscured the view of the young woman at his side, as he began to walk in the direction she'd indicated. Behind them traipsed two men almost as large as the first. If anyone saw them, they must have been quite a sight, as they headed towards the confrontation.

RE: Goldilocks And The Three 'Bears' - Quix and Cyanide

Papa Bear had a sort of aura that calmed her and she relaxed beside him, the nervous way her fingers played with each other ceased and some tension in her shoulders melted away. "Right. It won't come to that-- he'll take one look at your and run away," she giggled softly, holding a hand up only about a foot higher than her own head, but still no where near Ruperts towering height. "He is only about this tall." She admits, that giggle sliding into a small smile.

Another laugh passed her rosy lips. "I didn't want to assume-- but I don't have much. I wouldn't want to take over a part of your home, which was lovely, by the way. Did you build it yourself?" They made their way out of the trees and continued to walk toward Slint. Inside her body her belly was twisting with each step, then Rupert's presence would calm her again, until she was forcing the nervous feeling down with a silent reminder that he was still at her side, the boys following them in near silence.

Jacob paced in the den of the main house, his scrawny face screwed up into a scowl. Three farm-hands stood to the side of the room, watching him repeat the same track he had been following for the last four hours. They were all dirty in comparison to Slint, who had never lifted a rake or a pitchfork in his whole life, the most he did on the farm was slaughter the pigs when the time came. With gusto, one might say.

Slint spun on his heel to come back around when the door on the far end of the room was thrown open with a resounding thud. Everyone in the room paused, the fire in the huge hearth flickered across their faces as the runner came into the room, he kept his eyes down on the carpets instead of looking up at the farm's owner. "S-sir. There's someone coming this way. Looks to be three or four of them."

"And?" He bit off, nearly spitting on the poor boy, who couldn't have been more than eleven.

He stumbled back and the farmhand on the side closest to him looked like he was going to help the boy, but Slint shot him a glare that could have melted iron. The boy stumbled over his words but forced them out quickly enough: "I-I think I s-saw Gol-Goldielocks. Her hair, I mean. I s-saw it from ac-across the field." Slint was on him in a moment though, bony fingers weaving into the boys tunic and lifting him to his toes.

"You saw her and you didn't bring her back?!" He screamed in the boy's face, which was pale and sweating now.

"Th-they were coming this way!" He squeaked.

Jacob dropped him and stalked to the door. "Out! All of you! I need to teach that stupid girl some god damn respect." His words were nearly a growl as the workers all shuffled out.

Goldie slowed some, squinting towards the main house as she saw light spill across the walk way. "Doors open," She said softly to Rupert, fingers finding his wrist-- more for her own comfort than his. She squinted again and a small smile touched her lips. "Those are some of the farm boys, Sam, Greg, John and little Tommy." There was a small slope in front of them, that led down toward the main house, which was nestled between a few smaller buildings. The barns and silos were further into the field behind them. She pointed towards the biggest building, the one the boys were fleeing from. "That's where he'll be. He lives in the main house-- so did I, but I often moved to the other houses so he wouldn't find me..." she left 'in the night' unsaid.

They grew every closer as the boys grew further. Goldie could feel her heart against her ribs as they passed the first window. Candle light flickered against the pane and she could just see Jacob's form in the furthest corner, sitting in his usual chair. She swallowed down hard and led them to the door. Goldie paused for one last deep breath before she pushed the door open.

"Now where the hell have you been, you ungrateful little bitch. I believe I had asked something of you this morning, and when I came to collect, you were gone. How exactly do you plan on explaining yourself... and who are your friends?"

RE: Goldilocks And The Three 'Bears' - (Quix and CyanideDisaster)

Goldie's giggle, which appeared so natural and unforced, caused Rupert to chuckle in return. He could understand why his son's had quickly become so smitten with her, and he was sure she'd be a joy to have around the house. Not only because she was a woman, and an attractive one at that, but for the brightness of personality he sensed lay within her, and what it would add to the three men's lives.

Rupert inclined his head to indicate that he understood, then went on to answer her question. There was no point in continuing to speak about Jacob Slint, and worsen the young woman's nerves any further. They'd be meeting him soon enough. "Don't you concern yourself about that, there's plenty of room for the four of us." As to how much space Goldie would be allowed to take up, and exactly where she'd sleep, Papa hadn't put much thought into that, however, he was sure his boys had, and would happily provide their own suggestions.

"Would you believe I built the entire cottage myself, when I was but six years old? Sawed off every tree branch, carried it to the clearing, and nailed in every piece of wood". Rupert paused, then winked at the young woman. "Okay, my own Papa may have helped, but I did choose the yellow and red." He continued to chat merrily with Goldie, with the boys speaking in whispers behind them, until such time as his eyes lifted to note the figure which scurried towards the house.

They'd been spotted. However, there were no cries to stop, and no-one rushed to confront them, Possibly Mr Slint assumed the men had come to return Goldilocks to her rightful place, and was inside attempting to figure out how to avoid the payment of a reward. They were allowed untouched to find the place where her Step-Father resided.

Papa squeezed Goldie's hand for reassurance as they passed the window, and he obtained his first glimpse of the man whose voice he'd heard barking instructions to the farm hands, and approached the open door. Behind them, Walt and Edmund had stopped, a hundred or so feet away. Go on Goldie, it will be okay." Papa whispered as she pushed open the door.

"Now where the hell have you been, you ungrateful little bitch. I believe I had asked something of you this morning, and when I came to collect, you were gone. How exactly do you plan on explaining yourself... and who are your friends?"

Papa took those words as invitation to enter behind her. "That's no way to talk to your fiance. Or should I say ex-fiancé?" Papa's voice dripped with sarcasm and distaste as his eyes bore into the man who'd stood to greet them, and whose jaw dropped as he took in the bulk of the stranger. Jacob appeared to grow smaller and smaller, and Papa larger and larger, as the Patricach stomped across the floor, and the two men came face-to-face. Or face to chest. Papa glanced down, and raised an eyebrow at the figure he now towered over. "Goldie has decided she's not quite ready to be betrothed, and instead will be taking up employment as my maid. You can call me Rupert."

Jacob Slint's eyes had widened in shock, and his body had begun to tremble. The man was still shaking - either in fear or anger - as Papa grabbed him by the scruff of the vest he wore, and lifted him up, so that his feet dangled in the air, and their eyes were at the same level. "If I ever hear you address her in that manner again, I will knock your head clean off your shoulders, do you understand?" The assuredness with which he spoke somehow made the words even scarier. So much for no threats, or intimidation, but Papa had taken an instant dislike to the weasel. He hoped Goldie would understand.

Goldie's Step-Father began to nod, and his mouth flapped opened and closed without a word being emitted for a few moments. Then, he regained some composure, and comprehended the meaning of what Papa had just said. "No, no, you can't do this. She's mine. Mine. MINE, I tell you. Goldie. He can't do this. You're going to be my wife. Tell him you're mine. He can't take you away." The man's legs kicked out and hit Papa's thighs, and his fists struck Rupert's shoulders in a flurry of punches. Jacob struggled and squirmed to escape, like a fish on a hook, but it had absolutely no effect on the much larger man.

Rupert held Jacob Slint up in the air with one hand, as if he weighed no more than one of the straw scarecrows placed out in the fields, and tilted his head to speak to Goldie. His tone was soft, and the words were accompanied with a reassuring nod. "Collect your things if you like, then I'll have the boys come help. Your Step-Father and I will continue our discussion outside". He didn't think the young woman need hear what he was about to say in regards to having questions asked about just how Mr Slint's first wife had died. A threat which would hopefully cause him to cease any further resistance, and think twice about making any attempt to steal Goldie back.

Rupert's attention return to the man he held, and he shot him a friendly smile. That was right before he swivelled on his toes, lifted Jacob higher, and threw him out the open door. The sound of his back hitting the ground made Papa wince. "Ouch. Sorry.", he mouthed to Goldie, before he stepped out, grabbed Slint's arm, and hauled him to his feet. A quick glance to where his boys stood, and they immediately began to move towards the house.

As Walter and Edmund passed, and entered the residence, Papa noted that the farm-boys had formed a circle around he and Jacob. Although they outnumbered the Bear's, he wasn't concerned that they'd intervene - each sported a huge grin on their face, and appeared to be enjoying the entertainment. Not so much Slint, whose face first went red, then slowly turned a pasty shade of white as Papa gripped his elbow, leaned forward, and spoke directly in his ear.

Goldie's face had gone a bright shade of pink at Jacob's instant verbal attack, shame washing down the strength she had built up on the way there. Was she really ungrateful? Had she not done almost everything he had ever asked? Had she not done her duty as his daughter-- step or not? She was about to sniffle out an apology when Rupert pushed inside. He made the room look smaller, his bulk a massive difference from her weasel like step-father. During the time that Rupert cornered him, she fled to the opposite side of the room nearest the window, her hands clenched at her chest as she watched, half in horror, half in admiration. Then the threats came and she felt fear bubble in her, would he really kill him?! She thought about the kind-hearted man that offered to save her after only knowing her for a few moments-- the same moments she broke into his home and invaded his privacy. Although she knew his heart was good, she didn't know if he truly was violent.

The fear had built up and was coming up as a protest before Jacob exploded again. Shouting and swinging his feet and fists, struggling like a child caught by the hand of their father. It was futile and childish and she stumbled back further. Any protests about not hurting him died there. "I'm not a possession," she finally squeaked at him, her blue eyes watery. "I'll never be yours. Never. Ever."

She nodded quickly when Rupert spoke back to her, and she tried to get her hands to stop shaking as she picked up one of the many candles in the room and scurried off toward the back. She could feel Jacob's eyes following her, the anger she felt there made tears threaten her eyes. There was a crash and she turned to see Rupert toss Jacob like he was nothing but a sack of potatoes, and she winced as his back hit the ground. Unexpectedly, she let loose a small laugh at Rupert's antics. Before turning back to the task at hand.

Her room in the main house was near the back, the boys would have had no trouble finding her. She wasn't being subtle, or even quiet. She was pulling a trunk out from under a pile of work-clothes when they did come into the room. It was small, made for a child, not a fully grown woman. Other than the pile of dirty work clothes she had had stacked in the corner, the room was spotless. There were few personal belongings there, a dirty old teddy bear and a small jewellery box the only two important items she couldn't leave without. She placed them most gently at the bottom of her trunk, before she began to fill it with folded clothing, her cheeks going pink when she tried to snatch up her undergarments without the boys seeing it-- her step-father had decided if she was going to become his wife, she better have some lacy things to wear for him-- so she stuffed the wad of lace into a corner.

Packing as quickly as she can she barely spared the time to glance at the two boys, it wasn't until she closed the trunk with a series of clicks that she finally looked back at them. Only to see her reflection in the vanity mirror behind them. Goldie was filthy, her golden hair tangled, dirt smearing her cheeks and collar. Not to mention her hands. She looked up at Edmund and offered him a weak little smile: "I might have to take you up on that offer for a bath, if, you know, you're still offering." She looked back down at her toes after back, fighting the flush on her cheeks.

RE: Goldilocks And The Three 'Bears' - Quix and Cyanide

The weasel shook like a leaf in Papa Bear's grasp, and his head bobbed up and down in agreement as Rupert whispered in his ear, and explained the way things were to be. It was easy to order a young woman around, but not such a simple task when faced with a man your own age, and twice your size. Jacob Slint was receiving an idea of how poor Goldilock's must have been made to feel, and it was obvious the man didn't enjoy it.

However, unlike Goldie, who'd mustered up the courage to defend herself, and denied being his possession - which had only furthered the Patriarch's admiration for the young woman - Jacob offered no resistance. Though Papa's words were rough, and so was the grip by which he held Slint, he was a gentle soul underneath, and had no intentions of maiming the man - if he even deserved to be thought of as such. He wasn't one to cause hurt for hurt's sake, though that wasn't to say that putting the frighteners through Mr Slint didn't bring him some satisfaction. The wink and sly grin he shot the boys as they entered the house attested to that.

Walter and Edmund reached the door at the same time, and each emitted an 'oomph', as they became stuck half-in, half-out, of the entrance in their combined rush to be first. It took a few seconds for them to untangle their limbs from the others, with Edmund, the eldest, and strongest, gaining the advantage. He arrived at the room where Goldie was just in time to see the undergarments she held being slipped into the trunk. His eyes followed the movement of the lacy material, and he opened to his mouth to comment, but that turned into another 'oomph, as he felt an elbow dig into his ribs. He tilted his head, and the look on Walt's face, and way he appraised Goldie made it obvious that his sibling had noticed the same as he. The elder boy rolled his eyes, and shook his head, as if to scold his younger brother for an obvious lack of maturity, and moved further into the room. Just as she clicked shut the trunk, and stood to face them.

"What bath?" Walt's tone was one of confusion, as Edmund moved closer to the young woman.

The shyness with which she had spoken, and the way her cheeks blushed, made the elder boy smile. He completely ignored his sibling's query as he reached out and brushed her elbow with the pads of his fingertips. "Sure, the offer still stands. We'll stop and bathe in the river. That way you won't have to wait until we get all the way home." The images that brought to mind caused Walt to flick his gaze to her chest - the one which contained her clothes, of course, although he was also tempted to glance at the other - , and swallow down the lump which had suddenly formed in his throat, and momentarily forced him to stop talking. He couldn't help but imagine what was under the filthy dress she wore. And what, exactly, she'd be bathing in.

'What bath?" Walt asked again, but this time his tone contained more annoyance than confusion.

Before he could ask a third time, there came stomps on the floor, and Rupert popped his head through the entrance. He took in the scene, then focused his attention on Goldie. "Your step-father was very reasonable, and we've come to an agreement. You're free to stay with us as long as you want."

"See Goldie, we told you everything would work out. My papa never lies." Edmund's voice was filled with admiration, and he shot her a wide grin. At the same time the fingers which touched her elbow slid down the soft, warm skin of her arm to take hold of her hand. "Let's go".

Walt meanwhile stood there open-mouthed and stared at the two of them. He didn't move an inch as Edmund, with Goldilocks being gently dragged along with him, passed and clapped his younger brother on the shoulder. "Do something useful, and carry her trunk, will you".

Edmund's eyes then raised to Papa's. "Goldie asked if we could stop on the way, so that she could bathe in the river. I told her we could, now that everything is okay. We can't make her walk all the way home as she is." That wasn't precisely what she'd said, but Edmund thought phrasing it as such would make it more difficult for Goldie to resist his plan. And, his plan it was. He had no intention of asking his Father or brother to join in the fun. In fact, he hoped they could be convinced to continue the journey home whilst he spent the night by the river, 'bathing' with their new house-guest.

It wasn't until they'd almost made it to where Papa stood that he realised, in his enthusiasm, he hadn't even given a Goldie a chance to respond, or to see if she was ready to leave. He stopped so abruptly, that he stumbled, and his expression was one of nerves, and apology as his eyes came to rest on hers. "I mean, that's if you have everything you need, and you're ready?"

Papa chuckled at one son's actions as he watched another collect Goldie's trunk, and place it over one shoulder. Walt's pupils narrowed at his brother, and the look said that whatever Edmund had in mind, he wasn't to be allowed to get away with it. Not if Walt had any say in the matter.

"Are you ready, Goldie?" The Patriarch stepped inside to give her shoulder a reassuring pat. "If so, just follow me, your Step-Father won't cause us any trouble."

Goldie couldn't help the smile that crossed her face as she watched the two brothers. Edmund did a good job of blocking his brother out, but the younger's confused expression was impossible to miss. She was about to answer when Edmund smoothly approached her, his fingers deftly moving across her silky smooth skin, drawing her eyes to the contact and distracting her mind from the question.

"Would the river not be cold?" She asked softly, tilting her head away from his hands on her skin and up to his eyes, her own blue ones bright and eager-- mostly to leave this place, but in part for the promised bath. She was indeed filthy, she could feel the dirt clinging to her skin even then, her hair felt heavy from the mud as well-- she'd been less than careful when she's sprinted through the forest.

Before anyone could answer, Walt was questioning them again. She tilted herself forward to see him past his elder brother's form, but couldn't get any words out before Rupert joined them. All thoughts were erased the moment she spoke. The smile on her face spread into a huge grin and an excited squeak worked it's way past her throat. "Really? I can leave?" Her voice carried some disbelief, but her eyes were begging for them to confirm it. It was her biggest dream to leave this place and never have to come back-- of course she'd miss the farm boys and the animals, but it was a small thing to give up to escape Jacob Slint's clutches.

Edmund was quick to confirm for her, and so that somewhat dazed grin turned up to him. Quickly, so she wouldn't lose her courage, she wrapped her arms around him tightly and hugged. The same thankful hug she had given Rupert earlier, she dropped it quickly though, a crimson blushing taking over her face in a matter of moments, her fingers slipping into his grip without question.

"Thank you, thank you," she was speaking to all of them, but when Edmund dragged her past his brother she turned to him directly and said it again, flashing him one of her biggest and brightest grins. "If it's too heavy I can carry it," she started to say to Walt, missing most of what Edmund said to his father. A moment later the boy was stumbling with his words and standing awkwardly at her side, she laughed warmly, patted his hand and untangled herself. "Almost. Just one last thing."

Goldie scooted past Walt, her fingers brushing his arm as she moved to the side of her bed. She lifted the mattress and pulled a small pouch and a palm-sized frame out. The frame held an old greying picture of her mother, with the same golden hair and bright eyes, while the pouch had what little money she had. "Okay. Now I'm ready."

With renewed courage she stepped past the boys and toward Rupert, giving them each another grin before nodding at the patriarch. "I've been waiting fifteen years to hear that." Her voice was quiet as she admitted it, but there was no weakness in it. Her shoulders straightened a moment later. "Let's go."

And so Goldielocks followed Papa Bear.

If looks could kill, Edmund would have dropped dead on the spot. He'd never seen such a glare, and for a moment he regretted the wink he'd shot his sibling as he returned Goldie's hug, and allowed his hand to glide down her body until his palm rested on the small of her back. Only for a moment however, and the wink soon turned into a wide grin, then a laugh, as the embrace ended, and she offered to carry the case herself. "He needs to build up his strength." Edmund poked his tongue out at Walt over Goldie's head, then his stomach suddenly dropped as she thanked them all, and released his hand. Was she going to give Walt a hug as well?" Edmund exhaled the breath he didn't know he'd been holding when she instead scooted past his sibling to collect one last item.

Walt, with Goldie's trunk balanced over one shoulder, gave her a forced smile, then pulled his eyes back to Edmund, and shook his head. The boys were having a conversation, without words; one Edmund thought he was in control of. With the weight of Goldie's trunk slowing his brother down, he could monopolise the young woman's attention without interference. "It's okay, it's not heavy." Walt spoke through gritted teeth.

Rupert's expression, as Edmund turned to face him was one of half amusement, and half warning. The Patriarch's attention then shifted to Goldie. "I'm glad we could help. I'm sure you're going to bring much joy and pleasure to our household."

Edmund's eyes lit up, and he nodded in enthusiastic agreement, though Papa hadn't intended the words in the manner in which his eldest son had taken them. His fingers gently touched Goldie's hand, and he looked down at the picture. "Is that your Momma?" The young man's jade green eyes rose to meet her bright blue orbs. His expression was one of gentleness, and the words barely above a whisper. "She's so pretty. Just like you." Then he laced his fingers in Goldie's again, and followed Papa out the door. Nary a glance was thrown over his shoulder to see if his brother had moved.

Jacob stood where Papa had left him, and his face turned pale when they exited the residence. His gaze slid to Goldie, and he opened his mouth to speak, however was stopped in his tracks as Rupert approached. The weasel's lower lip drooped, and quivered, then he turned his back, and found another outlet for his anger. "What the hell are you looking at. I told you to get back to work. Now, or I'll bring out the damn horse whip, and flay you alive". Slint stalked towards the farm-hands, who all remained with grins on their faces. None appeared too concerned about his threat. It was likely his cowardly lack of resistance to Papa earlier had lessened any fear they had of the man, and the Patriarch felt content to leave them to fend for themselves.

Edmund held Goldie's hand as they walked, with Papa in front, and Walt lagging behind. The journey this time was a much happier one, and Papa, as content as he'd been in a long while, whistled a tune, whilst Edmund chatted happily to Goldie. How Walt felt was difficult to ascertain, as he trailed a fair distance back. Edmund ensured he did his best not to give his new friend any time to worry about that.

After a good distance, they'd entered the forest, and approached a clearing. "Papa". Edmund called out, and Rupert stopped in his tracks and swivelled to face them. Through the canopy of trees came the shimmer of moonlight reflecting off water. "Goldie and I are going to stop so that she can bathe."

Papa's eyebrow raised as Edmund squeezed Goldie's hand, and shot her the most innocent smile he could muster. "Don't worry about the water, the sun has been beating down on it all day, it will be just fine." Even if he was wrong, that didn't matter. Edmund didn't plan to allow Goldie to remain cold for long.

His attention shifted back to his Papa. "You and Walt should go on ahead. You know to, um, um" - he floundered for a few moments, before the rest of the words tumbled out in a rush - "get a fire started, and ready Goldie's bed." Father and son looked at each other without speaking for what felt an eternity to the elder boy, but was in reality mere seconds. Papa Bear knew precisely what was on his son's mind. Just as Rupert finally appeared about to respond, there came the sound of huffing and panting, then the loud thump of Goldie's chest hitting the earth.

"What's going on?" Walt stood there, wide-eyed, out-of-breath, hair matted with sweat, face red from exertion, and stared at the three of them. He must have sprinted to catch up.

Goldie couldn't stop smiling, so much so, that her cheeks were burning from holding the expression. She was jolted out of her happy haze by Edmund's gentle hands. He lowered his gaze to meet hers and she was instantly lost in his eyes-- they were so vibrant and full of joy and life that it lightened her own heart. "Ah, yes." She touched the face of her mother and smiled, brightening it at his words. "Thank you, she would have loved to hear that."

The next few minutes leaving the house were thankfully rather silent. Goldie avoided meeting Jacob's eyes even as she felt them crawl across her as they ushered her out. Edmund's warm hand around hers pulling her out of his sight. Walt blocking his view with her trunk over his shoulder. The four of them walked off the property in relative silence, Edmund warm and comforting beside her, while Rupert's broad form led the way. Walt was falling behind them, but by the time he was far enough back to notice, Edmund was distracting the young woman with exaggerating stories and jokes, making her laugh and share a few (albeit gentler) tales of her own.

They had only really begun the journey when Edmund called for his father. He was so calm and in control, she reflected as he spoke with Rupert. His hand tightening briefly around her own. She smiled between the two and then offered Rupert another extra bright grin. "If it's not too much trouble, of course. I can do that all when I get there, there is really no need to go to any extra trouble--"

Walt's timing with her chest was perfect, and she jumped a bit as she spun to face him. Suddenly her face was filled with concern and shock. Without thinking, she let go of Edmund's hand to rush to Walt. "Oh Walt," she begun, her tone gentle. She carefully brushed back some of his matted hair from his face ans frowned softly. "You're going to hurt yourself. There's no need to, on my behalf. Truly." She smiled at him again, reaching to take the handle of the trunk for herself.

"Plus," she continued, looking back to Edmund. "If we're going to be bathing, I ought to keep this with me so I can put something clean on when we're finished, yes?" Goldie grinned from Walter to Edmund, then across to Rupert. "If we're allowed to make the stop. Of course." She flushed at her assumption. "I really would love to wash away some of this filth-- last thing I want to do is track mud into your home, I've already done enough damage today I think."

"I could start dinner when we got back too, if that works for you?"

It was Walt's turn to smirk, and Edmund's to glare, when Goldie left his side, and moved to his brother. As he listened to the concern in her voice, and watched the way in which her hand moved up to gently brush back his sibling's matted hair, Edmund mentally scolded himself. How could he have been so stupid. Now Walt was all hot and sweaty, and he was going to have an excuse to bathe. He should have carried Goldie's trunk himself, and shown how strong he was. But then, he probably wouldn't have gotten the chance to talk and laugh with her as he had, or to hear her stories. Why did Walt have to come along at all?" Edmund's pupils darkened, and he shook a fist at his younger brother.

However, Walt didn't see it. He was too busy blushing, and speaking to Goldie. "It's okay, I'm not hurt. Just a little hot, but the water should cool me off. Then I can carry it the rest of the way." His expression, as he finally met Edmund's eyes, was one of pure satisfaction. He would have poked his tongue out if Goldie hadn't been able to see him.

Edmund turned to Papa, with a look of silent pleading. Rupert caught the movement, and raised an eyebrow, then his forehead creased in thought. At that moment, Edmund realised that Goldie had a asked a question of him, and he swivelled on his toes so fast that he almost fell over. He stilled swayed from side to side, as he forced a smile in her direction. "Of course. Then I can carry your trunk the rest of the way."

Edmund's attention shifted to his brother. "We wouldn't want Walt to do an injury." The implied threat contained in those words, which were accompanied with a fierce scowl, was caught by the younger boy immediately, and he glanced at his Father for protection.

Papa either hadn't noticed, or pretended not to have, and instead answered the young woman as he moved between she and Walt. "That's fine with me. You've been waiting so long, and it's safe enough out here, Edmund will look after you." Then he looked to his youngest. Walt and I will return home."

The Patriarch had made up his mind. As much as he loved his sons equally, Papa knew both their foibles. In a matter such as this, Edmund could be trusted to ensure Goldie remained safe, and to stop if she became uncomfortable. Whilst he trusted Walt too, the boy could sometimes be impulsive, and not show the same maturity as his elder sibling. And to leave the two of them alone with her? Out of the question.

Walt turned pale, and his lower lip quivered as his head jerked up, and his eyes widened in disbelief at the unfairness of it all. "But, Papa, I......I....I" He shot daggers at Edmund, whose grin had returned, and stomped his foot in anger.

"Shush, son, Don't make a fuss" Rupert's voice raised, and Walt's mouth immediately clamped shut, though his lip still trembled, and he suddenly found something of great interest in the forest floor at his feet. Aware of how disappointed his son must be, Papa lifted a large, calloused hand, and affectionately ruffled his hair. "You'll have your chance to bathe later, and if Goldie's going to cook dinner, I'll need help to collect fire-wood for the stove, then we have to make her up a bed. You do want the young lady to feel comfortable in her new home, don't you son? What Rupert failed to mention, was that Goldie was to have her own room, and the boys would be required to bunk together. That news would be sure to go down a treat.

Walt slowly lifted his gaze, attempted a smile for Goldie, then nodded, and reluctantly acquiesced. "Okay, Papa." Disappointment was etched in his voice, but he offered no further resistance. It would only create an argument that he couldn't win, and embarrass him in front of his new friend.

Rupert draped an arm over Walt's shoulder, gave him a Fatherly squeeze, and turned to Goldie. "Enjoy your bath, and we'll see you when you arrive home. We'll fix the makings for supper."

He then locked eyes with Edmund, and the two stared at each other for a few moments before Papa broke the silence "Don't take too long, and you make sure to keep Goldie safe. Do you hear me?"

Edmund's expression turned momentarily sombre, and he inclined his head. "Yes, Papa. I promise."

"Bye Goldie." Walt spoke softly as Papa, satisfied that Goldie would be safe, bid both her and Edmund farewell, then walked into the forest with one arm still draped over Walt's shoulder.

As soon as they'd disappeared behind some trees, Edmund approached Goldie. The elder boy beamed, almost as bright as the moon. "Come on, let's bathe." As he spoke, his fingers hooked into his vest, and he slipped it up over his head. A broad, massive chest with a light trail of dark hair which led to his navel and accentuated a slim, toned stomach - kept that way by arduous work performed in the fields - was revealed when he reached her, and Edmund dropped the garment to the ground. Small beads of sweat glimmered on his sun-bronzed skin.

"Don't be shy." Edmund spoke in a whisper as he moved even closer, so that their bodies almost touched, and he met her eyes with his. "It's just us." One hand reached for Goldie's, and gently, he began to lead her towards the water.
