Cedric sighed from where he stood behind a long, oaken table, looking at the little figures placed around the map. The dragons that represented his men were losing to the wolves that represented the armies he was up against. The king grumbled angrily and tossed a few of the little wooden figures off of the map, running a hand over his withered face. In his youth, he'd been a strong, handsome man. Tall, broad-shouldered and powerful. In a lot of ways, he still was. But he wasn't going any more. Going on fifty years old, now, the he had some grey in his otherwise brown hair, speckled across the thick but trimmed beard that clung to his strong jaw.

Earlier that day, a sorceress had arrived at his court. Beautiful and young, with hair long and as dark as night. But Cedric was skeptical of magic users. They were crafty, and not quick to be trusted. She'd said she could help him, use her magic to turn the tide of the war his kingdom was losing. The king hadn't been quick to accept her offer. After all, she surely wasn't going to help him for free. But as he looked over the map, looked at what few men he had left in his armies... well, he had very little choice left.

There was a knocking on the heavy door that led in to his study, and the king lifted his head. As usual, there were guards posted outside, even this late in to the night. Cedric frowned and paused for a moment before calling out to them. "Open," he said, and the door swung wide to show the same sorceress who had been at his court just a few hours before. Cedric's eyes narrowed as he looked at her. She was very beautiful, but that also made her very dangerous. He sighed through his nose and looked at the guards before nodding his head. "Leave us."

The door was closed, leaving just the two of them inside. The king leaned forwards some and rested his hands against the table, looking down at the map again. "Why have you come?" he asked, voice low and gruff. "Be quick. My time is precious. Do not waste it."
